Night of the Soulless Heathens – 88

#88. Black Arrow 1
Ismail did not like Azadin from start to finish.
The boys and girls of the Herald Clan are forced into fierce competition from childhood. Especially those without any family background or possessions if they fail to prove their abilities during the Herald selection process they will live their entire lives as losers.
However the one who was eliminated in the selection process and was destined to be a loser for the rest of his life became the messenger. Even though the elder was the guardian everyone was dissatisfied with the unconventional appointment and the person in question was actually seeking the honor of being the emperor’s messenger.
Those people of Hybris are asserting that Aragasa has no soul so what honor is there in protecting such people?
All of the Aragasa people will reject it. Why would Azadin a heretic who failed the herald selection test and cannot use a single spell have the authority to decide that?
‘Well I can’t deny his skills but…’
When I think back to the time when Azadin defeated Count Salasma I cannot help but acknowledge his skills. Nevertheless Ismail felt a sense of disgust whenever he saw Azadin as if bugs were crawling on his skin.
“Azadin is right. We are the Emperor’s messengers and our original mission was a very honorable one. We have forgotten it because of the persecution.”
What annoys Ismail even more is that Medium has been protecting Azadin for some time now. She seems to have an undeniable sense of favor in defending Azadin’s words and actions. That is what he particularly dislikes.
Why did Azadin whom she met briefly attract her heart more than he who was always by her side holding her hand? Azadin didn’t even have eyes!
“Why should I be obsessed with fame that no one knows about? Huh?”
As Ismail was muttering the feeling of foresight suddenly disappeared.
“uh?!”
Something attacked the foresight and took it out. But how?
The magic of the Seonkyo is a magic that sends an artificial spirit Seonkyo into the sky and shares its senses to scout. This artificial spirit is a wind spirit that is so transparent that it is almost invisible from the ground.
But the fact that he discovered it and attacked it… meant that he was no ordinary guy.
“Oh no! Everyone wake up!”
Medium woke up the exhausted women.
“What’s going on?”
Delmer asked.
“The enemy is coming!”
“Oh no.”
Naga the female Shati frowned at the ominous aura she felt behind her.
“Everyone move along the stream!”
Brand shouted at the people like that.

“But then the other person would know too…”
Except for the stream the bushes are growing thickly so there is no choice but to move around at night without lighting a light. But isn’t that the same for the opponent?
“Those who can fight let us stay here and block the enemy’s feet!”
Brand said so and waved the crowbar in the air.
‘This old man is out of his mind. Oh he really is crazy.’
Ismail really didn’t like all this.
*********
It took a long time for the fugitive slaves to get ready to run away just to get their place back and pack up their things. Just as they were barely able to pick up their things an arrow came flying out of the bushes. The arrow struck the crowbar in Brand’s hand and slid down splitting the brass washbasin.
“Ugh!”
Sir Brand staggered back blood streaming from his forehead. The arrows were as powerful as the bows of the Heralds. They were fired from Ashwood’s longbow.
‘But the one who used that bow had his finger cut off by Azadin? Were there any other archers?’
Ismail bowed down in embarrassment.
“Whoa!”
The women were surprised to see Sir Brand bleeding and instead stood up. He was a good target for the enemy who was shooting arrows.
‘it’s annoying!’
Ismail became angry when he saw that sight.
‘You weak and pathetic things. You should have run away quickly. Why are you screaming because you’ve seen some blood? If it’s Aragasa even a twelve-year-old boy would have bled that much… Even if you get stabbed in the stomach you’ll run away first and then sew up your stomach with a fishhook!’
When Ismail looked at them indignantly Medium shook him.
“Ismail don’t get excited and go to the bushes!”
“Oh yes!”
Ismail was ashamed of his excitement. He seemed to have become excited because he hated the weak. Wasn’t he no different from those weak people he hated? But why did he hate them so much that he couldn’t stand it?
As Lord Brandt fell and the runaway slaves began to commotion bandits emerged from the bushes.
“You dare set fire to our den?”
“I’ve treated you like gold and jade all this time but you still can’t come to your senses?”
The bandits smiled slyly like a pack of lynxes in the forest. Even in the darkness their eyes sparkled with violence and greed.
“Donner… How much more evil must I do before I am satisfied!”
“Hey Sir Brand. I thought you were always joking. I didn’t know you were serious. It seems we haven’t recognized the true knight.”
Donair the leader of the bandits came out from under the shadows of the forest laughing merrily. Under the dim starlight his face looked like a gilded bronze mask.
“So you dare to run away? Where are you going? To Lantarik? What are you going to do there?”
Donair was complaining.
“As you know Lord Brand I came here on the orders of Count Lantaric. Everything I did was under Count Lantaric’s orders. Do you think you will survive if you escape to the Lantaric County?”
“Hic!?”
The runaway slaves were terrified when they heard that.
Is Count Lantaric behind these bandits? If that’s true then even if I flee to the Lantaric County I won’t find any salvation anywhere.
“Only I can save you. I will sell you into slavery. You will become a slave to some rich man but if you do well you can become a second wife. That may not be a good life but wasn’t your life miserable before that?”
Even Donner who said that had a bitter smile on his face.
“Everyone in this Whibris is miserable unless they are nobles. How much worse are you monsters who ate the flesh of your own family? Cannibalism is a grave crime. If the knights find out you will be burned alive.”

The runaway slaves trembled at Donair’s meanness. He had forced people to kill and feed them to their families and now he was threatening them with it!
“Cannibal?”
But when Brand heard those words he was horrified. It seemed as if the horrible images he had tried so hard to erase from his mind were beginning to come back to him.
“ah….”
The crowbar fell from Brand’s hand.
“So now you remember. Every one of you here is guilty of cannibalism. And of your own family. You are no exception Sir Brand. You are truly a remarkable knight.”
“Ahh… That’s a lie! I….”
“Hehehe. This is unbearable. I kept it alive because it was fun to watch.”
Donair burst into laughter as he watched Brand shudder. At that moment an arrow pierced through the bushes and flew towards Donair’s head.
*********
The arrows were fired simultaneously by Midiam and Ismail who were hiding among the bushes.
“this….”
Donair raised his sword and struck down one arrow and dodged another. It was no ordinary swordsmanship to deal with two flying arrows in one motion. Indeed it was a skill worthy of being the leader of the agents planted by Count Lantaric.
But Donair groaned as he struck out the arrow.
“Ugh!”
Before he knew it another arrow was stuck in his head.
The art of the messenger clan Lee Seon-gung.
One arrow was hidden in the shadow of another arrow. It was a technique that was difficult to block even in broad daylight but it was fired in the dark of the night so it was understandable that they would be hit without knowing what was going on.
-Thud!
When Donair fell the bandits were terrified.
“Huh?! The two bosses?”
“This can’t be happening!”
Once again arrows began to fly from the bushes.
-Pop!
The thieves were mercilessly shot by arrows. But…
“uh?”
“It doesn’t hurt that much?”
“Hey wait a minute! This thing got stuck in my head!”
The bandits were terrified when they saw the arrows stuck in their bodies. But strangely enough it didn’t hurt. In addition worm-like insects emerged from the wounds and filled the wounds causing only a little blood to flow out.
“These idiots.”
An unbearable donor arose.
“If you guys do that then my acting will be for nothing. Are you so clueless?”
He pulled out the arrow that was stuck in his head. He could see worm-like insects wriggling around in the wound filling the hole.
A monster that gets up fine despite having an arrow stuck in its skull and whose wounds are filled with bugs!
“boss!”
“You guys are stupid and failed to drag out the rascals. Those guys must be the kids that the messenger clan brought around.”
Donair remembered the situation when he met Azadin. It was definitely their skill the young-looking boy and girl that the messenger Azadin was leading around.
“What should I do?”
“You you.”
“yes?!”
“Go into the bushes and look for them. There are two little ones.”
“Oh yes!”
“All right.”
The thieves heard Donair’s words and ran into the bushes.
“Ugh… Vile!”
Brand came to his senses and sat up but Donair walked towards him with his sword and struck Brand with the hilt.
“Hahahaha! What a great knight you have! The Brass Knight!”
Brand rolled on the floor. As Donaire raised his foot to kick the fallen Brand Delmer jumped out from behind and stabbed him with his sword. However Donaire easily blocked that attack as well and grabbed Delmer by the neck.
“Ugh!”
“Hey Delmer. It’s not time for you to step out yet. No matter how bored you are you should have just stayed put.”
“Hey you little punk! Donner!”
Delmer resisted but Donaire picked her up with one hand. It was a strength that was inhuman.
At that moment Donaire noticed a bag he had never seen before at Delmer’s side.
“Huh? What’s this bag? Is it Naga’s woman’s bag?”
Donair opened the bag. A dazzling light was emanating from inside the bag.
“Hmm. Is this what the knight was looking for? A paper that glows on its own.”
Donair took out the glowing papers from his bag and looked at them with wonder.
“Could this be?”
“Yes it’s a copy of the New King’s Book!”
Among the runaway slaves a Naga woman named Shati revealed her body.
“A copy of the New King’s Book?”
Of course Donairo also knew what the Shinwangjinseo was.
The King’s Grimoire.
The source of power for the Yaegasu gods.
Is this it? I can definitely believe it when I see paper that glows on its own.
“If you offer it to the Cobra Queen she will grant you her grace. Otherwise you will die.”
When Shati said that the thieves became enraged.
“What? Are you threatening us now?”
“I’m not saying I’ll kill you. Do you think that article will let you live?”
The thieves were furious but Donair stopped them.
“Okay go ahead girl. This is fun. What are you going to say? Go ahead and say it. I’ll listen if you tell me a funny story.”
Donair was curious to hear what Shati had to say. But…
“Yes I would like to hear that too.”
A new figure appeared in the bushes.
