#75. Temple of the Serpent 6

“Wow that’s amazing. What did I just see?!”

Medium was astonished at what was unfolding before his eyes. A monster as big as a house and a Naga a race that once ruled over humanity was defeated by Azadin who could not even use magic even though he was the Emperor’s messenger.

    “Maybe he…..”

Ismail who had been maintaining his foresight magic could see what Azadin was doing from the top of the bell tower. Azadin had hooked the bell ringer’s rope to the lower rafters the part that supported the weight of the bell tower’s waist and pulled it out.

Azadin who had thus caused the bell tower to collapse on his own ran inside the collapsing bell tower and reached the rooftop. Then while pulling the broken sharpened rafters with a rope he threw himself at the Count hitting him in the head and impaling him with the sharpened rafters.

The count who suffered a great shock when a rafter pierced his head was unable to avoid it in time and was crushed by the collapsing bell tower.

    “….”

“This isn’t right. We should go rescue them!”

Midiam ran towards the collapsed bell tower where Azadin and the Count were entangled.

    *********

    “Ugh!”

The Count vomited blood from his mouth. The life force was draining from his body. The power he had received from the Kurt clan was also draining from his body.

    “Ugh… what is this!”

    “Gasp… gasp….”

Azadin got up. He leaped down from the bell tower and rushed at the Count then pursed his lips and vomited out a handful of blood.

    “My victory Count Kasel.”

Count Kasel was dying. His body was slowly shrinking and returning to human form. However the wounds he had already received would still remain even after his body returned to human form and would lead to his death.

“You won messenger. That’s amazing. I never thought you could defeat the Kurt clan like this.”

    “…Why did you do that?”

Azadin asked the Count that. It was a strange question.

“Why? Because of ambition as I said. But…..”

“Usually corrupt nobles are obsessed with lust and luxury. They don’t reach out to the Kurts because of their greed. Why would they do that?”

Azadin felt something strange about the Count’s actions. No one blindly desires power. Even if she were someone like Arael who wanted to become a tyrant there was a background behind her that she was a traitorous child of the Herald Clan and was someone who would be eaten if she did not show her strength.

Then why did the count a descendant of the Yaegasu clan collude with the Nagas?

    “…Because I was desperate.”

    “despair?”

“Yes. This world is empty and will soon be destroyed. The age of Jupiter may be coming as the doomsday preachers shout in the marketplace say… The blood of the Yaegas is gradually fading away and the light of the royal flower is fading.”

    “….”

“But even if I say something it’s just a lame excuse. Hehehe.”

“A copy of the New King’s Book?”

“What I had… I gave to my lovers. Their apostles are probably taking it to the Nagas’ den by now.”

    “….”

    “Ugh…..”

The Count’s breathing became ragged. His body gradually shrank and the arrows and giant rafters that Azadin had thrust into him created huge openings in his body.

The Count was unable to speak and died as a result of the wound that opened his head and allowed his brain fluid to flow out.

Azadin dragged his badly injured body to the ruins of the collapsed bell tower and took the signet ring from the fallen Count’s body.

This signet ring a symbol of the lord’s authority serves as a seal for stamping official orders and will serve as proof that Azadin killed the count.

‘Assassination requests are meaningless now… but this will be necessary.’

Azadin took the count’s signet ring and turned around.

At the entrance to the Count’s palace soldiers and knights who had fled in fear were fighting against the uncontrolled released mummified soldiers. Ismail and Midiam approached Azadin.

“Let’s take refuge in this gap.”

“You wouldn’t be asking me to save them would you?”

“No way. Medium Ismail. Thank you.”

    “yes?”

“Oh what is it? It is a servant’s duty to assist the messenger.”

“No you went above and beyond your duty. Thank you.”

Azadin thanked them both sincerely and headed towards the collapsed sponsorship wing with them.

“Uh… Are you going to escape here?”

“We need to go down to the subway and finish investigating.”

“What if there are mummies left?”

“It’ll be okay since it got crushed when it collapsed. But… ugh.”

Azadin groaned. His body was covered in wounds.

    “Okay. Let’s go down carefully.”

    “yes!”

Azadin and Midiam prepared a rope tied it tightly and went down into the basement.

    *********

Coming back down to the underpass rocks fell from above just as Azadin had said crushing many of the mummy soldiers.

    “Ismail this wand…..”

    “Oh yes!”

Ismail took hold of the Bone Wand and casted a spell. Sure enough it revealed that there was a copy of the Book of the New King very close by. When Azadin went to see it he saw a Naga woman lying dead on a rock.

“Is this a copy of the New King’s Book?”

As Azadin held out the bracelet he had received from Aldis two copies of the Book of the New King flowed into his hands.

    “What about the other three?”

    “Over there.”

Ismail pointed to the closed iron door with the wand still holding the magical light. When Medium approached he saw that the iron door lock was unlocked. He then noticed blood on the doorknob.

“One escaped alive. Is this a big deal?”

Azadin walked to open the iron gate but after a while he began to limp.

    “Ugh…..”

As the excitement of battle wore off and the adrenaline wore off my body began to demand payment for all the hard work.

    “Augh.”

Azadin fell to his knees before he could even catch up.

    “Shall we pursue you?”

    “Please you two go together.”

Azadin asked Ismail and Midiam to pursue the Naga who had run away with the New King’s Book. Then he lay down on the ground.

    “Ugh.”

Azadin lost consciousness and passed out.

    *********

Medium and Ismail walked along the underpass looking around but even though they finally reached the refugee camp teeming with refugees along the dried-up river they could not find Naga.

The Naga drinker has already turned into a human and escaped from this place.

“You can’t use a wand in public.”

Ismail hid the bone wand. If anyone were to use such a magical item in public which was obviously menacing they would immediately be caught by the priests or knights of the King’s Church.

“Is this it? If I were to ask people….”

Since Midiam and Ismail are young children wandering around the refugee camp at night is a waste of time. And Azadin is a concern.

    “Let’s go back.”

“Can you just give up like this? I took a copy of the Shinwangjinseo and I’m injured. The other person is….”

Ismail couldn’t stop his obsession with the copy of the Shinwangjinseo. No matter what he was also a member of the Jeonryung clan. The copy of the Shinwangjinseo was the key to freeing the clan from the curse of service the wish of all the clans.

I can’t believe I missed my chance to get it.

“Well it would be better to keep Azadin safe. Let’s go back quickly and protect Azadin.”

Midiam unlike any other messenger neatly gave up the copy of the New King’s Book and returned to Azadin. Since Midiam took the first step Ismail had no choice but to follow.

    *********

The undead soldiers and mummy soldiers that the Count had been creating were losing control and running wild fighting the knights who were guarding the Count’s palace.

Since they were mummies that roamed around spreading an aura of curse the casualties for ordinary soldiers and knights were high. In addition the count had disappeared making it difficult to know who had the authority to command.

At that moment a knight came riding a horse from the South Gate.

“I am the Knight of the King’s Church Zibek!”

As he spoke Lord Jibek cast a spell from his horse. A dazzling halo flashed above his head then began to spread out in all directions repelling the aura of curse from the undead.

    “oh!?”

    “Sir Ji Jibek!”

    “It’s a knight!”

    “and!”

The soldiers cheered as Lord Jibek joined in. Lord Jibek ran and cut down the mummy soldiers breaking the deadlock among the soldiers and rescuing them.

    “Thank you.”

“So what’s going on? According to rumors….”

“Yes! A giant snake! Suddenly from the sponsorship annex….”

    “Sponsorship Annex?”

“Yes. That’s where the Count was.”

“These monsters also came from there!”

“Then what about that giant snake?”

“They say he was crushed by that collapsed bell tower!”

    “Oh really?”

Sir Jibek clicked his tongue when he heard that. How could monsters suddenly pour out of the Count’s residence? There were also rumors of mysterious witches entering the Count’s palace so it seemed that this was the Count’s doing.

‘Then I will have to take over the command from the Count. Can I do that?’

The knights and officers appointed by the Count could be part of the same gang. Sir Zibek hesitated thinking so but the soldiers and knights asked Sir Zibek instead.

    “Sir Ji Jibek!”

    “Please lead!”

“Okay! Then I’ll help you even if it’s not enough!”

Sir Zibek led his soldiers and knights and first killed the monsters that had gone to the servants’ quarters. Then he ordered the rescued servants to barricade furniture and luggage to prevent the monsters from going out into the streets. After that Sir Zibek went to the collapsed bell tower…

    “hmm.”

The body of the count was found crushed to death in the bell tower.

    “This is…..”

“First of all refrain from making any rash moves. We’ll collect the bodies after we’ve confirmed how many monsters are left!”

Sir Jebeck ordered his panicked soldiers to keep their mouths shut selected some of his trusted knights to guard the Count’s body and set about eliminating the remaining monsters.

As the sun rose most of the demons lost their strength and fell before the light of the King’s Flower and the sun.

    *********

    “So what you’re saying is…”

Bishop William of Salasma clicked his tongue as he heard Sir Zibek’s report.

“The Count was the one who went out?”

“Compared to people’s testimonies yes. It’s not that I was originally out there but perhaps I met those witches and….”

“So are you saying that the bishop who governed the Count’s affairs at his side was incompetent and had googly eyes?”

    “Oh no. That’s not what I meant…”

Sir Jibek quickly lowered his body.

Sir Zibek who had fought the mummy soldiers all night long to rescue soldiers and servants was like a sponge soaked in fatigue but he still maintained a restrained behavior in front of the bishop. However the bishop only looked down at Sir Zibek as if he was disgusted.

    ‘It’s true right? But?’

The clergy and knights who kept their mouths shut around the bishop believed that what the bishop said was right.

‘It is true that the bishop is incompetent and has googly eyes.’

‘Even a bishop knows how to grasp reality sometimes.’

Everyone thought so but they couldn’t bring themselves to say it out loud. They just felt sorry for Lord Jibek.
