#73. Temple of the Serpent 4

From the Count’s perspective the Naga sorcerers are his lovers and it is a disaster that they are under attack. As he cannot stand it anymore and approaches Azadin the arrows that Midiam had just shot fall from his body.

    “Thank you!”

Azadin picked up the arrow from the ground.

    “Shaaaaah!”

    “Kyaak!”

The mummy soldiers emerge from their bodies to block the sorcerers protecting them from Azadin’s arrows. However Azadin dashes toward a nearby mummy kicks his shoulder leaps up and fires another arrow in midair.

    “Kyaa…..”

The sorcerer’s condition is not good.

    “this guy!”

As the enraged Count unable to hold back charged forward with his weapon Azadin dodged between the mummy soldiers. The Count swung his weapon not caring whether they caught him or not.

    -Throw!

The mummy soldiers are torn apart and blown away. However Azadin has already fled to the other side. The excited Count moves but the large Naga moves in the culvert so the mummy soldiers continue to get caught.

“You’re destroying the mummy soldiers I made with great effort!”

    “How dare you!”

The Count charged in anger but Azadin used his mummy soldiers to dodge his charge and dodged around.

The Count tried to corner Azadin but Azadin dodged and shouted at Midiam.

“Medium! How much rope can you lower?”

    “yes!”

    “Okay let’s go!”

Azadin tucked his bow and ran towards the statue. The enraged count tried to swing his sword but was stopped by the statue. If he continued to attack like this he would end up destroying the statue.

    “also!”

Azadin stepped on the statue and leaped forward.

    -Boohoo!

At that moment the bronze torch the Count was holding flew into the air. The Count threw the torch in his hand at the moment when Azadin jumped. However Azadin pretended to jump with all his might and ducked down to avoid the torch.

“I knew you’d attack on your first leap!”

Azadin jumped up lifting the Count up and grabbed the rope that Midiam was lowering.

    “Eww! Are you okay?”

    “Can you lift the rope?”

“Ismail from above… but it’s hard!”

Ismail is holding onto the well pulley with a grunt but it is moving too slowly.

“Hey! Ismail! Just secure the rope!”

    “yes?!”

Medium was surprised to hear that. Then the Count cast a spell to capture Azadin. Blood turned into a spear and flew towards Azadin.

    “Ugh!”

Azadin avoided the attack by grabbing the rope in midair and swinging his body like a large pendulum.

    “No way!”

    -grasp!

A spear of blood hit Azadin!

    “Ah! Azadin!”

Medium who was holding the rope slightly higher than Azadin was shocked… but Azadin was holding the rope intact and holding something in his right hand.

“This is very sturdy. I like it!”

It was the head of a halberd. The captain of the guard at the post station in the easternmost part of the country held the head of the halberd like a tonfa and used it to block the flying bloody spears.

    “this guy!”

The Count leaped forward swinging his greatsword in anger. At that moment Azadin used his pendulum to approach the wall and began to run up the wall while holding onto the rope.

I avoided the Count’s charge attack by running up the wall in a spiral.

    “Ugh!”

As the Count’s attack missed his huge body ended up stuck between the statue and the wall.

    -Crack!

The statue was shattered by the Count’s body.

“As expected you are a descendant of the Yaegasu Gods. Even if you become a Naga you will never bow down to the Kurt Gods! How amazing! You even destroyed the statue of the Cobra Queen!”

Azadin ran up the rope grumbling and finally escaped to the bloodbath.

    *********

    “Ugh!”

Medium climbed up the rope in a hurry and sighed.

“Huk huk… Are you okay Azadin?”

“Yeah. Thanks. Thank you. If you hadn’t come I would have been in big trouble.”

“I think something big has already happened.”

Ismail pointed to the count who was starting to climb up from below.

    “Let’s run away!”

    “Yeah yeah!”

As the Count began to forcibly scale the wall dragging the giant cracks began to appear in the floor of the blood bath.

Azadin and Midiam went back the way they had come passing the dissecting room for making mummies and arriving at the first floor of the sponsorship annex. There corpses with blades attached to their hands and feet were moving like puppets on strings blocking Azadin and his party.

    “What is this?”

Undead marionettes created with the idea of using corpse muscles as a power source to move the blades on their hands and feet threaten Azadin’s group.

    “What is this?”

“It wasn’t there when we came in… The Count’s palace is a paradise for monsters.”

The Medium felt uneasy that their escape route was blocked by an enemy that had not been there when they entered. There was a sorcerer controlling the corpses in the darkness.

He began to manipulate the magic power of the corpse marionettes from a place where Azadin and his party could not see. The marionettes approached spinning as if dancing and their momentum was fierce. However Azadin responded calmly.

“Do you have any arrows left?”

    “here.”

Ismail took out an arrow from his quiver and gave it to Azadin because Azadin had told Midiam and Ismail to bring him a bunch of arrows and they had kept their word.

In addition to the tradition he also brought a bundle of arrows in his backpack so he had plenty of them. Azadin took the arrows and guided by his eyesight shot at the black magician.

    -Wedge!

An arrow flew through the light obstacles made of planks and struck the magician who was moving the marionette.

“Ugh! How did I! You completely erased my presence?”

The opponent screams and transforms from human to Naga but…

    -Shhhhh!

Azadin fired another arrow completely blowing off the head of the transforming Naga. With the caster dead the marionettes made from his corpse fell to the ground.

“The Naga are strong. They had to stick this many arrows in. Then maybe the Naga sorcerers didn’t die?”

Azadin wondered if he should go back and kill those sorcerers right now. But that would be extremely dangerous.

Even if Azadin’s return was for the sake of saving the lives of the refugees it would be disrespectful to Midiam and Ismail who came to his rescue.

‘I can’t just carelessly treat the lives saved thanks to these children.’

It would be best to retreat here since they are not the only Nagas who have learned the magic to awaken the mummy soldiers.

    “let’s go!”

“Oh it seems like you’re really grateful to me just now. Well I can’t help it. You’ve fallen for me like my classmate.”

    “…What are you saying?”

Azadin left the sponsorship annex with the nonsensical Medium.

    *********

As Azadin comes out the mummy soldiers wandering outside spot them and approach them. And…

    -Kurururung!

The roof of the sponsorship annex collapsed revealing Count Naga whose upper body was the size of an ogre.

    “Messenger Clan!”

The indignant count charged at Azadin swinging his greatsword. Azadin jumped over the fountain in the garden to avoid the count’s attack but…

    -Crack!

The fountain made of terracotta tiles was so weak that it shattered under the Count’s sword.

    -Shh!

Azadin rolled and fired an arrow but the Count deployed his magic shield again and blasted the arrow.

“It’s no use! You’re interfering with my ambitions!”

    “Then it’s not useless.”

    “what?”

“It’s not useless when your ambitions are hindered.”

“No what I mean is your arrow attacks… Ah stop it! I’ll tear you into a thousand pieces ten thousand pieces and kill you!”

The indignant count rushes in again. Azadin raises his left hand and shouts at Ismail and Midiam.

    “Aim for the right eye!”

He then throws a few arrows into the sky and prepares to fire rapidly.

Midiam and Ismail realizing Azadin’s intentions took out their arrows and started shooting at the Count’s left eye. When they gave a specific sign and signaled they aimed at the opposite target from what they were saying. This was a hand signal among the messenger clan and they were trained from childhood.

Azadin and Midiam Ismail had not yet discussed such a sign but they improvised and aimed for the Count’s left eye. Azadin also fired rapidly at the left eye.

    “this….”

Even in the dark of night the eyes of a giant Naga as big as an ogre are targets the size of a soybean when considering the distance. However the arrows of Midiam and Ismail flew with great accuracy and Azadin’s rapid fire was also extremely precise.

But when the Count opened his mouth venom spurted from his fangs pouring out like a fountain and pushing back the arrows.

    “ah!”

    “Get out of here!”

Azadin retreated again avoiding the poisons.

The mummy soldiers swarmed but Azadin caught them snatched their swords away and hurled their torsos into the Count’s venomous spurt.

    “Ouch! Shit!”

Black magic seeps into Azadin’s hands. Just by making contact with the mummy a curse of weakening seeps into your body.

Fortunately however the Count’s poison was able to be completely avoided and blocked. In addition Azadin was also able to obtain a savage iron sword although it was almost like an axe.

    “Kurrrrrr!”

The Count clicked his tongue as he blocked the arrows with his venom spray. Midiam and Ismail’s arrows were completely deflected by his venom spray but Azadin’s arrow flew without losing its power and hit him around the eye.

Because the arrow was shot precisely it hit the area around the eye and pierced the scales even though it was distorted by the venom spray. Since the arrow soaked in venom hit the area around the eye and got stuck in the body the venom entered the body.

Snakes are not immune to their own venom. Most creatures that use serum poison would be damaged if their own venom penetrated their blood vessels. Of course the Count’s body is so large that it would be impossible for him to die from just the venom from an arrow…

His eyes were getting blurry. The poison was spreading through the blood vessels around the eye that had been hit by the poison arrow lowering the function of the eye. If the poison spreads completely he would definitely lose his left eye.

“Damn! What a clever guy! What a talent!”

The Count honestly admired Azadin. Seeing him sneaking all the way here and fighting he must have lost a lot of stamina but he dodges his attacks every time and effectively harasses him with annoying if not powerful attacks.

Is this guy really going to risk his life to protect the refugees giving up the chance to run away?

‘How funny. This soulless blasphemous king-slayer is the epitome of chivalry!’

A messenger willing to risk his life for the safety of helpless people even if they are not his own people!

The other messengers the Count had defeated Harad and Kebna were not like that. In other words the Count was now having his ambitions hindered by the unfortunate encounter with a faithful messenger rare even among the messenger clans.
