#70. Temple of the Serpent 1

They now faced the reality that Azadin was a formidable foe who could never be ignored.

“I thought I had already lost it since I became a monster.”

“We still have some pride left.”

They started drinking the blood from the bath.

    “Don’t call me a coward.”

“Messenger Azadin make sure you have all the means at your disposal!”

The wounds began to heal and their mouths began to protrude.

    -Shh

    -Shhh!

The messenger begins to glide smoothly across the surface of the water his tongue flickering like a viper. Before he knows it his two legs have fused together into a single tail which glides smoothly across the surface of the water like a water snake gliding across the surface.

    “Be prepared!”

“Okay that’s right! Go for it with all your might!”

Azadin spread out his left hand placed it on the water then turned it into a fist and sent it towards the snakes.

-‘The lightning strikes the calm waters of the sky the flowers birds and moon!’

A shock wave raced across the surface of the water sending up a plume of water and sending shockwaves crashing down on the messengers as they glided across the surface.

Kazas’s Wall Lightning is a technique that subdues the opponent with a piercing beam of light. Azadin changed this by hanging it on the water surface and changing the medium into a shock wave.

In the shockwave that was physically visible the imperfect magical power of the Flower Bird and Moon within Azadin’s body turned into a dark force and struck the previous messengers.

    “Ugh!”

    “Keeek?!”

As the former messengers flinched screaming strangely a sword suddenly pierced Harad’s chest. Azadin who had been hiding between the water pillars ran towards them and stabbed the former messenger in the chest with his sword.

    -Knock knock knock.

The sword rises upward. He lifts the sword stuck in his back and cuts through his spine and rib cage. Azadin slices Harad apart with the sword just like cutting a fish along its spine. Surprised Harad tries to block the sword with his hand but his fingers are cut off.

    “Oh what a… force!”

The messenger Harad also possessed powers beyond those of ordinary humans but Azadin’s power was even greater.

    “shit!”

Kebna circled around Azadin to aid Harad waiting for an opening in his attack. However Azadin kept Harad impaled on his sword spinning him around to use him as a shield while continuing to raise his blade slicing him alive.

Eventually the blade came out of his shoulder and severed his lung….

    “Ugh!”

Even the regenerative power that came from drinking blood could not hold out. Harad collapsed with blood pouring out of his mouth.

“This freaking monster. What is this?”

“The flowers birds wind and moon are like Kajas.”

    “What is this?”

“Do you have any will or words to leave for your bereaved family? I will make sure to pass them on.”

Azadin trampled the blood-soaked former messenger Harad under his feet and looked at the other one Kevna who was still alive.

“…Ha. What can I say when I look like this? Damn it. What happened to the guy who was supposed to be the biggest idiot in the clan?”

Even though Kevna was saying that there was a look of admiration in his eyes.

    Because Azadin is strong?

But that’s not all. He was deeply moved by Azadin’s ability to talk about honor and pride to those who had fallen to the demon race.

Even now their hearts are shaken by the throbbing of a terrible and evil magic their thirst for blood but even so Azadin inspires in them the pride of a herald.

‘I never felt that kind of pride when I was a messenger.’

    Kevna glared at Azadin.

‘Boys grow up quickly. This guy is amazing. Is it Elder Kazas’s ability? Or… is it that those born with the curse of service become the best messengers?’

    Then Azadin asked a question.

“Who’s behind the Count? Is Nagashura there?”

Nagashura. It is the empire of the Nagas that ruled over humanity before the Eight Kingdoms of the Eight Kingdoms of the Eight Kingdoms came to this land.

Seeing that the previous messengers had changed into the form of Naga Azadin knew that it was Nagashura’s Nagas who had possessed the Count but he asked to confirm.

    “You figure it out yourself.”

Kevna said so and cast the spell.

    -A series!

Transparent magic bullets float up next to Kebna. Along with them Kebna rushes forward in the form of a fallen Naga spewing venom from her mouth.

But Azadin slashed the surface with his sword creating a spray of water that blocked the venom spewing from the fangs and the magic bullets from the series.

    “no!”

Azadin advanced and swung his sword.

    -Snap!

Kebna also took up her sword and confronted Azadin. However Azadin’s sword easily cut through Kebna’s sword with its terrifying power and cut off her heart and brain in a cross shape.

    “Ugh… Wow that’s great.”

Kevna collapses into the blood. Her wounds are regenerating from drinking blood but more blood is flowing out of her wounds than is regenerative.

In the end Kebna also gasped and died in pain unable to breathe right away due to her regenerative powers.

“It would have been more difficult if we had fought using the messenger’s abilities rather than the demon’s.”

“Not as a monster but as a messenger? Haha. I didn’t think of that.”

“Do you really have nothing to say?”

“The Count… intends to create an army of undead. A considerable number are already stored up below… and the copies of the Book of the New King will be offered as sacrifices to the Queen of the Nagas Devislin without any interpretation.”

    “Have you already given it?”

“I haven’t… offered it yet. The Count has five… Hah! Azadin you are a great messenger but our clan is not one that deserves your loyalty. There is darkness within our clan.”

    “which?”

“That… we don’t know much about it but it’s related to Chief Hatir. Be careful of the chief.”

    “i get it.”

Azadin raised his sword above the bodies of his predecessors to plunge it into their heads.

    “Thank you Azadin.”

Azadin freed the messengers from their suffering as they offered their thanks. Their corpses which had been transformed into the form of nagas were reverting back to human form.

“Damn it. So where did the Count go… huh?”

The water level in the blood bath was going down. Blood was seeping into the bottom of the bath.

    *********

Beneath the bath where blood flowed there was a fairly deep tunnel. Judging by its depth it was the same tunnel that the apostles of Mejeri had invaded at the bottom of the well of the Baroness Nort’s mansion. It seemed to be beyond the iron gate that had blocked Azadin’s entry.

‘Well it’s probably already been found out…’

Azadin carefully crawled into the hole under the bathtub making no sound and looked into the blood flowing down.

A huge hall was formed underground. In the wide hall there was a statue of a heretic god that exuded an indescribable aura of blasphemy and around it were at least a hundred embalmed undead mummified soldiers undead 10-leaders to command them and two nagas and Count Kazel to control them.

Azadin groaned at the sight. There were far more of them than he had expected. Moreover they were all well-armed and ready to go.

The embalmed corpses the mummies were flanked by gleaming savage swords and the ten commanders who commanded them were armed with armor and shields.

An immortal army that neither eats nor drinks is ready to march into a world suffering from drought.

Besides there was a crowd of helpless refugees outside the village and their bodies were the perfect means of fattening them.

‘So this is why they secretly accepted the refugees while leaving them alone. They wanted to kill the refugees and turn them into undead soldiers… Are they embalming them and turning them into mummies? That’s dangerous.’

Preserved and strengthened by magic the mummies are far more powerful undead monsters than regular zombies. If an army of undead that neither eats nor drinks were to invade at a time when the entirety of Korathar is suffering from a drought it would be a huge threat.

War cannot be fought without water. A castle besieged by an undead army will quickly run out of supplies and water and die.

However the core cities of the Eight Kingdoms are protected by the light of the King’s Fire but will the undead be able to move properly under the light of the King’s Fire?

‘I guess I’ll have to check.’

There are many enemies and Azadin is alone and he doesn’t have many arrows. The sword he carefully brought is still fine but he can feel that its condition is getting worse.

‘Well I cut the opponent’s sword. Even though I cut the opponent’s weak part with my strong part it’s natural for the blade to become dull.’

The weapons were weak and there were many enemies. However Azadin went down underground to investigate further.

    *********

“I wanted to prepare more thoroughly. The world doesn’t always go as planned.”

As if he were a lord before a campaign Count Kazel spoke before the undead army. The army was still fallen and had not been activated but when it rose its power would be formidable.

The Count looked up at the sky or rather at the passage leading to the Blood Baths above.

“The other two messengers must have been tough as well but you managed to deal with them. Are they really the 108th messengers?”

Azadin was moving in the shadows but it seemed that his approach had been detected. Stealth was of no use now that he had been discovered.

    “Yes it’s Command 108.”

Azadin landed on the statue. The Naga women licked their tongues at Azadin who dared to trample on their statues thinking that he was disrespectful but Azadin had already been branded a disrespectful by other humans. Now there was no reason for him to cower in fear of the criticism of Nagas who were not even human.

“I guess the other messengers have slit-like eyes. A guy like you is the 108th spirit? The two guys above were pretty strong but compared to you they were trash.”

“Ranking doesn’t necessarily prove strength. Being high is good but being low doesn’t necessarily mean… And they were stronger when they were messengers.”

Azadin glared at the Count. His eyes were invisible because of the mask but the Count felt his gaze piercing.

“Hmm… Are you angry because I insulted the messenger clan? I like you more and more. Are you really not thinking of changing your master? I won’t tell you to go. I need human servants too. I’ll give you whatever you want.”

“I want a copy of the New King’s Book?”

    “Oh that’s a bit difficult.”

“Then the negotiations have broken down.”

“Breakdown? Then you’ll die? We’ll just go out and slaughter the refugees gathered there after we’ve slaughtered you with this force. While our engineers salvage the good ones from the slaughtered bodies and turn them into mummies we’ll continue on and destroy everything in our path and take control of this Korasaar.”

The count said so and laughed.

“Do you really think you can conquer the world with an army of undead? The undead won’t be able to survive under the light of the King’s Flower?”

    Azadin asked about that.
