    #62. Arael’s Voice 2

Previously Salasma District Chief Salem said that the Count had brought in a strange witch to find a copy of the New King’s Book.

‘She’s a strange witch. Now that I think about it I guess you could say that Baroness Nort is a witch too?’

But then that doesn’t explain why she was held captive by the Mezeri Apostles. Even with Azadin’s ‘vision’ Baroness Nort’s body was clean.

Azadin has no eyes and the wind and moon within his body has been destroyed so he cannot use magic but instead he has strong black magic resistance and supernatural eyesight. This supernatural eyesight allows him to secretly see and feel supernatural powers so no monster has ever been able to fool Azadin’s ‘sight’.

While I was having such doubts a horse arrived at the entrance to the mansion. It was Baroness Noord who had returned.

    *********

    “Ah Azadin.”

Baroness Nort found Azadin talking with his companions in the garden and a corner of the garden covered in blood.

    “What is this?”

    “The cat caught the bird.”

    “Is that so?”

“By the way have you ever met the Count?”

“No. He said he doesn’t want to meet anyone.”

“Didn’t you say that you were worried about your kidnapping and called to hear the news?”

“He told me to report to the head maid.”

It was a great insult to the nobles. Of course the head maid was not a commoner. It was also a position where the daughters of lower nobles were temporarily dispatched for education.

Even so such treatment was insulting to the Count’s lover Baroness Noord.

“I hear there’s an army of ogres and goblins moving through the eastern hinterlands. Refugees keep coming in from the east.”

    “hmm.”

The Tooth King’s retinue and the ogres that Azadin had seen were probably the vanguard. If such things continue to come it will be time for Count Kazel to fulfill his duties as a count.

‘In that situation are you saying that you are only focused on finding a copy of the Shinwangjinseo?’

Azadin sighed and took the bone wand out of his bosom.

“Madam can you use this magic tool?”

    “Yes? Me?”

    “yes.”

“Well this looks like something made by followers of the Kurt tribe. The King of Tooth or the King of Claws and Horns?”

“Why are the Kurts looking for a copy of the Book of the New King?”

“From their perspective the throne of the Yaegas and the light of the royal fire emitted from that throne must be very painful. In fact the Mezeri retinue you saw yesterday were not displaying their original abilities properly. They are faster and stronger in the outside world where the light of the royal fire does not reach.”

The light of the King’s Flower was also a large-scale barrier to repel evil spirits. By interpreting the Book of the New King and opposing the light of the King’s Flower the realm of humanity was taken away and the entire continent of Hybris was once again ruled by the Kurt Gods.

    That must be the purpose.

Even without that it was only natural that Kurt’s followers would covet the grimoire of great power.

‘No but I actually got three of them but I have no idea how to use them.’

Azadin was very disappointed that he could not use magic.

    ‘Arael’s voice. Damn it’s awesome.’

Azadin became fearful of his younger sister Arael’s power after seeing her create artificial spirits with evil magic that resembled the Emperor’s voice.

If it was the Arael he knew as a child he could easily defeat her now. But how much more has Arael developed in the meantime?

“By the way Azadin have you eaten?”

“Oh I just had a quick bite.”

“Well then would you like a light drink? I just happened to get some really good leaves. Since the backing is dirty I’ll go to my hobby room to see you. I’ll try using the wand there too.”

    “Um… yes.”

Azadin had no reason to refuse so he accepted her offer.

    *********

The Baroness’s hobby room was a well-ventilated terrace on the second floor. It was probably originally a place for fencing and physical training but the maids had transformed it into a more formal space by decorating it with flowers and setting up tables.

There the Baroness newly dressed in a dress greeted Azadin…

    ‘hmm?’

Azadin was taken aback by the Baroness’s deep gaze.

    ‘No way right?’

He sat down looking at the Baroness smiling at him.

    “Lord Azadin.”

She greeted Azadin with a smile.

“Did you experience any inconvenience during your stay?”

“No. I am comfortable thanks to my wife’s consideration.”

“Thank goodness. I apologize for showing my shabby appearance to your benefactor.”

“Oh no. Rather than that the wand…..”

“Yes. First of all I’m sorry for showing off such an embarrassing talent. Please don’t blame me too much if I fail.”

The Baroness spoke and used her wand. Then a green flame appeared at the end of the bone wand. The flame moved slowly facing one direction and then went out.

Another new flame emerges from the wand follows the same direction and then goes out.

‘The flame is directional and the distance it burns out probably corresponds to the actual distance.’

The longer this fire burns the farther away it will be.

Azadin immediately understood the magical structure of the bone wand. But…

    “This direction…..”

“Yes this is your count’s castle.”

    “okay.”

It seems that the Count has already obtained several copies of the New King’s Book.

Well since there are some copies of the Shinwangjinseo they must know of its existence. Otherwise they wouldn’t have just sent all their children away to find copies of the Shinwangjinseo.

“Your Majesty you are looking for a copy of the New King’s Book.”

    “yes.”

“If you don’t mind may I ask why?”

    “Um that’s….”

Azadin wondered if he could tell her this.

“Is it because of the mission of the Herald Clan? Well it was said that the Herald Clan was the reason for the leak of the copy of the New King’s Book. During the Battle of Tarasar’s Succession Lord Astarte leaked the New King’s Book to the Herald Clan and instead with their help became the King of Tarasar. When this fact was discovered he could not overcome the shame and abdicated the throne became a monk and became a judge of the King’s Church. It is said that this was because of the responsibility for leaking the copy of the New King’s Book as a pledge.”

    “You are very knowledgeable.”

“There are many stories to be told in the courts of nobles. As long as you don’t drink too much just listening to them can be quite rewarding.”

She cast her distant gaze toward the count’s castle.

“It already feels like a long time ago that I properly entered that palace.”

    “With the Count’s department…..”

“We haven’t even talked for a long time. It’s not like we’re even married to begin with.”

    “okay.”

    “Is your benefactor married?”

    “no.”

“You seem to be of sufficient age to get married so why is that?”

“Well that’s because your face looks like this.”

Azadin took off his mask to show his wounds.

“Oh my? Are your eyes… okay? No but….”

“I am not blind. I showed you what you could not see.”

Azadin put his mask back on but the Baroness shook her head.

“No you are very beautiful. You have a dignified and elegant appearance.”

    “….”

Azadin felt embarrassed as he felt the gaze of the Baroness looking at him with longing. Then he suddenly came to his senses. What Azadin needed now was information about the Count. Since it was certain that the Count had a copy of the New King’s Book how could he obtain it? That was the question he had to ponder.

And Arael. Arael’s voice had contacted me first so I had to prepare for her messenger to come to find Azadin.

“Oh I… If the Count has a copy of the New King’s Book do you have any idea where he might be keeping it?”

“Hmm. Well… I’m not sure about that either. The Count has been taking a liking to a strange woman of unknown identity recently. Rumor has it that she’s a witch from the Btuma Jungle.”

    “Are you a witch?”

“Yes. That’s why I was actually thinking of selling this mansion as well. I was thinking of taking a new husband to a small mansion in the Baronial domain of Nort and then leaving this place.”

I have lost his favor and I would rather live my own life than remain in the count’s court and waste my energy.

    She said so and smiled.

“But if it’s for my benefactor I’ll try my best even if it’s ugly.”

I’ve already lost interest in the Count’s court but if Azadin wants I’ll help him investigate.

    That’s what she was saying.

“Oh yes. Thank you very much.”

“So by any chance… are you thinking of marrying me?”

    “Huh?!”

Azadin ended up saying something stupid.

“I am ashamed to say this but I fell in love with you at first sight when you killed those apostles of Mezeri. Now that chivalry has fallen to the ground and become a laughing stock I can confidently say that I have only seen someone as beautiful and noble as you in old tales.”

    “Ah…Madam Bu?”

Azadin was taken aback by the Baroness who suddenly proposed to him. At that moment a young woman came running into the hobby room. It was Medium.

    “Azadin!”

    “Oh why?”

“The Apostle of Arael has come to see you!”

    “Arael’s Apostle? What is that?”

Azadin stood up in embarrassment and turned to the Baroness. He had to answer her proposal.

    “I’m sorry. I have someone I like so that’s a bit….”

“Oh I see. I envy you. That there is someone who is loved by such a benefactor.”

When the Baroness said so Medium shrugged.

    “Are you jealous?”

“…You’re not. Do you know what’s going on and why are you meddling right now?”

    *********

Azadin who had suffered because of the absurd actions of Medium had to face another absurd reality. The apostles who had come as Arael were actually Derek an executive of the Korasaar Peddler Guild and his party.

    “Oh we meet again Azadin.”

Derek is embarrassed. He is a former herald of the Corasar Peddler Guild and a noble belonging to House Saban one of the five founding families of the Herald Clan. It is only natural that he would be embarrassed when he sees Azadin since he has sided with the traitor Arael.

“Derek you’re an apostle of Arael? I didn’t see any signs of that when I saw you before. Are you a great actor?”

“That’s… It wasn’t like that from the beginning.”

    “You’ve changed your mind recently?”

“Betrayal is too harsh a word. Arael is the one who will fulfill our clan’s long-cherished wish. As her name suggests she is an angel of justice.”

“But didn’t you break your ankle while messing with that very angel of justice? That’s why you retired?”

Arael was a peerless beauty with black hair and purple eyes and all men of her age had a crush on her. All of them except for her blood relative Azadin.

Of course so did Derek. He got hurt by Arael’s quarrel and that hurt feelings led to a violent conflict and he was permanently damaged when he lost to Arael and retired from the Herald.

It would be impossible for a normal person to betray his clan and join the ranks of a woman who beat him up and forced him to retire.
