    #59. Darkness of Salasma 7

It was good to find a copy of the Book of the New King but this book of magic has a life of its own. It cannot be touched carelessly by the unholy and evil.

“What the hell. What kind of grimoire is this? The power of the Yaegasu Gods. This is it!”

At that moment rats began to squeal at the entrance to the wine cellar. Azadin had come in.

    *********

    -Tick tick….

A wave of rats approaches Azadin.

    “Oh no!”

Azadin quickly leapt onto the barrel as he saw the swarm of rats moving in a wave-like manner. The rats tried to climb up the barrel and attack but Azadin unbuckled the moonbow on his waist and only half-stepped without pulling the string.

He pulled back the bowstring and released it while striking the bowstring and the elasticity of the bowstring sent it flying like a whip and swept the barrel. The rats crawling on top of the barrel were swept away by the bowstring and torn to pieces.

    -Whuh!

The rats are swept away with a whip-like sound.

“The bowstring is breaking… This is no time to be frugal!”

If you keep hitting the rats with the bowstring they will die as soon as they climb up the barrel.

“Um… Stop it. That guy over there won’t be killed with that.”

When the fallen knight gave his order the rats stopped attacking.

    “You’re a messenger! A messenger clan!”

Azadin looked at the man dressed as a Knight of the Salvation Order.

“Are you a fallen knight? Of the Salvation Knights?”

“Fall? Ha ha ha. What about fall? Now I only serve the true God. Not a false archangel!”

    “False Archangel?”

Azadin’s expression crumpled. It was an unbearable insult for a former paladin of the Order of the Salvation to say such a thing in front of someone who believed in the Archangels of the Trinity.

“Yeah. If you believe in the Archangels you’ll be granted white magic? That’s all bullshit. The Angels are already dead and their corpses have no power. The Salvation Knights are a huge group of frauds!”

The paladin said so and pointed to his surcoat. It was a surcoat with the symbol of the Order of the Salvation Knights overlaid with the symbol of the Pyrrhic Mejeri.

“The Kurts are the true gods. Their time is coming! The Yaegas are powerless because they have mixed blood with humans. They cannot handle it. When the true gods rule this world we their apostles will become the new nobles and rule this land!”

“So you became an apostle of Mezeri who harms people? What a pitiful man. A true knight is one who practices the virtues of wisdom mercy and courage. Of course you can’t use the power of the Salvation Knights. You’re not even close to virtue.”

Azadin lashed out at the paladin which seemed to have irritated him once again.

“You dare to discuss the faith of the Salvation Knights with me? You soulless blasphemer?”

“In this situation shouldn’t I be more concerned about your soul?”

    “What a funny guy.”

As the paladin raised his chin several shadows rose above the cask. They were were rats and their bodies were covered in horrible swellings.

    “Are they Mejeri’s followers?”

Azadin strapped the Moonbow back onto his waist and replaced his weapon with a halberd head. The paladin snickered.

“You have offended me but you still seem to have some pretty good skills. Judging from how you came this far and how you handled the rats earlier. How is it? Will you also take this opportunity to serve the true god?”

The paladin tried to persuade Azadin but Azadin flatly refused.

“I’m sorry but I believe in the Trinity of Archangels.”

    “….”

The expression on the fallen knight’s face became quite a sight.

There was an awkward silence for a moment.

    “why?”

“No wait. Are you serious? You a soulless blasphemer have faith in the Knights of Salvation?”

The fallen paladin was shocked by Azadin’s words. He had seen many fanatics who claimed to believe in the faith of the Order of the Salvation but he had never seen one who truly believed.

However this herald clan claims to believe in the faith of the Knights of Salvation.

    “okay.”

“You crazy bastard! Didn’t you hear what I said? The three archangels are already dead and they have no power! The only knights in the Rescue Knights who can use magic are originally from the Yaegas clan! They’re just nobles!”

“It doesn’t matter whether they have power or not. It matters whether their virtue has aesthetics or not.”

    “But you were originally….”

The messenger clan is the ones who committed the crime of killing the Yaegasu clan. Because of that they are persecuted by everyone in Hybris.

Are you looking for virtue and aesthetics from that perspective?

“The Archangels of the Trinity are powerless and the Knights Templar are frauds. I say this from experience. This belief has only betrayed me!”

“It doesn’t matter. Even if the three archangels are powerless I have already been saved in advance. So faith cannot betray me. I am only afraid that I will betray faith.”

Azadin said and took a stance.

“This guy is really crazy. He seems to have some skills but that’s enough. This is just unpleasant. Die!”

The paladin had high regard for Azadin’s skills but his dislike of his beliefs was greater than his fondness for his skills.

The sick members of Mezeri’s clan began to rush towards Azadin. Not only that but the rats also climbed onto the barrel again and attacked. However Azadin calmly said this while looking at the enemies rushing in from all sides.

“Let me give you one piece of advice.”

He climbed onto the barrel and moved towards the sick members of Mezeri’s retinue who were trying to attack him.

“In this terrain I have an overwhelming advantage!”

    *********

Azadin kicked the ‘Sick One of Mejeri’ with all his might as if he was kicking a ball. The head of the one who had been climbing up the barrel was shattered and his body fell backwards. Azadin seemed to fall under the barrel with the same momentum he had been running at…

He jumped grabbed the pole that was holding the barrels together to keep them from tipping spun around and landed on another barrel.

The sick one followed Azadin and jumped from keg to keg in pursuit but Azadin spun around and roundhouse kicked the one in the air.

    -puck!

Azadin’s roundhouse kick hits the leg of the sick man who was floating in the air causing his body to spin around in the air like a top. The sick man who hit his head on the barrel falls over backwards.

The rats climbed the barrel and pounced on him but Azadin dodged them by running on top of the barrel then released his cloak and slid down swinging it in a big way. A bunch of rats got stuck in Azadin’s cloak.

Azadin grabbed the cloak and made it into a sack threw it on the ground and swung the cloak again. The impact of the sack caused the bodies of dead rats to pour out like bullets.

    “Ugh…..”

    “No surprise…..”

The sick in Mezeri were those whose illness had progressed to the point where they could not speak properly. Even these people could not help but admire Azadin’s performance.

The way he effectively utilizes terrain features and repel enemies is refreshing.

“He’s crazy. But he’s really skilled.”

The paladin was astonished by Azadin’s amazing performance.

On top of the barrels which are usually difficult for ordinary people to move the heralds run freely and use the terrain to taunt the sick who come up.

    “ah….”

“Wow that’s great. Is this the Emperor’s messenger?”

Those who were conscious among those tied up were amazed by Azadin’s actions.

The sick members of Mezeri’s retinue are not only fast but also strong possessing a madness disease that grants them much faster speed than the common wererats. In addition if they are hit by them they will suffer from a disease that will lead to death.

But what should I be able to access?

Even if they are faster than regular Ware Rats if they speed up recklessly on top of the barrel their feet will slip through the gaps in the barrel or they will fall straight down. However Azadin lightly teases them kicks them under the barrel cuts off their ankles with the halberd head and throws them down.

    “hmm?”

The knight suddenly looked up as he saw a flickering light. The light from the pages of the copy of the New King’s Book that had been shining above the wine cellar’s ceiling was flickering.

‘You chose that guy! This is ridiculous. The Yaegasu God Tribe’s grimoire recognizes a guy with Yaegasu God Tribe blood on his hands?’

But if you think about it the other way around it’s a good thing.

‘If I kill that guy I can get a copy of the New King’s Book.’

The power that resists the copy of the Grimoire from now being in his possession is being squeezed out by the magical power stored within the book itself.

If the new owner chooses the messenger clan as his carrier the resistance will inevitably be weakened. If the messenger clan is killed the resistance of the copy of the New King’s Book will be weakened and it will be easier to seize the magic book.

“I guess I can’t just leave you to your own devices any longer.”

The paladin stood up drawing his sword. The rats from under the vault swarmed at his feet.

    -Kiririririk!

The rats moved in unison and lifted the paladin to the height of a keg.

    “huh?”

Azadin was surprised to see that sight.

“I will show you the power of the Apostle of Mejeri!”

As the paladin raised his sword an ominous black aura rippled across the blade.

    “Ugh!”

Azadin threw something. It was a broken arrowhead. The arrowhead of the arrow he had broken off to set fire to the building when he entered earlier. Azadin hurled it like a dagger but the paladin snickered and swung his sword.

A black storm swept towards Azadin sweeping away the arrowheads.

    “this!”

Azadin dodged by jumping to the side causing another person who was hanging from the ceiling with a rope to be hit directly by the black storm.

    “Ugh. Euaaaah!”

His life was sucked out of him and his body became emaciated. He had been a man with some flesh but it was as if time had suddenly passed quickly for him alone and he now looked ten years older.

“You avoided it. That was a wise choice!”

The paladin swung his sword as he chased after Azadin on the waves of rats. Every time he did a black gust of wind would rise and aim for Azadin.

    “Ugh!”

Azadin dodged the black gust of wind but then realized that it would hit the person behind him.

    “Hold on!”

Azadin kicked the hanging man backwards allowing him to avoid the black gust of wind. In this critical situation he not only saved himself but also saved those who were tied up as sacrifices.

“Wow! Do you really believe in angels? The messenger clan is trying to save people!”

“Shut up! Is saving people that weird?”

Azadin threw another arrowhead hitting the paladin. However it failed to penetrate the creature’s plate armor. No matter how strong Azadin’s throw was it was impossible for a light arrowhead to penetrate plate armor in a situation where the ground was uncertain.

    “You’re being ridiculous!”

The paladin blew the black gust of wind again.

    “Ugh!”

As Azadin tried to avoid the black gust of wind he realized that the person behind him was the Baroness a woman in a satin dress.

    It’s too late to evacuate.
