#503. Night of the Soulless Unbeliever 14

“Your Majesty. I am glad to see you in good health.”

Medium approached Azadin still handcuffed and held out his hands.

    “Medium. I’m glad you’re safe.

Azadin lifted Sok’s rod and touched her handcuffs.

As soon as Sok’s rod touched it the handcuffs made of black ice were instantly disintegrated and absorbed into the rod freeing Medium.

“But you’re talking about your ex-lover in front of me your wife and you’re making such a wistful expression. Isn’t that too much?”

“…Aldis is like a mother to me. It seems very wrong to call her an ex-lover.”

“But my heart still feels uneasy. I cannot help but feel jealous when Your Majesty shows such admiration for me. Even if you accuse me of being narrow-minded I have nothing to say.”

“No way. No Medium. How can I blame you?”

“No. Your Majesty is the king so you are in a position to have as many concubines as you want but I am just a narrow-minded girl who is jealous of someone else in Your Majesty’s heart so you should reprimand me. Hmph!”

The medium seemed to be firmly twisted.

Jibek looked at the medium and remembered what Sok had said.

The reason Emperor Yaeslat didn’t last long after unifying the world and disappeared without a proper successor causing the eight kingdoms to split again was because Yaeslat’s great power quickly destroyed his body. Sir Sok clearly said so.

And perhaps that is the truth without a single lie.

Even without Lord Sok saying anything everyone knows that Azadin has made enormous sacrifices to get here.

He barely survived on the brink of death by receiving his sister’s blood and flesh and suffered on the throne to protect the world with the light of the royal flower.

How long will Azadin have left? At least not longer than Yaeslat’s reign.

There is no way that Medium doesn’t know that fact. That is why Medium deliberately scolds Azadin and overcomes his sadness and anxiety with laughter.

    “hmm….”

Are you doing that to shake off your sadness and anxiety?

At that moment someone was heard muttering next to Jibek.

    “Can’t that place be mine…?”

Ismail silently reflected on Midiam’s words.

    “Ismail. Are you okay?”

When asked by Zibek Ismail showed him the wounded area.

The spot where the rapier had hit had completely healed and formed a scab.

    “I really can’t handle it. Your Majesty….”

Jibek also knew that Ismail had been in love with Medium for a long time.

So even if I suddenly heard something out of the blue I could quickly figure out what the context was.

“I want to be like Your Majesty.”

‘If someone heard this it would sound like I was plotting treason…’

But Jibek could tell what was in Ismail’s mind when he said those words.

Azadin and Ismail were both of low status among the herald clan who were looked down upon by the people of Hybris.

But unlike Ismail who was content to be with the Medium despite his lowly status Azaddin had a bigger dream.

And the only thing that sustains him is a few memories with one person.

And yet you live so happily.

I want to be happy like that person. I want to share in the author’s happiness even a little. It makes me think like that.

“I wish I could hate you but I have to admit it.”

Ismail who had always been nagging at Azadin had no choice but to admit it.

    He liked Azadin.

I hope that someday he too can recall this unrequited love with joy just like Azadin.

I hope he too can become a person filled with joy like Azadin.

    “Hmm.”

Jibek could see the figure of the one who had put down his burden on Ismail.

Jibek who also had a gloomy personality sympathized with Ismail’s words.

Now that I think about it I suddenly remembered Jecht who has a gloomy personality.

How is he feeling right now?

    *********

Inquisitor Jecht was a man who did not know happiness.

Since his unwanted ordination and becoming a knight he has always been gloomy and angry.

Could that be why just before Azadin became the emperor who would unite the world and achieve a great feat that would be remembered in human history the elves brought him the Sword of the Nether.

Will you become the king of Korasaur and live a life of wealth and honor?

Will you betray humanity and bring a terrible hell on this earth where humans cannot live?

The elves came with such a proposal.

Any person in their right mind would obviously choose the former.

No matter how much envy and jealousy you may feel toward the emperor isn’t it too unprofitable to choose the latter?

However since Jecht was a man who did not know happiness he had no interest in the wealth and fame that would come after becoming king.

His desire for the throne was nothing more than a kind of self-discovery.

    Why am I so unhappy?

Was it because I was abandoned as royalty? Could finding the throne somehow compensate for this misfortune?

That’s what I was aiming for when I first wanted the throne but once I got my hands on it managing it became a hassle.

After all life is absurd and painful.

That’s why he decided to betray Azadin and headed to the Btooma royal castle where Astartair was staying accompanied by the elves.

    *********

Astarte had been cutting down on his drinking recently.

As an alcoholic the process of cutting down on alcohol was like cutting through bones and flesh.

Terrible physical pain and even worse mental pain weigh him down.

A foolish king who fell for a beauty queen and leaked the New King’s Book. A traitor who leaked the New King’s Book to the Jeonryung Clan.

That terrible mistake came to him at every moment. To escape this mental pain he drank alcohol and destroyed his body.

    But now he’s quit drinking.

The mission given to him by Azadin was to maintain a clear mind in order to deal with the Naga and the fish-people who threatened humanity.

    “Sir Astarte. Are you present?”

Astarte opened his eyes at the sound of Zect’s voice calling him.

Jecht who had come with the elves was looking at him with a strange look.

    “Ject? What’s going on?”

“You’ve been practicing the New King’s Book. I heard you haven’t been drinking alcohol lately.”

    “We have to do something.”

Astarte said so and raised his hand. The iron stakes big and small tied to his body began to vibrate.

    It’s clearly a battle stance.

But he doesn’t do this for nothing.

From the moment he entered Zect radiated a terrifying murderous aura.

“Are you really going to do this?”

Astarte didn’t ask why he was betraying her.

I was thinking that Zect might betray me at this point.

If we want to stop Azadin now on the eve of unification of the world the only way is now.

“You don’t ask why I betray you.”

“Sir Jecht. I thought you would do this.”

    “Why did you think so?”

    Zect asked the question:

It was his decision but he couldn’t put his decision into words.

It felt unreal like I was just floating through a dream.

It’s not that he harbors any hatred or betrayal toward Azadin nor is it because he has a desire for power.

As he walked towards his own destruction he sought answers for his actions from others.

“If I say it out loud it sounds like such a frivolous thing. You probably know that too. I don’t want to make light of my words so I won’t say anything more.”

Zect also had something on his mind.

    He smiled bitterly.

“Why does Lord Astarte harbor such ambitions for the Emperor? Surely you know by now that he is not your son?”

“He is the son of the man who loved the woman I loved. The man who loved the woman I loved betrayed his clan for the woman who sacrificed herself for the future of his clan. As a result he was cursed and died and Azadin was born.”

Since Astadair became the southern commander of the Azadin army he obtained information from the messenger clans and learned about Azadin’s origins.

    Traitor Acre.

Why did he steal the copy of the New King’s Book and how was Azadin born under a curse?

“I have lived a shameful life. I am a fool who fell for the beauties of the Jeonryung clan and leaked the Book of the New King. My name was tarnished with dishonor across the continent and I had nowhere to run so I escaped to alcohol. Every moment I relied on alcohol to escape reality but all I ever wished for was for her to come back.”

Astarte confessed her most shameful secret.

Despite such things rather than hating the messenger clan he survived until now waiting for the moment when she would return.

“So when I heard that a man named Acre stood up for her I felt even more ashamed. I said I loved her but I only loved her body her beauty and her talent. I completely forgot that she was also a victim. No I didn’t even try to find out from the beginning. After all I was only thinking about my own safety from the beginning.”

    Astarte rose from her throne.

“As a man who loved the same woman I respect Acre. He was willing to be angry for the woman who sacrificed her for the future of the clan and all. If Azadin were his child I would willingly burn my body and soul to comply with his will. And isn’t it an honorable thing to do? To revive the old laws of the forgotten Order and protect this world with wisdom courage and mercy. It is an honorable and noble thing that makes me doubt whether it is something that can be given to a loser like me.”

“So if you’ve quit drinking then persuasion will be impossible.”

    Zect drew his sword.

Astarte was once the king of Tarasar and was also a great wizard who wrote a copy of the Book of the New King.

At his peak his abilities were clearly superior to Jecht’s but Astarte was addicted to alcohol and abused his body and soul.

Even if I take a break now I won’t be able to match Jecht. My body which has been ruined by decades of drinking won’t recover that quickly.

But the determination that was now felt from Astarte was by no means something that could be ignored.

“Then I’ll go first! You have more numbers!”

Astarte held the leather strap with the spikes in her left hand and swung the leather strap with her right holding the sword.

The nails stuck in the leather straps popped out and started moving in different directions.

Jet ignored all the spikes and jumped in straight delivering the shortest range stab.

    -Yaegasu’s wrath!

Jecht’s sword glowed and shot out a spear of light.

But Astarte’s spikes spread out in the air rotating with their sharp tips together to form a circular shield.

A rainbow of light followed the path of the rotating spike forming a shield of light.

    -Yaegasu’s wrath!

And Astaroth also cast Yaegas’s Wrath.

The attacks of Jecht and Astarte collided simultaneously causing an explosion.

    “Ugh!”

    “Huh?!”

The Telvarin elves did not dare approach him.

The impact of Astarte and Jecht clashing was so great that the nearby elves were torn apart.

“Oh no you weren’t just coming in confidently because you were confident?”

Surprisingly it was Astarte who gained the upper hand in the clash.
