Night of the Soulless Heathens – 493

#494. Night of the Soulless Blasphemous 5
“What if no one loves me Captain? What if my own people try to kill me?”
Azadin knew very well how miserable it was to live a life without being loved by anyone.
It’s too easy to tell people to just endure that life.
“I don’t know. Maybe I spoke too easily. Yes. I understand that you are afraid that your own people will hate you and rebel against you. But isn’t it painful to live without giving up on yourself?”
“Can you forgive me Captain? Can I be forgiven? I killed people. I didn’t stop them from pillaging and harassing but rather I joined in. I was afraid of being hated by my own people so I closed my eyes!”
“This may sound old-fashioned but a true sinner is not someone who apologizes after receiving the assurance of forgiveness. A person who tries to correct his sins even if he is not forgiven is the one who truly knows the weight of sin.”
“Ha hahaha.”
Selim laughed through his tears.
“Just trust in the virtues of the Knights. To admit weakness and confess sins is courage. And to forgive a sinner who has confessed his sins is mercy. If there is virtue there will be forgiveness.”
“Yeah that’s right.”
Selim picked up his battle axe.
“You’re stupid Selim. Do you see the child here who is pregnant with your child?!”
The Godmother brought the Minotaur woman and thrust her blade into her belly.
“The gods of Yaegas have lost their power and are gone. If we endure this cold and survive our masters the elves will reorganize the world under a new order.”
“How can the teachings of false emperors and angels who have already been defeated turned to stone and died survive this night?”
“Come back right now. I don’t want to erase my grandchild with my own hands.”
The godmother fearing Azadin’s advance sent several of her subordinates to threaten Selim’s child as a hostage.
“hey.”
As Azadin tried to move his godmother held the knife to the pregnant woman’s belly and slashed it. The sharp blade cut through the thick leather garment causing blood to ooze out.
“Oh my. The Emperor. Don’t move. Well I don’t mind killing him since he’s just one of the Emperor’s countless subjects.”
“ha.”
Azadin shook his head.
“Selim. Can you take care of that godmother? She must be your mother.”
“Yes Captain. She has many children besides me anyway. I am just one of many children to her. What did I stupidly expect?”
“Huh! That’s right. You really are an abandoned child!”

The godmother stabbed the pregnant minotaur in the lower abdomen with a dagger as if nothing was wrong. Even with the strength of an old woman’s grip the dagger held a terrifying power that could split even a minotaur ogre apart.
But the dagger was blocked by a shield of golden light.
The Rescue Knights’ sacred magic Heavenly Guardian has been activated.
“Huh?!”
Surprisingly Selim used a spell to block her sword.
Until now Selim had not been able to cast spells even when he was the commander of the imperial army.
However by facing and confessing his own weakness he was able to use the power of the Salvation Knights.
Before the godmother could realize this fact or react an arrow pierced her head.
-Pfft!
“Ugh. Kill him! No matter what kill Selim’s son!!!”
The godmother collapsed screaming with her throat boiling with blood and phlegm.
“You can’t leave it like that!”
Before the other Minotaurs could react the arrows and magic struck slaughtering the Minotaurs surrounding the pregnant Minotaur.
Before Azadin could draw his bow again the minotaurs charged.
Azadin picked up the spear that had fallen to the ground and cut off the noses mouths and jaws of the Minotaurs then pierced their hearts.
The Minotaurs were in disarray and fell in an instant.
“This kind of person!”
The enraged Minotaur swung his axe and tried to strike but a small dwarf sprang forward and blocked the Minotaur’s attack with his war hammer.
‘A heavenly blow!’
The Rescue Knights’ sacred magic was activated sending the Minotaur’s axe flying into the sky.
And the holy light struck the Minotaur’s head striking him down.
Starting with that the residents all rushed at the Minotaurs.
*********
After the battle all the hostile Minotaurs were defeated.
The young Minotaurs and the female Minotaurs gave up the fight and surrendered.
“Okay. I will accept your surrender.”
The townspeople cheered as Azadin accepted the Minotaur’s submission.
Although Azadin dealt with most of them it was a great victory for them having defeated the tyrannical Minotaurs by their own hands.
“Hahahaha!”
The dwarf who had first led the rebellion burst into laughter and approached Selim.
“Oh a drug addict. Oh no Carson.”
He was Selim’s adjutant.
After Selim was corrupted by his own people he had split with them and now seems to have come to this refuge.
“Carson. You’ve had a hard time.”
“Yes Your Majesty! I am glad to see you are safe. And so is General Selim.”
Selim looked at his adjutant and bowed his head.
“I’m sorry. I’m stupid.”

“What Captain you’re stupid. I know this isn’t something that happened yesterday or today.”
“….”
“But Your Majesty no Your Majesty the Emperor we ask that you accept our confession.”
“shrift?”
“Yes. We were made knights by the Empress’s appointment but we have disrespectfully abandoned our beliefs and become slaves and subservient. We have abandoned our virtues and become subservient committing dishonorable acts that cannot be called knightly.”
These are the ones appointed as knights by Medium. In fact most of those here were knights appointed by Medium.
Even when it was said that anyone could become a knight if they had the faith most were obsessed with the power of miracles and divine magic and when the great cold and despairing night came to swallow them up they all abandoned their faith like an old pair of shoes and went into hiding.
I was excited and thrilled by the miracle that Medium had brought and I vowed to remain loyal to virtue in the future…
Faced with reality the promise was shattered into nothingness.
Even though they could easily defeat the Minotaurs if they had the power of divine magic they were overwhelmed by their tyranny.
Even when I thought about it myself it was so miserable that I couldn’t believe it.
“Then the person you are seeking atonement from is wrong.”
Azadin turned to the residents gathered in the shelter.
“I’m sorry. It was my shortcomings that caused you all this pain.”
Selim also knelt beside Azadin and bowed his head before the people.
“I don’t even have the shame to ask for your forgiveness. I’m sorry everyone. I was afraid too. I was afraid of losing my fellow countrymen that I had finally found… Even though I was this big I lost faith and wandered.”
“We were afraid too. The Empress had appointed us as knights and at the time we were so excited by the power and miracles of divine magic. We threw away the beliefs and vows we had made back then like old shoes and before we knew it we were just hiding from the mob and extending our lowly lives.”
Many soldiers including Azadin and Selim Khasun came forward confessed their sins and asked for forgiveness.
People who were excited by the miracle and swore loyalty but then threw away that oath like an old pair of shoes and gave in to the atrocities they saw before their eyes. They too felt ashamed.
Of course this did not heal people’s wounds.
Their families were murdered tortured and enslaved forced to work outside their cold haven.
But since Selim did not actively step forward and kill the residents everyone had no choice but to look back on themselves and wash away the pain with hope.
“Then Your Majesty what do you plan to do now?”
“Go to Kaspar to gather information and gather your colleagues. The more people gather the stronger the power of miracles will be.”
Azadin said he was hopeful that he could win.
Although the situation was desperate those who had experienced victory found hope in Azadin’s words.
“But Your Majesty you came from Chongqing? Where are the aides accompanying Your Majesty?”
“That’s right…..”
Azadin confessed the truth that no one had been able to convince him of until now.
“Well Your Majesty’s sermons are old-fashioned.”
“There are things that are usually difficult for people to accept.”
“Yeah that’s right.”
Azadin agreed with his subordinates’ jokes.
Azadin has been moving people with words so far.
He has moved them by deceiving and tricking them when necessary and has also absorbed countless enemies into his forces.
It’s not that I’m not good at speaking.
However the reason he could not convince people was because Azadin himself was exhausted from despair.
How can you convey hope to others if you don’t believe in it yourself?
So his voice could not move people.
However when he met Selim here and saw the commonality in Selim that he was a lonely being who lived with the teachings of the Knights as his light Azadin was able to forget his despair.
So I was able to convince people and give them back their miraculous powers.
‘Ah I thought I had come this far alone. I believed I had come this far by my own power by deceiving and manipulating the masses when necessary and by my own intrigue and cunning. But in the end I couldn’t bear the anxiety and loneliness unless I confirmed that there was virtue in the hearts of others.’
Even a single superman who tried to achieve the feat of unifying the world could not cover the world with his beliefs alone.
If there were no echo to confirm my belief and no faith that others share the same conviction the cold of the night would swallow up even a single individual’s flame.
“Then I will go and persuade the others.”
Selim beat his chest.
“Are you okay? It’s cold outside. Most people wouldn’t be able to handle it.”
Azadin’s movement was relatively free thanks to the fact that his defense magic against cold was raised several levels through his deal with Sok. This was possible because Azadin had overwhelming magical power compared to others.
Selim also knew that fact well but he still tried to go forward.
“Of course Captain. Even those you failed to convince would be more willing to listen to an idiot like me.”
“I’m sorry.”
Azadin smiled bitterly at Selim’s words that he would try to persuade those he had failed to convince.
A true penitent is one who confesses and atons for his sins without being promised forgiveness.
True hope is to continue to believe believing that hope itself is salvation even if salvation is not promised.
The night still howls outside the walls and the cold freezes the world endlessly but Azadin has found hope once again.
