Night of the Soulless Heathens – 49

#49. Aldis 4
Deep in the Kerim Mountains of the Arang Kingdom lies the sanctuary of the Herald Clan. Inside the rugged rocky mountains where winds and fogs swell and ordinary people dare not cross the Herald Clan receives training and then spreads out to various parts of the world serving the Emperor according to their contract of service and living for the wish of liberating their clan.
However once every two years during the Hajj festival messengers from all over the world return to the sanctuary to report on the progress of the mission process the fallen and injured reward those who deserve rewards discipline those who deserve punishment and carry out personnel transfers.
In the Kerim Mountains where the festival of the summer was still far away a messenger was humming as she climbed the cliff. It was a silver-haired girl named Aldis.
“Oh I brought too many gifts this time. I don’t know if they’ll like it.”
Aldis stood in front of the sanctuary rejoicing at the prospect of his hometown. The path was difficult for ordinary people to find as fog and gusts of wind frequently occurred. However Aldis called out to the Emperor’s voice and followed his guidance breaking through the maze and entering the sanctuary.
-Shoot….
What unfolded before my eyes was a waterfall and a valley located on top of a mountain.
“Oh this time you came in from the southeast. Oh I always say that this place is a great place to visit. It’s just that there are a lot of mosquitoes.”
Aldis was speaking to the Emperor’s voice.
[You have the blood of the Yaegasu Gods flowing thickly in your veins. Do not sacrifice your precious blood to mosquitoes. If killing is beneficial then it is killing mosquitoes.]
The Emperor’s voice urged Aldis to kill the mosquitoes.
“If that’s the case.”
Aldis lightly cast a spell at the mosquitoes flying towards him.
-A series of paintings of flowers birds wind and moon!
Countless bullets of power intercepted all the mosquitoes flying in and the remaining bullets of power seeped into the bushes killing all the mosquitoes they found and flew around until the magical power ran out.
Aldis was satisfied with the sight and walked away leading the Kerim goats. That was when.
-Visiting….
Something fell into the valley water.
“Um… what is it?”
[Aida.]
The Emperor’s voice answered Aldis’ question.
“Huh?!”
Surprised Aldis ran to the valley. The current was very rough and the water temperature was low so even adults had difficulty swimming. A child fell into such a valley.
“no way!”
Aldis threw away his moon palace and other valuables as if throwing them away and jumped into the stream.

When Azadin regained consciousness he saw beautiful purple eyes looking down at him. Aldis was shedding tears.
“Azadin! Are you okay?”
“Hey Aldis?”
“Why on earth did you do that! Why did you go all the way to the outskirts of the sanctuary… you idiot!”
“….”
Azadin realized that he and Aldis were both naked and tried to turn his head away in embarrassment. But Aldis hugged Azadin tightly. The cold water of the valley had made his body temperature drop so much that Aldis’ warm embrace felt so good.
“….”
Seeing Aldis cry for him made my heart ache so much that I couldn’t bear it. In fact I couldn’t bring myself to say that I had tried to commit suicide because I was miserable and struggling because I had no confidence in living.
“Oh what’s wrong with Aldis? There’s still a month left until the festival.”
“I came early because I was worried that some mischievous child might fall into the water while I was gone. I also brought a bunch of presents.”
“….”
“Is the training difficult?”
“Oh no. Training is nothing anymore. It’s already been cut off.”
“Did it get cut?”
“Yes. I can’t be a messenger…”
“Well it’s okay. There are so many jobs in the world besides being a messenger. It’s weird to want to be a messenger. You’re always out in the open. Me you know. When I was little I wanted to eat candy so badly that I really wanted to be a candy factory worker. You know?”
“Ahaha. Is that so?”
“okay.”
Aldis said and looked into the campfire.
“We’re out of firewood. I’ll go get some kindling.”
She got up naked and picked up some kindling nearby. Meanwhile Azadin sat blankly inside the blanket she had prepared. Aldis who had rekindled the fire hugged Azadin and wrapped the blanket around him again.
“Aren’t you going to Ma Village?”
“How about we go here and look at the stars with Azadin today?”
“Stars? You mean the ones that shine in the night sky?”
“Yes. Oh I brought a book on the constellations of fairies today.”
“constellation?”
“This is a myth of the fairies that existed before the Yaegasu gods arrived on this land. They say they created a space by connecting the bright stars shining in the night sky and added their mythological stories. Hehe. Are you learning the fairy language these days? I’ll read it to you.”
Aldis opened the cookies he had bought as a gift and shared them with Azadin counting the stars in the early summer sky after the sun had set and telling them the legends of the fairies.
I can say for sure that until then Azadin had not known beauty. The night sky was just a vast void and the stars twinkling in it were too insignificant to pay attention to.
But ever since the day he counted the stars with Aldis Azadin knew what beauty was and the stars became a longing that pierced his heart.

Azadin who failed basic training received vocational training. As a member of the messenger clan if he could not become a messenger he had to become a servant a merchant or a worker in a trading house.
While basic training was in progress all human resources in the sanctuary were concentrated on the basic training course so Azadin who had fallen behind had some free time. Since Aldis happened to be there Azadin visited Aldis every day.
Aldis also spared no expense in giving Azadin his time who must have suffered while he was away.
“This book is so interesting. I came to return it.”
Azadin returned the initiation book of the Salvation Knights to Aldis.

“No Azadin you take that.”
“Yes? Is that okay?”
“So what part did you like so much about it?”
“Three virtues. If the knights of the rescue keep the virtues of courage wisdom and mercy they will receive power from the three archangels and be able to use white magic. White magic right? The power used by the Yaegasu God Kings?”
“Oh right. Hmm. Hehe.”
“I wish I could use magic.”
The reason young Azadin was fascinated by the Knights of Salvation was because of the Knights of Salvation’s claim that anyone regardless of bloodline could use white magic as long as they maintained virtue.
A disqualified person who cannot use magic. A loser. A traitor. A monster. A monster without eyes.
It was inevitable that this young boy a despised member of the world’s persecuted Herald Clan would be fascinated by the claims of the Knights of Salvation.
However Aldis who had traveled around as a messenger had never seen anyone in the Rescue Knights use white magic. No at least there were no people who used white magic with the power of the three virtues.
Those who used white magic in the Rescue Knights were only the last of the Yaegas clan who were of noble blood but had no inheritance rights like the King’s Church and were forced to become priests.
‘Um you mean the Rescue Knights. In my opinion they were just like swindlers. Well there were some good people but the priests there were all a bit…’
The Salvation Knights were the ones who boasted that they would protect humanity from the abyss of the world called the Nether. According to their claims beneath the continent of Hybris lies an even deeper abyss of the world called the Nether where indescribable evils exist.
Compared to the Nether the source of powerful black magic the Kurt Gods are nothing and the Yaegas Gods who defeated the Kurt Gods and saved humanity are also nothing.
Because of such claims they were once considered heretics and even a religious war broke out. However after the King’s Church became a dead end the status of the Knights Templar rose and they are now recognized as heretics…
‘White magic. It was used by upper-class knights but its authors were nobles.’
In the end only those who inherited the blood of the Yaegasu Shinjo used white magic. Or in the ‘Inland Sea Peninsula’ the headquarters of the Salvation Knights there are said to be many who can use white magic…
Aldis had never checked.
‘They say that the King’s Church has become a place to deal with illegitimate children and has become a mess but even so the King’s Church’s knights are far superior to the rescue knights in terms of human resources.’
But there was no need to talk about that now. Seeing Azadin who had been depressed becoming so lively Aldis wanted to comfort him somehow.
*********
“Do you want to be a member of the Rescue Knights?”
“Old rescuer? Yes. But I’m Aragasa… Will they like me?”
“hmm?”
“I heard that everyone hates Aragasa. Because we killed their precious god kings. But everyone else likes them. They say that they are afraid of us because we are strong enough to kill even the god kings. And they brag about it. But then what about me? I am weak and powerless as an Aragasa… And yet people hate me because I am also an Aragasa. No… before that.”
Azadin felt his own face. His face was filled with flesh where his eyes should be.
“It’s a problem from before Aragasa. This face! Everyone tells me to cover my face because it’s disgusting to look at. Last time the kids put a sack over my face and I almost suffocated to death.”
“Who did that? What kind of guy!”
There was a hint of anger in Aldis’ voice.
“Oh that’s a bit.”
Azadin knew from experience that interfering with children’s problems did not solve the problem but rather made it worse.
Aldis is a Jedaha clan member a messenger and a curator of magic studies. Her voice has great authority but she is too busy with her duties to be with Azadin. That means that even if Aldis protects Azadin she is not of much help when she is away.
Although he was glad that Aldis was here now Azadin became depressed again at the thought that she would eventually have to leave.
“Even the rescuers would hate me right?”
“Azadin.”
Aldis hugged Azadin tightly. The faint scent of lavender permeated Azadin’s nose.
“If you’ve read the book you know that the ideology of the Rescue Knights is that anyone can become a Rescue Knight if they have the courage wisdom and compassion.”
“yes.”
“If you have the courage wisdom and compassion you can be anything.”
“Even though I was born as an Aragasa I can’t even become a servant let alone a messenger?”
“Originally only a very small number of Aragasa become messengers. It’s only natural that most of them don’t even become servants. In the end what’s important is not how others see you but how you perceive yourself.”
“That kind of thing.”
Azadin frowned.
“That’s the problem. I hate myself right now.”
“Then Azadin do you hate me?”
“No way!”
Azadin waved his hands in shock as if he had heard blasphemy.
