Night of the Soulless Heathens – 471

#472. Northern Qi and the Overlord 7
As Azadin’s party came out through the underpass to the surface of Assander elves and northern Aragatha members were waiting for Azadin at the exit.
“Oh no Your Majesty. This is….”
Damil looked back at Zion and Azadin in confusion and said.
She was afraid that they might think that she had somehow informed them of Azadin’s arrival.
Above all she seems to fear being hated by her husband Sion Etar.
“It’s okay Madame Etard. There’s no way to contact them secretly and they had a great fight in the underground passage. If you were in charge of counterintelligence you would have naturally placed agents in the underground passage as well.”
Azadin looked at the elves guessing that they would have naturally discovered their intrusion even if Damil had not informed them.
“Nice to meet you Your Majesty Azadin. Welcome to Assander.”
“Thank you for the welcome. What about you?”
“This is Aguilera’s son Nemo.”
“Oh really?”
“So may I ask why His Majesty the King came in person?”
“To persuade.”
“…yes?”
“We are just conscientious merchants.”
“No conscientious merchant would welcome me here. I came here to persuade you but I have no intention of wasting your time with idle talk. You elves may be held accountable for burning ten thousand seok of food so stop talking nonsense.”
“Yes? Ten thousand seok?”
The elves were perplexed when they heard Azadin’s words.
When Azadin mentioned ten thousand seoks of food he meant that he knew that those who had raided the food warehouse were them.
But at this stage if you listen too closely to what Azadin is saying it would be no different from admitting that you are the culprit.
But what if I pretend not to know?
It seems like you have confidence but if you say ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about’ for the sake of acting realistically I think you’ll really be punished.
As Azadin glared at the elves his eyes glowed a strange purple radiating an unusual murderous aura.
“Watch your mouth from now on elves.”
“yes?!”

Even Azadin’s subjects were surprised by Azadin’s words.
‘Didn’t you say you came to persuade me?’
‘Why are you so angry?’
The reason became clear soon enough.
“You not only burned the food but also made the people of Zhongjing the capital of Chitai the sacrificial lambs of the Nether. At the very least you massacred the entire population of a city of over ten thousand households. If you are to be held accountable for this crime you must be given the same number of heads. However the one who directly sacrificed them was Sebalhan and this scheme was carried out by a few ringleaders. There must be others who did not participate and did not know what was going on so please bear with me. Do not test my patience any longer.”
“….”
Azadin was convinced that the elves had not only attacked the food storehouse but had also corrupted Sebalhan.
It’s really embarrassing for the elves.
‘Why on earth are you so sure?’
‘Aren’t you just passing it on? If there’s evidence….’
‘We didn’t leave any evidence. We’re not beginners.’
So Nemo spoke for everyone.
“What is your basis for saying that? This is truly embarrassing Your Majesty Azadin. If you have come as a guest I will treat you as such but if not….”
“You elves are arrogant. You look down on humans and think you can rule the entire continent. You have no doubt that you alone can rule this world with coolness and reason.”
“what….”
“Don’t tell me it’s not true. I was Kazas’ disciple. I’m not a total stranger to elves.”
“….”
“That’s what I’m saying. Since you guys pride yourself on being cool-headed I think it would be okay to kill all of the first envoys. Even if I kill you all here and now if I’m sure that it would be beneficial for the next envoys to negotiate with me I’ll gladly let your deaths flow into the river and pretend it never happened.”
“Now we….”
“Should I kill you?”
Zibek asked Azadin’s intentions.
“If you still don’t understand even after I say it like this I’ll kill you.”
It was a dazzling sight for the elves.
Azadin suddenly starts to lash out at them then becomes more and more murderous and threatens to kill them.
‘He only brought a handful of escort troops!’
‘Are you crazy!? What do you want from us?!’
‘…I know what you want though.’
The elves didn’t age carelessly either so from Azadin’s flow so far we could tell what Azadin wanted.
Azadin came to negotiate and persuade the elves seriously.
However the elves do not reveal that they were responsible for corrupting the Sebalhan across the continent and burning down Azadin’s food stores.
Although Azadin had no concrete evidence he was already convinced that the elves were responsible and he thought that negotiations with the elves would not even begin unless they confessed to it.
‘So you want us to confess without any evidence?’
‘But it really looks like he’s trying to kill me?!’
‘Should we fight? Wouldn’t it be much more useful to just capture that guy marinate him in medicine and turn him into a slave? Now that I’ve brought some subordinates it seems like a good opportunity.’
The tension between Azadin and the elves was clashing sharply.
As Azadin glared at the elves with the intent to kill them Damil Etar also stood by Sion Etar and prepared to help Azadin strike the elves.
It means that I will follow my husband…

But that was then.
“Stop!”
Another voice came from behind the elves.
To my surprise Master Agilea of the Telvarin Guild was walking down the stairs with her guards.
“Your Majesty Azaddin please stop being so angry. From our perspective our vagueness is not intended to deceive you but only to maintain our official position. I cannot give you legal proof of your suspicions but I can tell you that your suspicions are reasonable.”
Aguilera was saying that although Azadin admitted that his suspicions were true she could not see our testimony becoming evidence.
The elves were surprised by Aguilera’s reaction.
Although it may be a play on words Aguilera has admitted to the manipulation she has been doing.
‘My godmother….’
‘Do you really think we’re all going to die?’
The young elves were shocked to see their godmother Agilea give in to Azadin’s unreasonable threats.
“Hmm. Is that the best you can do?”
Azadin retracted his killing intent. From the elves’ perspective Agilea had made a great concession but from Azadin’s perspective those who had brought disaster to his kingdom and caused at least ten thousand seok of casualties if not more were simply too arrogant.
“Give me guidance.”
“Okay then I will guide you to the ground.”
“No that’s not it. Take me to your underground headquarters.”
“yes?”
“I heard that this is the old kingdom of the elves. The elves who hold their ancestors’ old kingdom sacred would naturally secure the palace of that old kingdom. They would make it their headquarters and plot a conspiracy against the entire continent of Hybris from there.”
“….”
The elves felt uncomfortable with Azadin who spoke confidently as if he had been observing their actions from the side.
however….
‘That’s true.’
What Azadin says is true. There is no way Azadin has any evidence or proof. It must be just guesswork but it all fits.
That made the elves angry.
“Take me there.”
Azadin left the elves to guide the way.
*********
After that Azadin entered the old elven city guided by the elves. He also checked the cysts connected to the mushroom clusters here and there.
It looks like a general has come out to inspect a field unit.
Azadin is a tyrant so he is indeed a high-ranking official but the elves here are merely merchants in name only. Those who have risen to official positions are also vassals of the Northern Qi.
However Azadin acted as if he had a lot to receive from the elves such as blood money and food and this irritated the elves.
The elves provided Azadin and his party with non-poisoned food and supplies as well as a place to rest and they also helped them communicate with Aragasa in the north. Then they all rushed to Agilea to ask her questions.
“I don’t understand Godmother.”
“What are you talking about?”
“That insolent brat is throwing a tantrum and yet your godmother is giving in to his tantrum and admitting our plan.”
For elves intrigue and deception is the fault of the one being fooled.
Their deception of Azadin and the damage they inflicted on his kingdom were not a result of their guilt over harming innocent people but rather a successful operation to attack the enemy effectively at a very low cost.
The Elves’ Emotions In their way things should have developed in a way that Azadin would find evidence or get back at them with another scheme but they barged in without any evidence and just said “It’s you guys right?” based on their own suspicions.
It’s like turning the tables on the spies but I don’t understand why Aguilera is struggling with such a barbarian.
“What do you think of the three people of Northern Aragasa? Those who use the Flower Bird Wind and Moon?”
Aguilera asked the elves.
“…is barbaric.”
“The Flower Bird Wind and Moon is scary. It’s a grimoire specialized in murder.”
“Perhaps because it was reconstructed in the Kazas style the northern Aragasa people who are half heralds were much more skilled.”
The flower bird wind and moon were passed down to the elves through Kazas.
The elves passed it on to the northern Aragats but the skills of the northern Aragats who received the training were much higher than those of the elves who passed it on.
However most of the elves in this city had a sense of what kind of grimoire the Flower Bird and Moon was through Kazas’s research… and they came to know its horrors well.
“If you met those three in this narrow dark underground passage would you be able to defeat them?”
“I won’t say it’s true though.”
“We will probably suffer significant damage as well.”
“Yes. King Azadin is at least as strong as the three of them. Especially in a narrow and dark place like this where you can extend your hand and stab someone’s neck he’s practically invincible. So let’s try to appease King Azadin and avoid any clashes we have now. What does it matter if your shallow pride is damaged? As long as we elves are the last ones standing that’s all that matters. Right now you’ve lost your reason because you’ve been provoked by King Azadin. Think calmly.”
“….”
“Even if it weren’t for us the northern Aragats would clash with King Azadin anyway. Just hold out until then.”
Godmother Aguilera convinced the young elves by mentioning the Northern Aragatha Triad.
