    #432. Season of War 6

It was a warm breezy night for the first time in a while.

Ismail turned his steps towards Sandokar’s soldiers who were sleeping as if dead.

Those who had suffered from the attacks of the witch Camilla were finally enjoying a comfortable rest.

But the price was completely paid by Azadin.

Ismail left his soldiers to rest and climbed up the steps of the wall and stood on the watchtower.

There was a chair in the watchtower and Azadin was sitting on it asleep.

He must have been exhausted from the forced march but he couldn’t sleep in his bed and was leaning against a chair in the watchtower with blood flowing from his nose.

Medium is gathering up a cloth and bandage to wipe away the blood flowing out of Azadin and stop the bleeding.

“I am worried that Your Majesty’s body will be too heavy to bear the light of the crown and the blessings of the angels.”

    “I know.”

    Medium answered calmly.

This time in order to drive away the nightmare that was engulfing the residents of Sandokar Azadin once again resorted to forcefully using the power of the Book of the New King.

He protected the sleep of the residents of Sandokar by cutting down his body which did not have much life left.

    “Is it alright? Your Majesty….”

Ismail looked at Azadin with mixed feelings.

It has already been proven that Azadin is the true God-King and a minister of miracles.

But even so the counterattack against the existing order is not easy.

The kings of other kingdoms and the king’s church were opposing the New Testament which was being promoted as a new doctrine by Azadin and even though humanity was united in power it was not enough and instead they were attacking Azadin.

The fact that Azadin’s bloodline was that of the Heralds also gave them a reason to attack.

Darkness is gradually engulfing the world but they hate Azadin’s origins and reject the new order and doctrine that Azadin advocates so they join hands with the darkness and attack him.

A normal person would have felt angry but Azadin didn’t seem particularly angry.

‘If you can say something like this you couldn’t have endured it when you were already a pariah within the messenger clan.’

Ismail felt complicated feelings toward him who simply said that and still insisted on his position and who was willing to sacrifice his own life for the people of Sandokar.

The man who stole the medium from her and the man who had such absurd thoughts from the first time she saw him that she could never accept him.

However Ismail felt a secret anger towards the other Hybris people as he watched him burn himself like a candle to give light for the other Hybris people who did not care whether they died or not.

‘I guess I like this person after all.’

Ismail shuddered as he realized that he liked Azadin.

I feel bad because I feel like I’ve been completely defeated.

But then I felt a warm feeling towards Azadin.

It is the voice of Arael a guardian spirit that protects Azadin that is waking Azadin up.

“Um… Ah Medium Ismail. Did I fall asleep?”

    Azadin opened his eyes.

    “your majesty.”

“The enemies are coming. Wake up soldiers.”

Azadin said this stood up from his seat and stretched.

“As expected you won’t let me get a good rest.”

“Still it’s fortunate that I can rest at least this much. I wouldn’t have been able to sleep like this before Your Majesty took care of me.”

The soldiers woke up to the sound of bells ringing here and there.

A large force of Bree troops surged toward the north gate of Sandokar Castle.

These were not the brown furred Brees we usually see but rather white furred Brees.

Humans are seen among the northern Brees which are much larger and more formidable than the southern Brees.

And at their head were the witches Camilla and Countach riding giant wolves.

“As expected of the great God-King Azadin. How could you break my curse so easily?”

Camilla came to the front and greeted us gracefully.

Then Indim immediately fired an arrow. The hidden arrow that the Aragasas often used hidden in the darkness of the night flew in a curve and fell aiming for Camilla’s head.

But Countach swung his club and knocked away the flying arrow.

    “This guy! My sister!”

    “Indim.”

    Azadin also stopped Indim.

“Hmm. No just saying hello. She’s a traitor anyway right?”

    “Shut up. Indim.”

    “….”

When Seraph also criticized Indim Indim kept his mouth shut.

“Camilla. Well you didn’t swear allegiance to me but I thought we were friends. Can you tell me why you’re acting this way? I think you deserve that much.”

“Haha. Of course Your Majesty Azadin.”

    Camilla smiled.

“…Why did you kill Count Evecheck?”

    “Because he is my father.”

    “what?”

Count Ivechek’s children were indignant when they heard this.

“Where did that dirty witch come from!?”

“You took my father’s life and tarnished his honor!”

    “No everyone calm down.”

Azadin stopped them and asked them.

“You claim that Count Evecheck killed your father but you were a member of the witches’ coven before you killed him right? Won’t you tell me the story?”

Shade Hags use their supernatural powers to hear the cries of women and their angry pleas but in return they take their souls as collateral and turn them into witches to serve as their minions.

As far as Azadin can remember Camilla was a witch from the beginning.

In other words the petition that she wanted to fulfill by selling her soul and becoming a witch was not the death of Count Evechek.

Countess Evecheck killed her simply because she had grown stronger as a witch not because she sold her soul.

“My mother was Galicia the maid of Count Ivechek. You wouldn’t pretend not to know that would you?”

    “….”

    “Where are you going Galicia?”

Count Ivechek’s children were more perplexed than angry as if they had something to hide.

“What a maid from a noble family giving birth to an illegitimate child is not even a topic of conversation. She is like livestock whose fate is determined by the noble’s will who will either become a concubine if she is lucky or be killed if she is unlucky? That is why I do not hold a grudge to that extent even if your mother falsely accused my mother of stealing a ring and beat her to death before throwing her out.”

    Camilla said with a smile.

“My mother who was beaten to death while pregnant was taken in by an orc wizard and gave birth to me and later my younger brother Countach. Then my stepfather died and we had no money no guardian and my younger brother was a half-orc… The door to suffering was wide open. Well I lived by stealing but I became a witch after killing a priest who tried to rape me.”

    “okay?”

“That’s why Your Majesty Azadin. I liked you. A messenger and a god-king! How could anyone have dealt such a big blow to the nobles and clergy who had been acting so high and mighty! Even when the Shade Hags whispered and sometimes forced me to betray you and kill you Azadin I held on and tried to be of help to you!”

“But why did you betray me?”

    Azadin asked her.

“The problem is that you are trying to recruit the existing nobility royalty and even the clergy. These guys are not worth keeping alive!”

    “…….”

“You accepted the new medicine for these dirty and deadly bastards and you just let them maintain their previous status?! Even after the chaos of Fimbulbert is over they will still live lavishly with the land and wealth they inherited as kings and nobles. So what difference will it make if you King Azadin add the new medicine to that?”

“Let me make an excuse for that Camilla. Things in this world don’t work out just by pointing my finger and telling people to do this or that. It takes a terrible amount of administrative power just to move soldiers. If you destroy the existing system you might feel relief in the short term but in the end the people will bear the brunt of the damage.”

The country that Azadin wants to create is not a country where the existing kings and nobles rule as they please but a country governed by law and parliament. Naturally it will require more administrative power than before.

To the educated class Azadin’s actions seem like reform but to those like Camilla who have moved around the lower classes they feel like nothing more than a collusion between the educated class and the aristocracy.

“I know you have your own circumstances. But I’m a witch who has already sold my soul to the Hags. There’s no turning back now.”

“Have you ever considered that those Hags are joining hands with the Northern Qi to persecute me?”

    “what?”

“We are currently under attack by the Cheetah Kingdom. The Northern Emperor the king and nobles you detest the top figure in the existing system is in a relationship with the Shade Hags and is manipulating you. Otherwise there is no way they could gather the Northern Breeds and attack you at this time. Where do you think those white-furred Breeds came from?”

    “….”

“To those who are suffering including Camilla it may seem like I am taking a halfway house. I admit it. But this is just the beginning. You can’t get full on the first sip right? We need to move forward in a better direction step by step after me and after that and with each successive generation. It seems too harsh to destroy everything just because you don’t like it right now. It’s like asking a child to pull a longbow that even adults find difficult.”

    “Pfft.”

The Medium who was listening burst into laughter. Who would have thought that the persecution the messengers had inflicted on Azadin would be brought up as an analogy at this time?

“I don’t care if the Shade Hags take your soul Camilla. Let me save you.”

“Keep on. You sound like a braggart. Is that possible?”

    “Of course.”

When Azadin said this Azadin’s vassals and even Midiam looked at Azadin in surprise.

The power of the Book of the New King that Azadin possesses is clearly a power that can create all kinds of miracles but it certainly comes at a price.

“You shouldn’t do that to save a witch like that. Please prioritize your health.”

    Ismail said that without thinking.

If Azadin were to save Camilla with his miraculous powers how much of a burden would it place on his body?

‘Shouldn’t you live one more day for the sake of Medium!? Why would you throw away your life for such a worthless witch!?’

When Ismail shouted with that in mind Camilla burst into laughter upon hearing him.

“Yes King Azadin. That won’t do. I’ve been feeding the villagers as I marched these Brees here. My hands are already stained with blood. And the children of Count Ivechek who are beside you are my half-brothers? They must be dying to kill me. What will happen to their hearts if you forgive me?”

    “….”

“So let’s fight. In this life you and I were destined to meet as enemies anyway.”

Camilla said and raised her hand. At her signal Bree’s army launched an offensive.
