Night of the Soulless Heathens – 431
by Jessie@AFNCC
#431. Season of War 5
The attack by the Order of Wisdom of the Knights of Salvation began on Fort Fireglyph.
The Minotaurs bring siege guns and shoot them.
The first shot hit the thickest and strongest wall.
But then the Minotaurs with their characteristically strong brute force lifted the siege guns and moved the batteries to the direction where the defense was weaker.
“If we just leave this alone we’re going to be in big trouble.”
Prince Kalintz who had been keeping an eye on the potential of the Minotaur hunters asked Zan and the northern Aragatha archers he had brought with him.
“Get those catchers out of the way.”
“Anyway our prince is a good person.”
The northern Aragats took up bows and shot arrows at the command of Prince Kalintz.
The enemy camp looked surprised as arrows flew at the Minotaurs.
I prepared siege guns at a distance that was impossible for a bow to reach but who would have thought that arrows would fly all the way there?
But the fallen Celestial Knights took up their swords and shields and blocked their attacks.
However as the Celestial Knights stood among the Minotaurs their wings and shields became a hindrance slowing down the siege fire.
“Okay then let’s hold out! Let’s buy time! Until reinforcements arrive!”
Prince Calintz began to stall for time by using the foundation walls of the Mercury Fortress.

The nomadic light cavalry of the Chitai Kingdom infiltrated the Naisandhokar region and began reconnaissance.
Naisandhokar was Azadin’s territory and Azadin made it a trade route linking the Chadra Plateau and a rear training base for refugee soldiers.
The refugees’ families children and elderly women helped out at the logging base as they pioneered Naisandokar and the new refugee soldiers trained by subduing the local beasts such as Bree Goblins.
However Chitai’s nomadic light cavalry now infiltrated Naisandhokar clashed with the new recruits who were in the midst of training and mercilessly killed them before fleeing.
The enraged field troops judging that their numbers and the rough terrain of the Naisandokhar region would make it difficult for cavalry to maneuver properly attempted to deal with the Chitai light cavalry on their own.
But the enemy was skilled. The Chitai light cavalry lured the refugees into the open areas of the mountainous and forested Naisandokhar region where cavalry fighting was relatively easy and then defeated them.
This happened even before the supply base for the expedition was fully built.
Naisandhokar’s soldiers were greatly shocked by this.
The reason Azadin’s army has been able to win every fight so far is because Azadin has effectively used a mix of elite and non-elite soldiers.

With only refugees and no combat experience they were no match for the experienced nomadic cavalry of the Chitai.
The commanders of Naisandhokar could only watch as the Chitai army restocked their supply bases and the nomads gathered to form a large army all they could do was prepare for the worst until reinforcements arrived.
But at the same time in the Sandokar region a large army of Bree arose and launched an attack.
Those who command the Breedles are witches of wild magic. Camilla a female thief who once joined the Azadin army is leading the attack on Sandokar together with her younger sister Countach.
From three directions different forces launched attacks on Azadin as if they had made a promise.

Azadin divided his forces leaving the Knights Templar’s Wisdom Order and some of the Arangian Guard the Arangian Kingdom Army and Lord Jecht in the areas adjacent to the Arangian Kingdom.
“Even if the enemy provokes you do not pursue them too deeply and only defend the Tyre River basin. I will head to Sandokar for now.”
“Isn’t Fireglyph dangerous? I think we should force our way through here now and hit the back of the enemy’s heads.”
Lord Jecht wanted Azadin to stay here and focus his energy on attacking the Wisdom Cult in one fell swoop rather than going to other places to save them.
But Azadin shook his head.
“That would be falling for the enemy’s trick. No matter how good the artillery is we cannot take Fort St. Mallory in one fell swoop. Even if we win here on the plains we will be tied down once we reach Fort St. Mallory and it will be too late to send reinforcements elsewhere.”
“But the one guarding the Fireglyph is Prince Calintz. Will he really….”
Lord Karna of Celestial Fire was suspicious. As one of the sons of the Northern Emperor he seemed to doubt Prince Kalintz’s abilities.
“Prince Calintz will show great ability in the battle of Mercury. And I have decided to send Lord Sok as reinforcements.”
“Are you talking about Sir Sok?”
“okay.”
Undead Orc Sok Sir.
Azadin was wary of this man who was trying to overcome the limitations of the orcs with death magic.
Lord Sok is kind to Azadin but Lord Sok is a being who does not even consider death a big deal and can kill any human out of kindness.
Sir Sok then asked Azadin for the Wendigo dagger.
Azadin had already obtained the Wendigo Dagger long ago but had ignored Lord Sok’s request saying he was busy.
But now it could not be ignored.
furthermore….
“Captain. I will be Lord Sok’s envoy. I will deliver the Wendigo dagger.”
Scott McGreen a commander for the Azadin Army volunteered to be the envoy.
“What? You can’t go to Scott by yourself.”
“I’m going to be rich.”
“….”
“I guess it’s a bit strange to waste food in this day and age.”
Scott was concerned about the unique constitution of the Orcs.
The Orcs whose muscles would grow just by breathing were always hungry and had to eat a lot of food to barely maintain their bodies.
In order to appease his hunger he rode in a palanquin pulled by the undead and even lay down in front of the king… but eventually he reached his limit.
“Without you the country will perish.”
Azadin said that half-jokingly half-seriously.
Azadin had acquired many talents by absorbing the Arangi Kingdom and Banreung Kingdom but while they were all struggling to run their own countries Scott McGreen was a true genius.
Because of Scott McGreen Azadin’s kingdom was able to quickly send troops to all corners of the world rotate soldiers between the front and rear and run the country without wasting supplies or starving anyone.

There were those who looked down on Scott and outright hated him because he was an orc necromancer and did not go to war but instead worked behind the scenes.
But Azadin knew very well how important Scott’s work was.
“It’s okay Captain. I’ve refined the work process a lot so it’ll run without me. I don’t want to have many military geniuses like me but if I create a system that requires military geniuses to run how can I call them geniuses? I’ve created a system that allows even mediocre people to run the country so even idiots who didn’t benefit from innate talent will be able to run the country without looking like idiots. And aren’t you worried about Lord Sok Captain? I’ll go into the Fimbul Horde and send you information.”
“It looks like you’ve really made up your mind.”
“Then why would you decide to become a Lich just for fun? In fact it’s been two months since I started preparing so I’m about to become a Lich. Then I can run through the night without getting tired and arrive at the Chadra Plateau in no time.”
“Okay take care of it Scott.”
“Haha. Then I hope the captain also achieves greatness.”
Scott left those words behind and died physically that night becoming Richie.
He fashioned an untiring death steed from the bones of dead horses and rode through the night sky to the Fimbul Horde.
*********
Azadin left the defense forces in the direction of Arangi and sent Scott to the Fimbul Horde to rescue Fireglyph while he himself headed to Sandokar with his best confidants Seraph Indim from the Herald Clan Midiam and Ismail.
Azadin’s party who had been forced to march while alternating between Kerim goats and Pabalma hippogriffs entered Sandokar with a small number of men.
Azadin appointed Lord Xibek as the commander of the follow-up force and urged them not to rush then entered Sandokar first with those who were quicker.
The condition of Sandokar was a mess. Soldiers were lying in the streets asleep and even King Azadin could not wake them up they were all as limp as wet cotton.
The corpses of Bree were piled up outside the gate as if they had been repeatedly attacked and the soldiers were unable to clear them away so the moat was filled with the corpses reeking of putrid smell.
Surprisingly only women were repairing the ruined walls. The men were all slumped over and unable to work properly.
“What is this?”
Azadin first announced his arrival.
Then the gate opened and the count came out.
“Oh my Your Majesty! You’re here! This is a big problem. I have nightmares every night!”
“What are you talking about? Does it have to do with the fact that the surname is like this?”
“Not only me but all the men of Sandokar have nightmares. That wicked witch Camilla attacked with her bridle at first but when we defended with the walls she didn’t have much fun and just piled up corpses. So we organized our own forces and prepared to support Naisandokar. However after a few days all the men suddenly started having nightmares.”
“What kind of nightmare is this?”
“That’s… a dream where I’m dragged out to the Hags’ festival.”
“The festival of the haegs?”
“Yes. Isn’t it that horrible hags drag people out and dance around the fire and as they dance the hags transform into peerless beauties?”
“…….”
“After having that embarrassing but exciting dream this beauty turns into a horrible witch hag. When I try to run away in panic the witches chase me and tear me alive. When I wake up from the dream I feel dirty… not scared… but terrified.”
So this dream was a nightmare and a trance. The men who were swept up in the Hags’ festival and suffered from a terrible dream of physical pleasure and mental fear became sleep-deprived.
“So because of the lack of sleep werewolves now infiltrate the city every night. So we made temporary identification cards and are monitoring them to prevent werewolves from entering the city in human form…”
When werewolves infiltrate humans the soldiers’ work becomes more difficult.
It’s hard work just to stop the invading enemies but you also have to discipline the humans inside.
Since werewolves can usually tear apart soldiers the group that controls the humans from within had to be made up of four pikemen and one elite soldier.
Normally watchmen move in groups of one or two but to deal with werewolves a group of five or fewer watchmen is needed so the work of the watchmen becomes extremely burdensome.
Overwork and lack of sleep create the perfect environment to kill a human being.
“Your Majesty. Please…..”
“Understood. With the power of the King I will save you from this nightmare.”
“Thank you!”
As Azadin had declared he blocked the evil wild magic with the power of the king and that day everyone was able to sleep peacefully without nightmares.
