Night of the Soulless Heathens – 423

#423. Southern King 4
Azadin sent an official letter to all the influential figures of the Kingdom of Arangi including the Noble Council the Arangian Guard and the Arangian clergy and guilds.
‘Gwain is entrusted with the important mission of the throne of Banreung and is fulfilling his duty by adding what little talent and courage he has. However as the adopted son of King Karnago IV he also has a great responsibility to the Kingdom of Arangi.
The sudden death of the great King Carnago IV is a great misfortune and in the current severe cold wave the hungry King of the Tooth’s army and monsters are ravaging the world and the suffering of the people is extremely heavy.
In such a situation a civil war over the throne of Aranggi would be a sin that would threaten the peace of the country and aggravate the suffering of the people and on a larger scale it would be a serious crime against all of humanity to shed unnecessary blood and waste energy.
It would be unwise to leave the throne of Aranggi vacant and leave all the kingdom’s subjects adrift and it would also be foolish to cause strife among powerful people to seize the throne.
In this spirit Gwain wants to form a council to ask the various sages of Aranggi for their wisdom.
I believe that if soldiers nobles merchants and artisans pool their wisdom and work together with one mind and one heart to promote the development of the country they will surely produce better results than working together alone.
I believe that by electing a true king through the hands of this council we can stabilize the people’s minds and deal with the chaos and this will continue the legacy of our predecessor King Carnago IV who adopted a disgraceful man as his son.’
Azadin took up the cause and proposed the formation of a parliament.
It was a proposal to form a parliament that would open seats to not only the Arangian Guard and military but also the clergy merchants industrial guilds and financiers based in the Arangian Kingdom.

The idea of parliamentary politics has been discussed among scholars for a very long time.
However under the theocratic political system of the Hybris continent which was comprised of god-kings who inherited the bloodline of the gods and their worship parliamentary politics was literally nothing more than an idealism or illusion.
When the war of succession broke out in the kingdom of Tarasar and the royal family’s finances were bankrupt there was a prince who promised parliamentary politics to the merchants who had been lending money to him.
However it could be said that it was Astarte who had the support of the Herald Clan who won the war for the throne of the Kingdom of Tarasar and that it was the Herald Clan behind Astarte who prevented the opportunity for parliamentary politics to be realized on the continent of Hybris.
However now that Azadin a member of the herald clan has taken the throne of Banling and become king he proposes parliamentary politics.
“Has this messenger clan gone mad? Who are you to do whatever you want with another country?”
Prince Balthazar was naturally furious.
It’s disgusting to see that soulless blasphemous untouchable Jeonryeong clan blabbering about as a king but how can he interfere in internal affairs and make such remarks?
The excuse may sound plausible but doesn’t it mean that they will judge and create a king themselves?
The problem is that the Noble Alliance and the Arangian Guard have nothing to lose.
They can’t become kings anyway. Azadin’s proposal was in line with their opinions as the purpose was to strengthen their voice in selecting the king.
“It’s true that he didn’t become the king of Banreung for nothing. He didn’t say he would become king but he came out like this. The adventurous scholars and intellectuals are already going crazy over it.”
Prince Balthazar’s advisor Ason was the son of the wet nurse and was like a sworn brother to the prince.
He highly appreciated Azadin’s plan.

“Oh they’re ridiculous. Scholars and intellectuals? Aren’t they just idiots and idiots? If that guy Azaddin really liked parliamentary politics he should have started with Banreung! Isn’t he suggesting parliamentary politics because it’s a country he can’t control right away?!”
“That’s right. That’s what I value. Normally you would just try to eat the entire Aranggi Kingdom but since you seem like you can’t you’re making excuses like this.”
“Ugh. He seems like a mean guy. Rumor has it that even Celestia Fire has pledged loyalty to him. He is certainly capable. He is also quite pitiful.”
Although he is born into the Herald Clan and is despised by all no one doubts Azadin’s abilities.
If Azadin is incompetent then the other royals who were left alone while he subdued Banryeong will become incompetent.
“What happened? The nobles and the Arangian guards must have been angry.”
“Since you’ve come this far would you like to meet the person from the Northern Emperor?”
“Heung you may be talking big like the Northern Emperor but what kind of talent do you have in this vast Hybris that you want to interfere with the southern Arangi Kingdom? What good will it do if you meet those guys?”
The King’s Church is pushing for the Northern Cohen Lioner but realistically it would take a month for a full-fledged army to go on an expedition from Asander to Arangi by Paval and even if they set off right now it would take half a year.
“The Northern Emperor’s strength does not lie solely in his military. We can also borrow his wisdom and strategies.”
“So is this something that can be solved with wisdom and strategy? And if that’s the case I have to solve it myself even if it means racking my brain. You don’t know how much trouble I’ll get in just because I borrowed some wisdom. If you lend me troops I won’t feel bad about giving you back anything. The Northern Qi side also has to spend money and time. But if you try to bargain with a ridiculous price with just a few words and a few strategies I’ll feel bad about it.”
Prince Balthazar’s remarks were somewhat petty for a prince. However they were also realistic.
I do not want to receive any help from outside powers no matter what kind of help the Northern Qi can give. It will not be of much help anyway.
“But that… you said it was wisdom but it’s not just wisdom. It will definitely be of great help. If it doesn’t help then why don’t you just pretend not to know? If we don’t do something right now then it’ll all go according to King Azadin’s will right?”
“Then let’s meet up. There’s no harm in hearing about it.”
Prince Balthazar decided to meet with someone from the Northern Qi side.
*********
“It is an honor to meet you Prince Balthazar. My name is Erasmaya of the Telbarin Guild.”
An elf belonging to the Telvarin Guild appeared as an envoy of the Northern Qi.
“The Telbarin Guild. Those slave traders?”
“It’s shameful that there is such a stigma attached to it…”
Erasmaya was embarrassed to see Balthazar openly showing contempt in front of her.
Yet Balthazar still asked in a rude and indifferent manner.
“So what do you propose?”
“I understand that King Azadin is currently feeling uneasy about his proposal to form a council. The throne of Aranggi was rightfully secured through the sacrifice of the prince who protected the northern border and how dare the likes of the Herald Clan try to decide who will take over the throne?”
“….”
Prince Balthazar listened to the elf’s remarks with displeasure.
“So are you saying that the Northern Qing Dynasty will provide military support or something?”
“But it’s not the Northern Qi army.”
“What are you talking about?”
“This is what it means.”
The elf merchant took something out of his bosom and showed it to Prince Balthazar.
“….”
“How is it?”
“It’s certainly not just lending wisdom. But is the Northern Emperor in his right mind? He’s the King of Kings. Even if he just stays the King’s Church will still be supporting him.”
Balthazar was perplexed by what Erasmaya showed him.
When he said he would lend him more than just wisdom Balthazar was skeptical.

But what this elf showed was certainly more than just wisdom.
The problem is that once you see this you only have two choices: fight them or go along with their plans. And if you fight them the results are much worse than not knowing at all.
It would have been better if I had never met them and just lived as a vassal…
“There is no choice here.”
Prince Balthazar decided to join hands with the Northern Qi.
*********
Contrary to Prince Balthazar’s concerns the nobles of the Kingdom of Arangi were showing a lukewarm reaction to Azadin’s proposal to form a council.
“Parliamentary politics. That is when the parliament enacts a law everyone must follow it. Isn’t this the written law system that the former Emperor Yaeslat envisioned?”
“Who would say that they are the messenger clan followers of the emperor?”
Under the feudal system the nobles wielded absolute power within their domains. They could kill the people and take away their property women and everything else without anyone saying anything.
However the parliamentary system is governed based on written law and ultimately has to give up the powers held by the feudal lords.
The rejection of Emperor Yaeslat’s rule and the execution of the emperor’s followers by the king’s church as heretics was due to the execution of nobles and royalty under written laws.
“But wouldn’t the Arangian guards be tempted by this?”
“And that’s King Azadin. He must have come with quite a large army.”
The nobles were not happy with the parliamentary system but they did not have the courage to raise their flag against Azadin.
Azadin is a man who has already defeated Karnago IV the former king of Arangi.
“So what is King Azadin doing now? Is he bringing an expeditionary force and feeding his soldiers?”
“No. They say they are dealing with monsters that appear on the southern coast.”
The southern coast of Arangi was currently infested with nether monsters coming from Netherstrom.
When the fog thickens and a blizzard blows in from the sea nightmare-like creatures appear from the fog and harm people.
The fishermen and residents of the fishing village did not dare to go out to sea and abandoned the sea to escape inland which made the sea turn into an even more terrible hell.
Azadin who had to maintain the maritime trade route could not sit idly by and watch this situation unfold so he led his troops and waged a punitive war by sweeping away the monsters that landed on the southern coast of Arangi.
And it was a tremendous show of force.
Not just any army but a unit capable of constant combat.
Even though their equipment looked shabby Azadin’s army showed training that was beyond their capabilities and displayed the power to defeat monsters that even regular troops would hesitate to fight. The nobles could not dare say a word even if they had ten mouths.
“Hmm. Then what….”
“What can I do?”
The noble alliance was quick to grasp the situation.
Even if parliamentary politics means that they can no longer wield the same omnipotent power as before it is more advantageous to side with Azadin than to resist him.
“Then we will send a letter to King Azadin approving the council’s proposal. I assume there is no objection?”
Marquis Gazen the head of the Nobles’ Association asked the opinions of the other nobles gathered at the Association. Since no one seemed to have any particular opinions he wrote a letter and was about to stamp it with his seal.
But then it happened.
“It’s a big deal! The Tooth King’s army is coming from the north. They say their numbers are at least 100000!”
The Demon God of the Kurt Clan the largest faction of the Kurt Clan served by the Tooth King Ogres and Goblins sent his large army to invade the Kingdom of Arangi.
