#4. The Demon of Gold 4

The soldiers were terrified to learn that the strange herald clan had no intention of letting them go unscathed.

    “Kwaaaaak!”

A shrill scream shook his eardrums. Only after the last soldier had lost his eyesight and been castrated did Azadin turn to the son of the Count.

“Whew you’ve waited long enough. You piece of trash who only adds to the suffering of the people.”

He literally took down twenty soldiers armed with metal armor all by himself. He didn’t just kill them he blinded and castrated them.

    “This kid!”

Prince Cozel was horrified by Azadin’s actions.

“I am a noble! I am different from other guys! Do you think I will be taken advantage of easily?”

At that moment there was a dazzling flash of light. Kozel had used magic to create an intense flash of light.

    “Eww!”

    “Your Majesty!”

The light was so dazzling that even the soldiers whose eyes were already damaged screamed. Even Lord Zibek who knew what Kozel’s magic was felt dizzy and couldn’t see. Even though he closed his eyes in advance and covered them with his hands the light still came through his hands and trampled on his eyes.

“See? This is my magic! It is proof of my noble lineage that is incomparable to yours!”

At that moment something flew with a rustling sound. Prince Kozel startled looked down at his lower body and saw that his trousers were soaked in blood.

    “Ahhhhhhh!”

Azadin’s sword had cut off Prince Kozel’s genitals between his groin.

“Hey you little brat! My… My….”

    “Oh excuse me.”

Azadin’s sword flashed again this time blowing off his nose and one of his eyes.

    “Ugh!”

As Prince Kozel floundered Azadin approached him picked him up and lifted him up.

“Eww. You little brat… What the hell did you do to me?”

“Is there something wrong with you? You don’t know? Is it some kind of disease that doesn’t let you feel pain?”

    “This kid.”

Prince Kozel shook off Azadin’s hand and stepped back shouting.

    “Hey just a minute!”

I still have one eye left. I must protect it. If I lose even this eye I will have to live the rest of my life in darkness.

“What do you want? Money? Women? Swords? I’ll give you anything. I’m a noble! I’m a descendant of the Yaegasu clan the new king!”

“Really? Coincidentally I’m a member of the God King Slayer Herald Clan. It’s okay. I’m not trying to kill you.”

As Azadin approached with a smile Prince Kozel looked around and looked at the still-alive Lord Jibek.

“Mr. Seo! What are you doing! Help me!”

    “…I can’t see.”

Just now Lord Jibek couldn’t see well because of the light that Prince Kozel had emitted. Of course he could see the outlines dimly now so he could fight if he wanted to but the image of Kozel mercilessly trampling on the suffering villagers lingered in his mind making his body heavy.

There’s no way you can fight and win against such a monster.

“You little brat I am a noble. I am of the blood of the new king! What did those commoners do to me?”

“Hmm you look so energetic I guess you’ll be able to live quite energetically even if you sustain physical damage. Alright that’s exactly the attitude. Live positively. You’ll need it especially.”

    “Kwaaaaak!”

In the end Prince Kozel lost his last eye.

    *********

The Herald Azadin didn’t kill anyone he just permanently damaged them.

Only after they had been castrated their eyes mutilated and their limbs cut off so that they could no longer use force against the people did they put away their swords.

“There are no petitioners but I think the sincerity has been shown to this extent. The Emperor’s law has been carried out.”

Azadin turned around declaring the Emperor’s Law that even those who inherited the blood of the God King should die if they committed a crime.

Behind him a rustling sound of a sword being drawn was heard. Sir Zibek had drawn his sword.

    “No matter how much you….”

    “huh?”

“No matter how right you may have been I am a knight of the King’s Church. I cannot tolerate you. Not to mention the Emperor’s law.”

    “Oh really.”

Azadin smiled bitterly at the stubborn Lord Jibek.

“What an old-fashioned knight. Not like the knights of the King’s Church these days.”

“Are you trying to insult me?”

“No I’m praising you. The other kings’ church knights were like scoundrels who were forced to become monks to settle inheritance rights.”

    “….”

The same was true of the Jibeks. Second sons or illegitimate sons who had no lands or titles to inherit. Bloodlines of humble families who were embarrassed to even claim to be the bloodline of the new king.

So he felt ashamed by Azadin’s remark. Above all he felt ashamed because the herald clan in front of him was more knightly than anyone else he had ever seen.

“But can you chase me wearing armor?”

    “What?!”

“I’m going. If we ever meet again let’s meet again Lord Jibek!”

After saying those words Azadin turned and started to run away. He was so fast that he had already disappeared into the darkness of the night.

    “Ugh?!”

Sir Zibek attempted to pursue him but his path was blocked by blinded and castrated soldiers and the body of Prince Kozel.

If you don’t intend to trample them down you should stop and not pursue Azadin.

    “This is really a relief.”

    Sir Jibek smiled involuntarily.

    *********

Count Kasel the Margrave of Salasma was lord of the border town of Salasma and its villages. There had been no rain in the vicinity of Salasma for a whole month recently and many had been flocking to him to petition him.

“My lord please exempt me from taxes this year.”

“Please. All the people have run away and become vagabonds and the streets are filled with people who have died and become undead.”

“Thieves and demons are rampant here so I don’t dare pay taxes.”

The village chiefs of each village came in person willingly traveling long distances to petition for tax exemption.

But Count Kazel just looked at them indifferently with eyes that seemed to be made of polished steel.

“You want to be exempted from paying taxes? You are shameless. If you keep doing this aren’t you going to end up asking for food aid?”

Count Kasel was just babbling but the village chiefs were still angry at his babbling.

“…I would appreciate it if you could do that.”

“I may be presumptuous but the situation is that dangerous.”

“Ah good. There’s nothing we can do about foolish people. What can we do about the common people being shameless and unprincipled? Their blood is lowly.”

Count Kasel smirked at them. They knew Count Kasel’s eccentric personality but they dared to ask for food relief. The people were in such danger.

“If you want relief I can give it to you.”

    “Are you sure about me?”

“But if you don’t do what I ask you will all be hanged for failing to pay your taxes faithfully.”

    “….”

“Don’t worry. All I want from you is a piece of paper.”

“Are you talking about Jo Jong-i?”

“Yes it is this kind of grimoire.”

Count Kazel said so and opened his hands. His hands were empty but a piece of paper appeared in his hands and began to spin around creating wind on its own.

The gathered petitioners were puzzled as they watched the paper move on its own like aquatic plants swaying in the current.

    “Ma the magic book…..”

“We are ignorant of magic and do not know such things.”

“No this is something you can find. If you truly wish for it you can definitely find it. If you can find a book of grimoires like this the village will be exempt from taxes for three years and will be given 50 bushels (1 bushel = 36 liters) of wheat barley and oats each.”

    “….”

Everyone was surprised to hear that he would give them grain even though he was exempt from taxes for three years. It was impossible for Count Kazel who was usually cruel to show such generosity.

That must mean the grimoire you’re looking for is important. But how do you find it?

“Excuse me but what is the name of this grimoire?”

“Huh? Do you think ignorant people like you would be able to figure it out just by looking at it?”

“That’s not true but wouldn’t it be better to know what it is so you can find and distinguish it?”

“A copy of the New King’s Book.”

    “yes?!”

Everyone was surprised to hear that.

    *********

There are eight thrones on the continent of Hybris.

This throne was brought from their homeland by the Yaegasu gods and when the rightful king sits on it it is said to drive away demons with the light of the royal fire purify the world with the power of white magic and grant sacred white magic powers to those who are loyal to the king.

Also the kings who sat on the throne had a powerful magic book imprinted on their minds which was the Shinwangjinseo the magic book of kings.

But you’re saying that there’s a copy of it and Count Casel is after it?

“If the people yearn for the Book of the New King when they are in dire straits even a copy of it will appear in response to the people’s call.”

    “….”

The village chiefs were shocked by the words of Count Kazel who spoke while looking at the distant mountains.

Count Kazel doesn’t care whether the people suffer or not. He only intends to take advantage of the misery and suffering of the people in order to obtain the magical book called the Shinwangjinseo.

“Oh I understand. Then I will immediately return to the village and look for a copy of the New King’s Book with the people.”

    “Yes. We too…”

    “I will do that.”

The village chiefs who had come to the village suffering from drought were either shocked by Count Kazel’s madness or really wanted to find a copy of the New King’s Book and be exempted from taxes so they bowed to the count and left.

As they left a huge snake slithered out from behind the curtains of the Count’s residence. The snake straightened up and transformed into a young beautiful woman with copper-colored skin.

“I think it is reckless of you to mention the name of the New King’s Book Count.”

“Nonsense. Aren’t you guys already searching for the grimoire diligently here and there? Anyway the rumor will soon spread throughout the continent. I just want to find one more page of this grimoire before then. So what’s going on witch?”

“I am ashamed to report… but it seems that one of your sons has been affected. Lord Kozel in the eastern hinterland….”

    “Kozel?”

    “yes.”

“If it’s Kozel’s forces they won’t be defeated so easily. Lord Jibek is also with them. Who are our opponents? Bandits? Demons?”

    “We are the messenger clan.”

    “Messenger Clan?”

    Count Casel frowned.

“They must be thirsty for the New King’s Book too. They need it if they want to lift the curse of service.”

“It was because of their actions that copies of the Shinwangjinseo were released to the world in the first place. From their perspective they must be trying to get their own copies of the Shinwangjinseo back.”

    “Is Kozel dead?”

“That… is said to have damaged the eyes and also damaged the reproductive ability.”

    “You were castrated?”

    Count Casel clicked his tongue.

“What would you like to do?”

“We need to spread our troops around Kozel’s land. We need to capture the messenger clan. Maybe they have some copies of the New King’s Book.”

“Okay then should I contact the commander?”

“No no. Let me give orders to the other guys. And…..”

    Count Casel smiled sinisterly.

“If one of my children is castrated I must create a new one.”
