Night of the Soulless Heathens – 373

#373. The King of Blasphemy 2
“Why? Because I’m full? Or is it? Because it’s not like you claim that some king or god or hero can save people but people themselves must cultivate their virtues and save themselves as a result?”
Zibek asked a rather pointed question. He knew that Azadin belonged to the so-called School of Discipline of the Knights of Salvation.
The Suyang School believes that instead of worshipping the blood of angels people should uphold virtue and each person should hone their martial arts and academic virtues to save themselves.
It was certainly a morally admirable belief but it was also a very weak belief to have in a world where gods and demons roam.
When will you ever build up your cultivation and save yourself when the Nether demons are tearing people apart right before your eyes?
“Oh my. Jebeck. It’s sharp. It’s scary.”
“I’m not in the mood for jokes Count Azadin. I respected you and I still do but you kicked away this great miracle and I can never forgive you. If I could stab you right now and take the miracle for you I would. Don’t laugh. What good did you do to make you laugh?”
“No this is more awkward than laughing. I don’t know what expression to make. If I don’t like laughing should I just cry?”
“That won’t do either. Just don’t make any facial expressions.”
“That’s a tall order.”
Azadin shook his head and put on his mask.
“Don’t use it!”
“What do you want me to do?!”
Azadin was bewildered by Zibek’s unreasonable demands to do neither this nor that.
“I don’t know my own mind. I feel the urge to cut you to pieces with a sword. So Sir Azadin are you saying that you rejected this miracle for the sake of the ideology of the Suyang School?”
“No it’s not that I specifically rejected you because I’m a Suyang sect. I’m asking why you’re Banreung.”
“What do you mean?”
“Even if you spread the light of the king’s flower in Banreung it will not be able to save the people.”
Azadin asserted so.
“yes?”
What on earth is this guy talking about? Zibek was now beginning to doubt whether Azadin was in his right mind.
If you had rejected me because I was a Suyang sect I would have understood even if I hated you but I don’t understand what you are saying now.
Azadin scratched his head and began to explain.
“So even if we spread the light of the king’s flower in Banreung and farm there this place is a barren land. It’s a place where we usually import food. Even if people flock here to escape the winter we can’t save many people.”
Even if it were Chadra the barren Banreung throne would not be able to protect the people flocking to it.

“The spirits of Yaegas called it a selection and a lesson. They knew full well that the King’s Church and the Yaegas royal family had become corrupt so they wanted to punish them appropriately and leave a lesson that would forever shackle the survivors and then make a new promise.”
“You said you were against it. Hmm.”
Jibek tilted his head.
“Why did you object?”
“I told the spirits of Yaegas. No matter how much you beat them and teach them a lesson people will naturally forget. Even though the three archangels sacrificed themselves for humanity they did not last long for many generations and even though the spirits of Yaegas borrowed human flesh to leave their incarnations they eventually fell into corruption. The intervention of the gods only turns this Hybris into an arena for various gods. Even if the Kurt Pantheon occasionally visits and beats them and throws miracles at them when the Nether’s heteromorphic gods who do not even have a pantheon are continuously targeting them how can people change?”
“….”
“I want to combine and integrate the Knights Templar’s School of Cultivation and the Yaegas faith. I want to develop humans as beings who save themselves and cooperate with the spirits and angels. Not simply beings who worship God but beings with a separate personality and ego who help even the gods and angels when they have limitations. That was the truth and salvation that the three archangels had already told humans long ago and I want to put it into practice. If the Yaegas spirits agree to this I want to make it a new promise of the King’s Church and a doctrine of the New Testament.”
Azadin spoke of his long-held wish. Surprisingly in this respect Azadin resembled Bukje.
The unification of the faith of the Knights Templar and the Church of the King.
The desire to unite human will and gather the power of humanity against the ever-increasing hordes of evil spirits was in fact natural.
Even if you are not a king or a great noble this is the conclusion that anyone who ponders the history and future of this world will eventually reach.
However Azadin is willing to reject even the glory that is given to him right now in order to achieve his goal while Bukje Cohen Lionaire seeks to take the results into his own hands no matter what the means.
Because of these differences Zibek supported Azadin but…
‘I wish I had sided with the Northern Qi.’
It makes me angry to think that I said such nonsense at the glorious event of welcoming the spirits of Yaegasu.
“So you broke the throne and rose up? If I may put it nicely that may be true but if I may put it badly you are ultimately a believer in the Knights of Salvation a believer in the Suyang School and so you rejected the obvious miracle and destroyed the throne. It is a terrible heretical act.”
“I told you it wasn’t me who broke it. To be exact it was the spirits of Yaegasu who broke it.”
“why?”
“The will of the spirits of Yaegas was divided. Some agreed with me and some denied my will. Those who agreed with my will gave me the power of this blessing while handing over the Shinwangjinseo to unfold their will while those who denied my will hated that I had the proof of miracles and signs and that in the end I would solve everything with the authority of the Yaegas faith. Now that I have the sign of the Holy King chosen by the spirits of Yaegas and even the throne is intact wouldn’t the people of the King’s Church submit to me no matter what nonsense I say? So they destroyed the throne.”
“…Are you the Holy King?”
“I’m embarrassed to say this but it would be a lie if I said no here.”
As Azadin pointed towards his own head the sacred halo appeared again.
“…ha.”
Zibek covered his face with his hands.
“Why is it so difficult to go through something that could have been easy? If you were worried about dying through the medium of the light of the king you should have come to an agreement on that point and done something about it. Instead of destroying the throne and coming up with a new doctrine and declaring that this is the New Testament? Are you crazy? Look at that Edir. Even the person who witnessed it right before his eyes is in such chaos….”
“But it will be fun and rewarding Zibek. I need your help as a member of the King’s Church. For me.”
“…Don’t laugh. What did you do so well that you’re laughing at me? I want to hit you!”
Zibek looked genuinely annoyed as he looked at the smiling Azadin.

After convincing Jibek who was barely able to control his anger Edir left the fortress in the heart of the mountain leaving him tied up.
The place where Azadin’s party came out was not the coast where the Celestial Fire Knights had invaded but an old abandoned mine towards the Kerim Mountains to the north.
“Um… Normally Bishop Akenar would be here.”
Bernard used blood magic to imprint Bishop Akenar. It was a simple spell that would allow him to know her location when he got close but somehow Bishop Akenar is nowhere to be seen.
“Isn’t that it over there?”
Niselda pointed to the broken pillars of the abandoned mine.
Bishop Acenar’s robe hung on a broken pillar with ashes scattered around it.
Could it be that the light of the royal fire that appeared when Azadin sat on the throne burned her a vampire?

“Oh my god.”
Azadin approached and examined her clothes.
Around the clothes and ashes was a letter written in what was clearly Bishop Acenar’s handwriting.
Azadin picked up the letter and read it.
*********
Born as the princess of Bishop Akenar Chitai Ha-wol was an innocent girl.
I read fairy tales and romance novels and longed for the love that would come.
However she had to live a life like a nun and even after reaching puberty she had no opportunity to meet adult men other than her father and the eunuchs of the palace.
When she first appeared on the social stage Prince Sram who visited as an envoy of Arangi could not help but be amazed by her beautiful appearance and reported the fact to his country.
Prince Sram begged his father to allow Princess Ha-yul to become his wife but King Karnago IV of Arangi indicated to the Kingdom of Chitai that he would like to take Princess Ha-yul as his wife.
The fate of a young girl in her mid-teens was decided by a few letters.
But this was relatively good.
The royal family which inherited the blood of the gods lived longer than others and their youthful appearance for many years produced a strong sexual desire and many descendants.
Some kings favor their children but most do not. That is why the princes of Yaegasu had to escape their fate and become adventurers or Sellswords or join the church and become knights.
And it was the same with the princesses.
Either fight and seize your destiny or become someone’s possession and be consumed.
Princess Ha-yul of Chitai was too young and naive to know that fact.
*********
Ha-wol didn’t know why people pitied him.
Marrying a king who lived ten times longer than her and becoming his queen would certainly be an object of pity but contrary to her actual age the king of Aranggi was an ambitious and handsome young man.
Unlike ordinary humans who age quickly tan from the sun and suffer from parasites and diseases even at the age of 30 this beautiful being with the blood of a god maintains the appearance of a youth even after he is over 100. A king of noble blood who holds wealth and power in his hands.
He was an attractive enough spouse for a girl who was ignorant of the ways of the world.
A girl in her teens could not even imagine what color the soul of someone who had lived in power for 100 years would be.
And the price for that ignorance was very dear to her: her body and her life.
*********
“Are you telling me to become a member of the Rescue Knights right now?”
Princess Ha-wol the queen of Aranggi was astonished when she saw the silver mask in front of her.
“So that the king can marry a new woman?”
“It is necessary to form an alliance with Assander. I must marry the daughter of the Northern Emperor Cohen Lionaire and she is not a mere concubine but a legitimate queen. Blame the rules my ancestors. The tedious rules that only allow one queen.”
“….”
“Considering our previous friendship I will give you the position of bishop of the Knights Templar instead of a convent. It would be better for you to enjoy your life within the diocese.”
Princess Ha-wol was taken aback by the king’s shallow remarks recommending that she abandon him and enjoy her decadence.
I knew that the king was living with other concubines and lovers.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel anger and jealousy but that’s what we’ve all been feeling so far.
As her father the King of Chitai was also like that Princess Ha-yul silently faithfully carried out her original duties as queen.
But is this the result?
