Night of the Soulless Heathens – 36

#36. Black Magic Disaster 7
Even though the distance is far the power is extraordinary.
‘You don’t really intend to hide the fact that you’re a member of the Herald Clan do you?’
‘But doesn’t it seem like Azadin uses a stronger Moonbow than the other messengers?’
Midiam and Ismail clicked their tongues as they watched Azadin’s performance.
‘The messenger obviously learns about… tactics strategy and various judicial cases. But most of them just skim through it superficially and they say it’s lacking if you don’t gain practical experience.’
So after completing basic training you learn on the job while performing your duties with the messenger.
‘But Azadin became a messenger without any experience and only worked for 3 months. So what is this skill? He failed even in basic training so how did Elder Kazas train him?’
Medium became curious about what kind of training Azadin had undergone.
*********
“uh?”
Maya was startled by the tremendous power of the arrow shot by Azadin. Azadin reloaded the arrow and fired another shot.
-Pfft!
This time the undead falls with a loud sound. The undead that was hit by the arrow rolls along the ground just like a pile of garbage swept by a strong wind.
[What the heck?]
The sorcerer was astonished as he watched this situation.
“The strong take it all? Let me show you who is strong.”
[Don’t make me laugh Archer! You’re just shooting a few arrows and showing off! How about this?]
Then the undead started going crazy.
“Grrr!”
“Kaaaah!”
The undead rushed at a frightening speed. It was a terrifying sight for anyone to see. But Azadin was not afraid.
“So what if I do that!”
Azadin deployed the Aragatha spell to maximize the power of the arrows and fired them repeatedly.
-ping!
Arrows flew with the sound of the wind cutting through the air and undeads rushed in with each attack rolling around on the ground. In addition the undeads that fell soon became obstacles for the others coming from behind lengthening the enemy ranks.

As a result there were not many undeads that reached the front line including Meiya and Tarki. Even if the fallen undeads rose again the number of troops deployed at once was reduced so the people in the front line would be able to deal with them sufficiently.
“Wow. It really looks that good.”
Tarki holding a longsword takes the lead while Kaka and Chico holding short spears stand slightly diagonally to support him from behind.
When Tarki swings his longsword in a cool manner Kaka and Chico located at the rear provide support with their spears to fill the gap created by the swing.
However the undead that approach through the barrier are intercepted and killed by the paladin Meiya armed with a shortsword and shield that Azadin took out from his pack.
By fighting in this systematic formation we were able to subdue the undead quite easily. In addition…
-Shhh!
-puck!
In addition to the arrows shot by Azadin arrows of considerable power attack the undead. Midiam who was using a hunting bow could not hold back and drew his moonbow and shot it.
“hey.”
“As long as I don’t get caught by that knight that’s fine.”
It seemed that the Paladin Maya was too busy fighting. Of course she wouldn’t have time to look back.
Taking advantage of the gap both Midiam and Ismail secretly switched their bows to the Moonlight Bow and fired arrows.
“Okay. When I tell you quickly change your bow.”
Azadin allowed Midiam and Ismail to use the Moonbow and he himself fired arrows.
*********
As Azadin and Midiam Ismail began to shoot arrows the undead began to falter.
The undead that barely managed to reach Tarki’s party by avoiding the arrow rain were already so wounded that they would collapse without being able to maintain their form even if they were lightly touched with a melee weapon. However as the corpses of the undead piled up Tarki’s party had no choice but to continue to be pushed back.
[These kids….]
The drinker was confused.
I didn’t take them seriously because they were a group of children but they were much better at defending themselves than merchants and mercenaries.
Besides this defensive formation is tricky.
Even if you try to ignore obstacles like light wooden benches zombies have poor mobility and will trip and fall over benches that are only knee-high.
In the end infantry forces alone will inevitably be exposed to a hail of arrows. However if you deploy wyverns the flying wyverns are easy to possess so losing them here would be regrettable. In chess terms it would be like losing the queen’s tile early on.
‘You’re wasting your time. You should have just deployed all the Wyverns from the beginning.’
Eventually the drinker decided to put his cards through his paces.
*********
-Krrrrrr.
A bear appeared.
They are not zombies they just have black spores stuck to their bodies. They are much more dynamic and move faster than zombies.
It is a living being with no movement that is different from when it was alive.
and….
-burdock?!
The wyverns also began to move. On the ground they began to launch three-dimensional attacks using the wyverns in the sky above the bears.
“Wow!”
As the bear charged the battle line was instantly turned into a mess. Tarki who had been able to hold his own against humanoid zombies until now had no choice but to hesitate when the bear charged.
Moreover Azadin’s arrows which showed off their fiery power against other zombies did not have much effect on the bear.

-puck!
The arrow was almost completely lodged in the body just like a javelin leaving only the tail feathers visible. If this were a normal living bear it would have died of shock from the extreme pain it endured.
But the bear doesn’t care at all and charges at him with arrows almost embedded in his body. Even though the arrows embedded in his body tear his muscles and open his wounds he doesn’t flinch.
“Eek!”
Tarki jumped sideways with his shield and sword in hand trying to avoid the bear’s charge but the creature swung its paw. When the shield caught in its paw Tarki was sent flying like a toy.
Tarki flew like a herdsman riding on the back of a rampaging bull and crashed to the ground.
“Whoa!”
“Ugh!”
Kaka and Chico followed suit but they too met the same fate as Tarki. Their spears were caught in the bear’s charge broke and rolled across the ground.
“uh!?”
Chief Inspector Maya cast a spell in confusion.
-A blow from heaven!
A hammer of light appeared in front of her struck the bear and exploded. With a loud noise the bear’s forelegs finally broke. The shoulder and torso where Azadin’s arrows had struck were torn apart and the bear tumbled forward.
Among the knights of the King’s Church she was a powerful enough person to become the chief priest of a carefully selected diocese… but the problem was that she was too close to the epicenter.
“Whoa!”
Maya was engulfed in the explosion of the divine spell she had cast.
‘Are you stupid!?’
When she was locked in the warehouse she said that if she used her magic she could break the door but she would also get caught up in it. Now I think I know why. That paladin must only be able to use that one magic.
Still thanks to that I was able to take down the bear.
[Damn. As expected it’s pretty good! But….]
Behind the bear’s charge undead made from the corpses of other forest beasts rush in.
[There are still many of my undead left! And!]
Taking advantage of the bear’s charge the wyverns flew into the sky and landed on the warehouse roof.
[Ahaha. How is it! You people of Hybris! This is the power of the Herald Clan that you hate! How does it feel to be avenged by someone you mocked and despised?]
She was grumbling. But then.
“I’m sorry but you don’t know the power of your clan at all.”
[what?]
“If it’s the power of the clan… it’s like this.”
At that moment the wyverns screamed and fell down all at once.
*********
The wyverns raised their sharp stinging tails high into the air then swung them down punching holes in the warehouse roofs and thrusting their stingers inside.
Azadin and Midiam Ismail were shooting arrows outwards from the eaves of the warehouse or inside the warehouse when the wyverns began swinging their poisoned tails inside targeting them.
However Azadin pierced the roof of the warehouse and fired arrows into the stomachs of the wyverns.
It was such a strong bow that when shot at a bear it almost went all the way to the tip of the arrow. When fired at such a close range it was only natural that it would pierce the torso of the wyverns and rip out their internal organs.
[What the heck….]
The power and accuracy of arrows that can tear apart wyverns beyond the rooftops without even looking.
Azadin who had killed the wyverns in an instant ran out of the warehouse.
“Look carefully.”
Azadin drew his bow and shot at the flying wyvern.
“Our bows will knock down the stars from the sky…”
The arrow that hit the wyvern’s wing broke through the bone and went on.
A wyvern subadult the size of a giant calf screams and falls over.
“Don’t hit the first arrow with the second arrow!”
Azadin unfolded his double bow.
Two arrows hit a wyvern at the same time cutting off both of its wings.
“By the order of the Emperor we even subjugate the new king. This is our Aragasa people. The messenger clan is what others call us. If you are one of our clans then it is right to call you Aragasa.”
Azadin said and shrugged his shoulders.
[Then you….]
“My name is Azadin. I am the Emperor’s Herald 108th.”
[You are a messenger? A messenger of the Emperor?]
“Yes.”
[Ha… hahahaha.]
The dying wyvern possessed the sorcerer who burst into laughter.
*********
Midiam had told Azadin that if he could convince the sorcerer who was suffering as a slave because he was a herald he would respect him.
But the reason I set such a condition was because I thought it was virtually impossible to persuade. Once someone touches dark magic they never return to their original state.
Those who come into contact with the black magic that deals with the power of death will always smell death and will always be conscious of death even if they don’t want to.
Unlike most living beings who only think about life when they live the power of black magic makes humans gloomy and makes them always see and be aware of the boundary between life and death.
Leaving it aside how can we suppress and persuade the resentment and bitterness of those who were abused as slaves?
But Azadin felt a tiny bit of hope.
That’s pride.
The one who was abused because he was a herald took revenge on the people of Hybris and mentioned the power of the herald. When someone is distinguished even if you don’t like it that identity cannot help but become stronger.
Since they are discriminated against by others because they are members of the Herald Clan they cannot help but focus on the strengths of the Herald Clan. They use that to protect themselves.
In that case… Azadin had to show the proud messenger clan the appearance of a proud messenger clan in order to persuade that sorcerer.
But is it possible?
The Herald Clan has long since lost its pride. Azadin is despised even among the Herald Clan. He is nothing more than a despised being who cannot have pride.
Above all the problem is the mind of that sorcerer.
How can we convince a soul that is so tormented and twisted?
