    #35. Black Magic Disaster 6

Midiam is a member of the Etar clan a noble family in Aragatha and does not have good feelings towards the people of Hybris. However she sympathizes with Azadin’s words.

Protecting the people is a beautiful thing. Even if they are the people who are hostile to Aragasa protecting the helpless is the epitome of a warrior noble. Even if you are not a warrior noble…

As a human being that’s right.

‘No one has ever taught me that before.’

Since no one spoke of the virtues or aesthetics beyond Aragasa’s position in fact Medium already had some respect for Azadin.

What if Azadin had the eloquence and the means to embellish that philosophy?

Respect will grow more and more.

    “Stop it miss.”

    Ismail grumbled.

“There is no need to forcefully spare and forgive such a person. He must be killed. We don’t know what will happen if we spare the person who caused the black magic disaster. And respect….”

Ismail was going crazy with jealousy.

    Respect to the medium?

Midiam showed no interest in anyone of her age or in anyone of her age. I don’t know why she is so interested in this blind traitorous bloodline the cursed Azadin and why Azadin finds Midiam so annoying.

Ismail would sell his soul if he could just get that much attention from her!

“It doesn’t matter whether you respect me or not. I just do what I can.”

“So you’re going to keep our identity a secret? Are you going to stop shooting arrows? Are you going to let us be burdens like the helpless children of Hybris?”

    “That’s not it.”

Azadin pulled something out of the storage room.

    “Let’s use this.”

The thing that Azadin took out was a hunting bow used by the villagers. Compared to the Moon-Gak-Gung the bow of the Herald Clan it was a weaker weapon so it would not be strange for a 13-year-old boy or girl to wield it.

    “Um this?”

    “Okay let’s get ready.”

    “What are you talking about?”

“Of course it’s a defensive battle. It would be foolish for us to go into the forest or swamp so let’s lure the enemy here.”

Azadin said so and prepared to light a fire.

“We’ll need a lot of arrows. The arrows that the people of this village used and the ones we have now might not be enough. Then for the first time in a while should we put some wax on our bows and make some arrows?”

“Ugh. I don’t want to make arrows.”

    The medium was annoying.

“Hmm but isn’t it time to wax your Moon Palace? If you don’t take care of it regularly the bow will burst.”

The bow of the Herald Clan is smaller than other bows but is powerful. However it is difficult to manage and maintain. If you do not wax it at least once a week the bow itself will dry out and break as if it were exploding.

Azadin lit a fire sat down and took out his supplies. Materials for making arrows. Thread and feathers. He brought the wood he had procured from the sawmill and began to trim it.

They split trees with an axe sharp enough to shave them make arrow shafts and then roast the shafts in a fire to dry out any remaining moisture and sap.

    “Get ready.”

    “yes.”

The servant Ismail combs the hair of the Kerim goat they brought with him with an oil comb in order to collect the sebum wax esters present in the goat’s hair.

When the collected material is shaken on an iron plate fleas lice and dust fall off along with it. Azadin rolls a piece of fire-scorched wood over it bursting and killing the fleas and lice. He then evenly applies the wax ester to the arrow shaft and fires it again to refine it. This is how he makes an arrow shaft.

    “next.”

Azadin handed the finished arrow shaft to Midiam. Midiam began to thin the tip of the shaft attach feathers to it wind thread around it tighten it and attach a sling made of animal or fish bone.

“Don’t waste water. Finish it with thread. Save it.”

    “But then the arrow….”

“Anyway if we make arrow shafts out of raw wood they will dry out and warp after a long time. We will also use iron tips. We will use them all in this defensive battle. Since we will shoot all the arrows before they dry out and warp it is sufficient if the quality is slightly better than that of goblin arrows.”

Iron coins are iron coins used as currency. Among the hard currency of the eight kingdoms iron coins were made of molten iron and were made into leaf coins that could be used as arrows.

They say it was made to be used as an arrow in times of war or emergency but from the perspective of those who actually use arrows it was just an absurd theory.

The iron used for money is a mixed iron with many impurities. The arrowheads made by roughly imitating the shape of the arrowheads have poor penetrability. They are sufficient for harming unarmored opponents but they will be useless against those wearing armor because the arrowheads will break.

In addition many of the arrowheads were worn and bent during distribution so strong and good ones had to be selected to be used as arrowheads.

“The goats have all combed their hair.”

Ismail finished collecting the required amount of wax ester and quickly approached Medium.

“Then you too put on an arrowhead.”

Azadin had Ismail put on arrowheads. All three were skilled in making arrows as befitting a herald clan famous for their archery and in no time they made enough arrows to fill everyone’s tradition.

After Azadin finished making the arrows he fed the remaining wax ester to the moon bow.

    “Okay. Okay then.”

Azadin mounted the halberd head on the hewn wood. He mounted the captain’s halberd head put on the water cap applied the remaining wax and slowly baked it over a fire so that the wax was evenly distributed.

    *********

While Azadin and Ismail Midiam made arrows and repaired bows the rest of the group gathered wooden furniture from the village and strengthened the walls. It was impossible to guard the entire fence of the sawmill village so they set up a defensive line with houses and warehouses and moved obstacles to prevent enemies from easily entering through the windows.

“You don’t seem to be just a pilgrim.”

Kaka was impressed as he pulled out and placed the furniture according to the defensive plan that Azadin had set up. He laid out the furniture and piles of trash so that no matter which direction the enemy came from in the village he could make the most of the existing buildings such as houses and warehouses.

“What on earth does that person do? Is he a person who committed a great sin in the past and is on a pilgrimage?”

    “I don’t know either.”

Tarki had no choice but to answer like that for he could not be said to be the Emperor’s messenger.

“I’m sorry. I’m supposed to be the one leading.”

Maya the chief officer of Salasma felt ashamed that she as a knight was not able to properly command.

Then I felt movement in the forest.

    -burdock?

It was the sound of a wyvern. And merchants appeared through the fog at the southern entrance to the sawmill.

    “Grrrrr.”

    “Creamy.”

The merchants and their guards had already become undead. They had been attacked by monsters and slaughtered while traveling down the road south of the sawmill and had emerged as undead.

    *********

    “That’s fast.”

Azadin clicked his tongue at the fact that the merchant group had been annihilated much sooner than expected. Even if the merchants were like that the mercenaries and adventurers who had been with them were not easy people.

“Okay then everyone get into battle formation!”

Azadin gave the spears to Tarki Kaka Chiko and the knight Meiya and placed them in front of him. He himself stood inside the warehouse building holding a bow.

Undead made from the corpses of merchants and adventurers enter the village entrance barrier. A woman’s voice is suddenly heard from the sky.

[Hahaha. You guys are quite funny aren’t you?]

Surprisingly the wyvern was speaking as if it was a young woman. Perhaps the sorcerer who created this situation was using the wyvern’s body to convey his voice.

‘If you can control undead or other creatures anyway it would be easier to control something that can fly like a wyvern. It provides a clear view and is easy to move around.’

Azadin knew from the beginning that the wyvern was the possessed being of that woman. He spoke to the possessed being when it was nearby.

“Are you the messenger clan that annihilated this village?”

When Azadin asked his voice sounded puzzled.

[What? How did you know that?]

    “The merchants said.”

[Yes. Those bastards made me a slave and trampled everything I had! Just because I inherited the blood of the Herald Clan! They treated me like a soulless stone!]

    “Are you alive?”

    [Of course I’m alive!]

Even so most ghosts also claimed to be alive so it was hard to take them at face value.

“How did you get the strength?”

[Why should I tell you that? If you want to know become an undead under my command. Then you will know even if you don’t want to!]

“Are we going to be hostile to those who abused you even though we have nothing to do with them?”

[Shut up! If you are the only ones with souls and I am just a soulless roadside stone then I will make it my mission to crush your souls! You great Wybrisians! I will dye your souls with pain!]

It seems that this sorcerer was planning to vent his discontent about being treated as a slave and abused because he was a member of the Herald Clan on the entire Hybris people. As a fellow Herald Clan member Azadin felt very wronged.

When the situation became like this Medium whispered to Azadin.

“If we reveal that we are a herald clan wouldn’t we be able to convince them?”

    “Then what about that knight?”

“I guess I have to kill him.”

“If I kill the paladin what will happen to those half-brothers of Tarki?”

“They can’t do anything about it right?”

    “Oh Midiam.”

    Azadin sighed.

“You shouldn’t take human life so lightly. Even if you’re a knight of the King’s Church.”

“Oh my God. Are you serious about that?”

Ismail who was listening was shocked.

    “Then what is the solution?”

“What you’re saying that the strong take everything…”

    Azadin shrugged.

“I have to let them know who is strong.”

The corpses of adventurers and merchants approach the warehouse from the entrance of the sawmill village. Azadin picked up an arrow and nocked it on his bow.

“Isn’t it too far? I should pull it in a little more and then shoot…”

Maya suggested that they draw in more enemies before shooting but Azadin answered.

“I want to but there are too many. For us space is a barrier. If we take up space the barrier shrinks.”

That means shoot from a distance to secure as much space as possible. Azadin said and fired an arrow.

    -Wedge!

The arrow flew with a loud noise that tore the wind.

    -Throw!

The arrow struck the adventurer’s head breaking his jawbone and hitting the inside of his helmet blowing it away. The terrifying sound was a bonus.
