Night of the Soulless Heathens – 318

#318. Herald of Famine 2
In the course of a war scorched earth operations are a common occurrence.
Burning the rations and destroying the supplies to make them lose their ability to wage war is the shortcut to victory. As a warrior you should get used to such scorched earth tactics.
But that food isn’t just money. It’s the lives of countless people.
My mouth is dry and my throat is parched by the horrible actions of the messenger clan and the Nagas trying to burn it down.
But I was so impatient that I couldn’t get through the Naga Glaive soldiers.
Naga soldiers arrive at the transport ship and begin attacking the soldiers and sailors.
And as if they had been waiting the messengers fired their fire arrows all at once.
But at that very moment arrows imbued with the magical power of fire were cutting through the air and heading towards the transport ship…
“It’s too lethal.”
A blue lightning-like light flashed through the air shooting down all the flying arrows.
“no!?”
The arrows that shot down were eight arrows made of Azure Steel. The arrows flew through the air as if they were living beings of their own shooting down the arrows heading towards the transport ship and stopping in the sky again.
And beneath the arrow appeared a young man wearing a bird mask.
“Ah Azadin?!”
“Isn’t that Azadin from Muan?!”
The messenger clan recognized him and began to gossip.
“Azadin?!”
Karna and Celestial Fire were also surprised by Azadin’s appearance.
“Huh!?”
The heralds fired their flaming arrows again but the arrows flying over Azadin’s head danced and intercepted all of them.
All eight arrows controlled by Azadin are made of steel so if they were regular arrows they would split steel like tofu.
It doesn’t just intercept it’s so fast that it splits the incoming arrows not once but twice or three times.
This means that it can block arrows fired three times more than this amount.
“Oh my god that’s it!”
“It is only possible if you cultivate the skills of flowers birds wind and moon to the utmost extent…”

“Garura?!”
The messenger clan was bewildered by the miraculous miracles unfolding before their eyes.
Everyone in the Jeonryong clan is born with a magical book of assassination called Hwajopungwol.
This grimoire engraved in their blood by the oath with the emperor is a colorless grimoire specialized in assassination. The Herald Clan became famous by killing even royalty with the power of this grimoire… but only a very small number of people in the history of the Herald Clan have mastered it to the extreme.
It was evidence that Garu had mastered the art of flowers birds wind and moon to the fullest.
This secret technique known to be wielded by only Aldis the daughter of the leader Hatir Jedah and the genius Arael was being carried out by Azadin known as the most incompetent of the Herald Clan.
Of course Azadin’s ability to use Garura was something he inherited from Arael… but those who didn’t know that Azadin had inherited Arael’s magic couldn’t help but be shocked.
“You traitor to your clan! What are you doing?!”
“If you don’t get out of the way right now…”
“What if I get kicked out? What are you going to do?”
When Azadin asked the messengers were confused.
Naturally their eyes turned to someone. The person with the authority to negotiate with Azadin the highest ranking person in the place. Naturally everyone’s eyes turned to that person.
A middle-aged female elder was leading their attack. If Azadin had asked her to assassinate her she should not have responded so naively. She might have rushed at the elder and killed her.
To that extent the existence of Azadin was a shock that was difficult to bear for the messenger clan.
They were so shocked and bewildered by the unprecedented traitor Aragasa who had come to the continent of Hybris for 450 years and was the only successful traitor.
“This is Elder Mantra Jedah. Azadin. It is not too late. If you return to your clan now….”
“You will forgive me and accept me again? Is that possible Elder?”
“…….”
For a moment Mantra Jedah was speechless.
Azadin is the one who killed the leader Hatir and ruined the long-cherished desires of the Herald Clan. He is the one who committed the most terrible crime the Herald Clan could imagine.
Is it even possible to forgive and accept him even if he is needed right now?
Of course at this moment I had to somehow boil it down. But I was too embarrassed to tell such an obvious lie.
“I like it when you’re honest! That can’t be true!”
Azadin said this to the elder and laughed.
“And even if you were to forgive me it would be impossible. Instead you should be the one asking for my forgiveness!”
“What?!”
“You’ve gone crazy!”
“You forgive us and leave…”
“Of course I will decide. I am Azadin the First Herald of the Emperor. I am the only Herald left! If not then tell me! Which of you are the Heralds left?!”
Everyone was speechless at Azadin’s shout.
As he said there is no messenger at the moment.
“You’re a messenger?!”
“Yes! It wasn’t me who betrayed the oath it was you! You joined hands with Nagawa to covet the power of the god of death and now you’re trying to starve your people to death!? Where did the pride of killing even a god king to uphold justice go and have you degenerated into such trash!?”
“that….”
“I will give you a chance instead. Come to me! Then I will give you pride and promise you an honorable fight! I will give you a chance to protect humanity uphold virtue engage in justice and live with honor!”
“…….”
All of the messengers were shocked by Azadin’s words.

Are you crazy?
A man who was persecuted by his clan suddenly began to use incredible magic but his confidence was so high that he decided to forgive the entire clan and instead betray them and advise them to surrender to him.
But when Azadin took off his mask everyone realized that his eyes were the Eyes of Harconia which the Heralds held sacred.
The Eye of Harconia appeared to the one called Azadin of Muan?
“If there is pride in Aragasa there is no way they wouldn’t know which fight is truly honorable! Those who were proud of punishing corrupt officials as the emperor’s messengers are now joining hands with the Nagas and burning the food supplies of the starving people!”
“….”
At Azadin’s shout several of the messengers gasped.
That’s true.
When the Herald Clan was persecuted by others for killing the Yaegasu royal family it was also their pride.
By order of the emperor he punished corrupt officials and saved the people.
But now that they are clearly on the side of harming the people they must know that their actions are contradictory.
however….
“Everyone keep shooting arrows. We’re going to burn the transport ships.”
Mantra Jedah instructed his subordinates to mix words with Azadin thinking it was pointless.
Arrows fly toward the transport ship. Even if you have doubts about the clan’s actions the messenger clan has a culture with a strict hierarchy of obedience. Azadin’s words which betray the clan’s order are nonsense that should not be listened to no matter how reasonable.
“Is this how it ends up?”
Azadin unleashed his Garura. Blue-colored Azure Steel arrows danced through the air intercepting the incoming arrows.
However every time the arrows collide the magical power of the messengers begins to eat away at the magical power of Garura attached to Azadin’s arrows.
If you keep attacking you will eventually be able to break through. At first I was so amazed by the way Garura spread out that I watched absentmindedly but no matter how great a strong person is they are no match for the amount of water.
“Even if you can use Garura it’s only good for protecting the ship.”
Azadin smiled bitterly as he recited the Mantra.
It’s a shame that his ability which he has honed to the extreme is something that cannot be left alive.
“But aren’t you forgetting something?”
Azadin laughed with a snort.
“hmm?!”
“Let’s go let’s go!”
Suddenly Nagadari turns around and runs away.
To be exact the black energy of the necromancy flew like a whip and struck the corpses of the dead Nagas causing them to rise and charge.
And then a gloomy-looking knight appeared next to the sailors who were guarding the auxiliary ship below and doing firefighting work.
“I will join.”
Sir Jibek swung his sword and began to cut down the nagas that were targeting the sailors.
“this….”
“This is not the time for us either!”
“We can’t leave it to them alone! Break through the siege!”
The Celestial Fire Knights continued to push through the Naga Glaive Troopers blocking their path breaking through the siege.
To begin with the Celestial Fire Knights had overwhelming military power.
Not only did they lose momentum and time but their troop losses were actually greater.
Their strategic goal could not be achieved without burning the transport ships during this time… and Azadin’s group was standing in the way of that strategic goal.
The Heralds’ operations were precise but if one thing went wrong the others would go wrong as well. The isolated Celestial Fire Knights began to gain energy again. If it had been normal they would have been able to burn the transport ships before they could even react.
“Traitor of the clan! I will kill you!”
“Everyone is saying that so why am I still alive?”
“This kid!”
One of the spirited messengers rushed at Azadin. He spread his wings of flowers birds wind and moon and closed the space in an instant before rushing at him…
-Cock!
As Azadin swung his Qing executioner the entire scepter he was holding was cut off.
The Azuresteel axe-axe of the executioner shattered steel weapons like reeds with just a touch.
“…Huh?!”
Those who rushed at Azadin felt a chill down their spine. The steel weapon in their hands was cut but it didn’t feel good. If Azadin had thrust the axe just a little longer it would have been torn to pieces.
Suddenly he realized that Azadin was looking after him.
The reason he only guarded the transport ship with Garura was because he didn’t want to kill the messengers. If Azadin had wanted to something terrible would have happened.
“Everyone stop!”
Mantra Jeddah realized that staying here any longer was not going to achieve its strategic goals.
The Celestial Fire Knights were breaking through the siege.
“Retreat! Azadin son of Acre! Remember that you have committed another great crime against your clan!”
The messengers began to retreat gnashing their teeth.
Because of the strict caste system the Nagas threw themselves into the fight against the Celestial Fire Knights and the undead forces Scott created while the Heralds were leaving buying time for the Heralds to leave.
*********
The messenger clan fled without achieving their goal and the Nagas who had been blocking them also escaped with great casualties.
The Celestial Fire Knights also suffered considerable damage but there were only a few casualties among their soldiers and servants and no casualties among the Celestials.
In retrospect there was no significant damage. However if Azadin had not stepped forward and blocked the fire arrows the transport ship and the food it was transporting would not have been safe.
‘What should I do?’
Karna the leader of the Celestial Fire approached the transport ship with complicated feelings.
