Night of the Soulless Heathens – 31

#31. Black Magic Disaster 2
Kozel is of course a scumbag who slaughters his people but Tarki is no different in that he also plunders his people.
Well this Kaka Chiko siblings are so friendly that they’re probably saying nice things. If they ever meet Kozel they’ll go around saying that they support Kozel and that they’ll sell him a copy of the Shinwangjinseo.
It was an obvious action but the siblings were not hateful because they tried not to make enemies.
“So where are you going brother?”
“I’m going back to Salasma. I lost the mercenary group so I have to go back alone… They also said they were going to Salasma so I’m going with them.”
“Well if we continue like this the Rescue Knights will be setting up camp.”
Kaka and Chico looked at Medium and Ismail.
“…She’s a beauty. A girl like this might be taken in by the Rescue Knights. It would be best to avoid her.”
The Rescue Knights recruit orphans from all over the place and there were rumors that they often kidnapped healthy children. Since girls with outstanding looks like Medium were in demand everywhere Kaka and Chico warned the group.
“Are you telling us to avoid the Knights and join the wyvern hunt? We are not warriors we are just pilgrims.”
Azadin and his party were currently disguised as helpless civilians who had asked Pilgrim Tarki to escort them. But they were told to participate in a dangerous wyvern hunt as the Rescue Knights might take Midiam away?
“Well I’m not asking you to join the hunt. I’m asking you to join a group that takes a detour. When there are a lot of people bandits and demons won’t attack you so easily.”
When avoiding beasts and bandits people who don’t know each other gather together to increase their numbers. However… it’s surprising that they would avoid the Rescue Knights despite the threat they face.
If demons and thieves are uncertain disasters that may or may not appear doesn’t that mean that the Rescue Knights are a certain disaster?
“Even if they are wyverns they will avoid crowded places. We will hunt wyverns but we will do that separately. For now we will just follow the path together.”
“Hmm?”
However Azadin who had faith in the Trinity of Archangels asked out of curiosity.
“But do you really have to avoid the Rescue Knights like that? Even if you have to go off the beaten path? Even so you wouldn’t force someone to take you if they say they don’t want to right?”
“….”
Kaka Chico and even Tarki were surprised.
“No you… seem to be a very devout believer.”
“Are you stupid oppa? That’s why you go on a pilgrimage. What are you talking about as if it were obvious?”
“Anyway the leader of the Rescue Knights blocking the road here is quite corrupt and vicious so he is dangerous.”
“ah.”
Azadin was convinced when he heard that.

“It is inevitable that there will be deviant elements in any organization.”
“Ahaha. That’s right.”
Kaka let out an awkward laugh.
“Then let’s go this way for now.”
Azadin’s party asked the siblings Kaka and Chico to join them and the siblings received permission from their employers the merchants to accompany Azadin’s party.
“Well it’s good to have a large group. Thieves and demons won’t attack you recklessly if you have a large group.”
The merchants readily welcomed their company.
*********
While staying at the inn for a night the merchants and adventurers invited Azadin to a drinking party.
“Isn’t it because we hire adventurers that you pilgrims will be safe? So come and join us and get to know each other.”
They say they want to be friendly but they are actually appealing that they are the ones who are making sacrifices and taking losses. It seems that they are paying for the safety of the adventurers they hire and Azadin and his party are just riding along without paying.
‘Even if we are truly helpless pilgrims isn’t it important to fill the numbers to avoid thieves and evil spirits as they say? Is it a waste of money to hire mercenaries? These merchants don’t look like very good quality.’
Since it’s already like this I’m worried about what will happen later. Of course I’m a little drunk right now so I’m saying this without self-control. But since I usually do that kind of calculation I guess that’s why I’m saying this to Azadin.
Azadin refused to drink. He wore a helmet to hide his scars but if he were to drink with others he would have to show his face. The scars on his face were so distinctive that he did not want to show his bare face to others.
“I am a pilgrim so I would like to decline.”
“Oh my. The young man is talking nonsense.”
“It’s already so congested that it’ll be difficult to finish the pilgrimage.”
“No I don’t go on a pilgrimage with a specific period or place in mind. I do it to gain revelations and accumulate virtue.”
“Aha. I guess this must have been an accident back home.”
“Did you touch a noble daughter or something?”
When everyone said that Azadin was a pilgrim they all thought he was a young man who had caused an accident in his hometown and ran away on the pretext of going on a pilgrimage.
“Okay stop it. Don’t mess with this boring pilgrim friend. Don’t expect any answers or anything.”
Tarki fearing that Azadin or Medium would explode tried to stop them but the already drunk merchants continued to question Azadin.
Then Azadin took off his helmet. Since he was already in the company of these people he could not keep his helmet on while eating and drinking. If he had to show his face someday it would be better to show it from the beginning. That is why he wore a blindfold inside his helmet.
“Huh? What is that?”
“I have a wound. It keeps oozing pus.”
In fact the blindfold was soaked in something that looked like pus. It was made to look like pus by applying goat hair wax ester from the hair of Kerim goats.
Of course the merchants who did not know the inside story thought so and asked Azadin.
“But can you see ahead?”
“I can see through this gap. It’s small though.”
Azadin made that excuse. Since no one was interested in or touching the blindfold soaked with pus anyway everyone passed it by without looking closely.
“Here have a drink!”
Merchants and adventurers offered Azadin drinks.
“If you drink alcohol when you are seriously injured it will only get worse.”
“You said that pus would continue to come out anyway? Then does it not matter whether I drink or not now?”
“Haha.”
Everyone was drunk and talking easily.

“Oh you’re not going to drink? I guess I should consider taking this as a companion. You’re carrying your children with you so you don’t want them to get taken away by the Rescue Knights do you?”
“But is she your son or daughter? Or is she your younger sibling? The girl is really pretty.”
“He is my younger brother.”
“Really? They don’t look alike. Even their hair colors are different.”
“Because we are relatives.”
“Are you taking those children on a pilgrimage too?”
“Yes. But I have other relatives whom I can rely on so I plan to meet them and talk to them.”
“Hahaha. If you don’t mind how about sending her to us as an adopted daughter?”
“….”
Sending her away as an adopted daughter could literally mean raising her as an adopted daughter but it could also be a shameless suggestion to raise the pretty child as one’s future lover.
So when making an adoption proposal you have to be polite and considerate to avoid any misunderstandings and have a serious discussion about how to raise the child and what to do about the future.
These merchants don’t seem to have very good temperaments even considering they’re drunk.
“Come on drink anyway!”
The drunkards kept forcing Azadin to drink as if they were determined to get him to drink.
“Then I’m sorry to keep refusing you.”
Azadin accepted the glass.
*********
The merchants who had drunk several rounds of alcohol chatted away.
“But I heard there’s a pretty nice girl at the place you’re going to this time?”
“Oh right. There’s a nice girl at the mill.”
“How can there be any good women in a rural area like that?”
“It’s the messenger clan.”
“…!?”
“What? The messenger clan?”
“To be exact she was a woman from the messenger clan who was sold into slavery and then bought by the mill owner.”
“A woman from the Herald Clan was sold into slavery? Does that make sense? Those guys are monsters.”
“Have you seen it?”
“Oh. When I was young. They were scary guys. How did you catch a girl like that?”
“Oh to be exact it’s not that the woman is a messenger it’s that her father is a messenger. The guy who was going around as a messenger got the woman pregnant and gave birth to the child but the parents caught him.”
One of the missions of the Herald Clan was to find a successor or spouse from outside the country. The clan that came from the wreck of five sailing ships if you mix blood within that clan it will eventually weaken.
If they only married within their own clan without mixing in blood from outsiders they would eventually become weak due to incest so just like the Yaegasu clan the messenger clan had no choice but to mix blood with the Hybris people.
If you don’t take the illegitimate children born in the meantime to the Jeonryun clan’s holy land this kind of problem will arise.
“Hehehe. Are you really a messenger clan?”
“Didn’t your daughter just have an affair with some punk and have a child with him and then you sold him into slavery as a messenger?”
The emperor and the kings of the eight kingdoms also prohibited slavery.
From the perspective of the rulers recognizing slavery would reduce productivity. From the perspective of the Eight Kingdoms which do not have an environment in which they can continuously acquire slaves through wars with other countries recognizing slavery would only foster religious fanaticism.
There was no need to create traitors among themselves when the Kurts and other dark forces were always eyeing humanity.
But to the Hybris the Heralds are soulless unholy beings. They are no different from rocks on the roadside. Just as kicking rocks on the roadside is not considered assault making the Heralds your slaves is not a crime.
That is what it means to be called a soulless being. The violence committed against them is not recorded as evil karma in the cycle of reincarnation. Any illegality injustice violence or fraud against the messenger clan is all affirmed.
In other words it means that they can falsely accuse you of being a messenger clan in order to create slaves.
“Anyway that girl is pretty. But I said I could hug her if I gave the manager of the prison a bottle of alcohol.”
“What? Is that true? Any alcohol?”
“Hehehe. I want a slave like that too.”
“You can buy the herald clan she gave birth to. Well that’ll cost you quite a bit though.”
“But isn’t it true that the blood of the messenger clan is almost non-existent? Then?”
“What do you know? You’re just creating slaves.”
That’s when they started babbling.
-Wow!
Suddenly there was a loud noise and one of the adventurers who had been chatting with them just a moment ago fell to the table. Azadin stood in front of him with a red face from drinking.
“Ugh. This kid!”
“what?”
“What is it? Are you asking me to do it?”
