    #307. St. Mallory Underpass 5

This is not something that can be decided by a single priest or paladin.

It is a major watershed moment that could spark a war between the two greatest sects of humanity.

Even though Heine had been entrusted with authority by the high-ranking clergy of the Charity Church the situation was such that he could not act rashly.

‘What should we do? We should stop them… but the enemy is in a state of great exhaustion after fighting the Angel of Corruption. But even so if we fight and lose we will all be blamed and die.’

When she was unable to function properly due to the pressure placed on her Azadin stepped in.

“Hey Lord Jecht. It feels like a deep connection to meet you here. I’m sorry to bother Lord Jebeck but may I ask what you’re doing right now?”

“…As you can see we are seeing the ugly side of the Salvation Knights. Look at these angels of corruption.”

Zect pointed to the angel of corruption.

“The Salvation Knights actually obtained the blood of the angels by killing them. And this is the corpse right here. The Angel of Corruption is the one that moves with magic and curses in the body of the angel that the Salvation Knights extracted the blood of.”

“Please Lord Jecht don’t be so presumptuous as to dismiss it. The Angel of Corruption is a vestige of an ancient war that died long ago. Even Lord Jecht cannot tolerate such an irreverent statement that the Salvation Knights killed the Angel.”

    Heine countered Sect’s statement.

    Then Jecht smiled bitterly.

“But isn’t that why you came into this underpass? To find out the secret that created the Celestial Fire Knights?”

“Oh so Lord Jecht came here to find out the secret of Celestial Fire?”

Azadin asked in a mocking tone. Of course Azadin Jecht and Heine all knew each other’s true intentions but they were in no position to say anything officially.

“We were just having a regular purge to root out the cultists hiding underground.”

“What a coincidence. We just happened to come down here to suppress the cultists and investigate the strange noises we sometimes hear in the underground passage.”

Heine responded with the same words.

    “Lord Azadin?”

    “Tour car…..”

    “sightseeing?”

“I’ve always been interested in St. Mallory. I’ve had the Knights Templar books with me since I was a child.”

    “…….”

Zect thought Azadin was mocking him but Zibek knew that Azadin was being sincere.

‘Are you saying that coming into this underpass is part of tourism? Are you crazy?’

Heine was half in doubt but she had to admit that Azadin was genuinely interested in the St. Mallory tour. In fact he was paying a tour guide to take him around the town of St. Mallory!

“So what are you going to do? Sir Azadin. You and I have many problems that have piled up. Would you like to resolve them now? When I am tired and my men are wounded and struggling?”

    “It’s a piling problem… I’m sorry but I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“A copy of the New King’s Book.”

“I told you there weren’t any. How many times have I told you that I used them all up to restore the function of Bthuma’s throne?”

“Are you asking me to believe that just because I said that?”

“Okay. Trust me. How many times do I have to tell you?”

    “….”

Zect slowly drew his sword showing his anger at Azadin’s harsh words.

But then suddenly the water surface of the sewer began to shake.

The swarms of rats and insects were startled and began to move around busily.

    “…This is.”

    “I guess there isn’t one.”

I felt another angel of corruption at work.

“It might sound strange to say this in this situation but…. “

    Azadin spoke up.

“Instead of wasting energy fighting among ourselves here shouldn’t we first explore the secrets of the Celestial Fire? It seems more reasonable than wasting energy among ourselves here.”

“Can you trust me and leave it to me?”

Zect laughed at Azadin saying that he was talking nonsense.

    But Azadin nodded.

    “of course!”

    “?!”

For a moment Zect doubted his own ears.

    “So Sir Heine.”

    “yes?”

“Should I cut it like this… in a large format?”

Azadin reorganized the team’s arrangement. Azadin and his party stood in front with Heine at the rear and Jecht at the rear.

    ‘What the… are you crazy?’

Heine was terrified by Azadin’s deployment. If Jecht betrayed and launched a preemptive strike Heine would be killed by Jecht first.

In other words from Azadin’s perspective he threw the untrustworthy Heine into the buffer zone with Jecht.

If Heine were to hit Azadin on the back of the head he would have to come to an agreement with Jecht who was behind him.

Taking advantage of the situation of a three-way battle he placed Jecht and Heine behind him. Could there be another bold arrangement like this?

‘It may be theoretically possible but what crazy person would trust the back of their head to a theory like this?’

    Jecht was equally confused.

‘How dare you do something so bold? Since you brought it up first you can’t say it was a joke now. But does this guy really not have a copy of the Shinwangjinseo?’

Jecht had no doubt that Azadin had embezzled the copy of the Book of the New King comparing himself to himself. Aside from learning the magic spells written in the Book of the New King the copy of the Book of the New King was a magical treasure that served as a medium for gathering the faith of the King’s Church and a source of powerful magical power. He thought it was impossible for a wizard not to embezzle something like that.

It suddenly occurred to me that if it was Azadin he would be more than capable of doing that.

Suddenly it occurred to me that maybe it wasn’t a complete lie that he was here as a tourist.

“Well is this a large enough size to satisfy everyone? I’m glad we can cooperate. Well shall we go?”

Azadin pointed with his hand to the heart of the underpass where the Angel of Corruption was causing a pulsation of magical energy.

    “…….”

Heine and Seck both became dumb after eating honey.

    “My jecht kyung. How…..”

Zect’s subordinates were also in an awkward position.

They wanted to fight back but they had neither the justification nor the stamina. They had already fought the Angel of Corruption once causing many casualties and deaths while Azadin and his party seemed to have suffered little. Above all Azadin’s easygoing attitude scared them.

From the perspective of the Church of the King Azadin is a high-ranking criminal who destroyed the kingdoms of Korasar and Btuma and usurped a copy of the Book of the New King and is a wizard who is becoming more powerful by the day.

As the list of crimes that were laid against Azadin grows so too does the fear of him.

Azadin smiled bitterly as he watched her frightened by the false illusion she had created.

“You stay here collect the wounded and dead and contact your superiors.”

    “Ject Sir?”

“I have spoken my mind so I will act together with them.”

Jecht accepted Azadin’s offer to keep his word.

“Good. Excellent choice Lord Jecht. Welcome to the fold.”

Azadin really left the rear of the group to Jecht.

    *********

The person who contributed most to the exploration of the underground passage was the necromancer Scott.

Scott McGreen used his special vision to check the aura of living creatures and he checked the surrounding undead monsters before moving the corpses to prevent any possible traps and he guided the party through the shortest route while clearing the path blocked by sewage and waste.

Even Heine who did not like the undead and necromancy was speechless at how quickly accurately and neatly Scott handled things.

    “Hmm.”

Since Zect was using necromancy himself he couldn’t say anything about Scott’s necromancy.

    Then Azadin spoke.

“But Lord Jecht there’s something I want to ask you.”

    “What do you mean?”

“Your subordinate the knight Lord Maya followed you here and turned into a lycanthrope?”

“I allowed him to take solo action to get revenge on you but he got caught in the middle of it. I haven’t seen him since.”

“I saw you at St. Mallory’s recently. You seemed to know I was coming and were waiting for me but you really haven’t seen me?”

“We did share that you were coming but I guess they found out the information through that contact.”

Zect replied with a dismissive tone.

In other words Jecht had warned his subordinates to prepare for the situation where Azadin would come down from the Chadra Plateau and this fact was relayed to Maya through the subordinates’ communication network.

But it was beyond my control that Maya became a lycanthrope. That was the excuse.

“You take your subordinates’ lives too lightly. Well since you are the descendant of the Yaegas Gods even if you treat your subordinates like that they will all follow you. In a normal organization you would be stabbed in the back. If you are born with such a precious bloodline no matter how long you live you will be ignorant of the ways of the world.”

Azadin gave his advice half-listening to Jecht’s excuses.

Heine who had been listening smiled faintly.

‘As expected a crazy person speaks without thinking… There’s nothing wrong with that. This is really tricky isn’t it?’

She was secretly delighted to see Azadin secretly teasing Jecht.

But then Scott who was controlling the undead at the front shouted.

“Captain! We’ve come out to an open space!”

    “okay?”

“There’s a ladder and a lot of discarded magic potions? I think this is the basement of the Wisdom Church!”

As Scott said Azadin and his party arrived at the bottom of a massive sewer passage.

A huge iron ladder that seemed to rise into the sky was attached to the wall and above it was a building built in the era of giants with countless abandoned experimental specimens and traces of magical drugs piled up underneath.

They reached the heart of the Wisdom Order their laboratory without encountering the Angel of Corruption.

‘What good luck… why at a time like this?’

Heine didn’t know whether to be happy or sad about this situation.

Up until now the Mercy Order has sent out several elite exploration teams but none of them have been able to get close to the Wisdom Order’s research lab.

This was because powerful monsters including the Angel of Corruption appeared more and more frequently as they approached the Wisdom Order.

However Azadin’s party arrived at the base of the Wisdom Order without much resistance.

‘He cooked some porridge and gave it to the dog.’

Jecht also noticed this situation and clicked his tongue. Thanks to Jecht and his men’s sacrifices that were almost annihilation while fighting various monsters including the Angel of Corruption the underground was cleaned up and Azadin and his party took advantage of the gap.

Perhaps it was a coincidence that the Knights of Courage adventurers and treasure hunters who were not visible here recently gathered here.

Azadin and his party arrived at the heart of the Knights of Wisdom’s secret research lab much more easily than they had expected.

‘Is it okay? Even if the secret of the Wisdom Church… is known to the Inquisitor? Even if the Wisdom Church is our rival faction he is not the author even though he is a member of the same Knights of the Salvation Order.’

    Heine suddenly became anxious.
