Night of the Soulless Heathens – 304

#305. St. Mallory Underpass 3
“Okay then please assign just one Sabbath guide.”
“There are many enemies and it is dangerous inside. Above all there is a possibility that they will be hostile to that Jecht. Is that okay? Wouldn’t it be better for you to bring more people?”
“Isn’t the success of a job just getting out safely? In a small space it’s more advantageous for a small number of skilled elite agents to move around. Even if there are more people they’ll only restrict each other’s movements and increase the number of casualties. We need to work together as a team but the more people there are the more time it takes to coordinate.”
Should I go around carrying around agents of the Wisdom Church saying I’m crazy and not know when I’ll get stabbed in the back of the head? Azadin limited the number of agents to just one.
“Teamwork? If so then there’s nothing we can do.”
Heine sighed as Azadin limited the number. The other knights around her signaled to ignore Azadin’s request but Heine shook her head.
“Well then I understand. I will accompany you. Is that okay?”
“Hmm? Sir Heine are you speaking yourself?”
“yes.”
“Okay then let me come with you.”
Azadin decided to join hands with the Mercy Cult whose sinister intentions were clearly visible.
Then Heine took off the habit that covered her body on the spot. To her surprise underneath the habit was a steamweave chainmail made of machine-spun wire.
Steamweave chainmail is the highest grade chainmail made by the dwarves of Banreung. It is light yet its defensive power is comparable to that of plate armor.
It is surprising that they are wearing an item that is so rarely produced that even the dwarven nobility say they don’t have enough to wear among themselves.
In addition she was equipped with knuckles on her left and right hands which had blades made of ceramite.
‘Duskbiter’.
It was a famous weapon passed down to the Mercy Order like Aurelia Dunn of Azadin.
It was almost like a certificate proving how much she was expected to do in the Mercy Church.
As Heine gestured to his men to go the members of the Order of Mercy nodded and stepped back. Perhaps because they were all skilled assassins they didn’t seem to be in a hurry but their pace was so fast that they quickly blended into the crowd.

The Giants’ Underground Waterway as its name suggests was a sewer large enough for even giants to pass through.
This place was a smuggling route for a smuggling organization a place of worship for a cult and a magical realm teeming with all sorts of monsters including Slime Oz that grew by feeding on the city’s filth.
Even the St. Mallory sewer explorers only managed to crack down on smuggling rings superficially as each entrance led to a completely different area of the labyrinthine underground passage and the area was still full of monsters.
Lord Jecht was setting up camp here.
They came down to the entrance of the underground passage set up in the King’s Church St. Mallory Parish and set up camp below. They were slowly advancing while clearing out the goblins undead and slimes that filled the sewers.

But then from up there a training knight comes down the ladder struggling while carrying supplies on his back.
As soon as he got down he put down the supplies picked up the letter on the top and ran to the camp’s leader Lord Jecht.
“Sir Jecht. Here is a letter.”
“Who sent it?”
“This is Bishop Sehnat.”
“Sehnath… isn’t he connected to the Northern Qi?”
Zect smiled bitterly. Those connected to the Northern Qi are untrustworthy. Didn’t he suffer needless humiliation after being deceived by their inaccurate information and heading to the Chadra Plateau?
They used Azadin as bait to lure Lord Jecht to the Chadra Plateau and in the meantime they established the Celestial Fire Knights.
From Zect’s perspective the guy who screwed over him was sending him a letter now but he couldn’t ignore it and get angry.
“But he’s a high-ranking member of the Rescue Knights so let’s see what he has to say.”
Zect took out the letter read it and laughed.
It was a warning that Azadin had entered St. Mallory and would soon enter the sewers. Sure it was a warning but since when did you care about Lord Jecht?
“I thought the King’s Church was a rabble but these Knights of the Salvation Order are even worse. Are they obsessed with factional strife?…”
“King Maya challenged him but…”
Azadin’s arrival at St. Mallory was already known to them through the case of Lord Maya a junior paladin under their care.
“This old fox also knows that we have figured that out. That is why the Mercy Church has been added… and also informed us that Jibek is attached to them.”
“If it’s Jibek…”
“Are you talking about Lord Jibek?”
“Yes. I already knew that he was in contact with Azadin in Korasaar but I didn’t know that they would be together here in Arangi.”
Conservative figures in the King’s Church viewed the territory of the Knights Templar as part of the Kingdom of Arangi.
You could tell how much Jecht despised the Knights Templar to the core by the fact that he called St. Mallory the Kingdom of Arangi.
“He was our motive… so we have to be careful.”
Everyone became wary when Jibek’s name was mentioned. Jibek had once been their comrade so he would understand their knowledge and their ways well.
“There’s no need to be so intimidated. The only thing that Zibek has been trained for is coming in through this entrance. Even if Azadin’s liver is swollen he won’t open the sewer lid in the middle of the King’s Church St. Mallory’s Parish and climb down inside right?”
The training held in the Kingdom of Tarasar was a practice exercise that assumed entering the underground passage entrance located in the Parish of St. Mallory and passing through it.
Even if he knew their methods what would he know since he had never put it into practice?
-Kurururung….
At that moment the entire subway began to resonate.
In front of them countless numbers of bugs were seen quickly fleeing along the channels and walls from something ahead.
“You probably haven’t experienced anything like this before so you don’t need to worry about Zibek.”
Zect walked forward with a bitter smile. Beyond the torrent of insects the smell of a great evil a corrupted death wafted.
“Angel of Corruption…..”
The other knights in the camp groaned as they noticed what was approaching.
“How did I end up at camp…”
*********
Azadin and his party began to enter the sewer entrance managed by the Mercy Church following Heine’s recommendation.
The entrance to the sewer managed by the Charity Church required a 20-foot ladder to get down.

Since there were no lights on below it felt like the darkness itself was gaping open and swallowing everything so people would often lose consciousness while climbing down the ladder and fall to their deaths.
“Hmm?!”
Azadin stepped down into the sewer and looked around.
His eyes piercing through the darkness discovered human corpses abandoned throughout the canal.
Perhaps the corpses were thrown down by the Mercy Church for some reason.
‘That’s why the underground water is overflowing with monsters. They are immediately throwing out their own corpses.’
Azadin clicked his tongue at the ugly sight of the Mercy Cult but then Scott got down.
“Oh the corpse from the beginning! It tastes like honey. Captain. Can I use it?”
“Write it.”
When Azadin gave permission Scott was so excited that he used necromancy to raise the corpse.
The corpses with signs of torture rose up making a groaning eerie sound as they exhaled the air remaining in their lungs.
“Oh my. It looks like the bodies of smugglers have washed up on the shore. It has nothing to do with our sect.”
Heine warned telling a lie that no one would believe.
“Everyone be careful. As the world becomes more dangerous these days the monsters in the underground waterways are also getting stronger.”
“What is mainly dangerous?”
“There are slimes amoebas and other amorphous creatures commonly called oozes. They are not easily hit by swords and instead tend to swallow people whole.”
Heine warned about Woods and the slimes but then Zebeck muttered.
“Angel of corruption.”
“….”
“Angel of Corruption? What is that?”
“It is the corpse of an angel who died from an evil power. It uses evil magic and its fighting ability is truly that of a higher-level demon… This is why the St. Mallory Cistern is an impenetrable labyrinth.”
“Hmm. Since you’re at the level of a high-level demon… wouldn’t it be better to just infiltrate the Wisdom Sect on the surface?”
“If you do well you can go without meeting the angel of corruption.”
Jibek said so and made the sign of the cross.
An aura of blessing emanated from Zibek and enveloped everyone in the group including Azadin.
“Huh?”
Heine realized that Seebeck’s white magic was quite pure and powerful.
“I don’t know the way from here. Sir Heine. You know this place well don’t you? Please guide me. Just… avoid the angel of corruption.”
The Order of Mercy will have their own maps and guidelines for exploring the Underground starting from their own parish. They will know where and what monsters are most prevalent so they will also have information on the areas where the Angel of Corruption is most prevalent.
‘Look at this? This is a bit tricky… Are you from the Shadow Knights of the Church of King Zibek?’
Heine calmly guided them although he was taken aback by Seebeck’s sharp observation.
“Then I will guide you. If anything happens don’t doubt me. I will do my best to guide you to the best route. However recently there has been an evil force stirring in this underpass…”
At that moment Heine was speechless.
Scott used the undead that had fallen to the ground to gather up some debris from around him and made a sort of boat out of it before climbing onto it.
The undead provided propulsion as they pushed the boat through the water.
“Captain! Captain you get in here too. You never know what might come out of the sewage.”
“Okay.”
Azadin boarded Scott’s boat without hesitation.
Even Zibek climbed onto the boat without a word. As the undead waded through the sewage the boat slowly but steadily cut through the underground water.
‘What a bunch of weirdos. No matter how corrupted that guy Jibek is he was a former paladin and boarded a boat operated by necromancy? If that’s the case then Azadin was an active paladin in the first place. What a bunch of messed up guys.’
Heine did not like Azadin’s group but he preferred to ride in the boat with them rather than walk around with his feet wet in the sewage.
‘I guess it’s better to just comply with what they say for a while. We can gauge their abilities and just in case…’
Heine boarded the boat keeping an eye out for Azadin and his party.
