    #268.Chadra’s Loser 6

When a member of the Herald Clan came to the Chadra Plateau to become a trainee knight everyone thought it was strange but also didn’t think it was a big deal.

The Chadra Plateau is the bottom of a crucible where prisoners and troublemakers are confined.

If a person from the Herald Clan became a Paladin then naturally there was nowhere else to go but here.

However Azadin’s unconventional actions after that shocked everyone.

Less than two months after assuming office Azadin exposed the corruption of Chapter Master Hexenmeyer and had him arrested.

And in just one week he captured Chashan the founder of the Dwarven Arrow known as the Oger of the Chadra Plateau and destroyed his power.

It was only natural that Azadin’s name would resonate throughout the entire Chadra Plateau and now throughout the entire Rescue Knights.

    *********

Azadin left his Legion troops Bernard Giacomo and Sir Braham at the Southeast Rock Fortress.

“Bernard and Giacomo cast a blood-thirsty spell on drug addicts.”

Ginseng an expensive herb was commonly used as a folk remedy to help drug addicts rehabilitate.

However if you have the ‘Blood Vigor’ spell you can replace the effect of ginseng.

“Are we talking about this many patients the two of us?”

    “There are more wizards right?”

Azadin pointed to the Chashan and the dwarven sorcerers bound in black steel chains.

“Teach them blood magic so they can use the Blood Vigor spell. No most of them can probably use it right now.”

“Then what will you do Commander? If you leave so many troops here….”

“Let’s take Countach and Camilla and go see Sir Selim.”

“Isn’t it dangerous for a small group to meet like this?”

“The place where we need personnel is here at the Southeast Rock Fortress. We’ll try to talk things out with Selim.”

    “….”

    “You look incredulous Bernard.”

“I feel like you haven’t really been able to solve anything with words so far.”

Bernard said so and gave Azadin an Azuresteel dagger and an arrowhead.

    “What is this?”

“The dwarves had it. It’s a dwarven Azuresteel dagger so it should be quite useful.”

“Hmm. I’m glad. Aurelia Dawn has regenerative powers but honestly the taste of cutting was really dull. There’s also the Cheonggangjeon that has been renewed. It’s really good.”

Azadin took his Azuresteel weapons and set off.

    *********

Selim’s realm is called the Chadra Springs and was originally located in the middle of a basin on the Chadra Plateau teeming with all kinds of wild beasts.

Here there is a Yongcheon area where the rain that falls on the plateau gushes out as spring water a forest that grew along the Yongcheon area the remains of giants and a wide grassland that the giants cleared to make fields.

This place was considered a terrible place where countless wild animals swarmed and people could not live….

Indeed the roads were damaged by all kinds of animals.

“This is an area where the Emperor’s Path does not exist. Even the Emperor was unable to occupy the Rescue Knights.”

Azadin rode his horse to avoid the road that was once a road but had been turned upside down by the hooves of countless animals.

    “Hey Captain. From the sky…..”

    “know.”

Azadin felt eyes looking down on them from above.

Above a griffin was flying high in the sky watching over Azadin and his party.

The griffin was a monster the size of a bear but it flew so high that it looked like a small cloud to the naked eye making it difficult to see.

If a guy like that were to dive down from the sky and attack the horses everyone would be helpless.

“Should I dive down like an eagle?”

“That won’t work. The Griffin is heavier than the Eagle. Instead of diving down to attack it will glide down from behind and attack. Of course it will be fast and big.”

Azadin said this and took up his bow.

But did he feel something for Azadin?

The Griffin’s murderous intent targeting Azadin from the sky suddenly disappeared.

    and….

The other beasts were attacked by the griffin with a sound similar to a cry “Kueek.”

The griffin’s sudden attack on the zebra tore its neck in half.

Griffin bit the staggering zebra blood gushing out like a waterfall then kicked off the ground got up on both feet like a bear and threw the zebra to the ground.

Since it was a place with abundant food it seemed that they chose to hunt other animals rather than dangerous humans.

    “What a wise man.”

Azadin rode his horse still holding his bow wary of the griffin.

    *********

A fence is visible in the Chadra Yongcheonji grassland.

It was the Chadra Yongcheonji Ranch built to supply horses to the Rescue Knights.

This was the headquarters of Selim.

    “Hmm.”

Azadin frowned as he watched the dead horses hanging in the corral rotting.

The horses were killed by the griffin’s attack and the dead horses were left to be eaten and then abandoned which was irresponsible neglect.

    “Who?!”

But then a voice was heard from under the ranch fence.

The ranch’s shepherds were hiding under the fence armed with glaives and staring at Azadin.

They dug a trench under the fence and created a path all over the farm.

Perhaps this path was created to avoid the attacks of griffins diving down from the sky.

“I am Azadin a trainee knight of the Rescue Knights.”

“Huh? Are you all of them?”

The shepherds saw Azadin and began to look around.

“Have you come to kill the three Selims?”

    “I came to talk. Why?”

“Please kill that crazy little bastard. It doesn’t look like it’s going to survive.”

“What does that mean? What did he do? Did he eat people?”

    “no.”

    “I’m hatching that griffin egg.”

    “what?”

    *********

Griffins which are monsters reproduce by hatching eggs but like most monsters half of Griffin eggs die before hatching.

However Selim takes the eggs of such griffins and hatches them himself in his home.

And they raise such griffins by feeding them.

“The griffins are eating shitting and causing chaos here.”

“Griffins have a habit of throwing their food up high and it’s not uncommon for horse hooves to suddenly fall from the sky breaking roofs and destroying houses.”

    “How poisonous is that shit?”

“People are getting hurt and dying and it’s chaos. Aren’t we digging holes in the ground right now? We’re doing this because we’re scared of Griffin. This.”

“I can’t even take care of my horses and cattle properly. Originally this place was a bit remote but it was a place of abundance where I had no problem eating and living but that damn Minotaur came!”

The shepherds were pleading with Azadin as if he were some kind of savior.

“Please kill that little bastard with his head cut off.”

“But I don’t think it’s a crime worthy of death. Why is the reaction worse than that of tyrants?”

“When a tyrant demands money or women I can at least understand where his greed leads. But I can’t understand a madman.”

“Oh I understand. First let me meet Selim. After all he’s a knight of the Knights of the Salvation Order. I can’t just kill him right?”

Azadin immediately put aside the shepherds’ request to kill Sir Selim and gave separate orders to Camilla and Countach.

    “Camilla. Check out Selim’s residence.”

“Oh right. That Minotaur might be eating people behind the scenes right?”

“Yes Countach. You protect your sister.”

    “Yeah. Countach. I’ll protect you.”

Azadin sent Camilla and Countess to investigate separately and went to Selim’s residence to meet him.

    *********

Selim was drinking milk tea while looking at the cows in the dairy farm.

It is a pastoral scene with a tea table placed in front of cows in a pasture. However the person sitting is also a Minotaur so the harmony created by the sight of the cow-headed beast and the grazing cows is extremely bizarre.

Moreover griffins were roaming the clear sky of that pastoral ranch.

‘Are the cows okay? Don’t the griffins attack the cows?’

It was when Azadin had such doubts.

    “Oh isn’t that Sir Azadin?”

    “Sir Selim.”

“That’s Maribel. The cow I was talking about before. How is it? Isn’t it pretty?”

    “….”

To Azadin it was just a common black cow.

“It seems cleaner than the other cows. It doesn’t look sick either.”

    “Right? I thought you knew.”

What on earth? Azadin wanted to ask that question but he coughed and approached Selim.

“Would you like a drink too?”

Selim offered Azadin a cup of tea.

It was just chopped hay boiled with oats but it didn’t look like something fit for human consumption.

“No I don’t think my digestive ability can keep up. I will decline. Rather Sir Selim.”

“I heard the story. You defeated Chashan right? That was amazing. Dwarf sorcerers aren’t easy to take.”

Azadin was able to easily subdue them but that was because Azadin was a herald clan specialized in killing magicians.

Azadin himself knew this so he did not let his guard down just because he had easily subdued Chadra Ogel.

“The residents are suffering more than anything. They are hatching Griffin eggs aren’t they?”

“We need more griffins to make a hippogriff.”

“Why don’t we just fly on a Griffin? Then the number of Griffins will be reduced and the damage to the residents will be reduced as well.”

“Listen Sir Azadin. Griffins have the body of a falcon and the back of a lion. They are not easy to tame and eat more than hippogriffs. On the other hand hippogriffs have the body of a falcon and the back of a horse but they are omnivorous and eat a lot of meat and the hippogriff is far superior in terms of ride quality. From maintenance costs ride quality and endurance! In every way the griffin is no match for the hippogriff!”

“It’s not a matter of comfort. Even if the hippogriff is a superior mount to the griffon the residents are suffering and tormenting during the process of making it?”

“That’s because they’re not used to it. Once they get used to it they’ll like it too.”

“How can you take responsibility if you don’t get used to it?”

“You only know one thing but you don’t know two. Azadin why do you think that I a Minotaur am a member of the Knights?”

As he spoke Sir Selim emptied his teapot and began to chew the grain and oats.

“…Oh I’m sorry. This tastes best when you chew it all.”

    “And you’re ruminating too?”

    “Wow…..”

He said all he could but he didn’t say the most important part. However Azadin could guess the rest of it without Selim saying anything.

“Could it be that you became a member of the Rescue Knights on the condition of raising a hippogriff?”

Then Selim nodded. It seemed that he was still chewing on the food in his mouth and could not speak.

“Yes. If you can raise it its value is incomparable to that of a horse… and the higher-ups would want it. But who asked for it?”

    Then Selim grinned and answered.

    “My patron.”

    “Who is it?”

    “Bishop Sehnat.”
