Night of the Soulless Heathens – 263

#263.Chadra’s Loser 1
The first thing Azadin did after taking control of Fireglyph was to investigate.
This task of investigating whether there are doppelgangers among the Fireguards regular guards and workers…
Before starting work the doppelgangers went into hiding first as information was leaked.
Although they failed to directly track down the doppelgangers the fact that so many doppelgangers had infiltrated the area shocked Fireglyph.
Azadin in conjunction with such investigations set about recovering the assets that Lord Hexenmayer had embezzled.
Lord Hexenmayer’s illegitimate children and the vested interests that clung to him protested but since the investigation into the doppelganger was conducted simultaneously no one could openly resist.
In just one week Azadin took control of all of Fireglyph’s assets and manpower.
And he used that authority to start reassigning personnel.
The task of relocating those who had been forced to live as lower-class people without any jobs in Fireglyph to Fort Vermillion began.
In addition we repaired the roads and formed additional patrol units to patrol each road allowing supply units to move more frequently.
We also began work on making the purchase price of the supply unit more realistic and transforming the cities under Fireglyph into competitive trading houses rather than simply exploiting them.
The soldiers and residents of Fort Vermilion naturally welcomed him with open arms.
“Oh my god! I can’t believe it!”
“You really let people go! I thought it was just empty words!”
Azadin had promised the people of Fort Vermillion that he would grow the fortress and make it a place where people could live rather than a penal colony where commerce could be fostered and where soldiers could live like human beings.
However even though he had set the grace period to be long Azadin himself did not know that visible results would appear this quickly.
‘I didn’t know I would be able to take control of Fireglyph so quickly. That’s why I was thinking of taking about half a year.’
But then a troublemaker appeared before Azadin.
*********
Sir Braham was a rare hospitaler-paladin from the Chadra Plateau and ranked higher than the leader of the expedition Sir Pavel.
He entered Fireglyph to assess the situation and formally requested a meeting with Sir Pavel.
The interview room was chosen to be the former office of Lord Hexenmayer and now the Fireglyph Chapter Master’s office. There Lord Pavel appeared accompanied by two apprentices Lord Izmilla and Lord Azadin.
“Hello Sir Pavel. Long time no see.”
“Sir Abraham. You look well-skinned.”
“That’s because I live in clean air and eat good food. Haha. By the way who are the handsome men and women next to me? Oh they must be the famous ones… Sir Izmilla and Sir Azadin.”

“Thank you for your kind words.”
Izmilla answered as such and Azadin looked silently at the dwarf smuggler Chashan behind Sir Braham.
“I understand that the investigation team’s investigation has already been completed… Sir Pavel. Don’t you think that the administration of Fireglyph should be led by someone who knows the Chadra Plateau well?”
“That’s why I’m assisting Sir Pavel.”
When Azadin came forward and spoke Sir Braham clicked his tongue bitterly.
“Yes. Sir Azadin of Fort Vermilion. How long have you been in Chadra? A month or two now?”
“Yes. It’s been about two months and ten days.”
“I can’t say I know everything about this diverse region. This is a land of legendary monsters ferocious wild magic and the blood of the hideous old gods. Everyone has their own way of surviving here and it would be troublesome for an outsider who doesn’t know the circumstances to arbitrarily judge them. That’s why… I’m suggesting that we form an advisory committee to work together to manage the Fireglyphs until a new Chapter Master is chosen.”
At first glance it seemed like a reasonable reason.
However this was no different from demanding that Azadin who had already taken possession of the Fireglyph give up what he had in his hands.
In addition the smuggling king Chashan was growing poppies and coca which were against the laws of the Knights Templar and selling them for profit.
It was obvious what would happen if the Fireglyph the passage connecting the Chadra Plateau and the Arangi Kingdom was given to such a person.
“It’s going well even now so is there really a need to set up a committee and waste the energy of the wise seniors in each region? Besides even if we do set up a committee it will probably be disbanded once a new chapter master is selected right?”
“Haha will a new Chapter Master be chosen that easily? Then there will be strife between factions within the Order over who should be promoted and who should be imprisoned. While they are drifting like that all sorts of external pressures will be applied to Fireglyph. My small loyalty is to prevent that. Please don’t let my loyalty be in vain.”
Sir Braham repeatedly requested the formation of a committee as he felt that the Chapter Master would not be chosen so easily due to the factional strife of the Knights.
‘Hmm. Well actually I’ve already established my goal of supplementing the Vermilion Fortress with human resources so I can just give in. I don’t want to open the way for the drug smuggler to do as he wants. But Sir Braham is quite good at talking. Perhaps that dwarf the smuggler king Chashan planned it in advance and carried it out?’
Azadin looked thoughtfully at Chashan who was manipulating the situation behind Sir Braham.
But then it happened.
Suddenly people’s screams were heard outside the window.
“Whoa!”
“Eww!”
And then something landed on the office terrace with a fluttering sound.
A hippogriff a monster with the upper body of an eagle and the lower body of a horse landed on the terrace.
And then a man got down from the hippogriff’s back.
“Hahaha! It’s so frustrating that you’re doing things without me! It’s so frustrating!”
“Three Selims.”
Not only Sir Pavel but also Sir Braham who had been speaking well until just a moment ago looked embarrassed.
That’s because the man who got off the hippogriff had a head and legs that were those of a cow.
Chadra Ogel Hippogriff Rider Selim was surprisingly a minotaur.
‘Wow the Fireglyph building is really sturdy. It even withstood a Minotaur flying at it from a hippogriff.’
Azadin looked at Lord Selim concerned about the durability of the building. He walked over pounding his chest and sat down without anyone asking him to.
The wooden chair creaks and screams miserably. The wooden chair which is clearly large enough to fit three people creaks as the Minotaur sits on it.
“Guests have arrived so why don’t you entertain them? Bring out some snacks.”
“Leaves tea?”
Sir Selim looked at Azadin as he was surprised to hear that.
It was as if he was asking why anyone would be surprised by something so trendy and universally liked like a used car.
“Oh right… That pretty-looking guy over there is an angel named Izmila or something. And the woman next to her is… Azadin a messenger?”

“I am Azaddin Lord Selim. Excuse me but would you mind refraining from flying into the sky? The building cannot support it.”
“Hot. Damn it. A soulless blasphemer like you is joining the Order of the Salvation. It seems the Order of the Salvation is seriously lacking in talent. Even though they say they accept anyone who believes in the three virtues without discrimination isn’t the Herald Clan a bit much? Of course a holy knight should be a role model for others possessing noble bloodlines universal virtues and loyalty! How dare they accept such a suspicious person.”
“….”
Azadin was momentarily speechless.
‘You’re a Minotaur yet you’re talking about bloodlines… Is being a Herald worse than being a Minotaur? Is being a Paladin a greater disqualification? Or is thinking like this itself a form of racism? Damn it. I pride myself on being quite open-minded. I can’t help but feel the urge to discriminate against this guy by calling him a Minotaur.’
Azadin thought seriously about that.
“Anyway you pretty guy! I’m against your controlling of Fireglyph! I came here to oppose you. Be thankful!”
“It’s not me but Sir Pavel the head of the investigation team…”
“Huh. Do you think my eyes are like a hole? It’s obvious that you have seized power. What kind of evil are you planning to do with that power?”
“….”
Azadin was embarrassed by the attitude of Lord Selim who was distrustful and quarrelsome towards him…
‘Oh I like this kid.’
I also strangely liked it.
Unlike that drug smuggling dwarf Iza was surprisingly one of the few true knights who held a loyal heart to the Knights Templar.
However that was why he was suspicious and distrustful of Azadin.
‘With this kind of atmosphere another Chadra Ogel will show up too.’
Sure enough a hippogriff suddenly started causing a ruckus on the terrace.
Looking out the window a falcon with a blue beak flew in and the hippogriff got excited and jumped around at the sight of the falcon.
The falcon dodged the hippogriff’s attack and then suddenly glowed and transformed into a mare with a large white mane.
When the hippogriff saw the mare and became even more excited he tried to turn back but the mare kicked with all her might and hit the hippogriff hard.
“Hey! Hey!”
When the hippogriff screamed Sir Selim the hippogriff rider also became angry.
The mare once again began to glow from her entire body and she transformed into a female elf with tattoos on her body. With her sharp eyes and her short thin body for an elf she looked haggard as if she had stayed up for several nights.
When she transformed into a mare she was a pure and clean horse but after the transformation she is still beautiful but she looks haggard and irritated which creates a great sense of dissonance.
She walked over buttoning up her loose-fitting dress and sat down at the table as well.
“Selim. I was in danger because of that horny hippogriff of yours.”
“I was here first but you came flying in so this isn’t a problem! Just come in through the door quietly. There’s no need to go to the trouble of hitting my pretty girl! You evil elf!”
“When you die that too is part of the natural cycle.”
“What? If our pretty one dies you will die by my hand too! Do you think that is part of the natural cycle?”
“I was trying to treat you but that kind of attitude won’t do.”
“…No of course we’re going to treat it since you ruined it. Our pretty one was surprised!”
At that time the smuggling king Chashan grumbled.
“Even if Sir Selim is a knight you are not a knight Sedrin. You have no reason to come here do you?”
“I was appointed by Hexenmayer as the forest keeper of the Black Soil Forest. If Hexenmayer has been purged then of course I should come. And you too don’t leave it to Braham but come forward yourself. Everyone knows about it anyway. I’m talking about Chadra Ogel’s evil reputation.”
‘I don’t know.’
Azadin thought so but did not say it out loud.
