Night of the Soulless Heathens – 233

#233. Northern Aragasa 4
As Azadin had guessed the force behind the attack on the pilgrim group was the Northern Emperor Cohen Lionaire.
“But wouldn’t it be better to keep it?”
“Fine. Even if we catch him we’ll have to keep watching him try to escape and we don’t have the luxury of that. It’s just tiring.”
Azadin said so and threw the tenth lieutenant’s longsword he was holding in his hand.
-Whoosh!
The longsword that had fallen on the road slid like a top and came to a stop in front of the sergeant’s feet.
The sergeant was speechless.
Is it true that Azadin is trying to free him rather than taking him prisoner?
“Don’t make me laugh! How can I live with my face held high after receiving such begging? Just take me as a prisoner!”
“Oh that’s a lot of work. The reason we don’t take prisoners is because we can’t manage them. Right now we’re having a hard time taking care of ourselves.”
“Then kill him!”
“The Northern Aragasa have a lot of self-deprecation. Or maybe they are suffering from group depression? I heard that the North doesn’t get enough sunlight. People become gloomy when they don’t get enough sunlight.”
“….”
No kidding the 10th Lieutenant was now in quite a dangerous situation.
It must not be known that the attack on the pilgrimage group was the work of the Northern Qi. Since Azadin had discovered the mastermind through his own mistake he could not let Azadin and his men live.
But does that mean I should attack the guy who released me to save me?
As with any race the Aragasa are a tribe that particularly values honor.
If Azadin had tried to kill him he would have happily fought him with all his might and if he had taken him prisoner he would have escaped and counterattacked whenever the opportunity arose.
But what if we just let it go like this?
“Fuck! I get it! I get it!”
The sergeant scratched his head and offered his sword to Azadin.
“I am the Yakut clan of the Ahaji tribe of Northern Aragasa! From now on I will join you!”
“what?”
The sectarian MacDougal who was unaware of the complicated circumstances of the Aragasas jumped up.
“What the heck are you talking about! This is ridiculous! This is ridiculous!”

But Azadin placed a hand on Zan’s shoulder.
“Okay. I’ve thought it through. Voluntary participation is welcome.”
“Damn. I like spontaneity.”
“Not voluntary? Then go home. I’ll let you go.”
“No! It’s voluntary! It’s voluntary!”
The Northern Aragasa’s tenth lieutenant Zan with a tearful expression insisted that his choice was voluntary.
*********
When Jan of the Northern Aragasa Yakut clan surrendered to Azadin his men immediately fled.
They will now report this to their superiors reorganize and come with all their might to destroy Zan and Azadin.
Above all Azadin found out that the Northern Qi was behind the attack on the pilgrims.
Of course this is a fact that will one day be known to the world.
Currently the Northern Qing Dynasty was planning to attack not only this pilgrimage group but also all other pilgrimage groups in order to take control of the Knights Templar and even kidnap the bishop to tear the Knights Templar organization apart.
If you do something this big it will get discovered someday but it can’t be now.
There was no way he could reveal his true colors so quickly and easily.
“You’re talking nonsense about finding out that the Northern Emperor is behind this to screw me over. You’re making a big mistake.”
“This is Azadin. He is the 108th messenger of the Emperor.”
Azadin smiled back at Jeanne. Then Camilla curious asked.
“Wait a minute. You said you were the first commander before? What was that?”
“I didn’t say anything wrong.”
“What? You said you didn’t say anything wrong?”
Then after hearing Azadin’s words Zan realized the situation.
“Damn it. I’ve been tricked. Are you really the herald of the sole emperor?!”
“okay.”
“I heard that the Hatir tribe was in serious internal strife due to the rebellion of Arael but how could all the Emperor’s messengers have fallen? This is the end of the messenger clan. So you are the first and 108th messenger?”
“Yes.”
“Oh thank goodness.”
“what?”
“That’s true. I was embarrassed because I couldn’t even match you but I thought that if you’re the sole messenger of the emperor then it’s not so bad. You must have been a very talented person even among the Hatir tribe right?”
“….”
Azadin smiled bitterly after hearing Zan’s words.
He had been treated as a half-penny among the messenger clan since childhood. However there was no need to mention that fact and cause ripples in Zan’s mind.
“Arael is my older sister. I am Arael’s only blood relative.”
“ah….”
In fact it was a completely unrelated story but Zan naturally felt relieved thinking that Azadin was just as powerful as Arael.
But then MacDougal who was listening to Azadin and Zan’s conversation started to grumble.
“It’s ridiculous that someone who surrenders and changes his flag cares about honor. There’s no need to wear a shameless shameless helmet.”
From his point of view he couldn’t understand the man who changed his flag like this. He thought of him as nothing but a dishonorable and shameless man.

“What? This kid?”
Zan glared at the officer in charge.
“He changed the flag because of honor. So you could say he’s an honorable person.”
Azadin explained the situation on Zan’s behalf.
“Aragasa is a group where family and bloodline are important. Since leaving home and coming to the continent of Hybris they are even more precious. So when fighting with people other than Aragasa it may be different but when fighting among Aragasa it is considered a civil war involving family and bloodline ties. Would it be easier to understand if I said that rebelling in a civil war is due to the commander’s lack of virtue?”
Azadin’s explanation was quite objective which gave a refreshing shock to Jeanne who had vaguely made the decision as Aragasa.
“Of course if this person was a high-ranking officer or commander the story would be different. However from the perspective of a junior officer he owed me a favor for his life. If he continued to stay in his organization he would have to forget the favor of life and turn his sword against me because of the orders from his superiors but he considered that dishonorable. That’s why he surrendered even when they offered to release him. No one would criticize him for ignoring such a shallow favor of life in the first place.”
“Ah. So…..”
After Azadin’s explanation everyone understood why Zan had surrendered to Azadin. Then Zan shook his head and warned.
“Don’t misunderstand. At the point of surrender I think I’ve repaid a lot of that shallow lifesaving favor. I don’t intend to stick around comfortably with you forever. If you’re lax I’ll escape.”
“That’s what makes it so cute.”
“Ugh.”
As Azadin spoke with a smile Jeanne shut her mouth tightly.
“By the way is it true that the Northern Emperor is behind this? Why is the Northern Emperor targeting me?”
Izmila wondered about that.
“I don’t know about that either.”
Zan refused to answer.
Although he surrendered to Azadin he had no intention of completely divulging information on Azadin’s behalf. He only intended to repay the favor owed and then escape.
“So in this group I’m the one with the most experience in making rational decisions and planning strategies. Don’t you all agree?”
Azadin asked his companions.
Of course everyone survived thanks to Azadin so even if I had ten mouths I had nothing to say. However the sergeant MacDougal objected.
“No! Sir Ismilla must be our leader!”
“Because you’re the bishop’s illegitimate child?”
“No. How dare you accuse me of something like that!”
“Then you know something. Why?”
“I don’t know. I don’t know but let me say this. The apprentice knights of the Order are also noble and righteous beings. The most noble of the current statuses here is Sir Izmilla so she should naturally be the leader of this group. That is the providence of the gods and if not and if an impious person like you gives us instructions and we follow those instructions our faith and sincerity will be questioned later when we are interrogated.”
“What do you think about that?”
“I will delegate command to you.”
Izmila the person concerned handed over command to Azadin.
“Then I will make the decision as the leader. Of course I will respect each member. So don’t ask Zan here any questions he can’t answer. Even if he doesn’t answer directly we can gain a lot just by having him with us.”
“….”
In fact Azadin easily figured out that the Northern Emperor was behind them. Even if he tried to provoke Zan by provoking him it would only bring forward the point where he thought he had repaid the favor of saving his life.
‘This kid is skilled.’
Azadin had already been a skilled shaman and had been able to brew up a magic of regeneration that was difficult for humans to use by taking the sorcerer Shati with him.
Perhaps if Shati were here she would be genuinely concerned about the glass that had its nose pierced by Azadin.
“Okay. Then why don’t you get some shut-eye now? We’ll have to move at night. Camilla. Did you scavenge the corpses for food?”
“Oh okay.”
“Let’s share it and then get some sleep.”
Azadin said so and laid out a plank near the prisoner carriage and made a place to sleep.
*********
When night fell Azadin opened his eyes.
“Did you all get a good rest?”
“My younger brother.”
The thief Camilla answered thus.
It seemed that except for the half-orc Countach everyone else was so nervous that they couldn’t even rest properly.
Azadin rolled up the blanket he had used to cover himself while sleeping tied it to his backpack and threw it away.
-Kururuk….
A translucent ghost goat suddenly appeared caught Azadin’s thrown backpack on its head and lifted it up onto its back. The backpack hung on the saddle loop.
“What is this?!”
“It’s my ride. I can only call it at night.”
Azadin said so and smiled bitterly.
This ghost goat is a morphed version of Arael’s voice and as a ghost it can only be summoned at night.
Although he was able to respond quickly to Izmilla’s call because his speed was as fast as flying in the sky it was not a good look for others. To the eyes of the common people who were weak in superstition he would appear to be a monster riding on a ghost.
As expected McDonald’s pointed that out.
“You’re really planning on riding that? Are you planning on killing all the innocent people passing by with a heart attack? It’s scary to even look at. Where on earth did you learn such evil skills? Is it because you’re a messenger? Even if it’s a living thing you openly use the magic to bind and control the dead spirits.”
“It’s not necromancy it’s an artificial spirit. It doesn’t damage any living being. If anything has been damaged it’s… a part of the soul of the master who created this artificial spirit.”
Azadin said this while feeling Arael’s traces remaining inside the ghost goat.
Of course what the officer said makes sense. It’s the perfect sight for people walking down the street at night to die of heart attacks.
But at present they were in no position to be picky about what was hot and what was cold.
“Load all your luggage onto the mountain goat. Let’s go.”
Put all your luggage on the mountain goat and move as lightly as possible. If you don’t do that you will never be able to shake off your pursuers.
