#229. The Passion of the Pilgrims 4

Since the emperor’s gold coins were circulated at a high price in the market many people thought that by using the emperor’s gold coins they could command a messenger to bring them all the wealth and honor of the world like some stupid devil from an old tale.

“As our title of Herald of the Emperor suggests we are merely heralds. We have done all we can to convey the voice and will. If you wish to use us more bring us more gold.”

    “that….”

    Izmila was embarrassed.

Although she had given the Emperor’s gold it was something she had received from her patron and could not obtain additional money now.

“I see there are no more gold coins. Then I guess I will end here as the Emperor’s messenger.”

The young man named Azadin said this and drew his longsword.

    “uh?”

The officer was perplexed as he looked at the longsword the young man had drawn.

    “why?”

“It’s a three-ceramite longsword. It’s a sword that only the Knights can obtain so why is it in the hands of the Emperor’s messenger? Could it be a counterfeit? It looks clearly real.”

    “What is that?”

When the thief asked the officer answered.

“The ceramite longsword is an alchemy metal made by mixing silver and angel blood. It is excellent for destroying evil and in the hands of a righteous knight it emits heavenly flames that burn evil to the bone. Also the blade has the power of a living organism so even if it is damaged it will gradually heal itself. The strength and sharpness of the blade itself are said to be inferior to Azure Steel and it is slightly duller than a well-made steel sword but thanks to its self-repair ability and heavenly flames it is highly regarded as a weapon. Above all it is a weapon that is manufactured and possessed only by our knight corps so not just any knight can have it. In the history of the knight corps less than 150 ceramite longswords have been made so far.”

    “….”

After hearing the explanation Azadin examined the ceramite longsword in his hand. He had not been impressed by the sharpness or strength of the blade but was this really such an excellent sword?

“Thank you for the detailed explanation. Then shall we join together as brothers of the Rescue Knights next time?”

    “What?!”

    “What does that mean?”

“That’s true. I also want to join the Rescue Knights.”

    “….”

    “what!?”

The Emperor’s messenger MacDougal and the apprentice knight Izmilla were astonished at the absurd remarks he made.

“You’re joining the Rescue Knights? Are you talking about that?”

    “Yeah. Why not?”

“The Knights of the Salvation Order is not a place where just anyone can join! It is a gathering of honorable and righteous knights.”

The officer spoke with great effort. Then a thief struck the target next to him.

“It’s so ugly that you dragged in the rags of the village and even criminals from prison and now you’re insisting that this isn’t a place that just anyone can enter.”

    “that….”

The mouth of the eloquent man was silenced because he was talking too much.

You were not meant to be recruited into the Rescue Knights but to be used as serfs.

    I couldn’t say that.

The reason why the pilgrims brought people on regular pilgrimages was to recruit the Knights Templar.

People who lack the skills have no choice but to become serfs working on farms owned by the Knights Templar. It’s not like you can say from the beginning that they were being taken away as slaves because there was a shortage of workers.

“Why do you want to become a rescue worker?”

    Izmila became curious and asked.

“I have heard that anyone can become a member of the Order of the Knights of Salvation if they are sincere under the virtues of wisdom courage and mercy. Ever since I heard the story of the three archangels coming down to save the people of this land and exhausting all their powers I have admired them and wanted to become a member of the Order of the Knights of Salvation. Why?”

    “No that’s….”

A legend that even rescuers now don’t believe in came out of the mouth of a soulless blasphemer absurdly.

Even though Izmila didn’t know much about the ways of the world Azadin’s words sounded more like mockery than sincerity.

    “Oh what should I do?”

“Absolutely not Sir Ismilla. The interest is….”

He is a soulless blasphemer. Those words were on the tip of Moon Jang-gwan’s tongue but he barely managed to hold back his words.

If you think about it without this man’s help there’s no way for the pilgrims to return alive. What if they refuse right away and the man turns around and attacks?

“How about we join the pilgrimage group first? You are the leader of the group now right?”

The thief interrupted the conversation between Izmila and Azadin.

“Even if you join the pilgrimage group you can decide whether you become a knight later right?”

    “That kind of thing.”

Izmila was taken aback by the thief’s statement that she had become the leader of the pilgrimage group.

She was still inexperienced in every way. And now she was the leader of this small group that was shameful to even call a pilgrimage group.

“Oh I understand. Then Azadin of the Herald Clan. We will accept you into our pilgrimage group for now.”

Izmila was suddenly forced to make this risky choice as the temporary leader of the pilgrimage group.

‘Haa. The future is really bleak.’

Azadin felt embarrassed as he looked at the distrustful expression on the apprentice’s face as he accepted him.

    A soulless blasphemer.

The weight of this word hits me painfully again.

The Aragasas are complete strangers and also untouchables in this Hybris.

Even in the Royal Church which serves the Yaegas God Kings and on the opposite side of the Church the Salvation Knights Aragasa is not treated very well.

‘I thought the Knights Templar would be better off since they were rivals of the King’s Church but I guess they are just like the Hybris. It looks like the news about Bthuma hasn’t even been fully reported yet and yet it’s already like this.’

The hostility towards the Aragats in Bthuma is so great that it is not well known that they committed massacres and joined hands with evil forces of evil to commit terrible sorcery.

Even in this situation would I be able to join the Rescue Knights and work with them?

    Should I just give up?

Wouldn’t it be better to return the ceramite longsword you received from Sir Planck and just pretend not to know about it?

‘But if I do that? What happens after that?’

Only one wretched soul remains who lost Aldis and caused Arael to die.

What was Arael’s intention in having Sir Planck and Azadin meet?

Azadin put his ceramite longsword back into its scabbard thinking of his sister with whom he had never had much to say.

“Then I take it that you have permitted my entry Sir Ismilla. Since I have done this in your name I hope you will keep this promise on your honor.”

“If you uphold the dignity of the Knights and fulfill your mission then yes. But where did you get that ceramite longsword?”

“What if you ask that of Lord Izmilla? The opponent is the unscrupulous Emperor’s messenger the demon of gold coins the soulless blasphemer. Surely he must have killed and taken a good and noble knight right? Only the knights recognized by the order can possess the ceramite longsword.”

The sergeant MacDougal whispered to Ismilla so that Azadin could not hear. However Azadin had a good ear and could hear everything.

“But I was the only one in our pilgrimage group with a ceramite longsword. I doubt any other knights nearby would have one.”

Azadin who saw Izmilla and the scribe whispering meaningless words said something to dispel their suspicions.

“I received this from my late master. It’s not like what you think.”

    “ah.”

“Let’s get ready to leave. It’s not good to stay here. Let’s move.”

    “All right.”

Izmila felt embarrassed when she realized that Azadin had been listening to their whispers.

‘I guess you have some sense of shame since you know how to be ashamed. But that officer seems to know something.’

Azadin looked at the herald who seemed to know more than the apprentice knight.

    *********

As dawn broke the fog began to clear.

Traces of terrible massacres were everywhere. Most of them were runaway convicts and peasants who had been taken away by the pilgrims as slaves.

The knights all seemed to have escaped successfully perhaps because they were on horseback.

And among them were the corpses of the attackers.

    “This is…..”

Izmila found the dead body carrying a bundle of javelins.

A small man with a cleanly severed neck lies lying on the ground. Could it be that he was the one who fired the javelin?

    “It was a wear rat.”

As he said this Azadin searched through the man’s corpse and took out a seal. It was the holy symbol of Mezeri the god of the Wear Rat among the Kurt gods.

“Cultists? Why would cultists attack a pilgrim group?”

“Rather than that they’re probably assassins disguised as cultists. It’s easy to frame them in case of an emergency. Well these guys are actually cultists but if you give them money you can hire cultists right?”

While Azadin was speaking the thief was searching through the corpse taking what he needed and handing it over to his sister.

Seeing her carefully collecting and searching the corpse every moment I think I know what she ate and how she ended up in prison and ended up here.

    Azadin asked the thief.

“But you guys. You don’t seem to be part of the Knights Templar so what are your names?”

“Oh me? My name is Camilla. My sister is Countach.”

    “My name is Bernard.”

“Yes. Nice to meet you. By the way why do you think this raid took place?”

    The thief Camilla snickered.

“Looking at it this young lady seems to be quite valuable. It seems like they attacked the pilgrim group targeting this young lady.”

“Did you try to kill me?”

“No rather than trying to kill me…”

“Wait a minute! That’s an important event for the Order why are you telling the outside world about it?! You must not forget that you are still an uneducated and unruly convict! This is why the Order needs to be educated! A convict who has no shame in coveting other people’s property is now openly talking about the Order’s secrets!”

MacDougal was furious and tried to silence the bandit but then the bandit’s younger brother the half-orc Countach stepped forward.

“You swore at your sister? You swore at her right?”

    “Oh no this…..”

MacDougal tried to reply but the half-orc’s fist flew at him before he could.

“You bastard who curses at my older sister! I’ll punish you!”

    But then Azadin intervened.

    “Sleep! Stop it!”

Azadin took the half-orc’s fists that seemed like they could shatter rocks with both hands and kicked MacDougal with his feet to increase the distance between the two.

-The blue and white pine tree of the flower-bird-wind-moon Kajashae.

It didn’t have the same power as before because the grimoires seething within Azadin’s body had been erased but it was still enough to control the power of the ignorant half-orc.
