Night of the Soulless Heathens – 219

#219. Herald of Destruction 4
Ismail hurried out of the Btooma castle carrying Azadin on his back.
Arrows and magic were flying from behind but thanks to Medium blocking them I didn’t look back and moved forward mindlessly increasing the distance between me and them. If I looked back I would feel like my feet would stop.
And it wasn’t a situation where I could look back.
-Kurururung!
The building next to the road collapsed and fell on Ismail. Ismail carrying Azadin on his back avoided it with all his might and looked around.
-Heeeek!
The sound of horses was heard from somewhere.
“Ah… damn it!”
Ismail who ran to see if there was any chance was in despair.
A horse was crying with its stomach ripped open and its entrails spilling out.
The lower half of its body had been transformed into a strange monster perhaps influenced by the Nether and was eating the parts that had been a part of it until just now. The monster still connected to the horse was eating its own flesh but the horse which should have died long ago was unable to die and was writhing in pain howling.
Ismail turned his head at the horrible sight and started walking again.
The light of the King’s Flower somehow emitted by Azadin and the Emperor’s voice sent the Nether’s messengers back to the other world but there were still traces of their descent here.
And… there were also Nagas.
“Krrrrrr!”
A sea serpent Naga tribe wandered around with spears and discovered Ismail.
“…hmm.”
Ismail rather remained calm. The sea serpents had formed an alliance with Aragatha and now might be the opportunity to receive support from them in the form of green magic.
“Hey. Can you treat someone injured? We’re Aragasa!”
“Krrrr…..”
But these Nagas not knowing human language very well just scratched their heads.
Ismail looked around and saw behind them a naga wizard lying dead under the rubble of a collapsed building. It seemed that the naga wizard who was the leader of this group had been swept away by the earthquake and died.
“Damn it. What about horses? Have you seen any healthy horses around here?”
While Ismail was gesturing and talking to the Nagas he caught sight of one of the Nagas moving stealthily out of his sight. He took a step back and caught him in his sight.
“what are you doing?”

Of the remaining Nagas the one who seemed to have a relatively high position grumbled and shook the claw on his neck.
“The alliance with Aragasa… is over. You failed to keep your promise. The great kings did not come. You failed.”
“That’s… not true. Even now when I look at the castle….”
“We’re retreating. Aragasa is finished anyway. There’s not much left. But before that….”
The Nagas’ eyes flashed. They were aiming for Ismail.
Ismail put down Azadin and searched the floor for anything that could be used as a weapon. However all he could find was a piece of timber that had been part of a window frame from a collapsed building.
It was at that moment that the Nagas were laughing and were about to attack Ismail.
-Pfft!
An arrowhead pierced the chest from the Nagas’ back.
“Huh?!”
Behind the Nagas a figure appears and disappears from sight moving between buildings. As he does so he fires arrows with incredible power.
“Huh! Aragasa!”
“Let’s run away!”
As the Nagas dispersed an Aragasa messenger descended. He was a member of the Arael tribe and one of the four members of the Flower Bird and Moon. He was the Indim of the Moon.
“All of you?”
“Azadin is alive! Thank goodness.”
The Indim of the Moon looked at Azadin with delight ignoring Ismail and felt his pulse. He put his finger on his neck and clicked his tongue.
“You’re so weak. What happened to the little throne?”
“The throne has been purified. However… the afterglow of the Reaper still remains and it is incredibly powerful. And Sion Etar has killed Hathir.”
Although he was the one who killed Hatir Ismail claimed that it was Zion Etar who killed him because it was Zion Etar’s order.
However Indim was not particularly surprised by Ismail’s words. Did he expect Zion Etar to kill the leader Hatir?
“Good. Even though he was called the Azadin of Muan he is indeed Kazas’ disciple and indeed Arael’s younger brother. To have accomplished such a difficult task.”
“…It’s amazing.”
Ismail felt resentment towards Indim for disparaging Azadin.
Although Ismail also did not like Azadin very much he did not like Indim who belittled his obvious achievements without realizing how strong dedicated and noble his spirit was.
“I will take Azadin. What will you do? Will you serve Arael? Or will you leave?”
“If I serve Arael… what will happen?”
“Aragasa is finished now. Oh what I mean is that the Aragasa led by the Senate is finished. But Arael-sama… um no. You leave. Later when the world is stable Arael-sama will raise Aragasa again so we’ll see then. It’s a bit difficult right now.”
Indim said so and lifted Azadin up. But Ismail had no intention of leaving Azadin.
“Can you save him? At least we have to see if he lives or dies…”
He is the man whom Medium risked his life to save. However because he was unconscious he did not know what Medium sacrificed for him.
If Azadin had not woken up and told Midiam that he had risked his life to save him and that he had probably died…
Of course he was eager to go back right away and see what had become of Medium but Ismail decided not to do that.
Even if he goes back he can’t save Medium. No if he does Medium’s chances of survival will decrease.
‘If there are no servants or other Aragasa left at the scene Sion Etar’s personality may lead her to pretend not to see the incident and cover it up.’
To cover up the fact that Midiam was openly rebelling all that was needed was to kill all the servants and witnesses who were present and whom Aragasa and Sion Etar were not confident in completely controlling.
Although this is Ismail’s hopeful expectation Zion Etar is someone who would do such a thing. There is no reason to go back here and increase the number of witnesses.

“…Okay follow me.”
Indim picked up Azadin and said.
“If you can keep up!”
At that moment Indim flew forward. Unlike Ismail he lifted Azadin and moved lightly quickly gaining distance.
“Ugh!”
Ismail seeing this was indignant at his own foolishness.
The reason Indim doesn’t want Ismail to come to their quarters is obvious: Arael is injured.
Perhaps if we take Azadin like this a young boy like Ismail will forget his very existence.
So what should I do? Should I go back to Medium right now and see if I can save her or wait and see what happens to her fate?
Or should we pursue Azadin and wait for his fate?
“Damn it. You’re looking down on me!”
Ismail followed Indim down the road. How long did he run? Ismail suddenly looked back and muttered.
“This is…..”
Ismail remembered this place. It was the entrance to the royal palace built to highlight the grandeur of the road leading to the palace by arranging identical buildings on both the left and right.
The earthquake had left buildings collapsed and the ground cracked leaving new traces of destruction on top.
‘Is this where Arael and the elders fought?’
Ismail absentmindedly climbed up the outer wall of the building that had tilted due to the earthquake and looked around.
And then I took a breath.
“Huh…..”
The traces of terrible destruction were immediately apparent.
“Aragasa is finished.”
I didn’t know it when I came out of the palace but when I turned my gaze towards the palace right here where Arael unleashed her power I could tell right away.
The corpses of the Aragasas were strewn everywhere. This gave an idea of how strong the power Arael had unleashed must have been.
Ironically the army of the Kingdom of Bthuma did not inflict much damage on Aragasa.
It was internal strife that caused damage to Aragasa. The fight between the Arael tribe and the Senate led to the destruction of Aragasa.
“…But why does Arael want Azadin?”
Suddenly a question occurred to me.
Of course I know very well that Azadin’s abilities are great.
However it is questionable whether the current Azadin can survive. Even if he does it is clear that he will become a cripple unless he is revived by pouring in a tremendous amount of recovery magic or unless the Master of the Eight Thrones sheds his own blood to revive him.
‘The Lord of the Eight Thrones. Hmm no way.’
Ismail shook his head.
“Let’s keep chasing.”
Ismail began to move cautiously in the direction where Indim’s presence had disappeared.
*********
“Ugh…..”
Azadin opened his eyes because someone had slapped him in the face causing his entire body to feel like it was going to break apart.
“Are you awake?”
“Coolook… This Indim?”
Azadin gasped for breath.
It’s so cold. I’m shivering from losing so much blood.
I feel dizzy and like my whole body is going to break apart.
And before my eyes something like a flame flickers and sprinkles light from the sky.
Is it a lamp? If so is it because the ship is shaking now?
But he couldn’t be sure. The dizziness was so severe that he couldn’t tell if it was really inside the ship or if Azadin himself felt the shaking even though he was on flat ground.
Surprisingly even in this situation green magic was activated again within Azadin’s body and the regenerative power that Shati had given him was trying to heal his wounds.
However right now the vitality itself is lacking. Even the vitality that can be drawn up through regeneration has been depleted.
With such serious injuries it’s unlikely he’ll live long.
Even if a wound seems to heal and recover in the short term it will eventually crack and break down from that point. Just as the part of a pot that a soldering iron has repaired is the first to wear out so is the human body.
“Did you save me?”
When Azadin asked that Indim snorted.
“No the boy who was your apprentice.”
“Ismail? Ugh….”
Feeling a severe headache Azadin laid his head down again. He couldn’t even control his head.
But if you don’t understand the situation now…
“Hatir? Aldis? How much time has passed?”
“It’s difficult to answer so ask them one by one.”
“….”
“First of all a week has passed.”
“A week?”
“You’ve been unconscious for a while. I gave you some sugar and medicine and cleaned up your mess. I appreciate that.”
“….”
Azadin examined his body.
Both arms have torn muscles and ligaments. But ironically the left arm which was cut off below the wrist is now in better shape.
The right arm that was hit by Zion Etar’s arrow was split vertically and was barely attached.
Besides that his entire body was in shambles. Recovery seemed impossible unless a miracle occurred.
Azadin turned his head away. He could not bear to look at his own appearance which was too hideous.
