Night of the Soulless Heathens – 216

#216. Herald of Destruction 1
Azadin got up. He didn’t know what was left to rise again after killing Aldis but he couldn’t leave Hatir behind.
“You say she was a foolish daughter? She had to fight against her will because of her responsibility to you and her clan. Because of your incomprehensible atrocities!”
“Are you blaming me for Aldis’ death? You’re the one who killed him.”
“Damn it! You should have compromised! If you had just usurped the throne I wouldn’t have known. If you had….”
Azadin would not have stopped his clan.
He simply left the clan and would not have killed Kazas and Aldis with his own hands.
“That’s because Aragasa will be destroyed if we don’t do harsh selective training. Aragasa’s abilities will be diluted and disappear. However the population will not increase because of the selection. If it’s difficult to increase our population we should reduce their population.”
“Is increasing and decreasing the number of people a joke? Those who say such things so calmly deserve to perish! For the sake of everyone in this world it would be better for Aragasa to perish Hathir! If it’s Aragasa that you lead!”
“But in my view you are the same. I do this for what I believe in and haven’t you killed someone you love with your own hands for what you believe in?”
It was certainly as Hatir said. The realization that he had killed Aldis came over Azadin.
“Ugh!”
As my anger grows I start to feel dizzy.
I lost too much blood. Even if I received the King’s healing magic the regeneration magic still remained in my body so even if my regeneration power was activated the anemia would not be cured right away.
Hathir raised his black steel sword when he saw Azadin gasping for breath.
“I never thought that the child of Acre I picked up that day would cause me so much trouble. But now it’s over Azadin.”
Hathir took up his sword to kill Azadin but there was still fear in his eyes.
He is the guy who defeated himself and even defeated Aldis. Even though he looks so injured and exhausted that he can’t even kill a bug it’s possible that it’s a trick.
Even if the situation were reversed and it was Azadin I would have been suspicious. This is because the Aragasas were trained from childhood to naturally perform all kinds of tricks.
“Kazas has created a difficult guy. Why did he put so much effort into raising a guy who could have just been raised roughly?”
Hathir took out his bow and tried to shoot but his quiver was empty. Instead he took Aldis’ spear cut off the shaft and hung it on his bow. The spear was unfletched but at this close range it was more than enough to hit.
Azadin was unable to dodge Hatir who was aiming for him right in front of his eyes. Anemia weighed heavily on his limbs.
That was when.
-Bang!
Suddenly a large arm appeared behind Hatir.
The Nether’s reaper materialized and burst out of the earth.

“no?!”
Hatir shot his arrow backwards at Azadin and jumped forward to avoid the arm.
Aldis’ spear struck his arm but only slightly and as the veins pulsed along the Reaper’s arm the spear shattered into pieces.
“Idiot! I am not the enemy!”
As Hatir spoke the arm of the messenger mercilessly spit out poison at him. It was a terrible poison that even burned black the silk curtains that decorated the palace of Bthuma.
However even though he survived a fatal injury the leader of the Herald Clan is still a man of considerable power.
“Are you still just a beast that can’t communicate… Ararat!”
In a hurry Hathir used the Emperor’s magic.
The sword of light Ararat swung horizontally slicing off the arm of the god of death and cutting through the pouring darkness.
In mythology a giant sword of light cuts off the arm of a god a scene that can be called the glory of a god. Even to Azadin who has no good feelings toward Hatir it was a magnificent sight.
The Grim Reaper’s arm is cut off blood spurts out like a fountain light flickers all over his body and soon his entire arm burns up.
“Did you get hurt?!”
As Hatir spoke the ground split apart and countless arms shot out. Each arm was as big as a large tree and the sight of them was chilling. A dreary evil that would drive a normal person crazy just by looking at them emanated from the arms.
-The lightning of the Holy Light!
Hathir cast the Emperor’s magic again sending lightning bolts of light down in all directions. The lightning bolts fell in a chain reaction causing explosions and overwhelming the Reapers.
“….”
Azadin was looking at Hatir’s back which was defenseless as she fought the reaper.
Now that I’ve gotten used to the dizziness caused by the anemia I can just swing my weapon and harm Hathir.
But something seems odd about attacking in the current situation.
Hatir is clearly responsible for the fall of his clan as Aldis and Kazas along with many others died while serving him.
It’s hateful.
If only this guy had come to his senses Azadin wouldn’t have been fighting with Kazas or Aldis. I want to blame everything on Hatir and kill him.
But Azadin’s conscience did not allow him to surprise someone who was fighting the Reaper at this moment.
‘What the hell is conscience….’
Azadin sat up astonished at his own stubbornness.
“I will cleanse the throne! You will have no complaints Hathir!”
“You… That was made by Arael? Can you trust Arael?”
“I don’t know!”
As he said this Azadin took out a grimoire made from a copy of the New King’s Book that Arael had handed over.
The world was filled with darkness but this book of magic alone was emitting a pure white light dazzlingly illuminating its surroundings.
Of course Azadin didn’t know it was dazzling because he had no eyes but when he saw this light he could at least tell that Arael wasn’t doing any evil tricks.
“Huh!”
But as Azadin approached the Quartz Throne the Nether messengers began to interfere.
Aldis’s body rose.
*********
The summer cicadas were chirping loudly.
“The Nether’s reapers are higher-dimensional beings. They are truly other-dimensional beings whose perception is completely different from ours.”

Kazas spoke thus and spoke a little of the Nether language. With just that the insect contained within the vial began to change.
It wasn’t just the bugs that began to change. Kazas’s skin which spoke the language of the Nether also changed.
Something sprouts up and starts to move wriggling like a bug.
Kazas took out a small blade made from broken obsidian and cut his own flesh cutting it open. He put it in a glass bottle and the mutated bugs and the bugs that had grown from Kazas’ body started fighting each other causing the glass bottle to crack.
“Master! I will escape!”
“yes?”
Kazas opened his palm and slammed the mouth of the bottle. The inside of the bottle was filled with blood and both insects died.
“omg.”
As a child Azadin was gripped by the sight. He was in awe of the terrifying power of the Nether language its terrifying and evil power.
“Who wrote this Nether language?”
“It is the slave of the god of death.”
“yes?”
“Just as we do not understand the nature of the messengers the messengers are also difficult to understand because we are too small and insignificant. That is why there are those who voluntarily offer themselves to the messengers and become their subordinates. The language of the Nether is what they recorded of the knowledge they understood…”
Kazas smiled bitterly.
“It is an act of offering one’s knowledge and soul to the god of death. It is a destruction worse than death.”
“But there are followers of the Nether right? Why do they worship such a horrible thing?”
“Because we will reach the age of Jupiter someday.”
“?”
“You may not understand but in big cities there are tall spires of buildings that are more than ten stories high. When a spire catches fire people are trapped on the rooftops. When they see the flames engulfing them they often get so scared that they throw themselves into the flames instead.”
“ah.”
“Even things like spears are like that. When they are cornered by a beast like a tiger and think there is no way to escape there are those who run towards it as if possessed offer their necks to the beast and die. People who do not understand magic think that beasts use sorcery to bewitch people but a mere beast would not use magic. It is just that those who are heartbroken in the face of such great despair cannot even resist and so they actively choose self-destruction.”
“This is terrible.”
“If you lose your fighting spirit you will surrender to despair. So no matter what happens don’t lose your fighting spirit. I want to say that but… I’m also ridiculous. I’m not in a position to say that to you.”
“You’re not in a position to do so?”
“I have already lost my star.”
“yes?”
It was a difficult sound to understand but Azadin had been taught by Aldis so he could vaguely understand what the stars meant.
“Can’t we just find a new one?”
“Well.”
Kazas laughed weakly after hearing Azadin’s words.
“Now it’s time to shoot your bow you stupid disciple.”
“yes?”
“I caught some goblins nearby and had them make arrows. The reed field here is perfect for making reed arrows. If I keep shooting and shooting until the reed field is completely gone won’t you be able to master the bow even though you haven’t yet?”
“…Are you talking about this field of reeds?”
Azadin was terrified as he looked at the vast expanse of reeds.
The bow is so strong that even if you shoot only 50 arrows your limbs will tremble and your face will turn yellow like jaundice and you are telling me to shoot all of these reed fields with arrows and destroy them.
“If you lose your fighting spirit you will succumb to despair. Have fighting spirit Azadin.”
“….”
The cicadas were chirping loudly.
*********
Azadin held the bow with his bruised left arm and recalled the memories of that day.
In Aldis’ case unlike other Nether followers he did not voluntarily surrender to the approaching despair. However falling under the power of the reaper and becoming a follower while still a fresh corpse is a terrible destruction in its own right.
“Azadin?”
That which had taken over Aldis’ body called Azadin with Aldis’ voice.
At that moment Azadin could understand why people threw themselves into the flames why they threw themselves into endless despair.
I want to believe.
Aldis is alive.
Even if she were a revenant or a vampire or something like that consumed by evil energy I felt like I would willingly surrender to this darkness as long as her soul remained her.
But even in this situation Azadin fired an arrow at Aldis.
Certainly both Kazas and Aldis raised Azadin too well. When despair that would break his fighting spirit looms before his eyes Azadin reflexively resists.
Perhaps this is a mechanism of action that Kazas planted in hopes that Azadin would overcome the despair he felt.
