Night of the Soulless Heathens – 198

#198. Golden King 4
The Aragatsas all recognized the famous Azadin.
However Azadin did not know who she was. However judging by her age she must have been a messenger long before Azadin and was recruited by Manza-Zadek.
‘If you show up and say you don’t know something it seems like you’re picking a fight.’
Suddenly I wondered how she lived and why she served Manja-Zadek.
Did she also swear allegiance to the Golden King after learning the secret of the Emperor’s assassination that Manja-Zadek spoke of and the true intentions of the Aragasas? With what kind of mindset would she serve such a broken Golden King?
But Karchen was reluctant to accept Azadin.
“As Aragasa I am much more senior than you. Keep that in mind. But to receive a ban directly from the king….”
Azadin himself did not know what rank the Golden Messenger an official of Btuma held but judging from the reactions of his brother and Karchen who said that he was the captain of the guard he could tell that it was a fairly high rank.
“So who are these people with you? Are they your subordinates?”
“Yes.”
Shati answered immediately and took a humble attitude.
Scott shrugged.
“You could say he’s the captain’s faithful companion.”
“Yes. Nagae Okrani that’s an interesting combination.”
Both Shatina and Scott were caught disguising themselves as humans. What’s even more surprising is that they were allowed to enter the vicinity of the palace despite knowing their true identities.
But it may be that Karchen is trying to take advantage of Azadin’s weakness.
In fact a cold murderous aura was now directed at Azadin from various directions. Armed men were aiming at Azadin from beyond the awnings of the wall.
“So I ask you. Which side are you on? A member of the Senate? Or a traitor? Have you come on some mission from your sister? What tricks did you use to please the king so much?”
“Do I please the king?”
“Yes. Otherwise there’s no way you could get the ban. That’s….”
Karchen was about to speak about the greatness of the Golden Lion but then closed his mouth. It seemed that he had sensed that Azadin did not know the details of the greatness of the Bthuma Golden Lion.
“I could treat you as an enemy spy right now and deal with you.”
“The Senate’s messengers are coming to assassinate the Golden King and you want to waste your energy fighting an innocent person like me before that?”
As Azadin mentioned other messengers Karchen’s eyes wavered. It seemed that Azadin’s words had hit the mark.
The ones who know the fear of the messenger the best are the Aragasa their own people. They know how harsh the selection process for a messenger is and how dangerous and difficult the missions given to them after becoming a messenger are.

Those messengers are coming to attack.
Even though they are the same Aragasa they have become vassals of the Golden King and have lived like ordinary people while receiving a salary. So they have to deal with the active messenger who is brimming with energy. Are they going to waste their energy by dealing with Azadin who is also the active messenger now?
‘You’re still afraid aren’t you?’
“Anyway I’m the one who planned and established the security operation so no matter what you become you have to follow my orders. Understood? And since we’re still suspicious of you don’t come within 200 steps of the King.”
“How do you provide security from a 200-step radius? And if the opponent is the same Aragasa they must have prepared for a Black River Battle. Do you have any countermeasures for that?”
“We also prepared for the Heukgang War.”
“That is not an answer to the king’s question about security…”
“I also made a shield out of black steel. The slaves will carry it and protect the king.”
“A shield made of black steel? That’s amazing. Then could you supply me with some black steel warfare?”
“Don’t make me laugh. We worked so hard to get the arrows and now we’re giving them to someone whose identity is unknown. There’s no law that says you can’t shoot the king with those arrows.”
“Why did you become loyal to Manza-Zadek? Did he really lift the curse of service?”
Rather than blaming himself Azadin was curious as to why they followed Manza-Zadek.
“No I’m talking and you’re asking me that question out of the blue… Are you really curious about that?”
“yes.”
“….”
Karchen was taken aback by Azadin’s unexpected reaction.
“Did he lift the curse of service? Yes. That’s why I’m alive. And he told me that the one who put the curse of service was not the emperor but the Senate. Rather than becoming a dog of the Senate and working like a dog without getting paid properly it’s best to earn money under the Golden King. You too…”
Karchen tried to explain the joy and legitimacy of working under the Golden King but then closed his mouth.
The position of the Golden Messenger is that of a representative of the king. It is not a position given to just anyone. I don’t know what tricks Azadin used but it is clear that he really did catch Manja-Zadek’s fancy.
This was because if a guy like this decided to rise up under Manja-Zadek he would surely become his political enemy.
“I don’t trust you so get out of here and don’t bother the guards. Or go get your older sister Arael.”
“You are expecting something from Arael.”
“Yes. The Senate has already seized the throne of Korasar. And if they can seize Bthuma as well it would not be a dream that they would truly conquer all of Hybris. Then Arael would be nothing more than a foolish traitor who has done nothing.”
“Is that why you’re looking forward to it?”
“Do you know? It’s said that a child born with the curse of service becomes the best messenger. Since you were so weak everyone in the clan had high expectations for Arael.”
“I guess it’s more like fear. The idea of facing the Senate’s best assassins.”
“Oh right! We didn’t do so well among the Aragasa! That’s why we were recruited by Manza-Zadek. And we made money played had children raised them… We lived the lives that normal people should have. My children grew up without being subjected to the inhumane selection work of the Herald Clan. And now we have to fight the energetic Aragasa. What on earth is Arael doing? Sending a half-brother like this!”
Karchen trembled with anger and fear.
Aragasa’s life is not normal. They are a clan that hits the first arrow with the second arrow. They are said to be born with an innate sense of space and physical strength but it is something that cannot be achieved without tremendous training.
In order to carry out her duties as the Emperor’s messenger Aragasa forced children to work and it was only after hearing from Manza-Zadek that Karchen realized that this was a wrong way to live.
But now that he has come to fight the Aragasas he cannot guarantee his victory.
To have to fight monsters that have dedicated their lives only to fighting and killing.
When she was a messenger she wasn’t afraid no matter how strong the enemies she fought against. She had nothing to lose. But now she had too much to lose.
“I want to see my children grow up. I want to see them live full lives not just Aragasa. But… damn it I have to pay Manza-Zadek for the salary he gave me.”
“Is what Manza-Zadek says true?”
“Yes. If you are still a messenger do you have the Emperor’s voice? Ask him. I won’t lie to you.”
“….”

[It’s true.]
The Emperor’s voice answered Azadin’s question concisely.
“You admit it too easily.”
[If you tell such a petty lie in order to exploit the messenger’s loyalty and claim to be the Emperor’s voice it will tarnish the Emperor’s honor.]
“Why are they still using us who took the emperor’s life as messengers?”
[You are the ones who murdered the Emperor but I do not resent the Aragasas for that alone. When we were created it was the early days of the Emperor’s reign. The Emperor at that time was a man who believed in his ideals without a single doubt. However many things happened.]
“What’s going on?”
[that….]
The Emperor’s voice spoke of events that had taken place in the past.
*********
Emperor Yaeslat was outraged that the other royal families and even the Yaegas gods were focused on physical pleasures and indifferent to the suffering of the people due to exploitation.
Even though injustice was covering the world and causing suffering to the people everyone was just focused on their own pleasure thinking that it was better than submitting to the power of Nether and Kurt.
Yaeslat who could not stand it overthrew his own people and became the one and only emperor.
However even after becoming such a being he was unable to eradicate the evil of this world. And there was something that left a great scar on the soul of such an emperor…
The emperor created and supported relief areas to care for discriminated lepers.
He relieved the suffering of lepers stopped the progression of their disease and healed them as his miraculous powers gathered so the lepers praised the emperor and loved him more than anyone else.
But in the year of the plague… while the emperor was using his miraculous powers to stop the plague children started going missing near the relief area for lepers.
Those involved in the investigation discovered that lepers who had taken refuge in the emperor’s relief area had kidnapped and eaten children in the belief that they would be cured of their disease.
A deep wound began to form in the Emperor’s soul that could never be healed.
No matter how strong the obvious evils he would not have been hurt. But the existence of those who deluded by superstition and led by ignorance committed terrible evils with good intentions left a greater wound on the Emperor’s soul than any evil.
Besides the lepers many foolish people committed terrible acts out of purely malicious intent and each time a deep darkness fell over the emperor’s soul.
Finally the emperor concluded.
Ignorance is also evil. Evil arises from ignorance so I will teach those who do not know.
But as you teach you inevitably come to know.
The intelligence of each person is different and sometimes no matter how much you teach them there are those who lack the innate intelligence and cannot understand…
And it also bothered the Emperor that human aging was transforming the most intelligent beings into the most dull and evil beings.
In the pursuit of good and justice the apparent evil was no obstacle. Rather how could they eradicate evil if their inner weakness did not eradicate the soil in which it took root?
The emperor planned to euthanize all the illiterate people.
He wanted to bring about the purification of this world by painlessly eliminating all those who do not know letters do not know the law and do not understand mathematics and principles.
The emperor’s justice was tinged with madness.
In the end the Emperor’s lover Harkonia the leader of the Herald Clan who the Emperor loved the most and who also loved the Emperor the most took up the sword herself. There were no heroic battles or dark assassinations.
The emperor willingly gave his heart to his lover’s blade.

[Therefore the voices of our Emperor do not condemn the actions of your messengers.]
The Emperor’s voice spoke.
[What we must protect is the Emperor’s ideals and mission. The Emperor of the time who created us would have approved of your actions. That is the role he wanted from you the God-King-Slayers.]
As a last resort to stop the new kings from running wild the Emperor accepted Aragasa as his messenger.
But now that the Emperor is gone the Heralds have begun to join hands with the evil forces that once threatened humanity in order to take over this world for themselves.
If the Herald Clan stopped the Emperor when he went wild who should stop the Herald Clan when they go wild?
