    #188. Sugar Rush 4

“Oh my. It smells like cigarettes. Are you mixing cigarettes and marijuana and smoking them? Should I ventilate the room a bit?”

    “What? What is it?!”

    “Hey this guy!?”

The farm owners were startled to see someone suddenly enter their house.

Around this clubhouse there are many skilled mercenaries and farm workers including the big and strong ones who are talented in martial arts.

Since they even let the hunting dogs out it was a place like Yongdamhohyeol where not even a single rat could enter freely. But didn’t this young man come in very confidently?

“Are you all children of darkness? Let’s get some fresh air and some light.”

The young man opened the window. Light from outside streamed in illuminating the clubhouse.

In the darkness they were powerful men who could even appoint the king of Bthuma at will. But in the light they were just fat corrupt old men who were consumed by pleasure.

    “What a rude guy.”

    “Step aside master.”

The servants who had received the exploding door approached the messenger family. They all seemed to be skilled in martial arts and their movements were unusual.

“This is the clubhouse of the Bel Hoda Sugar Business Association a place only for the privileged.”

“You will pay for your crime with your life for breaking down that mahogany door and coming in.”

“After cutting off one of his ankles I’ll let the hunting dogs loose and play with them for a long time!”

As the servants spoke they drew their weapons. They were cane swords with blades embedded in the canes of gentlemen.

    “Oh that’s cool?”

The young man of the messenger clan was amazed at the weapons.

“It will be even cooler with your blood on the blade!”

The servant shouted and swung his cane sword but…

The young man lightly extended his hand and flicked his middle finger. If a person’s fingernail were to strike a solid metal weapon it would inevitably damage his fingers. But…

    -Ouch!

The blade snapped in the middle and flew away. Then the young man’s hand twisted like a snake wrapping itself around the arm of the servant who was swinging the sword and lightly threw him away.

    “this!”

The servants were momentarily confused. The direction in which the messenger man threw his comrades was coincidentally the sofa where the farm owners had taken refuge.

Should you protect the owner first? If you protect the owner then the entire clubhouse? Or only the owner who pays you?

They rushed out hesitantly and bewildered and grabbed the servant who had been thrown so they were all swept away and rolled around together.

“Hmm the cane sword is cool but it’s so thin that it’s not very durable. I’d like one but it’s not very practical.”

    “This kid!”

Another servant stepped forward. The servants working in the clubhouse both male and female had to be of outstanding appearance. The largest most muscular and well-trained of them all the chief servant rushed at the young man of the messenger clan and threw a lightning-quick punch.

‘Our servant is stronger than any Cell Sword mercenary!’

‘A drunkard was killed by one punch from the servant…’

All the servants thought so but the messenger man easily blocked the servant’s fist and lightly jabbed the servant’s face with the same arm he blocked.

It was a light blow that didn’t even hit his shoulder or body… but didn’t the servant who had a considerably sturdy build suddenly collapse?

    “Ugh?! Move! Move!”

He was in agony holding onto his own legs and shaking them with his own hands. He was conscious but his body was not listening to him.

    “Ugh…..”

The servants quickly realized that the intruder was a master far superior to them.

    “Then shall we talk now?”

The young messenger looked around at the farm owners.

    “story?”

“Even if I kill you here and now other identical guys will just take your place. That’s why I want to talk.”

    “….”

The farm owners were surprised by the messengers who spoke to them contrary to their expectations.

“I know that my petitioner has thoughtlessly tried to save face and pick a fight with you. That’s why you are trying to crush her with force. That’s your order isn’t it?”

    “That’s right.”

The farm owners were momentarily taken aback by this young man from the herald clan speaking for them but then they smiled.

It has always been so. The sugar planters of Bel Hoda had enormous wealth and even the nobles and clergy would flatter them in order to win their favor.

Was this young messenger also trying to flatter me? If so it was worth talking to him.

“So. What kind of deal are you proposing Messenger Clan?”

“I’m trying to resolve the petition. If I can convince you and get my petitioner’s wishes through I’ll be satisfied and you’ll be satisfied.”

“So what kind of persuasion is it? What conditions will you use to persuade us?”

“If you give up slavery you and my petitioner will have nothing to fight about. The petitioner will be satisfied. What do you think?”

“Huh. Are you out of your mind?”

The farm owners burst into laughter but the young messenger was serious.

“Slavery is prohibited by the Emperor’s command and the laws of the Eight Kingdoms. It will not be a loss of face for you to abandon slavery and follow the law now. Rather you will be praised for your mercy.”

    “Do we look like fools?”

“That kind of praise isn’t worth a penny!”

“Think about it. Would you be losing money by abolishing slaves and paying them wages instead of the cost of hiring slave hunters and maintaining private armies?”

“We have to maintain a private army anyway. Why do the nobles respect the enormous wealth of our business? If we do not maintain a private army the king and the nobles will take away our business.”

“It takes money to train and feed private soldiers. But we can’t just let the army sit idle. If we don’t give them work they’ll try to see if they can steal our wealth with their swords. So we have to give them work. We have to capture slaves and manage them and with the money we earn we can pay for the maintenance of the army.”

In other words because they did not trust the king and the nobles they had to raise private soldiers and because they did not trust private soldiers they maintained the slave system.

“We do not enslave innocent people for no reason not for sadistic reasons. We do it to protect this great wealth to secure our independence to ensure our survival and freedom.”

“Oh yes. So you are taking away the freedom of others and making them slaves for your wealth and freedom. What a wonderful saying.”

    “We are different from them.”

    “What?”

“They don’t deserve freedom and we don’t.”

Then the young man from the messenger clan chuckled.

“What disgusting nonsense. We are called the Kingslayers because we killed the nobles every time they talked like that. My earlobes are worn out just from the nonsense the nobles are spouting off so I wish you who are not nobles would restrain yourself a bit.”

    “So the negotiations are over?”

“No. There is still room for negotiation.”

    “There is room for negotiation?”

“Yes. Abolish slavery and pay wages. Then we the Heralds will help you the Aragatha to keep your farms from falling into the hands of the nobles. There is no need to feed useless private soldiers and maintain a bad reputation. I promise this in the name of Azadin the Second Herald of the Emperor.”

Azadin a young man from the herald clan made a proposal to them. However this proposal also seemed ridiculous to the farm owners.

“Hahaha. What a funny guy. How dare you messengers get your hands on our Bel Hoda’s sugar?”

“Countless kings and nobles have longed for Bel Hoda’s sugar. And now the heralds are asking us to give it to them while trampling on our dignity? As if they were doing us a favor?”

The farmers laughed at Azadin’s proposal.

He was a plantation owner who even refused the king’s army who approached him to protect his sugarcane plantations and sugar factories.

But the messenger clan is supposed to be the protector of Bel Hoda’s sugar business association. How is that even a matter for negotiation?

“You seem to be a bit smarter than that girl since you came here to make a deal but you’re still an idiot. Are you stupid because you have no soul?”

“Hmm? Do you think my condition is that bad? You’ll change your mind when you experience what’s about to happen…”

    Azadin shrugged.

Then suddenly the clubhouse door flipped upside down. The debris that hadn’t blown away when Azadin kicked the door open and came in was scattered again.

A group of figures appeared through the completely broken door.

In walked a dwarf with a blunderbuss a young human male with a sword and shield an elven female with blue warpaint on her face and a haggard-faced human male carrying a long staff.

They were adventurers hired by the farm owners.

“I tried not to come to the clubhouse unless absolutely necessary.”

The elf woman frowned and waved her hand in front of her nose as if she hated the very smell of the clubhouse.

“Hold on Veldras. Your employer is in danger. This is your chance to get a bonus.”

“But be careful he’s the second leader of the Herald Clan. Even if only half of the rumors are true there’s a huge monster right before our eyes.”

The dwarf musketeer warned his comrades and aimed his blunderbuss at Azadin.

    “iced coffee.”

    “The cell swords…..”

The servants were delighted when the mercenaries came.

The servants of the clubhouse were prohibited from being armed so the only weapons they had were kitchen knives.

Even the staff sword that the servant had was broken by Azadin but then properly armed mercenaries showed up.

But Azadin warned the mercenaries with a cold attitude.

“Wouldn’t it be dangerous if you pointed a gun at me? Wouldn’t that hit my employer too?”

In fact Azadin was also nervous inside. The gun was a weapon that even Azadin could not dare to underestimate.

‘When I was training as a messenger I only saw it being fired from a distance.’

That was when Azadin got nervous.

    “Employers here.”

A young human woman with a mask on her face sneaked through the window and pulled her employers against the wall.

In the first place the reason they broke down the already broken door and came in was to draw Azadin’s attention this way making it easier to rescue the farm owners later.

As soon as the farm owner left Azadin other adventurers flocked in.

    -Thump thump….

The sound of footsteps could be heard even from the ceiling indicating that the adventurers had climbed up to the ceiling.

The clubhouse was soon completely surrounded.

Adventurers who had climbed up to the ceiling had torn off the roof and thrust their crossbows inside ready to attack at any moment.

    “We will help you too.”

As the servants came out the mercenaries began to mutter and try to dissuade them.

“Step back. Your loyalty to your master is great but now it is the turn of the swordsmen who have tasted human blood to step forward.”

“You guys have some talent but you’re not like real warriors who try to kill people.”

The mercenaries of the Cell Sword Guild pushed their servants back grumbling.
