    #163. Leap of Knowledge 6

“So you need a pure human being. One who is not tainted by the power of the Nether?”

Azadin groaned as he finally understood Arael’s intention.

“I’m sorry but I have to decline. I don’t even know what kind of medicine it is.”

“Then I have to kill you…”

Indim said this and tried to draw his sword but Arael stopped him.

“Don’t touch Azadin Indim. Who allowed such rudeness?”

“But Lady Arael. If they leak the truth….”

“It’s okay. At least Azadin won’t sell us out to the Qing Dynasty even if he refuses my demands. Right?”

Of course Azadin had no intention of selling them to the Qing Dynasty. However he felt slightly offended when the person in question spoke so confidently.

“Why do you say so so clearly?”

    “Because you are my brother.”

“I wish I had felt that way when I hurt myself in the eye.”

“I should say it straight. Where were your eyes? At least you look much better now.”

    “Hey you…..”

“Then shall we move on to the next agenda? Azadin. Did you take a copy of the New King’s Book from Dimia?”

    “Oh that.”

“Can you give it back to me? To prove our friendship.”

    “You don’t like it?”

Azadin shook his head. The copies of the Book of the New King were an excellent source of white magic to Azadin and he continued to train himself using the copies.

The more you use the better because your magic power will be temporarily depleted. If this is useful even to Azadin who can’t use magic properly how useful would it be for Arael and her party? Thinking about that I can’t give it to them anymore.

“You must strike and take it Lady Arael. How long are you going to tolerate Azadin’s arrogance? If you really want to get your hands on him it would be better to force him into submission and keep him by your side.”

Indim was indignant when Azadin refused Arael’s request. However Arael refused Indim’s offer even in such a situation.

“My brother who has always been timid is now showing off his spirit and I have no intention of breaking that. Alright Azadin. How about joining me and fighting against the Senate together?”

“I can’t decide on that yet.”

“If you join me I can get my hands dirty less. I can accomplish my plans with fewer civilian casualties Azadin. Are you really going to refuse my offer? If you refuse you will be throwing away tens of thousands of lives that could have been saved in the future.”

“You take me for a fool. Are you calling that a threat now?”

“It’s not a threat it’s the truth. But I understand that you don’t like me. You won’t realize it until the time comes. Don’t regret it later.”

After leaving those words Arael and Indim disappeared into the windy darkness.

    *********

    “That’s amazing.”

When Arael disappeared Jibek was amazed.

    “what?”

“It seems to me that she really cares about you. Even though she is the head of a dangerous organization she never tries to invade you.”

“The wound on my eye is that thing’s doing? It’s just enjoying itself. There’s no need to give it that kind of meaning.”

Azadin denied Xibek’s comments about Arael.

“But Azadin. In my experience that type of person doesn’t lie. Of course if necessary they will lie but it will be a well-calculated lie. Even if only half of what she said is true it is dangerous.”

    “….”

Azadin also agreed with that point. There is no falsehood in what Arael says.

“Well it seems like they have high expectations of the captain as a blood relative. In other words doesn’t that mean the captain is in a position to receive a lot of protection from higher-ups on both sides? It’s actually good.”

“I don’t know if that’s something you can take lightly but you have to be able to trust both sides.”

Azadin looked back at Scott who was talking comfortably and was startled. Scott was already picking up something to eat again.

    “hey!”

Just as Azadin was about to say something to Scott the heavens and earth suddenly shook with a flash of lightning. Then lightning struck from the sky and struck all over the camp.

    “Whoa!”

    “Eww!”

    “…what?!”

Azadin was shocked by the lightning strikes that struck repeatedly throughout the refugee camp.

It’s not that uncommon for lightning to strike a field but it’s unusual for it to strike so many times in a single field.

    “What? What’s going on?”

    “Ugh!?”

Jibek got up and started to adjust his armor.

    “This is…..”

Scott was so surprised that he swallowed what he had in his mouth and picked up the amulet.

    “oh my god.”

Azadin also drew his Azure Steel longsword. A cool chill radiated from the blade and enveloped Azadin’s body.

In the pouring rain tents collapsed and monsters appeared.

    “Kwaaaaak!”

    “Oh father!”

    “My son!”

    “Daughter!”

The refugees were screaming. Their sons and daughters their families were starting to turn into monsters.

    “Is this it? Captain?”

“Yes. Those who took the medicine from Cheonggeundang…”

    Azadin frowned.

Those who had been cured of fever dysentery and other diseases by taking Cheonggeondang’s elixir began to mutate into the Nether’s grim reaper’s retinue.

Everyone’s head split open and limbs grew out of their heads covered in thick bark like that of an oak tree.

The human torso supported by limbs growing out of its head dangled around looking like a hanged monster.

    “Oh Dad!”

The little girl cried out at the monster. But the monster having lost its senses reached out its arms to the girl who blocked its path. It was definitely not a hand reaching out to her family.

    “damage!”

Azadin jumped in and swung his sword.

The arm covered in oak bark was able to deflect most sword strikes but was cleanly cut down by the blue light swung by Azadin.

At that moment black blood spurted out from the cut surface.

    “Growling!”

    The monster is in pain.

    “Oh Dad!”

    “Let me escape! Shati!”

    “Oh I see!”

As Shati rushed to protect the child Jibek jumped out raised his shield and instead of drawing his sword he grabbed an axe that was stuck in a nearby tree stump.

    “Kaaaak!”

The retinue continues to pull out the roots of the oak tree and target Azadin.

Azadin checked the situation of his followers while cutting down the attacks with his Azure Steel longsword.

When Jibek aimed for the torso of the servant that is the body part that was still human-like the servant wrapped the human body with oak roots.

“The human part is the weakness!”

    “If that’s true!”

At that moment Scott lunged at something.

Large rats the size of a human arm their eyes glowing red sprint up the roots of the oak tree and approach the human torso.

    “Time bomb!”

The giant rat exploded sending its body flying away.

    “Keeeeeek!”

The oak branches trembled and the brains inside the trunk poured out and dried and twisted just as a chestnut or a sea urchin reveals its inner core when it breaks open.

    “That’s the weak point. But….”

When Azadin and Zibek turned around in confusion they saw that the girl had fainted at the sight of such a horrific sight.

It’s only natural that he would faint when those guys suddenly appeared and blew up the torso of what used to be his father spilling his brain onto the floor.

It wasn’t just this girl. Cries of people who had lost their families could be heard everywhere.

The cries of children who have lost their parents. The grief of parents who have lost their children.

All of this pierced through Azadin’s brain and made him dizzy.

    ‘I don’t have anything that I can call a family…’

Azadin has no traditional family. His only family members are Arael Aldis and Kazas.

Nevertheless this heartbreaking cry tore at his heart. Azadin groaned at the heartbreaking voice of a person losing his mind and crying out in grief.

    “Archangel of Mercy!”

At that moment… countless corpse pieces moved with a strange propulsion approached the followers and exploded. Scott had used his necromancy to eliminate the followers.

    “You did well right Captain?”

    “….”

Before Azadin could stop him Scott stuck a branch into the remains of the girl’s father’s body on the ground and cast a necromancy spell.

A tree branch was stuck to the severed arm like a leg and it crawled along the ground by itself. The sight of the tree branch stuck into the severed arm and bleeding was very bizarre.

    “Scott…..”

    “good!”

Scott reassembles the shattered corpse into pieces in front of the bereaved family casts a necromancy spell on it and has it charge at his followers.

A demonic retinue of oak trees roams around killing humans and Scott’s chariot made of human arms crawls underneath them.

    “Time bomb!”

When he explodes the corpse again the torso is torn off the brains are poured out again and the group stops moving. Scott starts modifying the pieces of the corpse that are revealed again.

The bereaved family members who were watching cried clutched their chests and rolled around in the mud distraught.

‘This kid is really talented but the technique he uses is so disgusting. That’s why people of this world would catch him and burn him at the stake if he were a necromancer.’

Even Azadin who had little aversion to necromancy felt disgusted by its horror.

Zibek’s hand was trembling as he held the axe wanting to cut Scott down right now.

But if Scott doesn’t act those guys will kill people.

    *********

The Taoist priest of Cheonggeondang was trembling.

    “We’ve all been fooled! It’s a trap!”

Oak branches were still growing from his ears and tree branches grew from his head like deer antlers.

Unlike others who became mindless monsters he was able to control his condition.

However most of those who accepted the Qing Dynasty’s leap forward and became Qing Dynasty members became Nether’s followers.

Fortunately the Taoist was able to control his followers around him and keep them from committing senseless slaughter but the very fact that this situation had come to this was a trap.

“That’s great. Are you a member of the upper ranks?”

“Hey what’s the upper level? It’s probably just the minimum level of sanity that can be maintained.”

Those looking at the Taoist priest were holding strange bows.

The four members of the Flower Bird Wind and Moon who became Arael’s subordinates Flower Dimia Bird Seraph Wind Aleph and Dimia’s younger sister Zenith looked down at the Cheonggeondang Taoist priest.

“Those messengers! What a terrible thing you have done! Do you know what you have just done?”

    “Haha. What did we do?”

“Okay do you have the key to the Emperor’s treasury? Give it to me.”

“Don’t make me laugh! Never do that… Do you know how many innocent people you’ve killed?”

    “I don’t know.”

    “yes?”

    “I didn’t count because I wasn’t interested.”

Janice grumbled filing her nails against the file.

They weren’t even blinking an eye at the thought of people dying in this refugee camp.
