    #159. Leap of Knowledge 2

‘Am I crazy? How much of a difference does it make to have regeneration magic and not to have it and I can’t let you go? Besides you already know too much about me and your status among the Nagas isn’t that high so I can’t let you go.’

The regenerative magic that could heal injuries was of immense value.

Besides Shati doesn’t have a very high status among the Nagas. Even if Azadin were to release her she wouldn’t be able to exert any positive influence on the Nagas.

Rather it is clear that she will only suck up information about Azadin and use the information she has obtained to persistently attack Azadin who has acquired a large number of copies of the New King’s Book.

For Shati’s sake Azadin had no intention of letting her go.

“That Nagaraja may seem like a nice person but he’s only doing it because he’s abroad. When you return to your kingdom Shati I will never leave you alone.”

“I was prepared to receive some level of punishment. Maybe a little whipping having my eyes and tongue gouged out and having my arms and legs cut off…”

That’s bearable. It would be an unspeakably horrible punishment for a human but Nagas have regenerative abilities so even that kind of punishment won’t cause permanent damage.

“Don’t you get it yet Shati? I don’t want to let you go.”

    “….”

“I want to be with you.”

‘I want to travel with a regeneration magician.’

Although it was said in that sense everyone who heard it could not help but think differently.

    “Okay then. Go safely.”

Dehares said goodbye to Azadin and boarded the ship and sailed away.

    *********

“You really are a very communicative Nagaro.”

Jebeck was secretly impressed by the dignity that Dehares displayed. Then Scott grumbled.

“But when they go out they’ll eat humans? Those guys have humans in their food. Since I’ve been eating everything that’s not human I’m starting to have to start eating human flesh but I don’t want to show that to the humans so I made them get off.”

‘But if you look into the cause isn’t it because you ate all the food that was supposed to be served to the guests? Why are you bragging about how well you did?’

It wasn’t easy to defend the flesh-eating monsters but when I thought about Dehares’ consideration I secretly found it annoying that Scott was acting like this.

“But anyway this is a coastal cliff area. How do I get up there?”

Because the terrain had a few sandbars below the coastal cliffs there were no houses nearby and not even any animal tracks.

“Even if you give me the chance I can’t believe you’re putting me down in a place like this.”

“It won’t be a big problem since we have Kerim goats.”

Azadin said this and looked at the cliffs. After a while he found a path.

    “You want to climb this?”

“Just wait. I’ll go up first.”

Azadin took off the saddlebag of the Kerim goat to lighten the load and mounted the goat. The goat climbed the steep slope which was almost like a cliff with ease.

    “and.”

    “Okay. Now then…..”

Azadin untied the rope from above lowered it down hooked it to a nearby rock and attached it to the goat’s saddle.

    “Okay! Tie up!”

“What are you talking about? It must be really heavy.”

Jibek half in doubt tied the steed to the rope as Azadin had instructed. Then…

    “Ugh!”

Wasn’t it Azadin pulling the rope from the cliff to pull the steed up? The surprised steed stepped on the wall with its foot and was able to climb up the cliff without crashing into the wall.

    “Okay next!”

Azadin thus brought up Zibek and Scott Shati.

“Whew. That’s amazing Commander. That’s incredible power. Has the Kajas Sea become even stronger with the copy of the New King’s Book?”

“That’s true but of course I didn’t pull it alone. I pulled it with my goat.”

“Even so it’s a tremendous amount of strength. With that much power I could make a wheelchair and ride around. Or how about a carrying pole? I make one out of wood like this and the captain carries it on his back and I ride on it.”

“You call me captain but you treat me like a porter.”

“It’s called the right place for the right person. The physical leader uses his body and I the brainy type use my brain.”

“Why did you use your mouth like that instead of your brain to eat and get kicked out? If you had eaten a little less you could have gotten on the boat comfortably.”

“Okay that’s it. The important thing now is to supply the food and forage that is lacking. Food is….”

Then Lord Jibek took out the dried fish. While on the boat Jibek diligently fished and handed some over to the Nagas and dried some in the sea breeze to make dried fish.

But that was more than Scott could eat in one day.

“The problem is that the macho has fallen.”

Scott said so shamelessly. He wasn’t entirely wrong. When there’s a shortage of forage the beans and oats that feed the cattle run out and the sacks are empty.

“We should look for a nearby town.”

    *********

Young men wearing blue hoods were robbing the town’s merchants and warehouses loading their valuables onto carts.

    “We are the Cheonggeun Party!”

“It is not theft at all it is just collecting by issuing conscription tickets because there is a shortage of food!”

“You are safe because we fight off the demons and thieves on the streets! You should think of this as a tax!”

They plundered the villagers’ food and supplies giving them requisition notices written on paper in return.

When a war broke out and the military procured local supplies in a hurry a receipt that promised to be repaid later was called a requisition slip. But why did they issue requisition slips?

One of the merchants who was astonished stood up and argued as a representative.

“There is no mention of when or where these conscription notices will be given out!”

“Oh I said I’ll pay you if you come to the Cheonggeun Party headquarters after the world becomes peaceful!”

    “Where is that headquarters?”

“Of course when the world of the Cheonggeun Party comes they will appear all over the world!”

“But why do you have so much distrust! Are you perhaps a member of the Kurt cult?!”

These so-called Cheonggeun Party members attacked merchants who questioned them with spears and swords.

“Let’s say it’s city food. What about collecting silverware?!”

“We are just collecting things because we are running out of supplies while camping.”

“Then wouldn’t wooden utensils be enough? I know because I was in the military. I know that you need to take pots and pans with you to cook in the field but why silver utensils…?”

As the merchant continued to argue the clerk who was handing out the demand slips snickered.

    “Hey old man.”

The merchant called Old Man Jang was startled.

It was because his tone of voice had changed to a dark one as if poison had been spread on his tongue and was spewing out with every breath he exhaled.

“What do you want to hear from us? Are we a bunch of thieves? Do you want to say that? Then you’re all finished. Do you understand? Is that your daughter over there? Is that your concubine?”

    “Here comes my daughter.”

“They look half and half so what if we just go rogue? We’re doing this to maintain discipline. Do you want to see what happens when we turn a blind eye?”

    “….”

“Be quiet and accept the conscription notice and hope that our Cheonggeun Party will stand tall. Then I will return it all to you later.”

“But only half of the materials are listed…”

“Of course it is a tax. We are still working hard to eradicate bandits and monsters in the Adyrov region. Shouldn’t we pay this amount of tax in consideration of our hard work?”

    “….”

“You should be happy instead. If you write down the tax and put it on the tax return you can see that we have the will to pay it back right? Isn’t that right?”

The clerk who was writing the conscription notice smiled and subtly threatened the merchant.

Then a voice was heard behind him.

“But if there are people who take half of the taxes it wouldn’t be very welcome for merchants right?”

    “what?”

When the clerk turned around he saw a young man with a helmet on his face sitting behind them on a cart loaded with loot or rather taxes.

    ‘uh?’

    ‘When were you here?’

They looked around in bewilderment. There was no one else here only this young man.

“So what do you ultimately want? Do you want to become the lord of Adyrov?”

    “What? You?”

    “A traveler passing by.”

    “wayfarer?”

    “Haha. This kid.”

The Cheonggeundang soldiers held the spear upside down and struck the masked young man who called himself a traveler. However the spear cut through the air.

As the young man got down from the cart the spear naturally missed.

    “uh?”

“I guess he won’t just answer. Okay. Then let’s create an atmosphere for peaceful conversation.”

As the young man spoke he picked up a stone from the ground.

“Aren’t you going to put it down?”

The Cheonggeundang soldiers tensed but the young man threw the stone with just a small snap of his elbow and wrist.

    however….

    -Ouch!

The helmet of one of the Cheonggeundang soldiers was crushed and his body was thrown backwards. It was a terrifying destructive force that did not match the throwing motion.

    “This kid!”

    “Are you a wizard?!”

As the surprised Qing soldiers were confused a self-proclaimed traveler asked them.

“What is the Qing Dynasty fighting against and what is their goal? Is Lord Guillaumewald Count of Lantaric Baron of Adirov your master?”

    “This kid!”

“Has the atmosphere for conversation not been created yet?”

    Another soldier stumbled backwards.

    “Catch that kid!”

The soldiers rushed at him but the self-proclaimed traveler circled the cart and dodged the soldiers who were approaching him.

“Divide left and right you idiots!”

At the order of the clerk the soldiers with spears and swords split up to attack the traveler but… there were only two soldiers left so splitting up to attack the traveler wouldn’t pose much of a threat. And…

    -puck!

Another soldier fell to the slingshot.

    “shit!”

The last remaining Cheonggeundang soldier stabbed his spear in anger but the traveler grabbed the spear’s neck with one hand. The spear was stuck as if it was stuck in a crevice between rocks.

“You gave me a conscription ticket and didn’t kill anyone so I won’t cause you permanent damage. If you did I would have castrated you.”

The masked youth spoke and struck the spear with the edge of his hand. The well-oiled elastic strong and tough spear snapped cleanly in half.

    “uh?”

    -Shh!

The two halves of the spear flew out and passed between the clerk’s legs.

As the traveler had said the spear did not hit his groin but if it had come just an inch higher it could have caused problems with the scribe’s fertility.

    “Ugh… This kid.”

Cold sweat ran down Seogi’s cheek. It was flying at him so fast that it was impossible to dodge block or even recognize it.

The moment the blade passed between his legs the scribe realized that the traveler could really kill them if he wanted to.
