    #15. The Tooth’s 6

“We’re just going to attack the monsters! After we defeat the monsters let’s hunt down the messenger clan or something!”

    “Oh! That’s right!”

    “Let’s attack the monsters first!”

The villagers all took up their bows and began shooting arrows.

    *********

Azadin smiled bitterly as he watched the arrows flying over his head. Compared to the arrows he shot they were all just weak arrows.

There were some strong bows among them but even those strong bows failed to hit flesh and bounced off teeth. The villagers seemed to be shooting arrows to help but Azadin felt it was a waste of arrows to shoot them.

    ‘Give me that arrow.’

However seeing that the direction of people’s attacks was completely focused on the monsters I could see their determination. At least until they fought the monsters they recognized Azadin as one of their allies.

They might change after the monsters are defeated but for now he was satisfied that they recognized Azadin as their comrade.

    “then….”

Azadin took advantage of the slight slack to loosen up his shoulders. He stretched and swung his arms while dodging his opponent’s attacks.

    “What are you doing! Hey!”

The goblin who had become a servant of the King of Tooth stepped forward in frustration. Ever since he realized that Azadin was barely able to cut him down at the edge of his tentacle attack range he began to gradually close the distance.

However as you get closer the arrows shot by the villagers become more painful. The accuracy of the attacks increases and the power of the projectiles increases.

Thanks to the time they gave him Azadin was able to relax his shoulders somewhat.

    “Okay. Then….”

Azadin put down his sword soaked in digestive juices.

“Let’s get started. I haven’t fully relaxed my shoulders yet… but this should be enough!”

He threw the sword which was beginning to corrode in the digestive juices to the floor and instead picked up a tooth that had fallen to the floor. It was a sharp tooth like a triangular axe head.

Azadin picked up the thing that resembled a shark’s tooth and threw it by swinging it to the side using his well-flexed shoulder.

    -Wedge!

The teeth that flew through the wind even tore apart the tentacles.

    -puck!

And the King of the Teeth’s retinue was embedded in his body.

    “Keeeeeek!”

The King of Tooth’s retinue writhed in sudden excruciating pain.

“Okay! This is enough to eat.”

Azadin quickly picked up the teeth he had dropped with his sword and began throwing them.

I can’t throw at full speed because my shoulder and elbow are still not fully warmed up but instead I started throwing with a clean center of gravity and accurate timing so I was able to throw quickly without putting too much strain on my shoulder and elbow.

The teeth that escaped Azadin’s hand flew sharply and began to slash at the King of Tooth’s followers.

    “Kwaaah!”

A tattooed goblin head popped out from the body of the servant who could not withstand the intense pain.

“You you! I will become the King of Teeth. I was reborn as a god a greater being but because of a mere human….”

“It’s because I happen to be the assassin of the god king.”

Azadin answered and threw his sharp fangs again splitting the goblin’s head apart.

    *********

Even after splitting the goblin’s head the Tooth King’s retinue continued to live but the game was already decided. The ground was littered with the projectiles Azadin would throw and the retinue’s normal attacks could not hit Azadin.

All that remained was for the Tooth King’s retinue to cast their spells but Azadin would smash the goblin heads as they popped out which only shortened the retinue’s lifespan.

“Oh no! King of Teeth Kararon!”

The goblin sorcerer who had shown his will to usurp power by becoming a servant of the King of Tooth finally collapsed while petitioning the King of Tooth when it was time for him to die.

    at last….

    -Kurururung!

The retinue of the King of the Tooth a giant mass of flesh and teeth began to disintegrate.

‘There is still concern that lesser demons or such may appear…’

Azadin lunged forward careful not to touch flesh and retrieved the wand that had fallen to the floor.

‘I don’t know for sure but I think this guy used this to find the location of the Shinwangjinseo?’

If this can really help us find the location of the New King’s Book… it would be useful to Azadin as well.

‘But since it was something a scout was holding it might be a fairly common item among monsters. Whatever it is I should keep it.’

Azadin picked it up and turned around.

    “Hmm.”

    “Soulless blasphemer!”

The village’s vigilantes were eyeing Azadin. Some of them were even drawing bows.

‘What a rude guy. Pulling the bowstring is something that can easily result in a mistake and firing the arrow.’

Azadin sighed. They could fight together until the monsters ran wild but in the end he was a persecuted messenger.

Some people are certainly grateful to Azadin for helping them and welcome him but others are suspicious. The hunter who appears to be the leader of the vigilante group asked the question on their behalf.

“What on earth are you thinking? Why… why did you defeat those monsters?”

“That’s probably the monster he brought!”

“That’s right! Isn’t it strange? A monster suddenly appears!”

Some people have been making ridiculous claims about the heralds saying that they are like a school of thought. They have been taught that the emperor’s heralds are soulless blasphemous creatures who deserve to die so it is not surprising that there are people who think like that.

Those who were not properly educated in the countryside were plundered by the king’s church and had no choice but to follow the teachings of the church.

    “As you all know…..”

Azadin raised his voice and spoke.

“I am only fulfilling my mission according to the Emperor’s gold coin. Someone has used the Emperor’s gold coin to make a wish for you.”

    “yes?”

    “Someone?”

    “Hey are you among us?”

“I have no reason to say that nor do I have the authority to say it.”

Azadin ignored the panicked people and stood before the gate wall. No arrows or stones rained down.

“Now that the work is done can I leave?”

    “….”

“Or will you fight me for the King’s Church which was just plundered by a nobleman’s illegitimate child?”

    “that….”

    “Do not insult our faithfulness.”

“Yes you are faithful people. Yes that’s right.”

Azadin yawned. Even the most seasoned messenger could not help feeling tired after having to march through a drought-stricken pioneer village on a mission to collect gold and then fighting this battle again.

    “So I’ll pass.”

    “Ugh?!”

The one who had the bow stringed tried to fire but the hunter stopped him. In the meantime Azadin lightly kicked off the barrier and climbed up to the gate without even touching the wall.

“Can I take a few arrows?”

Azadin took a handful of arrows from the quiver on the wall.

    “….”

    “Hmm.”

“The gold devil helped us because of the gold?”

“Are you saying that one of the villagers used gold coins?”

    “Who is it?”

The townspeople looked at each other suspiciously. Of course there was no such person.

    ‘Because it’s a lie.’

Azadin shrugged jumped down from the barrier and passed through the gate.

Then he heard the hunter’s voice muttering behind him.

    “…Thank you.”

The hunter said so that others would not hear.

Either the hunter realized that Azadin was lying or he wanted to show his gratitude to Azadin even if someone had paid him a fair price.

In the King’s Church even being associated with the Herald Clan was punishable by death. So it was extremely dangerous for this hunter to speak like this.

    “Hmm not at all.”

Azadin waved at them and started running towards the road.

[What is Geumhwa… lying so calmly.]

The Emperor’s voice spoke to Azadin.

“If you don’t say so won’t people not know English and continue to fear the King’s Church?”

[Don’t you hate them? You defeated the monsters and now they’re acting like that?]

“Well everyone is weak. I’m satisfied with the fact that they treated me kindly even though I was pretending to be blind. If someone is kind to the helpless shouldn’t they be kind to them too?”

Azadin said this and hurried on his way avoiding the people.

“Oh but I’m tired. I used to enjoy pretending to be blind and going through the gates with ease but this time I really got caught.”

    *********

Azadin who had protected the Eastern Gate Village from the Tooth King’s followers ran along the road for a meal. Soon he was able to spot two boys and a girl pulling a Kerim goat.

As Midiam and Ismail were walking back down the road with a torch they found Azadin.

    “Ah! Azadin! You’re here!”

    Medium welcomed Azadin with joy.

“Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?”

“No. Did you come back because you were waiting for me? You could have just left.”

It’s just a short trip anyway. If the two of them were able to find Azadin these children should be able to return to the sanctuary without much difficulty.

    But Medium shook his head.

“I feel bad when you say that.”

“No I’m telling you to be upset. What’s with that torch?”

“People gave it to me because one of my group got left behind. I had a hard time persuading them to send it back saying that I would look for it together.”

“He told me to take at least this.”

When Azadin explained that he had become separated from his group and lost his way on the mountain path it seemed that he had given Midiam and Ismail a torch to find him.

“How did you manage to shake it off? People must have been worried about you two little kids and not just let you go.”

“Yes. They say that mountain goats can defeat most monsters so everyone seems to understand. I was worried because they said they were the people of Hybris but if they don’t know that we are Aragasa then they’re young… No I’m so pretty that everyone is kind to me.”

“Haha. Are you being kind to me because I’m pretty and not young?”

    “yes.”

    Medium stuck out his lips.

“I’m 13. I’m not that young. There’s a queen in the North who got married at my age.”

“By the way you didn’t even give me gold so you must have wasted your energy. It’s true that the Hybris people were kind but I don’t think you needed to waste your energy like that.”

Ismail was upset that Azadin and Midiam’s relationship was improving so he insisted on speaking out.

“When I was pretending to be blind they helped me without any hope of gain. So I helped them without any hope of gain. As Midiam said helping and protecting the people is a beautiful thing. Without such aesthetics life would be boring.”

“So what happened? The monsters? How long were they there? Were the people thankful when you defeated them?”

Medium asked curiously. Although he was arrogant about being a member of the founder’s clan the Etar clan he still seemed like a child enjoying seeing the world.

‘They’re quite cute. Well no matter how much they’re the founders’ clan or whatever the children of the clan are raised in the sanctuary after receiving rigorous training. They’re at an age where they’re curious about the world.’

Azadin answered the question from Medium with sparkling eyes.

“One ogre and one goblin squad? And one member of the Kurt clan.”

    “Huh? A retinue?”

“You defeated the Kurt clan’s followers?”

    “He wasn’t that strong.”

Azadin said it as if it was no big deal.
