Night of the Soulless Heathens – 123

#123. Lantarik Entry 2
Azadin and his party began administrative work with Guillaume Wald at the New Heights Fortress.
Sir Brock and Lady Leeds had a young child but when Sir Brock gave up his lands and became a clergyman the son’s status was put on the line.
Accordingly Guillaumebald agreed to become the guardian of Lord Brok’s son and in the meantime to rule over the fortress of New Heights and its manors.
And the work of taking over the property and internal affairs of this place from the janitors and secretaries began. Fortunately Guillaume Wald was good at accounting and other things so the work itself was completed quickly.
While Guillaume Bald was working on the estate Azadin searched the lair of the Kurt Pantheon Union a coalition of Kurt followers.
“I am the Naga Empire.”
Shati claimed that the Naga Empire was the owner of this secret base.
“Well I guess so.”
Azadin searched for documents and letters but he could not read anything written in the Naga language or in the cuneiform script.
“Shati. Can you read it?”
“Do you think I can interpret that for you?! Even though I am your prisoner my heart is always single-mindedly devoted to the Naga Empire!”
“Huh? What did you say? Say it again.”
When Medium put an arrow on his bow Shati flinched.
“Just this once!”
“You listen well.”
“No but I know it’s hard to believe but most of it is just useless junk. As I see all the high-ranking officials have already left this place.”
As Shati spoke he read the documents most of which were ledgers of payments or amounts. Even those who did not know the language of Naga could tell that there were many numbers written in them.
“I got four copies of the Divine King’s Book here but there are no high-ranking officials left? If they left the Divine King’s Book behind there must have been high-ranking officials to manage it.”
“Do you know how scary the Wendigo is? There’s no reason to leave something precious behind when summoning the Nether’s reaper. On the other hand since its power is certain I think it’s worth investing four copies of the Book of the New King.”
In other words it means that even if it meant losing four chapters of the Book of the New King it was considered more profitable to send down the Wendigo and destroy the human world.
“What about Scott? What do you know?”
“There’s no particularly good information. All those in command have already escaped. When Salasma’s operation failed we were going to abandon this base but because of the suggestion of a woman named Mrs. Liz or something who thought we could use the Wendigo altar the hardliners stayed and liberated the Wendigo.”
“Did the senior executives destroy all the information when they left?”
“okay.”
“Hmm. Is it really that easy to destroy documents? If you look for something there should be something left. Shatina Scott you were originally here right? Don’t you know anything?”

“Orcs are usually contract mercenaries.”
“I am not a very high ranking person among the Nagas. I don’t know anything. I am so happy that I don’t know anything so I can’t teach you anything!”
Shati was delighted to hear this. But then Ismail found a book covered in black scales among the corpses of the Kurt Pantheon followers.
“Azadin. This…..”
“Hmm. This looks promising.”
“This may be a grimoire. Be careful.”
“Yes. It’s not that it’s not. You can tell just by looking at it that it’s a magic book.”
Azadin prepared his obsidian razor and opened his book.
“It’s a translation of Nether. Hmm. But…..”
Azadin frowned at that.
“A Nether translation? Then….”
“You should never read too much at once. It pollutes your mind. Well I’ve read a lot so it’s okay. … But this is a bit strange.”
Azadin felt puzzled as he looked at the book. He turned the pages several times reading it as if he was being sucked into the book. It was as if he was looking at it to confirm what he already knew.
At first the group just tried to ignore it but as Azadin’s attitude became increasingly strange they began to panic.
“Wait a minute! Don’t look at it for too long!”
Despite the medium’s warning Azadin opened the book and looked inside as if possessed by something.
“But I told you not to look at too many at once?”
“I’m fine because I have strong magical powers. But this is more….”
“Hey! Stop it!”
Scott in his wheelchair motioned for Ismail to do something about Azadin but Ismail decided to just wait and see what happened.
Blood began to flow from the gap in Azadin’s mask as he looked at the Nether Book for a long time.
“Azadin!”
“I’ve been watching this for too long.”
Azadin quickly took off his mask and used an obsidian razor to cut the wound where his eyes used to be but was now left by Arael. The skin Azadin had cut off began to twitch and move around turning into a dark red worm.
“Eek. What is that?!”
Shati is terrified.
“Tch!”
Azadin trampled the bug with his foot.
“…If a being of this world tries to understand the language of the Nether it will be contaminated. It is better to cut off the skin or surface and excise it from the body.”
Scott said and swallowed.
“But Captain you are not capable of using magic at all so how come you are so adept at handling Nether? And why on earth did you look at it so intently?”
“….”
Azadin kept his mouth shut as he closed the book and wiped the obsidian razor on his leather belt.
“Why is that?”
“No. Ismail brought this? Where on earth did he get it?”
“excuse me….”
Ismail pointed to the corpse of a Naga. It was much larger than the other Nagas and it was obvious that he was a Naga of noble status as he was wearing jewelry and a large curved sword.

“Was there anything strange?”
“Yes. This book contains the sentences that Kazas studied.”
“yes?”
“Why doesn’t Nagaga have the same results as what we studied at the Aragasa Senate?”
“Isn’t it because those who claim to do some magic study the language of the Nether? There’s no way we Nagas wouldn’t know what your heralds have studied. Perhaps our research results are even more extensive?”
“Well that’s fortunate.”
Azadin picked up the Nether book the Nagas had been studying.
“Do you really think that there is someone among the Aragasa who is in collusion with the Kurt Pantheon?”
Ismail asked.
“There’s a possibility… no. no.”
Azadin shook his head.
The researcher who was studying the Nether language was Elder Kazas. However if this was leaked the cause of the leak can only be thought to be Kazas.
Moreover Kazas is not originally an Aragasa. He is an elf and imprisoned elder who challenged the Aragasa and was captured and was forced to provide knowledge as atonement.
In other words he was a former enemy of Aragasa… and the elves were originally vassals of the Naga Empire.
‘But if that’s the case…’
It is said that Azadin’s teacher Kazas is a traitor to Aragasa.
‘No the evidence is still insufficient. This alone is too much.’
Azadin thought about this as he packed up his Nether books.
*********
The castle of Count Lantaric was already completely under the control of Prince Adler and his vassals who had sworn allegiance to him. If Count Lantaric Garnahair went missing Adler planned to use his vassals to assassinate his eldest son Guillaumewald or to persuade Guillaumewald to marry so that Adler could succeed to the title of Count Lantaric.
But strange rumors began to spread: Guillaumebald was refusing to become a member of the King’s Church and was coming here to become Count Lantaric.
At first everyone thought Guillaume Wald was crazy.
Adler and Guillaume Wald were 10 years apart in age. However when Adler was 10 Guillaume Wald was already inferior to Adler in all aspects including swordsmanship and magic. A 20-year-old mature knight would lose to a 10-year-old boy in a duel. Guillaume Wald was an idiot who was impossible to understand.
But is it true that Guillaume Bald is challenging to become Count Lantaric without even supporting his vassals?
“What happened? Those Cell Sword Guild guys? Isn’t their job to follow Guillaume Bald around teasing him and keeping an eye on him?”
Prince Adler was a handsome young man with a part of his hair in the front that was silver and he had such a delicate and elegant appearance that he could not be distinguished from a woman.
For those who love the bloodline of the Yaegasu Gods this pure-blooded figure is something they cannot help but admire. This was possible because he was a luxury product born from the long-term bloodline management of Count Garnahair of Lantaric.
Because of that he received unnecessary favor from Garnahair but Adler was proud of that too. It was because he was assured that the Lantaric territory would become his.
And now Guillaume Wald is challenging me?
“that is….”
“They say the Cell Sword members have died.”
The vassals hesitated as they spoke as if they also thought it was nonsense.
“What? Those guys? Why? Did they get food poisoning as a group?”
“It is said that he was killed in a counterattack while trying to assassinate Sir Guillaume Wald.”
“That… is some kind of joke?”
Adler opened his eyes wide.
“That’s it. Sir Guillaume Wald has been hiding his claws all this time.”
“No that idiot what’s with the claws… he needs to start talking sense.”
“But I think that’s true.”
“There have been some ominous rumors going around recently. Sir Guillaume Wald is said to be the hero of the New Heights Fortress.”
“What word is more incompatible with that idiot than the word hero? What are you talking about?”
“It is said that a monster appeared in the fortress of Sae-heung and everyone fled but it was resolved by Sir Guillaume Bald and his colleagues.”
“I knew the people were stupid but do you believe such a thing?”
“But they say that fog actually appeared and scary monsters appeared.”
“So you believe that? I could defeat the likes of Guillaume Wald single-handedly.”
The vassals were embarrassed to see Adler getting irritated. Originally Adler was humble and calm like the apple of an eye and monopolized the count’s love.
But as soon as the count went missing he started to get irritated easily by his retainers. Perhaps the way he had been acting up until then was just a pretense to look good to his father and retainers.
Even if it is hypocrisy it is fine. If the one who will become the monarch were to at least look after the feelings of his vassals it would be good. However it is not a good sign to be so nervous now that a strong competitor has appeared.
“Sir Guillaumebald actually took control of the New Heights Fortress and married off Sir Brok who had brought forth the demons and became the guardian of Sir Brok’s son Cedric.”
“What? You took away the fief that I gave to my vassal?”
“Yes. But I heard that Lord Brock was convinced.”
“This is strange. How did this happen?”
Adler couldn’t stand it anymore and asked the person next to him. Then the person next to him clicked his tongue.
“I think there’s a chance… that he’s one of our colleagues.”
“If you were my colleague…..”
Adler frowned.
“Are you talking about the messenger clan?”
“yes.”
The young messenger standing next to Adler smiled and nodded.
“I really don’t like you guys. It’s the same with your father’s disappearance. Didn’t you guys who were proud of your abilities join you and still have such unfortunate events? And now what? You guys are joining Guillaume Bald? Are you guys messing around with our Lantaric territory right now?”
“No. As you know our tribe of Arael is only a part of the herald clan. There are still foolish old colleagues here and there who have not accepted the gospel. We will try to persuade them.”
“Yes. It would be a good idea to persuade him. If you want to find the Emperor’s treasury.”
Adler snorted and twirled the gold key on his finger.
