    #122. Lantarik Entry 1

    “The Wendigo is gone.”

Guillaume Wald who had been waiting above with a fire lit was delighted to see Azadin and his party coming up. Brand shouted to Guillaume Wald in excitement.

    “A miracle! A miracle happened!”

“Oh yes. The Wendigo is gone.”

“No that’s not it. A real miracle happened! The angels responded to the call and saved the soul of the sacrificed person to the Nether’s reaper!”

    “yes?”

    “What are you talking about?”

    Medium asked Ismail.

“Well. It may be hard to believe but what that madman said is true. Azadin… tried to purify the corpse with the funeral rites of the Knights of Salvation but the corpse had already been captured by the Nether’s Reaper and had become a Wendigo and was resisting. Even if I smashed all the copies of the Book of the New Kings that I had I couldn’t purify it but when Azadin made a vow to the angels it was suddenly purified.”

    “….”

Everyone who heard that clicked their tongues.

“A miracle? The angels are already dead.”

Shati grumbled. She was a captive but she fought the approaching Wendigos with sword and axe in her hands and she stood trampling over their corpses.

“Medium. How have you been with Shati?”

“Yes. The Wendigo did approach but Shati and I managed to hold it off. But… is it true that a miracle occurred?”

“what do you think about it?”

“Well if that’s true shouldn’t we receive the sacrament from the Rescue Knights?”

    “Will that work?”

“Well if you were dead you would be dead. I don’t think the people of Hybris would accept our Aragasa as a saint. And you are the Emperor’s messenger. You won’t be a hospitalist now. And you who was happy about the odds and ends of the Knights of the Salvation Order don’t look all that happy.”

    “okay.”

Azadin smiled bitterly and gestured. Medium stepped back slightly as he watched Azadin send the signal.

“So Mrs. Liz do you know who this person is?”

Azadin put down the offering and unwrapped the cloak that covered him revealing his face.

“Okay then stop talking nonsense. I expected something like that when the Wendigo is asleep.”

Mrs. Liz said this and grabbed her staff. At the same time Medium prepared his bow.

    “…ha.”

    Mrs. Liz sighed.

“I’m not that stupid. Miracles are nonsense but no matter what you did you finally purified the sacrifice. It was amazing. It was truly amazing. If I try to resist you here I’ll die.”

    “Lee Lees!”

Sir Brock stepped forward in confusion.

“Wait a minute. What did my wife do?”

    “Sir Brock. This guy?”

    “That’s my little brother!”

    “….”

When Azadin looked at Mrs. Liz Mrs. Liz clicked her tongue.

“That guy approached me because he knew I wasn’t on good terms with my husband! He was talking to me like Bthumine was really a slut and offered to satisfy his physical desires!”

“So you killed and ate them? Then were the Were Rats of Nagawa and Mejeri just friends who happened to pass by? Aren’t you thinking of us as fools?”

When Azadin’s voice cracked with anger Sir Brok taken aback stepped forward to defend her.

    “It’s my fault. I cheated on you…”

    “No over there.”

“But can’t we save Liz somehow? Sure. How about giving her money?”

    “Keep quiet you idiot.”

Azadin unable to bear it any longer became angry.

“What on earth are you trying to do? You idiot. You used all kinds of sweet talk to seduce Fran who was your mistress and badmouthed your wife and now you’re saying you’ll protect her even if she kills your own brother and releases the grim reaper?”

“I’m just being honest! I really loved Fran and I really loved my wife!”

“Then your sincerity is not worth a penny! The importance of marriage the resentment of blood relations the sweetness of love! What do you know about your truth that cannot be repaid in any way?! You want to do whatever you want without sacrificing anything? In fact both Fran and your younger brother were sacrificed so I cannot tolerate such stubbornness!”

Azadin placed his hand on the hilt of his sword. Then Guillaumebald stood between Azadin and Lord Brok.

“As acting Count Lantaric please leave this matter to me. Azadin the Emperor’s messenger.”

    “…All right.”

    Azadin bowed to Guillaume Wald.

    “Sir Guillaume Wald.”

“Sir Brock you will return to me the fief of New Heights and its manors and become a monk and go to the King’s Church. As for Lady Riz I will seal away her magical powers and confine her to the King’s Church’s abbey.”

“You want me to spend my whole life locked up in a monastery as a sinner?”

    Mrs. Liz harbored hostility but…

    -puck!

At that moment an arrow struck Mrs. Liz’s face next to hers gouging out her eyeball. The arrow had been fired by Medium.

    “Gyaaaah!”

“Before the Emperor’s messenger! Sinner! Can’t you open your eyes?!”

    “Ugh! This little girl!”

“Why? Do you dare to test the messenger? Just believe in that cheap black magic and come at me!”

    “this…!”

Mrs. Liz grabbed her cane and glared at Medium but… she soon let go of the cane. She saw the cold reason in Medium’s eyes.

She realized that the girl had not just provoked her out of a momentary rage unable to control her emotions but had really coldly provoked her with the intention of killing her.

“Damn it! I get it! I’ve killed so many people one eye is enough!”

Mrs. Liz thought it would be better to live on even if it meant being confined to a convent than to risk her life in a hopeless fight.

“As expected of a wizard he’s not completely stupid.”

Medium let go of Mrs. Lees’s hand when she showed no more will to resist. She had hoped that Mrs. Lees would pounce on her but it seemed regrettable that she did not.

“Then Sir Brock will you accept it?”

Guillaume Wald checked Sir Brock’s will.

“Yes I have no opinion. Sir Guillaumewald Acting Count of Lantaric. I thank you for your mercy.”

Sir Broc agreed to break the vassalage and return the fiefs to their original owner Earl Lantaric.

    *********

The fog cleared and the tall fortress came into view once again.

Even though no one had said anything yet as soon as the fog cleared people began to return to the village cleaning the streets and putting the supplies they had not been able to take back into storage and locking them up.

Perhaps they were waiting anxiously outside the fog fearing that they would lose their property in a hurry to escape and then they quickly swarmed in as soon as the fog lifted.

They all called out Guillaume Wald’s name.

“The new Count of Lantaric Sir Guillaumebald has defeated the monster of the fog!”

“Great feat! Let us sing it for generations to come!”

The fame of Guillaume Wald who had defeated the Wendigo the winter cold and the fog monster was already spreading among the people.

“It turned out that Sir Guillaume Wald did a good job.”

Medium found the goats and horses that had escaped the Wendigos and fed them food and water and spoke a word. Azadin punished Medium for attacking Lady Liz without his permission by finding the goats and horses and taking care of them…

As soon as he got out of the subway he encountered a mountain goat and a horse so he didn’t get a proper punishment. It was too light a punishment for blowing out a noblewoman’s eyeball but Medium still grumbled.

“Isn’t that the reputation you were supposed to have? Azadin?”

“Do you think fame is even possible for us?”

“But you performed a miracle… and on top of that aren’t you doing too many things to Sir Guillaumebald? You didn’t even receive a single coin let alone the Emperor’s gold.”

“That man is not such a shameless person. He would be of help to us if he became Count Lantaric.”

“That may be true now but who knows what will happen later? Well it would be easier to just assassinate him then.”

Medium chuckled as he remembered how bad Guillaume Wald was at fighting.

“I told you to reflect on your actions for gouging out Mrs. Liz’s eyes but I guess that wasn’t much of a punishment.”

“But if I hadn’t attacked her then wouldn’t that woman have received a lesser punishment? Azadin knew that too so he gave me this punishment that wasn’t even a punishment right?”

“You were trying to provoke me and kill me?”

“If I provoke you. But then that woman noticed. She got so angry when she found out that I was deliberately provoking her to kill her but then she suddenly came to her senses.”

“That was reckless Medium. She was a dangerous sorceress and her husband wasn’t much of a threat but if we kill her with our own hands it will cause political problems.”

If Lord Brok voluntarily becomes a monk people will believe his sincerity but if not and Lord Brok is killed by Azadin’s party then the truth of the Wendigo incident and the incident where Lord Brok’s brother was sacrificed will all be questioned. People will suspect that Guillaumebald killed his vassal in order to seize this fief.

“I understand you are angry Medium. You are a member of the Etar bloodline so it would be best not to let your personal feelings take precedence. It is fortunate that Mrs. Liz is the only one with a good head on her shoulders and has given up resisting.”

“Yes. Well the political issues have been resolved well. But does that ugly Confucius have some political power?”

    “The person involved is listening.”

Guillaume Wald who had arrived here without realizing it was embarrassed by the Medium who was standing next to him and confidently evaluating him.

This impudent girl blows out the noble lady’s eyes and openly criticizes the count’s son Guillaume Bald… It seems that she is of a very high status among the messenger clan.

“It’s not like we received any Emperor’s gold from you so we have no reason to please you right?”

Medium was caught gossiping by the person involved but he still stood his ground.

    ‘Should I say it’s shameless?’

Guillaume Baldwin seems unlikely to agree even if the contract is made with the Emperor’s gold coins.

“You guys still collected all the copies of the New King’s Book right? You can’t say you didn’t gain anything.”

    “Oh my.”

Azadin clicked his tongue at Guillaume Wald.

“Birds hear what’s said during the day and rats hear what’s said at night. Don’t just say where it is. I’m not joking.”

    “…yes.”

Guillaume Wald who had shown amazing political acumen and decided the course of action for Lord Brock and Lady Leeds and who had taken sole credit for solving the Wendigo incident had no choice but to remain obedient in front of Azadin.

“I will give you the fame of defeating the Wendigo. Use it to build a political foundation. Then even Prince Adler will not be able to do anything he wants. Let’s let the rumor reach Lantarik first and then enter with pride.”

    Azadin suggested so.

The news that Guillaumevald had defeated the Wendigo a monster of fog and frost will soon be known to all the world and with that achievement the vassals of Lantaric will see Guillaumevald again.
