    #120. Wendigo 6

The men that Azadin was taking down Sir Jebeck Brand Ismail and the orc necromancer Scott had reinforced their winter clothing with additional blankets and were ready to descend into the deepest part.

‘You’re leaving the knight behind and taking the secretary with you.’

Guillaume Wald who was left behind smiled bitterly at his ridiculous situation. Didn’t they think that Brand was a better fighter than him?

But to be honest I was confident that I wouldn’t go down there.

Every time he fought his life was in danger and he barely managed to survive thanks to the high-quality armor made by a master craftsman. Even if he talked about the duty and honor of a knight he didn’t know when he would die if he went out to fight.

“Okay then let’s deal with the Wendigo as quickly as possible.”

    “Good luck Messenger Azadin.”

Guillaume Wald wished Azadin well and blessed him on his way.

    *********

As the group made their way down the frozen road they soon discovered that their belongings were piled up. They were not garbage that had flowed in through the sewer but clean supplies.

    “Oh I found a kiln.”

Scott discovered something like a wooden box and liked it.

    “kiln?”

“It’s a tool our orcs use to avoid being hunted. Judging by what we have here it must be Walter’s.”

“Hmm. It doesn’t have wheels so I don’t think it flies automatically. It’s something people carry around and ride?”

“Yes. It can go on narrower paths and stairs than a carriage.”

“It might be comfortable for the rider but it might be difficult for the person carrying it.”

    “That’s why I use undead.”

    “….”

“I mean I developed from there and now I use a wheelchair. But huh. I want to make a lot of money and have a magic carpet.”

“A magic carpet? Like the flying thing from old stories?”

“Actually it’s just floating slightly above the ground.”

“There is something like that? If there is a flaw I would like to see it.”

“It’s expensive. Oh of course if you give me a copy of the Book of the New King I can trade it for the magic carpet.”

Instead of getting angry when Scott said that Azadin interpreted what Scott said.

“From what I hear you must know someone who would give you a carpet if you handed over a copy of the New King’s Book. Is there a place where the Kurt Pantheon Union opens an oil market?”

    “Hmm. I misspoke.”

“You don’t really want to talk?”

“As you can see from that snakehead woman there are many who would call me a traitor if I revealed such information. I consider you my employer and am loyal to you but I can’t be like that forever right?”

    “colon?”

“Let’s call them that. No matter how much I hide my beautiful orcish appearance with illusions if I use necromancy or something you humans will be too wary of me. If I call you Captain wouldn’t it be possible to quickly let them know about our relationship and let their guard down?”

“It feels like you’re passing the responsibility to me.”

“As a captain I must take on that level of responsibility. It is an honor to have a great genius of the era like me as my subordinate…”

    “Ah. Quiet.”

Azadin spotted his enemy inside the tunnel. A group of furry antlered Wendigos wearing robes and large shoulder pads were approaching. They were originally Hobgoblins who had been carrying palanquins but had been transformed into Wendigos.

    “Grrr.”

The Wendigos picked up their battle axes exhaling cold air from their mouths.

    “head!”

Azadin threw a chunk of ice and struck the Wendigo in the head. As the Wendigo staggered with its neck snapped Brand rushed in and cut off the Wendigo’s legs with Walter’s spear axe.

    “Well done!”

Zibek also swung his sword along with Brand splitting the jaw of another Wendigo and breaking its collarbone with a thrust.

The Wendigo whose arms were dangling and unable to walk properly tried to blow cold air through its mouth. However the cold air leaked down through its broken jaw and its own body began to freeze instead.

Everyone shuddered as they watched the Wendigos turn into pillars of ice due to their own coldness. However this time too they managed to defeat the Wendigos without any damage.

‘If the numbers are small then there’s no problem. The problem is….’

Azadin shivered from the uneasy chill he felt every time he approached.

    Then Ismail said

    “I can see the altar.”

    “Can you see it?”

“Yes. Over there on the ice…”

    “ah.”

Among the ice hanging from the ceiling there were transparent icicles that reflected their surroundings illuminating the space below the waterway.

    “We’re almost there.”

Azadin held his breath and approached the ice channels peering down. He saw the Wendigo Altar the Altar of Fratricide.

Around the altar which was made of the bones of some beast and contained a terrible curse were wandering giant monsters that were different from the normal Wendigos. They were originally servants of the Spider Queen Atra and the Rat King Mejeri but they were transformed when they turned into corpses and became Wendigos.

Even Azadin couldn’t help but feel nervous at the sight of such a gigantic and threatening creature incomparable to the Wendigos that were usually created when people died.

“They’re too big and there are too many of them. Can’t we lure them out and deal with them?”

    “Let’s give it a try.”

Scott began to use necromancy to control the Wendigo which had been turned into a pillar of ice by Azadin’s group.

“Now they are using it openly.”

“Hey Paladin. I’m trying to save the world. Are you so dumb that you can’t imagine how many people would die if that Wendigo were to be released?”

“I tolerate it because I understand. But if someone doesn’t keep bothering you wouldn’t you be more likely to use the evil magic of necromancy?”

“You’re going to torment me every time you use your necromancy. Then whenever you receive help with that evil magic you should thank me and say “Thank you.” That would be fair wouldn’t it?”

    “….”

“Why? Is it too shameful for Lady Nari to thank an orc?”

“First of all thank you for helping me with the Wendigo attack earlier. Without your help I would have definitely suffered.”

“Ah… a grateful personality from there?”

Scott who was giggling as he listened to the gratitude of Lord Jibek took control of the Wendigo and sent it underground to the altar.

As soon as he did that the Wendigo originally a member of the Atra clan shot a thread from its tail and wrapped it around the undead under Scott’s control. Then in one breath it snatched it away like a fishing rod and smashed it in the air with its forelegs.

    “Growling!”

    “this.”

The ice broke and bizarre monsters emerged from underneath spider-like in shape but with antlers and long hair growing on their bodies.

Monsters that were once part of the Atra clan but died and became Wendigos began to climb up the ice wall from the underground passage and target Azadin and his group.

    -The hammer of condemnation!

Sir Zibek threw his mace and unleashed white magic. With a loud noise the ice wall collapsed and the spider wendigos that had been climbing the ice wall were swept away by the debris and fell to the ground.

But the giant spider Wendigo pushes itself against the collapsing ice wall and climbs up.

    -Wedge!

Ismail’s arrow landed in the spider wendigo’s mouth.

Azadin threw a block of ice and Ismail fired an arrow that hit the back of the spider’s mouth sending it flying straight into the spider’s mouth. The arrow came out backwards causing the spider wendigo’s head to fall back.

While the Spider Wendigo was still unconscious Brand ran with his spear axe and cut off the front legs that the Spider Wendigo had dug into the ice wall to climb up.

A wendigo spider with its legs cut off plummeted down stopping when it hit the wall with its antlers.

That actually made things worse. The wendigo spider with its head horns embedded in the wall couldn’t touch the ground and just swung its legs wildly in the air. That actually got in the way of the other wendigos.

“Okay. It looks like we’ve defeated them one by one. Let’s take a detour and approach the altar!”

Azadin avoided the spider wendigos and turned to the side to jump down the ice waterfall there. It was quite a height but Azadin stabbed his sword into the ice wall and slowed down as he descended landing softly on the ground.

    “Krrrrrr.”

Wendigos with long snouts like rats perhaps apostles of Mezeri greeted Azadin holding forward-curving scythe-like swords in each hand.

“You want to fight me with a sword?”

Azadin grabbed his sword and ran forward.

    -Kajas and the yellow crane!

Azadin’s body moves greatly horizontally and he swings his sword. The moment the storm-like force is transmitted to the sword it suddenly becomes quiet and only the refined sword strike remains.

It was a horizontal slash that sublimated the previous violence into a controlled speed in the area where the sword suddenly touched after running roughly.

    -Phew!

Azadin’s sword slaughtered the Wendigos who were Mezeri’s apostles. In addition as soon as he cut them down Azadin’s body slid across the ground and changed positions in an instant.

“Wow! If you write like that you’ll never run out of knives!”

Ismail clicked his tongue as he learned why Azadin was always using up his weapons so heavily.

“Stop it! I’m going to investigate that altar!”

Azadin asked his companions and jumped onto the altar.

    *********

The Wendigos radiate cold air freezing the surroundings. The cold air emitted by these horrific monsters mutated from the undead is as cold as a nightmare.

‘It’s getting harder to hold on.’

Azadin took a deep breath and circulated the blood throughout his body. His stamina drained but the cold was gone. He broke through the group of Wendigos and approached the altar.

“What will happen to the sacrificed offering on the altar… once the funeral is held!”

A sacrificer who fell victim to evil sorcery. If his death is entrusted to the benevolent angels of the three archangels that Azadin believes in and purified the Wendigo’s divine power that was used to activate him can be weakened.

Azadin was also a disciple of Elder Kazas who studied Nether magic so he was no stranger to Nether magic rituals. He pretended not to know anything in front of Lady Liz and the others and listened and asked questions.

Azadin found the body of a man lying beside the altar. The one used as a sacrifice to free the Wendigo was a young man. He was a servant of Lord Brock and he was a tall and muscular man.

As Azadin approached the corpse the Wendigos launched a concentrated attack on Azadin. However Azadin’s companions also launched a fierce attack repelling the Wendigos’ attacks.

    “good!”

Azadin secured the body of the sacrificed person and brought both hands to his chest. The stomach had already been ripped open the internal organs had been eaten away and flesh had been blown away from various parts of the body. These were traces of the Wendigo ritual that was activated through human sacrifice cannibalism and cannibalism.

    ‘That woman!’

Azadin felt his anger boiling over at Mrs. Liz.

She kept making excuses that it happened because she had no choice but when she saw the body she could tell it was all a lie. It was definitely not a coincidence or a mistake like she said.

    ‘This is completely intentional.’

Azadin frowned and began to consecrate the body.

“Archangel of wisdom courage and mercy have pity on the souls of those who are about to die and guide them on their way.”

    It was just then.
