    #11. The Tooth’s Clan 2

    “This son of a bitch!”

“I will curse you until I die!”

Those who had lost one of their two eyes hurled all sorts of curses as if the flattery they had been giving them just now was a lie. Among them there were many quite creative curses that impressed Azadin.

“It’s good to be energetic but make sure to wrap the wound well so that it doesn’t get worse. Wash it thoroughly. It’s important to wash the severed part of the optic nerve with alcohol. Don’t drink alcohol until you’re healed.”

Azaddin advised them not to aggravate their wounds in the future and dragged the goat away. Midiam and Ismail followed him dragging the goat away.

    *********

The goats walk well having recovered from their water and grass. Medium laughed as he looked at the ruffians left behind.

“At first I was surprised because I thought they would just let it go without any punishment. But after seeing what they’re doing I think this is okay.”

“Those who bully and plunder the weak will have to become weak themselves to understand how it feels. If you take away one eye the sense of perspective will decrease and there will be many difficulties in fighting in the future. Then the strong who plunder will change to the weak who are plundered and there will be ample time for repentance and repentance. People cannot understand others unless they change their positions.”

“So what you’re doing is not just saving their lives but their souls as well. You’re giving them a chance to repent. Well if it were other clansmen you would have just killed them but what good is it to save them? Oh but what if their wounds get worse and they die?”

“Well that can only be done in the afterlife. I am a powerless human so there is nothing I can do.”

Azadin was clearly a good man but he was by no means a fool. He punishes those he wants to punish and even accepts the risk of losing his life as a result.

In some ways it seems more cruel than those who kill cleanly.

“But is it okay if I leave them alive? They now hold a grudge against you.”

Ismail still seemed uneasy perhaps disagreeing with Azadin’s methods. But Azadin simply shook his head.

“Well I might be able to get down the mountain alive now but even if they denounce me it’ll be too late. But I’m worried about it.”

    “yes?”

“I heard that Count Kazel is looking for a copy of the New King’s Book. There is no reason why he wouldn’t want a copy of the New King’s Book but shouldn’t a nobleman of that rank be able to tell the difference between right and wrong?”

“I heard on the way here that Count Kazel is quite high up in the line of succession to the throne of Korasa. However he lost the battle for the throne and lost most of his lands becoming Count…”

Ismail relayed the rumors he had heard as he arrived.

“He was pushed out of the battle for the throne politically but he obtained a copy of the New King’s Book and is trying to climb back up somehow with magical powers isn’t he?”

“That’s the strange thing. King Korasaar is younger than Count Kazel. He’s in good health. If he still wants to get a copy of the New King’s Book well… he’s a dangerous person. We’ll have to be careful until we leave Count Kazel’s territory. I guess I’ll have to take off my mask.”

The falcon mask the symbol of the herald leaves such a strong impression that it is impossible to forget once seen so they had to take it off in order to move around while concealing their identity.

“Ah I finally get to see your bare face.”

“Don’t like it too much. It’s so ugly that you can’t look at it.”

Azadin said so and took off his mask. At that moment both Midiam and Ismail were shocked.

When Azadin’s mask was removed his face was a beautiful one with a graceful nose and sharp eyebrows. Except for the long horizontal scar where his eye should be.

    “Who doesn’t have eyes?”

    “So Azadin…..”

The name Azadin refers to an eyeless evil dragon from the old myths of the Heralds.

The mythological eschatology handed down to the Jeonryong clan was that the mythical age would end when the incarnation of the god of death the dragon Azadin of Muan and the righteous angel Arael continued their struggle between good and evil and finally on the last day of the world the two would perish together.

The name of Azadin the blind dragon was very fitting for him.

“But you didn’t look blind at all.”

“But you can see that… little… medium.”

“You can see without eyes? Why?”

“I don’t know. It’s just that I was born blind and could see. That’s why I was given the name Azadin.”

Azadin put the mask in his bosom and took out the staff hanging from the saddle of Kerim’s mountain goat.

“Thanks to that I can easily pass through anywhere. When I pretend to be blind the soldiers just leave me alone. So when I went alone there were no problems… But this time since you guys are with me I hope you will speak to me properly.”

Azadin clicked his tongue as he said that.

“But why should I be with you guys… Let’s go to a safe place and split up from there. Okay?”

“Oh dear. Can’t you just accept me as a servant? I’ve already heard a lot about it.”

    “No. I said it’s annoying.”

Azadin ignored the flirting Midiam and took out his bow and arrows.

“It would be strange for a blind man to carry a bow so put away the arrows…”

Azadin put away his arrows and walked away leaning on his cane.

It was the appearance of a wonderful blind pilgrim.

    *********

    Emperor’s Road.

It was a road created after Emperor Yaeslat unified the continent.

This road which runs through major cities across the continent was built as a marvel of engineering and magic and despite being built over three hundred years ago it still looks as good as new without any special maintenance.

The King’s Church changed the name of this road to the Continental Road but the people still feared the power of Emperor Yaeslat who built this road and in places where the Church’s eyes could not reach there were still those who revered the Emperor.

There were pilgrims on that road.

The King’s Church that serves the Yaegas Gods of the Archangel Faith of the Salvation Knights.

Regardless of the doctrines of these churches the people of Hybris believed in reincarnation that is by accumulating virtues while living they could be reincarnated into a higher status.

The pilgrimage to accumulate merit was an act recognized by both the King’s Church and the Knights Templar. Azadin and his party walked the Emperor’s Way pretending to be pilgrims.

“Hey I told you to stop looking.”

“But now that I think about it you’ve hurt your eyes. You were originally a very handsome man but it looks like you got hurt in an accident. You really are handsome aren’t you?”

    “what?”

“I think it’s better to see yourself as scarred than as having dull eyes. My imagination fills in the places where your scars are. That’s why the character really looks good.”

Medium looked at Azadin’s face in admiration.

    “You sound like Arael.”

“Saying something like Arael. Did she say that too?”

    “no.”

    Azadin shook his head.

“You’re the one who hurt my face.”

Azadin rubbed his wound and his teeth chattered.

    *********

At the intersection of side roads leading from the eastern inland to the Emperor’s Road which was the entrance to the Emperor’s Road there was a village with over 300 households.

In the north where the population density is low it could be considered a fairly large city but in the central region where the population density is high this village of about 300 households does not even have a decent name.

People called this town the ‘Eastern Gateway’ town. The town was currently occupied by a mercenary band brought by Tarki the illegitimate son of the Count of Kazel who searched through the luggage of the townspeople and passersby looking for copies of the New King’s Book.

Of course if the mercenaries searched through the luggage and found that they did not find a copy of the New King’s Book they would not repackage it neatly. Rather if there were valuables or money in the luggage they would calmly take them away.

In other words this was open plunder.

    *********

As its name suggests the Eastern Gate Village also served as a gateway to the Emperor’s Road. There were inspections and searches taking place at the gate and Midiam and Ismail were shocked by the sight.

    “uh?”

    “Obviously last time…..”

When they came through that gate there was no such rampage. It was a place where you could simply pay a toll and pass through but now mercenaries who looked like bad guys to anyone were openly looting.

    “hmm.”

Azadin who was pretending to be blind and walking with a cane was also embarrassed.

‘Could it be that I harmed Prince Kozel and that’s why I’m acting like this? No it was only yesterday that I harmed Prince Kozel so how could it have been known already?’

At that moment merchants nearby came up to talk to Azadin.

    “Hey can’t you see?”

    “Oh yes.”

    “These kids?”

“These are orphans on a pilgrimage with me.”

Azadin said so and made the sign of the cross a symbol of his faith in the Order of the Angels of Faith.

“Oh really? If you take care of orphans then you must be a noble.”

“I am not a nobleman… I am just a wandering pilgrim in search of a miracle.”

“Oh my goodness. May the protection of the three archangels be with you.”

The merchant made the sign of the cross in front of Azadin.

“But what on earth is going on?”

“What’s going on? Haven’t you heard the rumor that a copy of the New King’s Book has been circulating recently?”

“Are you talking about the New King’s Book?”

“Yes. Rumor has it that the Heralds stole the Shinwangseo and made copies and those copies are now appearing all over the world. The illegitimate sons of the Count of Kazel are looking to find them. They say that if you find a copy of the Shinwangseo you won’t be sent to the king’s church and you’ll be given a knighthood or something.”

The inheritance law of the Eight Kingdoms follows the principle of primogeniture. The eldest son inherits all the lands without dividing the titles and kingdoms and those who do not receive the inheritance are lucky enough to become officials or vassals and serve under their brothers….

If there are no fiefs to divide up one has no choice but to become an adventurer a merchant or a priest in the king’s church.

Being a priest in the King’s Church may have a fancy name but it was a position with many duties and little benefit so it was avoided by everyone.

The illegitimate child of a nobleman may not be in such an easy position but it is a much freer and more comfortable life than being a knight of the King’s Church. So if you don’t want to be forced to become a monk you have no choice but to search for a copy of the New King’s Book with your eyes wide open.

Or they might go on a rampage of looting under the pretext of finding a copy of the New King’s Book.

    ‘What’s wrong?’

The problem is that Azadin has a copy of the New King’s Book. He keeps it well hidden in his bosom but seeing them go through people’s luggage is no joke. Right now in front of Azadin’s eyes a merchant is having his jewels hidden in his underwear stolen by mercenaries.
