#108. There are too many corrupt nobles 1

Guillaume Wald told his men to immediately relieve the bridgehead but his vassal’s men insisted that it might be a trap and that they should wait and see what happened before crossing.

At first glance it seemed like a reasonable argument. In order to land a large force they had to know the situation first and the Kora River was not such an easy river to cross right away.

The problem was that the next morning the sharp-eyed sentries reported:

    ‘Bridgehead positions completely destroyed!’

This meant that Count Lantarik’s long-held ambition had been dashed. The annexation of Salasma had failed and instead Count Lantarik isolated in enemy territory was in danger.

In addition a terrible rumor was circulating among the soldiers. Rumors that Count Lantaric’s army had been attacked by monsters near Salasma and that the Count had gone missing began to disturb the camp.

“They are just knights with their mouths worse than slaves. They were afraid to cross the river at night so they voiced their opposition and because of that we lost the bridgehead with our eyes wide open and no one is taking responsibility! In the end the one who has to take responsibility is the commander and a noble right?! You foolishly let your father die with his eyes wide open you idiot! I immediately said that we should cross the river and rescue him but you trampled on my opinion and now you say that the blame is mine! Are you all ignoring me because I’m ugly?! The vassals think I’m a joke!”

Guillaume Wald advanced forward nervously cutting the grass.

“Okay. This is a good place to cross!”

    “yes?”

“You and I! Let’s cross the river like this first. I’ll watch the situation with my own eyes. Don’t worry. I’ve been trained by the knights.”

Guillaume Bald gave up on persuading his disobedient retainers and brought only the adventurers loyal to Don to cross the sea and scout out the Salasma camp himself.

“No Your Majesty. Hehe. Didn’t you hear what the shamans and knights with great spirits said last night?”

“We are also against you crossing the river. We came here because you said you were going to scout.”

Last night the most inspired shamans and paladins heard the roar of a terrible beast.

The roar that Nightcrawler emitted as he absorbed the orc necromancer Scott McGreen had an effect that could be heard from half a day away.

“Are you guys doing this too? Do you want to be reported to the Cell Sword Guild for disobeying orders?”

    “Ahahaha.”

    “That’s difficult.”

“Then go and prepare to cross the river. There should be ships nearby. Arrange for them.”

The adventurers who were weak to rumors and jinxes had no intention of persuading the stubborn Guillaume Bald and prepared to cross the river as instructed.

“I confirmed that the boat is here. Pay the fisherman and commandeer the boat.”

That’s when Guillaume Wald said that.

    “huh?”

As they made their way through the bushes they came across a group of adventurers camping out. But…

    “Huh? Mr. Brand?!”

    “Sir Guillaume Wald?!”

There was Brandt dressed in bloody armor.

“No Mr. Brand?! What happened? I heard you disappeared without a word but what the heck is this…?”

    “Who are you?”

The masked man next to Brand asked him.

“You are the eldest son of Count Lantaric. You are the one I taught to write.”

“I am Guillaumewald Count of Lantaric and eldest son of Baron Garnahair of Adyrov.”

    “ah….”

Instead of the masked youth the knight next to him stepped forward.

“I am Jibek a knight of the King’s Church.”

    “however….”

    “Orc!”

The members of the Cell Sword Guild were startled and alert when they realized there was an orc among their group.

“Ah this guy is our prisoner.”

Guillaume Wald was surprised when the masked man said that.

“Wait a minute. Have you guys crossed the Kora River?”

    “yes?”

“Are you perhaps from Salasma? What happened to Count Lantaric? I would like to know the rumor. If you can give me detailed information I will reward you.”

    “Yeah that’s it.”

    The situation has become awkward.

    *********

‘I’ve been so absorbed in camping and training.’

Azadin regretted having such an unexpected visitor while they were camping. Should he have set up a guard?

However the opponent is the son of Count Lantaric. If any suspicious men suddenly stand guard within their territory they have a justification to investigate and subdue them at any time.

If we say that we are not Salasma but just nearby then we will have another headache. We will have to come up with an excuse as to why we are camping by the river.

    That’s when Brand spoke up.

“The Count’s army was attacked by monsters and scattered. The Count is missing.”

From Brand’s perspective Count Lantaric was an enemy with whom he could not live under the same sky. Naturally he would not have good feelings toward his son Guillaume Bald… Nevertheless Brand spoke with the polite attitude that a former vassal would show to his master.

    “yes?”

“We saw from a distance. A considerable number of undead attacked the troops. We were so scared that we ran away but when morning came we saw that the people across the river were still so it was not difficult to tell that something was wrong with the Lantaric army.”

“I see. I understand. Then sir would you hand that orc over to us for questioning? If the monsters attacked Count Lantaric’s army I think that monster would know something.”

Guillaume Bald asked for the orc necromancer Scott McGreen. Azadin shook his head.

“Oh that guy is out of his mind.”

    “It’s not perfect?”

“Yes. The age of Jupiter is coming you know.”

As Azadin spoke he snapped a reed leaf and snapped his fingers. The reed leaf flew with great force and hit Scott in the face.

“The end of the world! When Jupiter’s gravity reaches Hybris the old kings of the Nether will return!”

“I think he may have gone mad from using black magic.”

“…Then why take them as prisoners? Why don’t we just kill them here? Orcs cost a lot of money to feed.”

When Guillaume Wald said that and drew his sword Scott flinched. He felt a murderous intent in him.

‘Hey you’re losing your mind while acting? You’re going to die if you keep doing that.’

Azadin said stepping forward to cover Scott’s body.

“I know a shaman who is good at telepathy. I will extract the knowledge of this person through him.”

    “Who lives there? That is?”

“No that’s… You know Shamans are a bit like that right?”

When Azadin made that excuse Guillaume Bald glared at him suspiciously.

“But why are you wearing a mask…”

“That’s because there’s a scar on your face.”

“Hmm? Would you like to take it off just in case?”

Azadin looked embarrassed as Guillaume Bald gave him a suspicious look.

“I hope you understand. My father suddenly lost contact and said that monsters appeared nearby… I ask for your cooperation.”

Guillaume Wald looked at him with suspicion but spoke politely. However his actions were not polite. The members of the Cell Sword Guild next to Guillaume Wald exchanged glances with each other and drew their weapons all at once.

    “hmm?”

Is it trying to attack? Azadin was on guard but then he felt something strange. The direction of the killing intent was different.

Indeed. One of the members of the Cell Sword Guild suddenly struck Guillaume Wald on the back of the head.

However Brand who was watching extended his spear and kicked away the weapons of the Cell Sword Guild members. Brand who was well-versed in the situation of the Land of Lantaric had already anticipated this situation.

    “Be careful!”

    “Ugh?!”

Guillaume Wald was startled when he suddenly saw his subordinates attacking him.

    “Traitors! Traitors!”

    “….”

The Cell Sword Guild members drew their weapons without answering and surrounded Guillaume Wald.

    “You guys can go.”

“Our only goal is Guillaume Wald.”

The Cell Sword members chattered and spoke kindly to Azadin and his party.

“You little brats! Why are you doing this? I paid you your salary properly.”

Guillaume Wald glared at the Cell Sword Guild members in confusion.

“Because the true successor to Count Lantaric is Prince Adler.”

Brand who was watching said so.

    “Adler?!”

“Yes. Prince Adler shares the Count’s darkness but Lord Guillaumewald knows nothing and only knows the Count’s superficial aspects doesn’t he?”

“What are you talking about! Adler is just my youngest brother! He used to frequent my father’s study!”

The Cell Sword members snickered when they heard that.

“As expected of a former secretary you know a lot.”

“So what? Aren’t you going to run away?”

“Are there just a few of them?”

There are over 20 members of the Cell Sword guild and they are all well-armed. On the other hand Azadin’s group appears weak on the outside.

Sir Zibek in his heavy armor certainly looks formidable but Azadin is in light armor Midiam and Ismail are still young boys and girls Shati and Scott are in robes instead of armor and Brand is wearing ridiculous rag armor. The veteran mercenaries are confident of their victory.

“Run away. It’s none of your business. No one will be grateful if you save Prince Guillaume Wald anyway. Lantarik already belongs to Adler.”

“But if we run away from here won’t they frame us for the murder of Prince Guillaume Bard?”

When Azadin said that the members of the Cell Sword Guild burst into laughter.

“He’s not stupid. But wouldn’t it be better to run away like that than to die right here and now?”

“Oh really. Why did you get involved in someone else’s family feud? Brand. You know this place right? It’s your choice. Should I save Guillaume Wald? Or should I just ignore him and leave?”

Since Azadin knew nothing about the County of Lantaric he left the judgment to Brand who knew the place well.

    “Let’s save Prince Guillaume Wald.”

    “If that’s the case.”

As Azadin nodded the Cell Sword Guild members began to laugh.

    “Kick. Are these guys crazy?”

“I think you’re confident in your skills because you have one paladin.”

“In a field of reeds along a river like this even a horse can’t show its strength. This kind of mud is a place where experienced men win.”

    “Yeah I agree with that.”

Azadin jumped into the reeds. Not only Azadin but also Midiam and Ismail jumped into the reeds and disappeared in an instant.

    “What is it?”

    -Wedge!

Instead of an answer an arrow flew.

Surprisingly the arrow came flying from the side of where Azadin had jumped. Azadin had bent the arrow so that it flew from a different location than his own.

    -puck!

One of the Cell Sword members was struck down by an arrow flying from an unexpected direction.

    “100 million?!”

“What! I clearly went that way!”

    “It’s an ambush!”

The Cell Sword Guild members were confused. They could not even imagine that this arrow was fired by Azadin who had just jumped into the reeds.

Then the arrows started flying again. There were too many arrows for the three people who had just hidden to shoot and they started pouring in from all directions.

    “Eww!”

    “Oh it was a trap!”

The Cell Sword Guild members misjudged the number of archers as the arrows were flying too fast and too often.

Surely they would not have guessed that there were only three people hiding in the reeds and mistakenly assumed that there were many archers lying in ambush nearby.
