Night of the Soulless Heathens – 103

#103. Nightcrawler 5
“They’re going out to Orc.”
Azadin watched the scene through the darkness. An orc from the beachhead garrison was moving in a wheelchair with nagas standing behind him.
“Do you see any familiar faces? Chatty?”
“Wait a minute. I can’t see you from this distance.”
As Shati said that she took something out of her bosom. It was a pair of glasses.
“uh?”
Azadin was surprised to see the sight.
“Those are glasses. Wow I’ve never seen them before.”
“Because all of our Aragasa have good eyesight.”
“Be quiet. The eyes of the outside world may be a little nearsighted but they can read movements incredibly well.”
Shati frowned at the Nagas in the garrison using her glasses. She didn’t know for sure but she could tell where they belonged. But telling them that would be treason against the Nagas.
‘How can I cover it up with a lie? It can’t be done right?’
That’s when Shati thought so.
“Just by looking at it it looks like you’re thinking bad thoughts?”
“This guy is useless so I’ll just kill him.”
Midiam and Ismail began to suspect Shati.
Shati was upset that he was so casually talking about killing her. Azadin Brand the knight Zibek and the messenger clan’s servant Midiam Ismail hated Shati so much. Wanting to kill her wasn’t just a passing remark it was a sincere thought.
“No you healed me for a little while. Healing. Wasn’t it incredibly useful?”
“But if you lie so blatantly…”
“I haven’t done it yet!”
“If you haven’t done it yet are you saying you will do it in the future?”
In this situation Shati had no choice but to ask Azadin.
“You guys do something about it! Why are you all so short-tempered?”
“So can you figure out who those guys are?”
“My eyesight is bad so I can’t see very well. But um… it’s probably the Shinwangjinseo recovery team.”

“The Shinwangjinseo Recovery Team? Does the attack here have anything to do with the Shinwangjinseo?”
“The Book of the New King will pop out if you humans are attacked.”
“What does that mean?”
Azadin was taken aback by Shati’s words but it was not as if he had no idea what was going on.
Among the books of the New King that he has acquired so far there are some that he obtained when people were suffering and were told by the dead who had already gone to the afterlife. There are also some that he obtained from the scene where Mejeri’s apostles were torturing abusing and slaughtering humans.
“What is the principle? Where does the Book of the New King exist in the first place?”
When Azadin asked Shati shrugged her shoulders.
“I don’t know the principles either. I just know because my superiors told me so. If you’re a researcher who studies real magic you’ll know.”
“Then would it be faster to catch the orc over there and ask him?”
Azadin saw the orc come out in a wheelchair perhaps to climb up a nearby hill to get a first-hand look at the situation after the undead failed to make much headway.
Azadin had anticipated this situation from the beginning and had placed Midiam and Ismail in ambush here.
“It’s within an arrow’s reach. What should we do?”
Ismail asked Azadin’s intentions.
“Shoot with the intent to kill. They won’t die like this anyway.”
As Azadin spoke Ismail and Midiam enchanted their arrows and shot them. Azadin immediately caught the arrow so it was like three of the Heralds were firing a double bow at one orc.
Shati felt sorry for the sight. These guys’ arrows have almost the same power as javelins. If you surprise attack with such arrows even a Naga with great regenerative power would be fatally wounded. Not to mention an Orc sitting still in a wheelchair.
I don’t want to keep getting dragged around by the messenger clan Azadin but looking at the situation it looks like it’ll end in a surprise attack by them.
But something unexpected happened.
*********
Many orcs choose to stay as still as possible in order to extend their lifespan. However most orcs are unable to achieve this dream. They have to be very active to meet their enormous food needs which means increasing their muscle mass.
In this environment necromancers have been studying ways to use necromancy to minimize the strain on their bodies.
But that also meant he was vulnerable to death. Lying down to avoid using his body or sitting in a wheelchair like Scott was bound to leave him vulnerable to surprise attacks.
So he needed a powerful protector to guard against surprise attacks. Scott made a deal with the evil and volatile demon Nightcrawler to protect him in times of crisis in exchange for a huge price if he succeeded.
A necromancer who can handle Nightcrawler must be a master of necromancy so there aren’t many of them even among the orcs. The reason Scott is called a genius necromancer among the orcs is because he can handle Nightcrawler with ease.
But then the shadowy evil spirits took action. Six arrows flew towards him two of them especially with magic causing even the formless black evil spirit Nightcrawler to groan in pain.
“omg?!”
Scott was shocked when he realized that he had been ambushed. The arrows flew again but Nightcrawler appeared and swatted away the arrows. The black shadowy demonic figure swung his hand to block the arrows.
“stop!”
Scott summoned flesh-bearing zombies and ghouls to create a barrier around himself and try to send Nightcrawler away. He was grateful that they had stopped the ambush but Nightcrawler demanded a huge price for just appearing briefly.
‘There’s no need to block the attack with Nightcrawler after noticing the surprise attack!’
Scott sank Nightcrawler and contacted the Nagas.
“Surprise! The enemy is here you snakeheads!”
“what?”
“Where are you?!”
The nagas popped out.
*********
“Oh no… I should have killed him this time.”

Azadin shuddered at the thought of the opposing orc necromancer surviving this attack. He had fired six arrows in a concentrated attack only to see a giant black shadow appear and block the arrows.
The necromancer was more capable than I expected. I was wary of him because he was an orc but I never expected to meet someone this skilled here.
“What is that? Isn’t that some kind of enormous monster?”
That shadowy evil spirit was so terrifying that even a brief glance at it would make the hairs on your skin stand on end. If you were to fight it head-on it would be a monster that would cause you enormous damage.
“A monster of that level would be a burden even to the caster. Let’s keep shooting!”
As Midiam spoke and fired an arrow the enemy was now on full defense. The corpses of the villagers surrounded the orcs and defended them and the barrier was perfect. No matter how strong the bow of the Herald Clan was it could not pierce the corpses and wound the necromancer from this distance.
“This won’t work. You guys keep attacking! I have to get closer.”
Azadin said so and looked back at Shati.
“Huh? Me? It’s impossible! It’s absolutely impossible!”
Shati was captured by Azadin and forced to cooperate but it was only through coercion. In order to survive under coercion she could reveal some information or use regeneration magic but she could not cooperate in fighting the Nagas.
“It’s okay Shati. Your presence alone will help me a lot. Please transform into Naga.”
Azadin spoke softly and put his arm around Shati’s shoulder.
“Eww! You warm-blooded animal! Where are you touching me!”
Shati was horrified as she saw Azadin pick her up.
“Come on let’s transform into Nagato. You don’t want to be mistaken for a human and get killed by your comrades do you?”
“Oh shit!”
Shati shed her human form and transformed into a Naga. Then Azadin carried her and headed towards his opponent.
“….”
For a moment Shati thought that she could kill Azadin by tightening her tail. However as if Azadin had known that Shati would think that way he pulled out the dagger from his belt and hid it inside his wrist.
If you start to tighten your grip with your tail I’ll rip you apart with that dagger right away.
‘Should we just sit back and watch the situation without making a fuss?’
While Shati hesitated Azadin carried her around and ran.
*********
“huh?”
Scott saw a man running towards him and a woman carrying him.
“Help me!”
As the man spoke he raised his sword behind him as if to protect the woman and made a motion to slash away the flying arrow.
“…?”
“What is that?”
“You can tell just by looking at it that it’s a snake head? Then does that guy have a snake head too?”
“But our agents aren’t around here? And civilians wouldn’t be there either?”
But isn’t it obvious that he’s bringing a woman out?
“Isn’t that the one? The one dispatched to Count Salasma?”
“Oh really?”
There were also Nagas who had been dispatched as sorcerers and agents on the condition of receiving the letter of the new king from the Count of Salasma.
“Are you saying there are survivors among them? At this time?”
“Hmm.”
I thought about it. It seemed right given the circumstances but why did it appear at this particular time?
“Let’s just give Wonho some support first.”
“But don’t let me in.”
“Tch. If there was a captain he would know.”
The Nagas grumbled and cast a spell. The vines grew and formed a barrier behind the man carrying the Naga.
*********
‘I’m screwed.’
Shati was shocked to see what Azadin was thinking while carrying her. The man was trying to sneak up on her by pretending to be a Naga himself.
Since Shati has shown that he is a Naga the other Nagas will regard Azadin as a human transformed into their own kind and will not even be able to imagine that he is a real human.
‘This is a big deal!’
Even though her life is threatened by Azadin she is trying to deceive her own people by using her so she will just sit back and watch. If she does that the Nagas will not leave her alone later. If she doesn’t do something now she will be in a difficult position even if she returns to the Nagas.
‘But if I do anything I’ll die right away.’
Azadin is not unarmed. He has a dagger hidden ready to tear her apart at any moment.
‘Well if I reveal this man’s identity now I’ll just die and he’ll get away with it right?’
Shati who had seen Azadin’s abilities up close knew full well that even if she risked her life to reveal his identity in the current situation she would only die alone.
‘I think it would be better to expose it after we go into the middle of a crowd of Nagas and undead. But I don’t know if this is a rational thought or if I’m just scared of this man.’
Shati was unsure of her decision. Meanwhile Azadin approached the orcs and nagas.
“Thanks to Phew I survived.”
“for a moment!”
Then the orc necromancer spoke to Azadin.
“Put your weapons down and don’t come any closer. Can we talk from a distance?”
“….”
The orc necromancer was wary of Azadin and kept him from approaching. It was a great relief for Shati.
‘They say orcs are smart and it’s true. They really are. That’s fortunate.’
And then the Nagas came.
