Night of the Soulless Heathens – 1
by Jessie@AFNCC
#Prologue. Siblings who are in a state of mutual slaughter
Yaegas the Eight Kings of the Gods.
They are the saviors who liberated humans from the land ruled by the evil old gods and placed eight thrones on this continent.
‘When a righteous king sits on the throne the light of the great kingship protects the world.’
The occupants of the throne were called god-kings because of their great power and were worshipped by all.
But then the emperor appeared.
Emperor Yaeslat.
He subjugated the other god-kings who were his brothers and monopolized all eight thrones of the Yaegasu clan. And he needed people who could kill the Yaegasu clan at his command…
Those who remembered the grace of the Eight Kings refused to stain their hands with the blood of the new kings.
At that time five sailing ships were shipwrecked on a distant continent and the people on board were a people who called themselves ‘Aragasa’.
When the emperor approached them and made them his confidants they did not hesitate to kill the god-kings and get their sacred blood on their hands.
People despised and loathed them calling them the Emperor’s Heralds….
When the emperor died the empire was divided into eight kingdoms again.
The messenger clan also fell.
*********
After the fall of the empire the Herald Clan lost all power and was persecuted. Even within that clan there was one sibling who was particularly persecuted…
These siblings were the children of a traitor to their clan.
The girl’s name is Arael.
The boy’s name is Azadin.
These were the main characters of the myths that the Jeonryong clan believed in before coming to this land.
The angel of justice Arael and the dragon of Muan Azadin are mutually exclusive beings who fight each other from the beginning to the end of the world.
The fact that they gave the siblings the name Sanggeuksangsal (meaning “murderous murder”) gives us an idea of the hatred their clan has for them.
However the girl named Arael had outstanding appearance outstanding skills powerful magic and an arrogant personality so as she grew up she became someone that no one could ignore.
On the other hand the boy named Azadin was born blind and helpless.
*********
The spirit of Sangmu was sometimes like a cruel whip that beat the weak so the environment was extremely harsh for the weakest boy in the clan.

As the boy groaned from physical and mental wounds a figure came to visit him.
“What fools are rolling gems in the mud. No one knows the true value of this little thing. Tsk.”
He held out his hand to the boy.
“Rejoice my dear. You have been chosen as the disciple of this great Kazas. I will make you the strongest messenger.”
“yes?”
“What do you mean ‘Yes?’ Now is the time to shed tears and be moved. It is not common for me to receive a disciple.”
“The strongest messenger? Even more powerful than Arael?”
“Yeah. If you defeat your older sister you’ll be called the strongest messenger right?”
“You’re not my older sister you’re my younger sister?”
“Have you seen this impudent guy? Do I need to know more? Just move on. Will you become my disciple? Or not?”
“Can I also be a rescue worker?”
Surprisingly the boy was a member of the Herald Clan but he also had faith in the Knights Templar.
The Knights of Salvation’s belief that anyone regardless of social status can wield the great power of white magic by practicing the virtues of courage wisdom and mercy served as the spiritual pillar that enabled the boy who could not use magic to endure this harsh persecution.
“Rescue drivers? Those idiots? Of course you can. I don’t really recommend it though.”
*********
Rumors briefly circulated in the Sanctuary that the mysterious elder Kazas known only by name among the Herald Clan had taken Azadin the symbol of powerlessness and incompetence as his disciple.
The other messenger clans were very curious about the inside story but a long time passed without any news.
And on the 10th anniversary.
Elder Kazas used his authority to force Azadin into the 108th position without due process.
The position of Emperor’s Herald of which only 108 can exist in a generation was a curse to the Herald Clan but it was also an honorable position.
Many people tried and competed to become a messenger but only a few managed to become one. The entire clan revolted at the absurdity of forcibly appointing the incompetent Azadin as the messenger.
However Azadin had already reached the age of 108 and had set off for the southeasternmost border.
#1. The Demon of Gold 1
The girl received a gift from her fiancé.
It was a gold coin with the face of an unknown man engraved on it.
“What is this?”
The fiancé looked around cautiously. There were only rocks and sheep all around him but he spoke fearfully fearing that someone might hear.
“This is the emperor’s gold coin.”
“The Emperor’s gold coin?”
“Yeah. Do you know the messenger clan?”
“Oh soulless ones?”
The Herald Clan is a legendary race known by various hideous names including the Kingslayer the Soulless and the Ominous.
The name of the uneducated girl was often heard in stories intended to frighten children.
“Yes. This gold coin can command those soulless ones. But be careful. They say that just having it will get you executed by the inquisitors of the King’s Church.”
“Huh?”
The girl was so surprised that she almost dropped the gold coin.
“Why are you giving me such a dangerous thing as a gift?”

“Haha. I’m surprised. But you never know. If something happens to us… They say if you draw a triangle on the ground and put a gold coin in the center the Heralds will come and help you.”
The fiancé said so and smiled.
“I hope that doesn’t happen though.”
*********
There was a severe drought that spring.
Because there was not a single drop of rain until the sowing season the wells dried up and people began to run away in fear.
However the Count of Kazel who ruled them considered the villagers’ flight a serious crime and began sending soldiers to discipline them.
The leader of the soldiers was Prince Cozel the son of the Margrave of Kazel a powerful wizard said to have the blood of the new king flowing through his veins.
He hung villagers who tried to escape from trees and confiscated their property. He also commandeered the village hall to make it his camp and brought village girls there to help him with the work.
The people were even more terrified when they saw a woman who had been taken away and was raped by a band of bandits the soldiers of the Count who were no different from a group of bandits and returned in a miserable state.
The girl decided to run away with her fiancé’s family. However Prince Kozel the son of the Count who was truly a wizard was blocking their escape route.
“That’s why there’s a problem.”
Kozel pretended to shave his beard with the blade of his longsword and looked at the terrified peasants with contempt.
“Even beasts know grace so why are you worse than beasts? You are all descendants of the gods and you are alive because you have received grace from us. Is there such an ungrateful case as running away in fear because it doesn’t rain?”
“That’s not it.”
“Please at least the children….”
The girl and her fiancé’s elders came forward and begged but the soldiers rushed out laughing and pierced the children with their spears in one swift motion.
“stop!”
At that time Prince Kozel stopped them.
“How can you be so thoughtless you idiots? You really don’t know what fun is.”
“Oh Your Majesty.”
“We are ignorant and don’t know. How can we have fun?”
The soldiers kicked the children who were impaled on spears and pulled out their spears grumbling like rascals.
“First have people climb up onto a slightly tall tree. Then have the child support the parent’s body and the wife support the husband’s body.”
“ah!”
The soldiers were impressed by the plausibility of Prince Kozel’s words. Soon they skillfully hung a noose on a large maple tree at the village border.
How could they hang people so easily from a willow tree whose branches are not very strong? How many people have they hung before? Hanging one or two people would be out of the question.
“Ah… No. Safia! Run away!”
The fiancé was terrified by the approaching soldiers and tried to make the girl run away but at that moment the sharp blade cut through her flesh and she cried.
Kozel split her fiancé’s back.
“Ah! If I take care of it in advance like this I’ll die too soon… What a mistake.”
Prince Kozel approached chuckling and holding a bloody sword.
“It’s okay. This guy will have a rope tied around his waist. Then he will last just as long as the others.”
The grumbling soldiers tied a rope around the waist of their bleeding but still living fiancée and a sandbag around her ankles and hung her from a tree.
A girl with a noose around her neck and her fiancé’s family with young children still gasping for breath as they are crushed like rocks beneath them.
“Hey peasant woman. Support your spouse. If you hang on like that you won’t be able to hold on and your blood vessels will burst and you’ll die.”
They placed the girl at her fiancé’s feet.
The girl couldn’t move from that spot to relieve her fiancé of the burden.
“Okay hold on to your spouse. Don’t move. Got it?”
“Kilkilkilkil….”
At that moment a knight with a stern expression among the soldiers muttered.
“Do not shed the blood of the new king too easily.”
“huh?”
Prince Kozel who had been muttering stopped.
The man was a northerner in his early thirties looking much older than he actually was with silver-gray hair and a gloomy expression. The silver hair was a sign of his Yaegasu blood but the man’s hair was closer to gray or white than that.
His eyes which were more gray than blue always seemed to be looking into the distance rather than at the person in front of him and he gave off a sense of fatigue and weariness all over his body. However he also had an unusual sharpness hidden inside him and he was like an old sword in its sheath.
“No who is this? It’s not Lord Jibek. It’s my swordsmanship teacher.”
“Do you really have to go to such lengths to punish people? If you are a noble descended from the blood of a god you should at least maintain a modicum of dignity.”
“Preserve your dignity? That is not for me to say. If this matter does not leak out won’t my dignity be preserved? Or what? Are you Lord Zibek going to go around talking about my affairs? You a paladin are you going to ruin my dignity as a noble bloodline recognized by the King’s Church?”
“You can’t hide the truth forever. Is it really that hard to maintain your dignity?”
“I’m also a very hot-blooded person. I prefer to let out my feelings when I want and keep my mouth shut. That’s why…..”
“Should I harm you?”
Armed soldiers began to surround the man known as Lord Zibek who had raised objections.
“No don’t do that. Look teacher I’m saving your life because I have feelings for you since we were kids. Do you understand?”
“….”
A look of bewilderment and pain appeared on the insulted knight’s face.
“whip.”
As Prince Kozel shouted a soldier brought a whip.
He hit the girl with it.
-match!
The girl groaned and staggered in pain as her flesh burst. Still she did not fall but struggled to support her fiancé’s weight.
“Okay is this okay? Teacher let’s live life enjoying ourselves.”
“….”
“Okay then peasant woman hold out as long as you can.”
*********
The Count’s son Kozel and his soldiers hung the girl’s family from a tree as they tried to escape and then took their property and left.
The girl stood there bearing the weight enduring all the pain and humiliation in terrible pain.
“Safia I was wrong… Run away.”
“folio.”
The girl shook her head calling her fiancé’s name.
Blood dripped down her feet. The pain from her wound was getting worse.
Even if she ran away and abandoned her spouse she felt that she could no longer survive.
“….”
Suddenly the girl realized that she still had the emperor’s gold coins. She had kept them in a pocket sewn into the inside pocket of her clothes.
“Will the Emperor’s messenger really come from the messenger clan?”
She drew a triangle on the floor with her weak toes wondering.
All you do is draw a triangle on the dry dirt and blood drops down onto the dry dirt.
She painstakingly drew a triangle then carefully took a gold coin out of her inner pocket while supporting the sandbag and dropped it onto the triangle.
Then light comes out of the gold coin and flows softly across the triangle drawn on the ground.
“ah!”
The story was true. The girl was surprised and called her fiancé.
“Have you seen this?”
“….”
But her fiancé didn’t answer.
The gold melts and is sucked into the ground and after a while…
An owl rarely seen here flew in and landed next to the poplar tree.
[Petitioner who yearns for the Emperor’s justice.]
A voice was heard from the owl.
[The nearest messenger will arrive in about two days. Please bear with us until then.]
“These two days?”
The girl was astonished.
There is no way her body or her fiancé’s body could endure that.
“What happens if I can’t hold out?”
[The petition will be cancelled and the gold will be given to the messenger as a deposit.]
“That kind of…..”
Before the girl could rejoice that the magic had come true she found herself in for two of the most difficult days of her life.
*********
In the dry heat that dries the ground to the point of breaking even stones the girl endured a time harsher than death.
She stood there unable to sleep holding a sandbag her wounded body still wounded. When the sun set a human shadow approached her.
A cold liquid was soaked on the lips of the girl who could no longer see perhaps because it was dark or because her vision was blurry.
It was water.
“Who who….”
“fizzle.”
The unknown person asked her to keep her mouth shut and placed a pole underneath her to relieve her weight. Suddenly the girl felt her shoulders lighten and she sank to the ground.
“Can I eat it?”
“….”
“Unfortunately your husband is unlikely to survive. His wounds are deep. But you may be able to survive if you get treatment.”
“you are?”
“I also came secretly. If the master catches me I will be in trouble.”
“….”
The girl realized that he was a knight named Zibek the only one among the soldiers who had resisted Prince Kozel.
“Eat.”
The man put some dried fruit in the girl’s mouth and sat down.
“Can I treat your wound?”
“….”
The girl was confused. Her mind was already too hazy to understand why someone who was part of the enemy would suddenly show mercy.
But one thing is clear: we must somehow hold out until the messenger arrives.
“Please.”
“okay.”
The man poured water cleaned her wounds with a bandage and applied ointment.
“It’ll show if I bandage it. Get some sleep. I’ll stay here and watch until the sun comes up.”
The girl did not believe the man but her eyes closed on their own and she fell asleep.
