    < I don’t want to make it a draw (2) >

    “It took a long time.”

“Aaron that guy is rambling on and on… It’s taking up a lot of time.”

“That’s right that gentleman. He has a habit of stretching a story that could have been told in one sentence into ten.”

After finishing my secret meeting with Secretary of Commerce Aaron I immediately went to see Rockefeller.

It was to explain in detail what was discussed while he was away.

“Hmm. Is that what Aaron said?”

    “okay.”

Special refugee and vice presidential candidate cases.

The topic of electrons was not particularly associated with money so it did not interest Rockefeller.

    “George Padilla…..”

    But the latter was different.

The position of Vice President is the second highest position in the U.S. administration after the President.

    “hmm.”

George Pardee was a politician with a slightly progressive bent.

A person who was closer to the Roosevelt faction than the New York capitalists who were traditionally the mainstream of the Republican Party.

“Well the Prince and I both agreed to support George Pardee for the next Vice President position so it’s not a bad deal.”

It shouldn’t have been a pleasant surprise but George Pardee was someone I had a special connection with.

In fact the position of Vice President did not have any special authority other than to succeed to the position in the event of the President’s death.

Rockefeller accepted Aaron’s proposal without much objection.

“I think George Pardee is interested in the Vice Presidential job too. This deal will score him big points.”

There are two ways to become Vice President: through your own efforts and through having someone else feed you the position.

The two are on different levels.

It makes a big difference how much say I have over George Pardee in the future.

    ‘At least three times…’

Won’t George Pardee grant my request?

    Any request.

“Well it would only increase my influence a little in the West.”

“Hey. Is that really all it will be? The vice presidency isn’t something that can be sold for cheap.”

George Pardee is a former governor of California and current U.S. senator.

Moreover the current governor Hiram Johnson is seeking George Pardee’s Senate seat.

It seemed possible that he could secure several special privileges through a secret triangular deal.

‘I can recommend a candidate for the next governor or I can put my people in the positions of secretary of state or lieutenant governor.’

Or winning a public project that will directly generate money.

There were many proposals to make.

Rockefeller glanced at me with a slightly envious expression.

“By the way if I had left a little later I would have found myself in an awkward situation.”

    “Maybe so?”

“It is exactly as expected by the prince.”

Before this meeting I had already discussed it with Rockefeller.

I roughly predicted what Aaron would say.

‘It was my idea for Rockefeller to leave in the middle of the meeting.’

Although retired Rockefeller remains a tycoon in the oil industry.

Whenever a related article came out his name would always be at the forefront and it was certain that Roosevelt would also mention Rockefeller’s name in his commentary.

‘I’m a foreigner so I can be seen as slightly out of touch with this controversy. But Rockefeller is different.’

It was a meeting that appealed to the American people’s suffering due to inflation.

    In that place.

Imagine if Rockefeller newly installed as chairman of a ‘charitable’ foundation had kept his mouth shut and refused to comply with the government’s request.

Because it was a situation where there could have been plenty of gossip if the article was reported later.

I ordered Rockefeller to leave before the main topic could begin.

Fortunately Rockefeller followed my advice and was able to escape the meeting safely without falling into Roosevelt’s trap.

“The prince really has great insight.”

Rockefeller clapped his hands and looked at me with an expression of admiration.

I quickly brought up the next topic feeling slightly humbled.

“Let’s listen to the compliments later and come up with related measures. Through this meeting we were able to find out a lot of hidden information.”

“I could feel with my own skin that Roosevelt’s current situation was very very urgent even as I left the meeting in the middle of it. It seemed quite serious.”

    “okay.”

For those in power murderous inflation is a nightmare.

Southern states which already have strong Democratic support are experiencing large-scale protests denouncing the Roosevelt administration’s failures.

It was larger than the financial crisis of 1907 when stocks crashed and unemployment soared.

This coincided with the lame duck period at the end of his term and served as a catalyst for the rapid decline in Roosevelt’s influence within the administration.

“Perhaps the Democratic Party is behind the protests in the South.”

    “I guess so.”

When protests against the ruling party occur the force that benefits the most is the main opposition party.

The current Democratic Party is full of racists and is very incompetent.

We were not a group so ignorant as to fail to seize this heaven-sent opportunity.

“They will want to use this opportunity as a springboard to gain a victory in the next presidential election.”

“Roosevelt is in a corner. Aaron’s proposal proves it.”

“Indeed the prince’s words are right seeing as he reached out to Morgan whom he despised so much.”

Rockefeller paused for a moment and then said:

“What’s important here is my future course of action.”

“Yes. At this point the way to respond will depend on whether you accept Roosevelt’s proposal or push him further.”

    Rockefeller is troubled.

It would be a poor choice to leave everything up to Rockefeller when he is in charge.

    That’s why.

I started to troll Rockefeller to get him to move in the direction I wanted.

“But remember if you push Roosevelt too hard your beloved Republican Party could collapse.”

I’m tempted by what Aaron suggested but I’m more worried about the next presidential election.

If prices rise too much the American people may veto the Republican Party itself.

“The Democrats especially Woodrow Wilson who is now the governor of New Jersey may win the next presidential election by taking advantage of the fighting between our forces and Roosevelt’s forces.”

Rockefeller was a businessman who was a Republican at heart.

You might ask how a businessman can have a party affiliation.

    Americans of this era.

Furthermore 21st century businessmen often manage their businesses while revealing their political leanings to the public.

Since Rockefeller like other Americans did not hide his party affiliation and made it known to the public I brought this up indirectly.

“If you want it you can push it further and further until Roosevelt gets into trouble….”

“Or are you saying we should take a brief truce at this point?”

    “okay.”

    Time is on our side.

Money lasts forever as long as you don’t do useless things.

Political power lasts at most four years.

At most it’ll be about 8 years.

Roosevelt was an exception and lasted about ten years but if we wait another year the power he has in his hands will scatter like grains of sand in all directions.

“It is difficult to touch the power of the living but it is not so difficult to aim a sword at the power of the dead.”

“I guess it means to look forward to the future.”

“I’m sorry but that’s for the best.”

Thanks to the customs that have been passed down in American politics Roosevelt was never indicted in the future.

If his cronies are guilty of corruption they will surely go to jail.

I mentioned this and suggested a brief truce to Rockefeller.

    “okay.”

As soon as I finished speaking Rockefeller began to pour whiskey into his glass.

It must be because my head is complicated.

Because it must be stopped even though it could completely bring down Roosevelt.

I wonder if that’s the kind of behavior that is being displayed.

“I thought I had it all figured out but I feel a little empty having to let it go at the last minute without finishing it.”

“…··Unfortunately the world doesn’t turn the way I want it to.”

    “That’s true.”

Rockefeller glared and emptied his glass full of alcohol without any side dish.

“Furthermore while I have fallen so far Morgan continues to rise.”

    “…··.”

For Rockefeller not only was Roosevelt a target of revenge but Morgan a fellow New York capitalist and soul rival was also a target of punishment.

‘It’s understandable to be angry about the current situation.’

Antitrust laws broke up Standard Oil into dozens of companies.

Rockefeller himself was forced to step down from his management duties.

On the other hand Morgan who can be seen as his soul rival is still upright.

Moreover given the current situation it is highly unlikely that Morgan’s US Steel will be forced to split.

At least to those who do not know the future.

‘I have benefited greatly from this affair but Rockefeller has not.’

That’s why Rockefeller looked slightly anxious.

Because he thought that the revenge he wanted might not be successful.

“Don’t worry too much. Morgan’s downfall is only a matter of time.”

    “…··Is that really so?”

Despite my consolation Rockefeller poured himself another glass of whiskey without saying a word.

I too silently placed my empty glass next to the one Rockefeller was pouring making a silent gesture for a drink.

    Gulp-

People tend to behave similarly when they meet someone they want to become close to.

When the person you’re talking to yawns you want to yawn back.

Because when you stretch you tend to do the same thing over and over again.

I too imitated Rockefeller’s drinking behavior and identified with him.

I unconsciously let him know once again that I have a colleague he can trust and rely on.

“Haven’t you been preparing diligently all this time?”

“Are you talking about that political collusion card?”

    “okay.”

    I nodded in agreement.

“We should start to sway public opinion. Let’s cleverly link the anti-monopoly law and the central banking law and tie them together.”

“And then you turn the tables by publishing articles about the relationship between Aldrich Morgan and me?”

“Yes. The best revenge we can give Morgan is to sabotage the central banking law.”

Morgan is a huge prey like a tiger.

It took some time to set up traps in the right places to bring him down.

“I must deal with the Baron for sure before that.”

“That’s right. If the two of you help each other you might end up in trouble.”

The situation is that the Baron has come to America.

The amount of damage caused by this short selling incident will be considerable.

Even though they are somehow holding on now the stocks of the old Standard Oil Company will continue to rise as time goes by.

Someday we’ll have to ask Rockefeller and me for help.

‘How long can I hold out?’

It also means that the moment the Baron leaves America is Morgan’s memorial day.

I looked outside smiling bitterly inside.

‘The summer heat is on the rise in New York.’

Will the Baron surrender before this fall?

I finished my conversation with Rockefeller while calculating this in my head.

    * * *

I was taking a break and drinking a Bloody Mary for the first time in a long time.

I was reading diligently to see what books were out recently.

    “%^$%(*((*%%$$%!!”

    That was when.

I heard a loud noise from the front yard of my house.

“I told you not to let anyone in because it’s Sunday. Who is causing a commotion outside?”

    “that is…··.”

Choi Hyun-woo looked at me with a slightly embarrassed expression.

“A stranger came to see you Your Majesty.”

Judging from the fact that he says he is a foreigner he doesn’t seem to be a Korean resident.

‘Are you part of Baron Rothschild’s party?’

Are you finally thinking of surrendering to me?

I glanced out the window curious.

    “huh?”

Outside an Asian man was scuffling with the people working at our house.

It is highly unlikely that a British baron would have fathered an oriental illegitimate child.

Of all the days of the week on Sunday of all days.

Who is the guy making a fuss in front of my house?

    “majesty.”

    “Tell me.”

“The one who was causing a commotion in front of the house a little while ago.”

As I was quietly listening to this with my arms folded Chief Secretary Choi Hyun-woo spoke up.

“They say he came from the Qing Dynasty across the Pacific. To be exact from Guangzhou.”

    Choi Hyun-woo swallowed hard.

I feel like my mouth is dry because I speak so quickly.

    “for a moment!”

When I heard the name of the foreigner my head started to hurt.

Because someone I know from history came to our house.

“So the person causing a commotion in front of my house… is that author named Sun Yat-sen?”

“Yes. He came to see you without an appointment saying he really wanted to see you. What should I do?”
