Chapter 96 Is this the first spell you’ve learned?
by Jessie@AFNCC“Welcome, Duncan’s Tailor Shop, what can I do for you? Ah …… you …… I remember you.”
Just as he entered the tailor’s store, before Jess could adjust to the darkness of the interior from the brilliant sunlight, he heard the owner yelling at the top of his lungs.
The store owner is looking over and says, “You’re the assistant who tried to buy that robe I had here last time, aren’t you? How about it, has your boss decided?”
“My boss has ordered a dress from Dalaran.” Jace says, “It’s expected to be delivered by Winterfest next month, I’m sorry Mr. Duncan.”
“That’s just business, that dress has been stored with me for almost a year anyway, I don’t care if it stays here a little longer.” The owner said helplessly, “So this time you are?”
“Wanted to show you something.” Jace pulled a scale from his pocket and placed it on the table, saying, “Can you see what it is, sir?”
The owner took the glasses, looked at them carefully, and said, “Naga’s scales, lad, did you pick them up?”
Jace didn’t respond right away, he was a bit surprised why Ursula didn’t immediately say that he had picked up the scales when this tailor store owner could tell, did this dress maker know more about these materials than the alchemist?
“Eh.”
“This kind of scale is not very valuable.” The boss said, “We don’t accept it here, maybe you can take it to the Dwarf District to ask, the armor maker still likes this kind of Naga scales, the color is good, can decorate the key parts of the armor, and also can borrow this scale to use the gimmick of Naga scale armor, bluffing and cheating those who don’t understand. But in the mage area …… what should be is what, those mages sometimes see more clearly than we do, the pitfalls and deception and what not, often only us these poor vendors are pitfalls ah.”
Strange, it’s all Naga scales, how come there’s such a big difference between Ursula’s place and here?
Jace asked, “Why? I’ve heard people say that Naga’s scales have magical effects that increase the power of frost magic and water magic …… Could it be false?”
“It is true.” The boss said, “But it is not this kind of scale that is being talked about, this kind of scale …… is still relatively easy to pick up, and people who often walk on the beach can occasionally see this kind of scale even if they have never seen a naga in their lives. Because it is shaped very Cao bright, very special, so it is very conspicuous on the coast, easy to road those shells mixed together to be taken back, so even some armor builders are acquiring it just over the pier.”
“The ones that really have magical power are the naga’s breast scales, the larger ones, the few special scales that cover the neck and chest from the back, and it’s said that those scales are replaced very slowly, and very, very few of them can be picked up, and that’s the one that we generally refer to as the naga scale.”
“Anyway, I’ve never seen a Naga before, and I don’t know if those scholars of theirs are right or not, all I know is that if I want to make a trench coat, I can only use that kind of scales, and these scales are basically useless except for decoration.” Jace was a bit depressed, he literally knew nothing about this aspect, mixing those scales straight all together, how was he going to separate them again now?
At noon, he ran to the library to look for records about naga scales, luckily there were quite a lot of records and pictures about this, he roughly recorded the characteristics of different parts of the scales, shapes and so on, and drew them onto a piece of paper, ready to take it home to rely on it to differentiate between normal scales and expensive sellable ventral dorsal scales.
After the drawing, he realized that he was about to run out of paper in the house, and that Saeuno was close to filling all of it with writing, but at the moment he had nothing left over that he could buy.
But in a few days it would be payday, his first paycheck since becoming an assistant, 10 silver coins, and all of a sudden he could buy another set of paper and ink or something.
As for those scales, he would sell them if there was an outlet, and wait if there was no outlet, he didn’t want to rush.
After settling for a bit of lunch in the Wizard’s Sanctuary on free refreshments, he was squatting Marin in the garden at the entrance to the Wizard’s Sanctuary, and he would have to report the matter to the Wizard’s Sanctuary about the Jackal Alchemy Laboratory, regardless of whether or not the little king was willing to go ahead and call in his manpower to settle the matter.
After waiting a short while, Marin, who had emerged from the Blue Hermit, saw Jace from a distance.
“Master Marin.” Jace stood up, “I have something important to tell you.”
Marin approached, clutching a loaf of long bread, and asked, “You’re back from the Wild West?”
“Yes.” Jace said, “And I found the Jackals’ alchemy room, and I have enough evidence that they are making poisons in it.”
The old mage frowned and asked, “What evidence?”
Jace said, “There’s mourning grass in the herbs they’re collecting, is there any chance they’re targeting Moon Creek or Sentinel Ridge for poisoning or something?”
“Not impossible.” Marin said, “I’ll write to contact the King’s Venerable this afternoon, but I think the King may still have to send someone to confirm, so I’ll keep you posted if there’s any follow-up news.”
Jace asked, “Master, could there be some other force behind the scenes driving the Jackals closer to Stormwind City step by step?”
Marin replied, ”We have been investigating the orcs recently, and indeed we have neglected the west. But when you put it that way, it is true that the jackals are stirring throughout the country, and there are rumors of infestations and incidents of victims everywhere …… However, Jace, the Sorcerer’s Sanctuary is not currently in charge of jackal affairs, and even over at the Stone Fortress, our focus is only on providing magical assistance to the defenders, not on solving the jackal troubles. “
“So, that’s not my focus either, I’m having a hard time answering you. But if we do investigate some kind of poison lab as you say, I’m afraid we’ll have to take responsibility, just, work on your magic first, Jace, you’ve only just become an apprentice, aren’t you worrying a bit too much?”
Marin is right, no one will let you in on these things even if you know about them until you reach a certain level of strength and are recognized.
“Right.” Marin said as he pulled a ring out of his pocket, “Give me back your assistant’s ring, take this and remember to go to Master Andromas within a week to pick a class, he’s on the top floor of the Wizard’s Sanctuary, it’s just that if you’re going to start your classes, it might not be until after the Winterfest, but pick it ahead of time and prep it well so you don’t not understand anything when class starts. “
–The Precepts of the Apprentice.
Jace looked at the runes on it and the capitalization of his initials, feeling less joyful then when he had just become an apprentice.
“By the way, Jace, your light magic ……,” Marin said, holding his arms, “Has there been any progress in the past two days?”
By all means, promote yourself first.
Jace took a step back, extended his fingers and lifted them up, murmuring “Lil Yusa!” .
At this point, he had some experience with focusing his concentration, and the Lightning spell was smoothly focused, a brilliant arcane glow hovering at his fingertips like a light bulb.
The arcane glow was quite bright, causing many students in the garden to look this way. But instead of looking at the arcane glow, Marin stared intently at Jace’s eyes and lips.
A minute had passed, but Marin hadn’t called a halt, and Jace could sense that he found he wasn’t much fatigued from summoning such an arcane glow, and likely intended to test try to see just how long he could keep it up.
Two minutes passed …… Two minutes and thirty seconds passed, and Jace seemed to feel the drain on his mana.
That’s when Marin suddenly snapped his fingers – snap!
Jace looked over at the old mage, and the light spell in his hand flickered for a moment, but did not go out.
“Okay, Jess.” Marin said, “You can let it dissipate!”
Jace clenched his hand and the arcane light dissipated with it, he even felt a few fingers of his right hand stiffen a bit, he had concentrated too much to summon this light spell.
Jace took a deep breath and asked, “Well, Master?”
Marin looked Jace in the eye and asked rhetorically, “The Light spell, was that the first spell you learned?”
