Chapter 89.
by Jessie@AFNCCIf you hesitate now, it will be too late!
Jace pointed to the location of the arcane flash and immediately recited, “F’eek ……”
Mid-sentence, he immediately felt as if a thread in his brain had collapsed, his mouth felt as if it had been violently clasped by something, and the muscles of his entire body were thrown into a severe twinge as the Shadow energy he had just evoked was suddenly disrupted!
This familiar feeling …… is counter magic!
Jace quickly regained his senses after realizing what had been done to him.
But he had already fallen back continuously from the burst of arcane energy that had just blasted through him specifically to interrupt his chanting, and collapsed on the steps before entering one of the rooms.
Naga’s shadow had just materialized and was rapidly approaching this way, and Jace scrambled up and barreled towards the side of the house.
Damn it, it must have been the stick in his hand that revealed him for what he was – a spell caster – that made that naga ready to counter himself.
Jace rushed to the side of the house holding onto the wall, the sound of rustling naga scales rattling the dirt behind him approaching rapidly, this banshee was running much faster than he thought and could do invisibility spells …… or flash spells?
The probability was that it was a flash spell, after all, invisibility wouldn’t speed up the speed of running, and it wouldn’t be possible for the opponent to come from the beach to the middle of the house in one go. He wasn’t able to tell the difference between these two types of magic yet, in any case, this Naga had some magic that allowed him to move quickly, so just running like this was useless.
Jess ran to the back of the house and was seeing one of the upper windows open.
Before the naga could come around and see him, he climbed the wall with a full leap, barely catching the second-floor window with a couple of stomps on the uneven boards.
I have to say, he was physically much, much better in this life than he was in his last.
Climbing through the window he went in and crouched, listening to the rustling movement below and swept past, not daring to probe for fear that Naga would find him hiding in the room.
But that naga knew he couldn’t be invisible or do any other displacement magic, and circling around the house would surely make him think he was already inside.
If he waited for Naga to leave to jump from here, once he created a sound, he would be done for as soon as Naga came back.
His only chance, then, is to wait in this house.
Jace took the broken knife he’d bought from the Western Springs camp from the back of his waist, took his shoes off and leaned close to the wall, listening carefully for any movement as he waited for Naga to enter the small building.
It grew quiet around him, so quiet he could hear his own breathing.
Slowly, he allowed his breathing to settle as well, making as little noise as possible, and it wasn’t long before all Jace could hear was the faint ringing in his ears-perhaps caused by the arcane blast from earlier.
Jace thought about the tactics he could employ if the naga came in – all centered around a surprise attack behind the wall.
Grid had said that no matter what kind of mage she was, as long as she still needed to recite a spell, she must be afraid of getting close. Not to mention the fact that this naga was long and tall, and must not be able to exert her movements in such a cramped cabin.
Jace would gain an unparalleled advantage if he could just succeed in his surprise attack and cut whatever it was down on her, as long as he could get away and hide again, and wait for the naga to leave when she couldn’t stand to wait on her own, or wasn’t willing to pay the price any longer to leave of her own accord.
Thinking about it, Jace was even a little worried that the naga would come into this house.
If she doesn t come in, Jess intends to wait here until dawn, and as long as it s dawn …… Naga should roll away anyhow, right?
A wooden house, unlike a stone house, where any movement could cause an unpredictable creaking of wood, and Jace didn’t know how long he’d waited when, suddenly, he heard a little unusual chugging noise downstairs.
The snake man came in.
Maybe it was a slight mental preparation that made her decide to enter, maybe it was because she hadn’t guessed until now that Jace might be in this room, maybe she had quickly searched the rest of the house only leaving this one, either way, she was in.
Almost on the verge of falling asleep, Jace reenergized himself and gripped the knife in his hand, thinking to himself that if he had expected to have to deal with such a difficult foe, he should have spent a little more money on a better one. But there was no choice now.
The rustling was getting closer, and Jess could hear what sounded like her coming up the stairs.
At that moment, an extremely sharp scraping sound reached his ears, so sharp that Jace found it a little hard to hear.
The sound was close enough to be on the second floor, most likely the occasional odd sound of scales scraping against a wall.
After the sound appeared, the rustling of the scales also stopped, perhaps Naga also realized that the sound he made was too loud, and it was easy for the enemy to grasp his movements.
Jace could only bet that this naga had never had the experience of fighting an enemy in such a cramped room before.
After a few minutes the rustling continued, Jace was almost holding his breath this time, in fact he had deliberately lowered his breathing from earlier, it was getting a little hard to hold it in at the moment, if Naga didn’t show up he might actually have to take it.
By this time, the rustling had reached the next door!
Just outside on the porch ……
Jace stared at the doorway, the knife already in his hand.
As soon as you see something appear, slash through it flat!
When he saw a shadow shifting in the doorway, he took a step forward the knife was already swinging, but he saw nothing! Nope, on the floor!
What he heard was the sound of a positive strip of serpentine rubbing on the floor, and by the time that sound reached the doorway, the slightly cocked front half of the serpentine had already walked through the doorway, and only half of his tail now remained at Jace’s feet!
Seemingly sensing some movement behind him, Naga jerked back!
Looking at the female naga’s face up close made Jace break out in goosebumps; her eyes were as big as two leaves, horribly widely spaced, and there were only two holes where her nose had been, but her lips were as bright as if they had been smeared with a divine shade of lipstick.
Her narrow jaw and thin face with smooth skin that should have been the outline of a beautiful woman had several completely inhuman features nestled in the center, sending one straight into the valley of horror.
But Jace was not at all shocked by this terrible appearance, he decisively swung his sword, a chop directly cut off half of Naga’s tail, Naga completely did not expect this guy to strike so decisively, and howled shrilly in pain.
Jace scurried off to the other end of the corridor, and the naga cried out as it caught up to him, scratching frantically with its sharp, sharp claws, scratching the walls as they creaked and crunched, but missing Jace entirely.
She couldn’t get a good grip on her balance with a big chunk of her tail broken off, and despite coming on strong she hit the wall a couple times in a row, never quite catching up to Jace.
“Lowly warm-blooded beasts!”
All Jace could hear was the hissing of the naga echoing throughout the house, he was dizzy from the sound, the siren’s roar must have been a magical sound with a shocking effect.
He covered his ears and forced himself to hold back for a while, and when he came back to his senses again all he could hear was the commotion of crashing against wooden walls and random yelling and screaming all over the entire second floor, and that naga had gone completely insane.
One more time, just one more time.
Jace crouched in a corner with a view of the aisle, striking again as soon as the serpentine came by, this time slashing her straight to death, chopping off her head! Chop the neck!
The last raid was so perfect it made him think he would be able to pull off the same trick, yet it didn’t take long for the frantic movement outside to stop.
The entire second floor was filled with the smell of blood and fish, had the snake man died from a serious injury?
Even if he were to die, Jace would not go out, he would sit here and wait until the serpent man must bleed to death …… he would never be the one to take the initiative.
He had just made up his mind, however, when he suddenly heard a low chatter from somewhere in the other room; the other man was moving to use the spell again.
