Chapter 70: The company will set you up.
by Jessie@AFNCCOne moon was already hidden behind the Red Ridge hills, the other was about to set, and in two or three hours it would be light.
I remember last night when I got down on the wall and looked down, the sun hadn’t even set yet.
How long had he been frozen? Had the night passed so quickly?
Jace couldn’t tell anymore if the fight had lasted longer or if he’d stayed seated longer after it.
It was the Colonel Todman who asked the question, and there was nothing left in his eyes of the contempt with which he had previously looked at an unintelligent lad.
“Yes …… I sent it.” Jace nodded and said, “Shortly after you guys left, the jackals came and I was besieged.”
“What did you signal with?” The soldier behind the colonel asked as he kicked the severed limbs of the jackal on the ground.
Jace froze for a moment, yeah, what did I signal with?
Fireballs, no, flare guns, there were no flare guns here, damn it, who had time to think about how to explain it afterward in an emergency like that? He scratched his head and looked around here.
The soldier asked, “What are you looking for?”
“I’m looking for …… looking for ……” Jace said suddenly, “Scrolls, they’re scrolls, I brought fireball magic scrolls from the Wizard’s Sanctuary, I had originally wanted to use it for defense on the road, since I hadn’t learned magic yet, and I used the fireball magic scroll to inform you guys, and I thought there should be some left, but ……”
The argument seemed quite convincing, and none of the soldiers doubted it, when the colonel asked again, “You killed these jackals all by yourself?”
Before Jace could answer, the Colonel picked up the black, burned to a rotten stick-like sword, looked it back and forth, and asked, “What’s going on here?”
Looking at the sword, Jace only felt cold to the point of being unbearable, even wrapped tightly in his clothes it was hard to bear, not only had he exhausted his physical strength, but he was even severely overdrawn from the inexplicable enchantment.
He had all but opened his mouth to reply, but the sudden cold made him stop shivering and make it almost difficult to answer the Colonel’s question.
It was hard to change for a moment before he said, “I don’t know, they’re all dead, I have to …… kill all the jackals that creep up if I’m going to live.”
“That sword I don’t know.” Jace swallowed, he was going to dump the jackal.
“That …… sword suddenly burned up, it must be dark magic.”
“He was right, like the evil magic of the jackals.” One of the soldiers looked at the sword and said, “I can smell the fishy stench of the Shadow, just like those orcs, Colonel Todman. We weren’t able to find the dark mage, maybe he just lured us away with some kind of magic and then participated in the attack himself. These savage jackals, they didn’t think they could win with swords, so they tried to burn his weapons, and if we had come back any later, the consequences would have been unimaginable.”
“Look at his hands, damn …… this poor brother.”
“Mr. Jess Sesso, sir?”
Someone tapped Jace and he looked up, Colonel Todman was looking down at him.
“You know, you saved the stone fortress along with the brave soldiers of our company, and the soldiers down there tell me that if you hadn’t drawn the attention of most of the jackals with your fire up there, they might all have been killed. All the other overlook towers were knocked down first by the jackals, and only here …… did it not fall because of your heroic resistance. It’s been much more grueling here than I expected, and I’m having some trouble …… I can’t even begin to imagine what you’ve been through tonight.”
“A number of our men were wounded and fell, but the stone fortress still stands.” Colonel Todman said, “This matter must be reported to King Varian.”
“Get some rest, Jace Sesso, it’s almost dawn, and I suppose you’ve used up all your strength, your eyes are all bloodshot and you look almost like an orc.”
“His hand needs to be treated, the burns are not bad.”
“Get those mages, the priests, to help.”
“A lot of people are wounded right now …… The priests may have to wait a little while before they can come up, we also lost a mage and found his body in the forest.”
“Martin Harrower, a student of Master Morgans, who appears to have had his head cut off by jackals.”
“Were even the mages killed?”
“Unbelievable, here’s this big teenage kid killing seven or eight jackals all by himself.”
“He seems to be a Lordaeron.”
“O Kingdom of Lordaeron ……”
“General Turajan is also from Lordaeron.”
Listening to the noisy conversations of the soldiers around him, Jace only felt a little heartbroken.
It wasn’t because of the jackal attack, honestly, after experiencing life and death with Greed over and over again, he was much more calm now than he had been before.
What he hadn’t bottomed out on was the darkness that had been suddenly energized by himself, the fact that his shadowy secret would be discovered by the soldiers of the stone fortress, or even more.
To be honest, he would rather this matter not be reported to Stormwind City, if this matter became too big and someone noticed his secret, then the one who would immediately be expelled from Stormwind City would not be Morgans, but him.
Yes …… there is also Morgans, as a scholar who studies shadow magic in private, will he notice his difference? If this matter reaches the king, as an incident that concerns a jackal dark mage, it will definitely be investigated by the Sorcerer’s Sanctuary.
The person in charge of this is almost certainly Morgans.
What a mess, this time it was supposed to be just delivering a package, how did things suddenly turn out like this? It was supposed to be something to be happy about when one had managed to defeat so many jackals, yet one had to worry about it again.
Only, if it wasn’t for all this darkness, would he have had a chance to survive?
“Will you tell the king my name, Colonel Todman?” Jace asked.
“Definitely, even though you’re not one of ours and we won’t take credit for it.” Colonel Todman said with a smile.
“I was wondering if I could stop talking about me.”
The crowd turned their heads, and Colonel Todman asked in disbelief, “Why, you’ll be commended by the King, not to mention getting a chance to see the King in person, and if you’re lucky maybe you’ll be given a couple of gold coins or something, I don’t quite get it, it’s what you deserve.”
At this point, the few gold coins that might come his way had little appeal to Jace.
“Frankly, I brought the scrolls and stuff out privately without permission because I heard it was dangerous on the road.” Jace said, “If the king finds out about the flare and tells my boss about it, and he knows I don’t know any magic just an errand boy, I’m sure I’ll be punished.”
“So.” Colonel Todman stroked his frizzy hair, “It does seem a bit difficult.”
“It could be tinkered with a little.” A soldier next to Todman said, “Let’s say he got hold of a Dwarven flare gun left behind by one of the sentries in the battle and proceeded to fire it to get our attention or something, and the result will be the same anyway.”
“Makes sense, I’ll leave it to you to write the report then John.” Toddman finished, patted Jace on the shoulder and said, “Now you have nothing to be afraid of, little brother Jace, our company will set you up.”
