Chapter 67: Sudden attack
by Jessie@AFNCCWhat’s going on?
He wanted to look down the walls, but it was undoubtedly too dangerous to do so.
An apprentice had been yanked away so unannounced, so how could an assistant like him be spared?
Who attacked him, the orc?
The chances were low, currently the Black Stone Orcs were fighting the Black Iron Dwarves in the northern part of the Red Ridge Mountains in a big mess, if they entered the canyon of the Red Ridge Mountains through the Burning Plains and came this way in hordes, they would surely be discovered by the militia patrols of the Lakeside Town first.
It is reasonable to say that now …… the entire Red Ridge Mountain will not have a legion that dares to raid a castle except for wandering orcs like that shaman.
That means there’s only one possibility left, jackals, and it can’t be fishmen after all, can it?
The local jackals are the Darkskin tribe, and the darkest and most violent tribe within the entire Stormwind City Kingdom, if it is them …… should they immediately enter the fortress to hide, or hold this sentry tower?
Together with this sentry tower, the entire castle had a total of four sentry towers of different sizes, and at this moment, there were still bright lights of torches held by sentries on the other sentry towers, only this center sentry tower at the top of the fortress was at the moment without a sentry on duty.
Not more than a few seconds later, before he could decide on his strategy, a strange sneer suddenly came from behind him. Jace turned his head as a tuft of dark brown stray hairs rose up the wall and a dog’s head emerged, his swollen, dark yellow eyeballs staring straight this way.
When this jackal spotted Jace’s presence, he shouted, “Ha…… someone’s meat!”
There’s no choice. The tower must be defended!
Jace gripped his baguette and rushed over and smashed it over his head, the jackal falling off the wall with a haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Just as he was in the stall of relief, an iron hook suddenly flew up with a choking sound nearly hooking his neck, Jace retreated back a few steps, his ribs were scraped by the iron hook, rubbing out a trail of blood, the grappling hook was hooking tightly onto the wall, the rope began to vibrate non-stop.
These jackals actually climb walls with iron hooks?
These iron hooks were very large and spiked, and the ropes were not twine, but chains!
This must be the orc’s siege props, the supplies fell here after the tribe’s defeat and were picked up or snatched by the jackals and used to attack the human walls!
Jace drew a rusty longsword from a nearby weapon rack and attempted to pry the iron hook loose, however, he hadn’t expected the hook and claw to be so tightly hooked, especially since the jackals below had begun to climb, their weight crashing the hook and claw even more solidly.
It was so hard that he was almost able to defend it, when an iron blade reached up from below without warning and slammed into his sword, he felt his hands go numb from the shock, and just as he wanted to continue prying, the jackal with the blade jumped up along the chain and delivered a horizontal slash!
Jace ducked low in a lurch and took a few steps back, the jackal in front of him wasn’t as tall as he was, but was covered in much darker fur than the ones in the Aelwyn Forest, covered in benjamins, with arms and legs that seemed like skin and bones, and looked even more demented and treacherous.
It clearly didn’t take Jace seriously, charging straight at him in excitement, and Jace sidestepped a frontal slash from him, stabbing his sword into the thick mane of his opponent’s neck.
The jackal’s excited roar instantly pooh-poohed, and while whimpering and trembling, he fell to the ground and rolled over a few times no longer able to stand up.
Jace realized it was a sneak attack by the jackals, yet the main force in the castle had already rushed out the gates to hunt the supposed jackal dark mage, a diversion?
He picked up a torch and kept waving it in the direction of the watchtower on the other side while shouting, “Jackal raid! There’s a jackal raid!”
After shouting for a while, he noticed that the shadows on the top of the tower on the other side, illuminated by the torches, were already all bowed down with the strange shadows of jackals …… The sentries there had been taken out as well!
The stone fortress had become increasingly chaotic, with clanging knocks, cries, growls, and jackal screams, and it was now too late and pointless to warn the entire interior of the fortress.
Those cavalrymen in the forest must be alerted immediately to return to defense before they can do so.
The stone fortress was in disarray, and even if it was still quiet, shouting at the top of your lungs right here towards the forest wouldn’t do much good. Wasn’t there some kind of horn, bell, or something that could convey an alert?
It occurred to him at that moment that there had indeed been heralds with trumpets when he first entered the castle, but where were those men now?
There were no horns on this little tower atop the fortress castle, and there were no campfires or anything like that to create a visible signal. There was only a torch, so how about tossing it up into the sky?
Just as he was scrambling, a jackal jumped up on the wall again, waving the axe in his hand and chortling like a fool.
Can t …… continue to stay here will only be killed by more and more jackals.
Jace was not even a two-fisted fighter right now, and the ones coming up now were all jackal pawns, so if a stronger warrior did come up, he could be at a big disadvantage on his own.
One must return to that house of theirs to find the warlock bag and release the brat.
Wait a minute …… brats?
Yeah, the Kid knows fireballs, so we can have him shoot them into the sky to create flares!
The jackal swung his axe across violently, he was not very strong and the axe seemed to be a huge axe used by orcs, very bulky.
Jace easily dodged as the jackal slammed his axe into the stone wall, before he could stand Jace stabbed his sword straight through the jackal’s dog-thin waist from behind, and with a raspy whimper the jackal fell off the stone wall, landing with a plopping thud and smashing solidly against the city wall below.
That spot was already crowded with several jackals where Martin the Apprentice had been standing.
The jackals were frantically banging on the nail-encrusted wooden door, and it was they who had made that annoying dangling noise earlier, but it was because of that noise that the jackals hadn’t even realized that Jace was fighting their companions in the tower above them.
That jackal that fell so badly didn’t even get their attention.
“Saeuno!”
He shouted somewhat messily, but did not expect the little kid to hear him at all. Because if his voice was too loud, he would inevitably attract all those jackals below, then wouldn’t he be unable to eat?
One by one, we’ll deal with the ones who climb up and live a little longer.
The sound of a jackal clawing at a stone wall came from behind him as his mind was racing.
This jackal jumped up with two short axes in his hands, and just as he stood still he howled and danced back and forth like an acrobat.
Jace’s mind had been filled with the “keep your distance, point your sword forward” techniques that Grid had taught him.
