    Chapter Index

Sitting in the alchemy room making tea and watching the boiling teapot, Jace’s mind was filled with the magic that had just gotten out of control.

His hands were still shaking slightly from the over-excitement he had just experienced.

What he didn’t understand was why he had ignited the Shadowfire when he was clearly chanting an arcane spell.

How could the Shadow act at the behest of a spell that manipulates arcane magic?

Unless these shadowy forces, instead of being guided by a spell at all, acted spontaneously of their own volition.

It reminded him of that night on the stone fortress, the Shadow Fire that had suddenly become hotter and hotter and had eventually burned the entire sword.

If this is true, it’s not a spell but an “ability” according to the game.

The priest of the Cathedral of Light also mentioned that negative emotions can trigger and induce the forces of darkness.

But is it a negative emotion when one is just trying to successfully cast an arcane spell?

However, mania, excitement, excitement to the extreme, and extreme emotions were also the sustenance of Shadow expansion. Presumably these Shadow powers, fused with the flames guided by the little bit of arcane energy that had been so hard to summon produced a crimson burst that ended up as some sort of undercooked version of Shadow Blaze.

It seemed that every time he was able to use the Shadow to explode with amazing power that he could not have predicted, it came with the most extreme emotions …… whether it was against the Black Dragon or fighting for his life against the Talon Blood Demon.

Even with the fear spells used to defy Gagin’s fear spells that night.

Does it have something to do with the black dragon’s vigor he draws from? Or was he “born” this way, as Galdus said? Or is it both.

Because after calming down, he knew that the scorch spell he’d put in wasn’t really a success at all, even though with his ability to manipulate arcane magic, it was already an improvement to cause fire the first time around.

What really brought about the damage could be said to be 80% dependent on the sudden surge of Shadow Power later on.

So is it true that later on, after you learn the Scorch spell, you can use it to light a fire and then channel Shadow to add a handful of firewood that can be stronger than the spell itself?

It’s pretty practical if you just think about it.

    Just can it be reproduced?

Now all this Shadow energy that had appeared because of his sudden outburst of emotion was not triggered out of his own accord.

Is there a way to stabilize active triggers? Deliberately letting your emotions get out of control?

    No ……

Thinking about it, Jace stared at the fire at the bottom of the pot and subconsciously stretched out the fingers of his right hand.

Consciousness slowly moves to the dancing firelight ……

Wait …… He clenched his fingers together at once.

    砬砬,砬砬,水壶盖的动静将他的胡思乱想拉回了现实,他挤了一下眼睛,第一时间甚至都不敢去触碰这些器皿,生怕里面又会掺进不详的能量。

Jess poured out the boiling water, put the kettle back in its place with a half-hearted wash, and reboiled the water in a different kettle.

After brewing the tea, he sniffed it carefully to make sure nothing smelled different before carrying the pot out the door.

As Marin drank his tea, he stood by and scrutinized his skin, eyes, etc., and was relieved when nothing appeared out of the ordinary.

It’s just too dangerous to go off the deep end just now.

After taking care of the old mage and getting permission to leave the study, he looked out at the high sky and felt as if he had gone through a ghostly door.

By this time, Grid was waiting for him over in the garden.

When the two arrived at the Blue Hermitage, Jace found a nook or cranny to sit in, and Grid looked around to see no one else, and asked anxiously, “What did the elfess say?”

    “I didn’t see her.”

    “Ah, she went south?”

Grid scratched his head, “What a pain in the ass, Jace, you didn’t have any nightmares last night, did you?”

Jess said, “That’s not true, but I’m going to wait for her to come back …… It’s going to give me a headache just thinking about having to spend time with those things in the meantime.”

Grid said, “Honestly, I think there must be some kind of demonic energy in that place with all the corpses, I had a pretty horrible nightmare last night, damn it. I couldn’t get that stuff out of my head after I got out yesterday, I had no appetite for anything, I woke up this morning and got a little better, so I thought I’d find you a drink to take the edge off, I’ll have to have something stronger.”

“No nightmares, but I’m not much better, always thinking about that tent, those bodies.” Jace said.

“Right? It’s downright evil. Do you still want a light beer?”

“I want the same as you.”

Grid greeted the wine waiter and came over to order two large glasses of mead, sighed deeply, and said, “I hope this is all over soon.”

Jace looked at him and said, “I’m going on a trip east in a couple days.”

    “East Valley?”

    “Probably the town of Lakeside.”

    “Can I help you?”

“I’m just going to help my boss look at something, I’ll be back in two days, just to remind you, don’t come over and have something you can’t find me for.”

“Then take care of yourself on the road.”

“Heh, I’m more relaxed without you.”

Grid glanced at him, drew a couple circles on the table with his finger cap, and said, “I still don’t get it… how the hell did that Death Knight die there?”

Jace said, “As I see it it was just the carapace that happened to be found by those jackals.”

Grid asked, “So why did he do it? I mean, did he change shells, or did he abandon his own? Like Talon Bloodmage?”

Jace said, “How should I know, it sounds more reliable than jackals killing a death knight anyway.”

The dwarf mulled it over for a moment and asked, “Is this Death Knight the Blood Demon’s lieutenant or not?”

“Hopefully.” Jace said, “Otherwise it means there might be more Death Knights in the kingdom and Elwyn is getting darker and darker. By the way, I injured my teacher this morning while I was learning magic, so ……”

“What did you hit him for?” Grider asked, “Is he charging too much for tuition?”

“No, I accidentally ……” said Jace, “I just learned a flame magic …… he said to put it towards him, he used a boundary magic and said What must be fine, so I let it go, but he didn’t defend against it, probably got a sneak attack from the shadow energy I accidentally let out …… I was pretty excited at that point, I’ll have to see what happened.”

At that moment, the wine waiter placed two glasses of wine on the table, and the dwarf stared at her as she left before glancing up and saying, “Shadow? Then how come no one has come for you?”

“I said I was injured by a black dragon, so I have the power of the Shadow inside me, and someone can testify for me.” Jace muffled a sip of wine and said, “As long as Winressa is willing to write a certificate for me, that magic defense thingy in Dalaran doesn’t commit a psychotic act and intentionally screw me over, and teacher Carlo Duchamp doesn’t suddenly lose his memory, I should be able to get through this safely.”

“I can testify for you as well, Jace.” Grid patted himself on the chest and said, “Are the former Griffin Knight’s assurances convincing?”

Jace looked at him and said, “That means a lot to me, Grid, thank you.”

“For you? That’s just not convincing to anyone else la!” Grid took a sip as well and said, “How dare you look down on me …… When I become King of the Hills, the Legend of Kazmodan, don’t say anything about a letter of guarantee. At that time to write a letter to your little king, let him in the west of the open land to seal you a piece of farm, so that you become a small lord lord, the money to buy a house are saved.”

“I waited for this day to come.” Jace said as he raised his glass.

“You’ll have to wait, then.” The dwarf hemmed and hawed. The two men clinked glasses and each took a large sip.

Grid wipes the liquor from his beard and asks, “By the way, does this mean you can be open about your magic?”

“Are you kidding me ……,” Jace said as he lowered his voice, “It’s one thing to have Shadow energy in your body that you can’t control, it’s another to learn so many messed up and weird tricks! You’d better be careful, don’t go around talking about it.”

“I know, I know, I’m sure I won’t say anything, after all, I’m a fucking accomplice too.” Grid said while drinking, “But at least it’s a good start, maybe you’ll do right by warlocks in the Lordaeron Alliance in the future, after all, there’s a kind warlock like you …… Kind warlocks, how do I feel than orc scholars sound even more away from the rumor.”

“Or the ogre thief is more outrageous.” Jace chimed in.

“Not that far off.” Grid said, “When exactly is Winressa coming back, has she mentioned it to you?”

“No.” Jace said, “I dropped her off at my room that day and left without saying anything, she was in a hurry to get some sleep and I was too embarrassed to interrupt. But she said she had to go to Night Town to investigate, think about the time it took us to go back and forth to Raven Ridge that day, it would be faster to go to Night Town from the side of the Red Ridge Mountain, but it’s not possible to go back and forth in a few days, not to mention that she also had to go investigate about the Death Knights, so I guess it would take at least a week or two, so I’ll go back to check it out again in the next few days.”

“So you’re not charging her half a month’s rent?” Grider asked.

“It’s not like it’s my house.” Jace said, “And wouldn’t it seem a little wrong in the head for me to pester her for a few silver coins when I’m still begging her to use the prestige of her two sisters to scare these mages?”

“That’s true.” Grid nodded and said, “Speaking of which, you’re really eating it up, you’ve caught an elf griping without end.”

“Or what?” Jace said, “Wouldn’t it be a waste to catch one like that and not gripe so hard that there’s nothing left to gripe about? Besides it’s not like a pledge would do her any harm, and I’m not a bad …… person in the first place.”

Speaking of which it suddenly occurred to him that the so-called guarantee was also a guarantee that the Shadow energy he was subjected to wouldn’t cause any other damage or create any other chaos, right?

If it comes out in the future that you’re a warlock, will it implicate the people who vouched for you?

Thinking about it that way made the whole thing a little less relaxing all of a sudden.

“Well, it’s actually still risky to vouch for me. This matter …… if she is not willing, I can not say anything.”

“What fucking risk?” Grid suddenly said anxiously, “You fought desperately for the South Sea Town, protected those soldiers at the Stone Castle, and, and …… you did so much for these kingdoms, and those bullshit mages still think there’s something wrong with you learning black magic? I just can’t figure it out, if someone can use holy light to kill people, why don’t you allow someone to be able to use dark shadow to save people? What kind of reasoning is that!”

Jace sighed as he looked at the Dwarf’s anxious face, “After all, they didn’t road me traveling together these past few months like you did, Grid, remember how you reacted at the very beginning when you found out I could do black magic?”

Gridd was stunned for a moment and nodded slowly again.

“Only slowly.” Jace said, “I don’t think it’s going to be any easier at all to change their opinion than it was for you to become King of the Hill, is it?”

“Changing the opinion of a group of people, hey, that doesn’t sound like something a mortal could do.” Grid let out a bitter laugh and raised his glass.

“I’ll still help you though, Cecil boy, once you’ve dried these in your hands.”
