Life of a Magic Academy Mage – 47

Chapter 47
Uregor suddenly remembered a story he had heard from Professor Garcia.
“Student Yi-Han has a lot of mana” Garcia had said.
“Is it to such an extent?” Uregor inquired curiously.
“Try making a big circle with your arms” Garcia suggested.
“Wow. That is a considerable level” Uregor acknowledged.
“That much?” he asked but there was no answer.
He had heard that Yi-Han had a crazy amount of mana but he didn’t expect it to be this much.
If he couldn’t feel the recovery even after drinking a magic potion there was no need to say more.
“Sorry Professor” Yi-Han apologized.
“…No it’s okay. Anyway you did well. I’ll commend you. Look! Here’s a student who has perfectly made a potion” the professor announced.
“Wardanaz…!” someone exclaimed.
“Is it indeed the Wardanaz family?” another wondered aloud.
The other students were more in awe of Yi-Han being a Wardanaz than surprised by his skill muttering things like “It’s definitely a Wardanaz” or “Not surprising for such a genius.”
Yi-Han was slightly taken aback by this murmuring.
‘What’s this? Why the fuss?’ he thought critically assessing himself.
Yi-Han didn’t consider himself a genius. He was just more accustomed to student life than others due to his long time spent in the laboratory.
However being treated like a genius was somewhat disconcerting.
‘When did this happen?’ he pondered.
“Indeed Wardanaz. It’s genius.”
Asan who was transferring a slightly blurry blue potion to a flask admired it.
Asan’s potion was quite good but it was true that its completeness looked disappointing compared to Yi-Han’s.
“Look at the potion made by Siana of the Immortal Phoenix it’s exceptional but not as good as yours. Look there.”
“!”
Yi-Han turned to see a snake mixed-blood student in priestly robes holding a distinctly clear blue potion.
‘The Flameng Order?’ Yi-Han recognized instantly recalling Yonaire’s explanation.

The Order devoted to alchemy naturally produced excellent alchemists. Thus it was no surprise that a student like Siana could create such an outstanding potion.
Siana approached Yi-Han and Asan extending her hand.
“You’re from the Wardanaz family right? Pleased to meet you. I’m Siana.”
“Nice to meet you. Feel free to speak casually. I’m Yi-Han”
Yi-Han shook hands with her. It was cold and chilly probably because she was a snake mixed-blood.
“I didn’t expect to meet such an exceptional alchemist. Did you learn from the Wardanaz family?”
“Alright enough chatting” Professor Uregor interrupted having returned to the front of the classroom.
“Today everyone tried making a <Lesser Mana Recovery Potion>. Some of you did well on your first try while others struggled. But don’t be too elated or disheartened by these results. This is just the beginning of alchemy. A complex and mysterious world of alchemy awaits you” he continued.
‘Professors indeed have a knack for dampening students’ enthusiasm’ Yi-Han thought.
“Your assignment for next week is to make a <Lesser Spirit Affinity Potion>. You’ll test it yourself so it would be wise to pay attention” Uregor instructed.
The students busily took notes.
Fortunately Professor Uregor provided the recipe for the <Lesser Spirit Affinity Potion> sparing the freshmen from having to research it themselves.
“Professor we can’t find any evolving spirit herb. Is it upstairs?” a student asked having failed to find the ingredient on the shelves and drawers.
Uregor equally puzzled responded “What are you talking about? You need to find it yourself.”
“Ah I see. We’ll look for it” the students replied understanding their task.
Upon hearing Professor Uregor’s words the students stood up ready to search the area.
“No not here” Uregor corrected them.
“??”
“There” he pointed outside the window.
The dense mountain range behind the main building greeted the students.
“…”
“…”
“You must go and find it. I trust you all remember what I said in the first lecture” he said firmly.
The students’ faces twisted in despair and anger.
—
It wasn’t just Professor Uregor who was revealing his true colors.
The professors at the magic academy seemed to be competing to assign the most homework. Each class was accompanied by an insane amount of assignments.
“Take these books and find at least five logical fallacies in them.”
“Professor we don’t have enough books. We need more for everyone to share.”
“What are you talking about? That’s for one person. Lift all the books and new ones will appear underneath.”
“…”
The students were horrified by the sheer volume of books easily more than a dozen.
“Professor it’s too much to carry…”
“Don’t worry. I’ve cast a weight reduction spell on them. Now quickly take the books.”
This instruction came during the <Basic Imperial Language and Logic> class which left several students from the White Tiger close to tears.
“In my youth I submitted this magic circle design to the empire. Estimate its total cost. You don’t need to be exact but the students with the furthest answers will be punished.”
Another professor announced in the <Basic Imperial Geometry and Arithmetic> class driving even Asan who hailed from a noble family that worked closely with the Emperor to despair.

“Love and harmonize with each other. What? You don’t want to? Your wishes don’t matter. You must love and harmonize. Therefore your assignment is to bring the flag hanging in the freshman lounge of the tower I designate by next class. It must be the flag with the emblem.”
This was from the <Basic Magic Character Education> class making students wonder if it was about moral education or inciting conflict.
With each class ending the students’ faces grew more haggard.
“How do we even get the White Tiger’s flag?”
“Why does it have to be the White Tiger? Those guys are impossible to persuade.”
The target for the students of the Blue Dragon unfortunately was the White Tiger.
If it had been the Black Tortoise or the Immortal Phoenix they might have been able to negotiate or discuss borrowing the flag.
But considering their bad blood with the White Tiger asking to borrow it would likely be met with scorn.
“The White Tiger guys also have our flag as a target. Should we try to exchange?”
“How can we trust them? Have you seen the dirty tricks they pull? They’re barbarians with no sense of honor.”
“I asked earlier and they flatly refused.”
“Let’s just give up. It’s a waste of time.”
The Blue Dragon students murmured in despair.
Assignments should be manageable to motivate students but when they seem impossible it’s easier to just give up.
“Why did it have to be the White Tiger!”
‘This is bad’ Yi-Han thought alarmed by his friends’ mood.
Giving up on even a single credit in a class was not the way to success especially in this magic academy which was like a chaotic battlefield of insane lectures and unpredictable credits.
They couldn’t afford to give up so soon.
It was one thing if it was just their own scores but Yi-Han was also concerned about being dragged down with them.
“Wait! Don’t give up everyone” he urged.
“!”
“Wardanaz!”
“Do you have a plan?”
“Of course. I knew you would have a plan.”
It took about 3 seconds for the students’ reactions to change from surprise->curiosity->confidence->belief.
Yi-Han was incredulous at his easily swayed peers.
“What’s your plan Wardanaz?” they eagerly asked.
“Hold on. I think I know” Asan confidently interjected with a self-assured smile.
“What is it Dargard?”
“He’s thinking of sneaking into the White Tiger without anyone knowing. There’s a 95% chance it’s that.”
“Wow!”
“Indeed! I’ll join you!”
“Me too! Let’s give those White Tiger guys a taste of their own medicine!”
“What’s happening?”
“Wardanaz is planning to infiltrate the White Tiger to steal their flag instead of groveling to them.”
“I like that idea!”
In an instant the Blue Dragon students hatched a plan. And then they called for Yi-Han.
“Wardanaz! Lead us.”
“You’re the only one who can lead us having planned this from start to finish!”
Yi-Han started to object but then resigned himself to silence. He was already sufficiently annoyed.
‘Well we do need to get into the White Tiger.’
Even if Yi-Han had been a White Tiger student it seemed unlikely that they would give up the flag. He remembered the group punishment they had undergone because of him…
There was no other way but to use force.
“Alright.”
“Wardanaz! Wardanaz!”
“White Tiger Tower guys wait for us! We’re coming!”
‘Is this really helpful for character education?’
Yi-Han doubted whether the principal’s lectures were genuinely fostering proper character. Wasn’t it just deepening the rift between students?
—
Finally evening arrived.
Yi-Han called Tijiling and just like before cunningly tricked her into eating dinner.
While sipping soup Tijiling sensed Yi-Han’s triumphant gaze and wondered.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Heh. It’s nothing.”
Tijiling pondered if the boy was actually delighting in the fact that he had used his cunning words to get her to eat dinner.
‘It must be my imagination.’
He was after all from the honorable Wardanaz family. Coming to feed her dinner was likely a matter of pride fulfilling a priest’s request and living up to the expectations of his noble background. It seemed unlikely for someone of his stature to take pleasure in such a petty deed like a villain.
“There you are Wardanaz. I was looking for you.”
Yi-Han was startled by the sudden greeting from Siana of the Flameng Order whom he had met in the alchemy class.
Siana was not alone; other tower students were with her.
“What’s going on?”
“As you know from our alchemy class we all need to make a <Lesser Spirit Affinity Potion>. Working alone has its limits. What if we all gathered materials together?”
“That’s a good idea.”
Yi-Han was pleased.
He had thought of a similar approach of collaborating with students from other towers but they were intimidated by him.
‘Damn. Is it because of the priest’s robes? I have robes too.’
“Could you gather the Blue Dragon students? Let’s collect the materials together.”
“Yes. Let’s do that.”
After concluding their discussion Yi-Han saw Siana off. The students with her whispered as they departed “We’re safe” “Did you see his eyes? I thought my heart would stop” “But he’s kinder than I expected.”
Yi-Han felt unjustly accused even though he knew better.
Returning to his seat Tijiling looked puzzled.
“What’s the matter?”
“It’s about Priestess Siana from the Flameng Order.”
“Yes we’re both attending the alchemy class together” Yi-Han confirmed.
“…It’s nothing” Tijiling replied then suddenly closed her mouth halting her words.
There were two ways to frustrate someone and one of them was to start speaking and then stop…
‘It’s textbook suspense’ Yi-Han thought.
Of course Yi-Han was well aware of how meticulous priests could be. Probably Tijiling didn’t continue speaking because discussing someone in their absence might come off as needless slander.
But Yi-Han didn’t care about such niceties.
‘What does it matter? I’m curious.’
Instead of a direct approach Yi-Han decided to persuade Tijiling indirectly.
He took out a cross used for prayers in the Presinga Order and placed it on a rock in front of them.
Tijiling puzzled tilted her head in confusion.
“Speaking ill of someone not present is wrong but sharing one’s thoughts in private prayer is permissible” Yi-Han suggested.
“Are you by any chance planning to pretend to pray just to speak freely?”
“I seem to hear something but not really. I’m in the middle of a prayer.”
Tijiling sighed and rose from her seat.
Then she knelt beside Yi-Han bowing her head as if in prayer over the cross.
“Lord Presinga this is not to slander or accuse anyone.”
“Thank you.”
“I seem to hear something but not really. I’m in the middle of a prayer.”
“…”
Tijiling too had her own subtle way of making a point.
