    Episode 501

    Rattling- rattling-

Simon came to Tarados and was taking a carriage trip without any purpose.

The sound of the carriage wheels rolling becomes familiar to my ears. When you get used to everything from the uncomfortable rattling to the precariously shaking glass of water you feel better. It’s perfect if you have a book to read lightly.

“Simon. It is at 6 o’clock.”

    “yes.”

Of course the trip wasn’t all peaceful.

A chimera that looked like a mixture of all kinds of animals was chasing the carriage. This land of Tarados is a paradise for abandoned test subjects and chimeras.

Simon took a quick look at the chimera then turned his attention back to the book.

    Pow! puck! puck!

Black arrows pour down on the Chimera like rain. The chimera which was trembling with countless arrow feathers attached to its body eventually crashed onto the sandy ground! It fell down with a sound.

    -Tap!

    -Ta-dad!

Skeleton archers cheered on the carriage.

“Y After all they are necromancers!”

The driver who was driving the horse in front spoke with admiration.

“I never dreamed that I would cross Tarados so comfortably!”

“Yes don’t worry about the chimera and just focus on driving the carriage.”

Skeleton archers are waiting on top of the carriage and from a little further away Peer and Erzsebet are following the carriage and arranging the chimeras in advance.

It was quite a pleasant trip. The client’s younger sister Lisa who had decided to go with him was fast asleep and Kazan was writing down the information he had obtained so far in his notebook.

A brief moment of peace before the big battle.

Simon leaned back on the cushion inside the carriage and turned the next page of the book.

‘You read it well. ‘We’ve already come this far.’

My father Richard taught me that if you come to an unfamiliar place whether on a mission or deployment you must know the culture and history of the area to find a solution.

On the way Simon asked the coachman to tell him the story of Tarados but the coachman said it would be a ‘blow’ to see this and took out a book from the luggage compartment.

This book is a memoir of a ‘former lord’ during the golden age of Tarados.

The childhood story ends and is the highlight of the book.

This is when the gold mine dungeon appears.

    ‘It’s fascinating.’

It is said that the gold mine dungeon that appears in Tarados actually drops ‘gold’ when you kill a monster.

This slightly reddish gold radiated a more brilliant brilliance than any other gem on the continent and its shine did not fade even when taken out of the dungeon.

Adventurers sold the gold on the market and jewelry made from it became wildly popular among high-ranking nobles ushering in a great golden age for Tarados.

“I still remember those days clearly. With the rumor that there was a dungeon that dropped gold tens of thousands of adventurers flocked to Tarados with the dream of making a fortune.”

“A village was formed around the dungeon and the people were busy. I thought this was my chance. Money was spent to grow and promote the village. The village grew into the wealthiest city in the kingdom within a few years.”

“But I didn’t know at the time. “I wonder what kind of despair and pain that dungeon will bring to us in the future.”

    “Uhm.”

Lisa who was lying down tossed and turned because the carriage was too cramped. As Simon gently stroked her hair she soon fell asleep resting on his thighs.

Simon returned his gaze to the book.

“Monsters in the dungeon are born on the walls of the dungeon and have strange regenerative powers. It easily recovers from being pierced by a spear but it can be destroyed by expelling the gold embedded in its chest from its body. If you pick it up and hand it to the merchants who are anxiously beckoning outside the dungeon you will receive a heavy wad of money.”

“People blinded by gold have come to dominate the first floor of the dungeon where monsters do not appear. In this dungeon people’s wounds healed quickly like monsters. I wasn’t hungry and didn’t have a hangover even after drinking. “It’s as if time is fixed.”

“People ate slept and drank all day long on the first floor of the dungeon. Since there was no harm to the body even drugs became popular. They did anything for pleasure and inside this place was a wild forest created by human ugliness. We called people who lived in dungeons like that ‘dungeon addicts.’”

“Dungeon addicts never tried to leave the dungeon. After eating and drinking all day when I ran out of money I went down to the second basement floor killed dungeon monsters and handed the gold to the merchants to receive money. “With that money I bought alcohol women and drugs.”

“When humans lose the value of their labor tragedy is bound to occur.”

Kazan sitting next to me blurted out.

“……Ahaha since when have you been watching?”

“I was following along from the first chapter.”

Kazan scratched the scar over his eye.

“Knowing the history and culture of the region is as important as the battle.”

“You sound similar to my father.”

Simon smiled and looked at the book again.

Something is going wrong. It started with the words:

“Something is going wrong. The number of ‘dungeon addicts’ increased and conversely the frequency with which dungeon monsters appeared decreased. The ‘dungeon addicts’ fought each other to get the gold. Even if blood splatters and the head splits it returns to its original state after a while. ‘Dungeon addicts’ now kill people as a way to pass the time.”

“Since no gold was produced the merchants turned their backs on them. Dungeon addicts who were unable to make money were unable to obtain alcohol women or drugs. In the end he burst out of the dungeon and stole money and food from good city residents and even took their lives. Just like the habit of casually killing people in the dungeon.”

“I sent guards to try to control them. However the dungeon addicts who came out did not die no matter how much they were cut. The wounds regenerated and were resurrected endlessly. That’s right. Before we knew it they had become the ‘monsters’ of the dungeon.”

    Simon was dumbfounded.

“……Could this really happen a person turning into a monster?”

    “Yes that’s right.”

The coachman who was driving the carriage looked back and answered.

“When I was about 5 or 6 years old my father was a ‘dungeon addict.’ My mother always sighed deeply because my father never came home.”

    “ah…….”

    “A problem will soon arise.”

Kazan also spoke as if urging.

“Go on to the next page Simon.”

    “Ah yep.”

“The city was burned and destroyed. The great lords were worried that those immortal dungeon addicts would enter their territory. The kingdom sent an edict telling them to resolve this situation by any means possible. They said that if they fail they will have no choice but to close Tarados.”

“I hired skilled adventurers. These are the five most famous adventurers on the continent who have never failed to conquer a dungeon. Now this is the only number left to me. They will go into the deepest part of the gold mine dungeon kill the dungeon owner and completely destroy the dungeon.”

I can feel Youngju’s mental state shaking as he writes. Simon nervously turned the next page.

“I did it! Adventurers. No our heroes killed the dungeon owner! The dungeon began to disappear and the addicts inside and outside the dungeon finally came to their senses! “Great adventurers saved Tarados!”

A strong sense of joy is felt in Youngju’s diary.

    but.

It only took one page for the lord’s feelings to change.

“All of this feels like a nightmare. I heard horror stories. The ‘dungeon addicts’ who came to their senses were angry at the heroes who saved them and asked why they destroyed our paradise. They brutally hacked the wounded heroes to death with swords and desecrated their bodies. There is a rumor that one of them survived but I am not sure.”

“I have decided to resign from my position as permanent resident. I felt deep frustration and pessimism at the ugliness of humanity. Is this really a human being? Then I can no longer lead them. A new lord will be dispatched from Langerstine. Good luck to him.”

    This was the last memoir.

    “…….”

Simon closed his eyes and closed the book. I felt confused as well as surprised that this continent had such a history.

    “Mr. coachman.”

    “yes.”

    “What happened after this?”

    The coachman laughed bitterly.

“What could addicts who lived in the dungeon enjoying pleasure without any effort do after the dungeon disappeared? One by one they starved to death.”

    “…….”

“With the revitalization of the gold mine dungeon the economy of Tarados which maintained prices three to four times higher than other regions was also shattered. In particular when the dungeon was destroyed all the ores used as luxury goods for nobles faded and turned into ugly stones and Tarados had to pay the full price. Capital and people were flowing out like an ebb and gangs were coming in and stealing anything of value.”

    Simon nodded.

If Tarados’ infrastructure had been dependent on dungeon revenue it would have been impossible to suddenly change the system and adapt people to it.

That’s how it would have become the poor territory it is today and the new lord who came to Tarados by order of the kingdom would have oppressed and exploited the residents.

Then the ‘Society’ a group that conducts physical experiments came in and the Ganeth Guild which received their support settled in Tarados and everything would have changed out of control.

“Now that more than 40 years have passed the Schönne still harbor some resentment toward the older generation.”

    said the coachman.

“Because such a situation occurred around the time I was about to grow up and my generation had to pay for the mistakes of adults and dungeon addicts. In the end after my mother passed away I ran away to Ebrun and worked.”

    “……okay.”

    Kazan quickly turned his head.

“Sorry while talking but we have arrived.”

After passing through the wilderness where chimera monsters which were a result of a failed experiment were wandering around Simon and his group finally arrived at a ruined city.

The surrounding area was desolate with only the site of a house remaining.

    “no way.”

“Yes this is the place from the story.”

The coachman said in a serious voice.

“This is Sogo a city of pleasure that had a gold mining dungeon and enjoyed the greatest heyday in the history of Tarados.”

There was really nothing left of this city called Sogo.

A place where people cannot live. It was literally a ruin. Only the ruins of houses and pillars are visible.

“According to information the Ganeth Guild and the Lord Soldiers are moving all the captured residents to these ruins.”

    Kazan said.

“Is there a headquarters of the ‘Society’ around here? Why am I in such an awkward place…”

“Because it is a place that Tarados people avoid. It would be a good place to secretly conduct illegal physical experiments. If not-”

    Kazan’s eyes became sharp.

“There is a completely new reason why I had to choose this place.”

While talking like that the carriage was passing through the ruined city.

    ‘…….’

Wide-open white eyes hidden behind the pillar were staring at them.

    * * *

    “Let’s get off Lisa.”

    “huh!”

Finally we arrived at our destination. I got off the carriage at this place where there was once a gold mine dungeon in Sogo.

“I never thought I’d come here again.”

The coachman was looking around with regretful eyes.

    Simon opened his mouth.

“Did you never go into a dungeon as a child?”

“……Yes the adults prevented the children from going near the dungeon. It was a very promiscuous place and stabbings often occurred there. All I remember is that I went to look for my father who was an addict and got caught and kicked out.”

Simon knelt down on one knee and spread his palm out in the sand scanning the stones and remains of pillars scattered around him.

Kazan was also sniffing the air with his nose on the floor.

“It’s subtle but the reverberations of people coming and going remain. It doesn’t seem that long ago.”

“There are traces of sand being swept away on the pillar. It’s a mark left by someone passing by.”

Simon’s eyes became sharp as he said that.

“According to the information it seems to be true that the Garness Guild and the Territory Soldiers moved people here.”

Kazan’s expression who was smelling the surroundings became serious for an instant.

    “Simon.”

    “Yes Kazan.”

    “Be careful.”

    Shootaaaaa-

    Shootaaa-

The sandy bottom began to rise suddenly around the ruins. Simon shouted immediately turning pitch black.

“Mr. coachman! lisa! Get inside the carriage!”

    “Oh I understand!”

The coachman quickly returned to the carriage with Lisa and Simon also took his place as if protecting the carriage.

    Shootaaaaa-

Finally the sand rose up and undead soldiers their bodies as dry as dried fish began to approach with swords and shields in hand.

    “Kazan!”

    “i get it.”

The two people jumped at the same time. Simon rushed forward and kicked the head of the first soldier who approached him with his leg.

    puck!

The soldier’s head was lightly shaken. however.

    Slurp slurp-

Flesh was rising like mud from the destroyed area and the face was being restored.

It was the same no matter how many times I broke it.

    ‘Of course.’

    Simon’s expression became serious.

‘They are immortal soldiers who regenerate in this place.’
