    Chapter 385

A monster in the form of what the continent would call a turtle protected by a rocky shell.

Although it was a bit large Simon who had hunted all sorts of vicious monsters from the continent thought it wouldn’t be a difficult fight. However…

    “…Phew. Pant! Pant!”

It had already been thirty minutes since the battle began.

Simon was still struggling unable to take down even the single monster.

    [Rattle!]

    [Rattle!]

His skeletons surrounded the monster and swung their weapons but the blades bounced off uselessly as they struck the hard shell covering its entire body.

From the rear the skeleton archers fired arrows and beside it a skeleton mage cast Dark Blaze. However neither the arrows nor the magic had any effect on the monster.

    Its defenses were nearly impenetrable.

    ‘Open!’

While the skeletons distracted the monster Simon aimed for a joint with the Overlord’s tentacle blades.

The blades slashed across the monster’s legs but they didn’t leave a scratch. Not just the shell but its entire skin was made of the same rock-like material.

    ‘If that’s the case…!’

Simon took a few steps back completed a magic circle and aimed his finger at the monster. If physical attacks didn’t work then curses had to be the key.

    {Sickness}

    Ting!

However the mineral covering the monster’s entire body even deflected the curse.

“…What in the hell is this?”

He didn’t expect all of his attacks to be this ineffective.

At that moment the monster broke through the skeletons and charged straight at Simon.

Simon quickly concentrated jet-black into his legs and opened his subspace.

    “Counting on you Herseva!”

    [Kid!]

A staff flew out of the subspace and landed in Simon’s hand. At the same time he jumped powerfully into the air.

The jet-black recovery rate of a Life Vessel was slower than that of an ordinary core of a human. Bringing her out so soon was a shame but there was no other option.

Floating in the air Simon swung Herseva down with all his might towards the monster’s shell.

    “Herseva’s Touch!”

    Thunk!

However even Herseva’s power couldn’t turn the shell into gold.

    [Ouch! That hurts kid!]

    “Kugh!”

Failing the attack Simon rolled and fell onto the shell.

    ‘How is this possible?’

Physical attacks magic curses and even supernatural abilities didn’t work on it.

This was just a single monster not even the master of the dungeon.

Though he felt a bit discouraged that everything he had learned and worked so hard for wasn’t working Simon quickly regained his composure.

    ‘This is a dungeon.’

Before coming here Simon had read many books about dungeons in the Kizen library. Surprisingly there was one thing that all dungeon explorers agreed on and emphasized.

It wasn’t the power to protect oneself the ability to explore the dungeon or the intuition to make the right decisions.

It was what is commonly referred to as one’s ‘mental’.

A dungeon is a separate world.

Don’t assume that the rules of your world will naturally apply there.

No matter how large and strong a creature is on land it’s weaker than a handful of floundering anemones if it falls into the sea.

Let all common sense fall to the wayside. Only then can you truly think

Just as Simon felt like he was vaguely getting an idea the monster realized he was on its shell and started thrashing violently.

    “Woah!”

Simon flailed his arms to keep his balance. If he fell he’d be crushed under its heavy feet.

    [Ugh! Wuttreyou wanningtodo? Kid?!]

Herseva shouted as she clung to Simon’s clothes with the living staff’s mouth to avoid being flung off.

“Let’s retreat for now. I need time to think!”

He didn’t think it was necessary to stubbornly try to defeat the monster right now.

Simon recalled Herseva back into the subspace then shot his Cloud toward a distant tree.

As the emerald-colored rope wrapped around the tree Simon leaped up off the shell and soared through the air on the rope.

The monster still shook around its massive body thinking Simon was on top of its shell.

    * * *

Back on Roke Island in Kizen’s great hall.

    “This is a huge mess.”

The MC Conrad clicked his tongue.

They had just displayed low-quality footage from the observer they brought back from the dungeon on the screen and the scene was nothing but a total disaster.

The students were full of confidence. They had grown significantly since the start of the year and had great pride in their abilities.

But that pride and confidence were shattered within minutes of entering the dungeon.

The Kizen students who had boldly declared they would hunt the master of the dungeon were now full of despair unable to even hunt the small rabbit-like monsters.

The more confident and arrogant the students were the worse their struggles became.

“Die die!! Why won’t it die?!!”

One student was showing signs of jet-black depletion blood trickling down his nose after frantically pouring jet-black fire onto a monster.

    “Arrrgh!”

Another student who had overexerted themselves in a fight right from the start ended up having to flee. She had broken her arm in just a few hours. Parents let out concerned groans.

“Professor Hong Feng! What are your thoughts on this situation?’

“In the ‘Plains’ where I was born and raised there’s a saying that goes like this.”

Hong Feng continued in a calm voice

“When in Plains do as the natives do.”

    “…Excuse me?”

“Even when they come to the Plains many people from the continent try to disrupt the villages and defile nature by flaunting their status or wealth. This is what we say to those people.”

In the Plains there was no high or low status. Above all of humanity there was only the great and mighty nature. To it each individual was equal.

“It’s the same with the students who entered the dungeon.”

Hong Feng rested her chin on her hand and sighed softly.

“If you’re in a dungeon you need to follow the rules of the dungeon.”

It was the second day in the dungeon.

    Crunch. Crunch.

Simon was sitting on the ground chewing on a high-calorie chocolate bar.

‘I’ve been trying to save it though.’

He only had enough food for two days and it was already day two.

Now he might starve to death unless he managed to hunt and eat a monster. Having savored the calorie bar Simon now looked at the artifact he had placed on the ground.

It was called the ‘Fountain of Life’. It gathered moisture from the air and converted it into potable water if you left it anywhere while sleeping.

Kizen had provided one to each student but they had to return it after the exam. Losing it would cost the student 2000 gold not to mention their source of water.

‘At least I don’t have to worry about water.’

With a grateful heart Simon drank the water collected in the artifact. His thirst was instantly quenched and his condition improved.

He carefully transferred every remaining drop of water into his canteen and stood up.

    “Alright let’s try this again!”

Simon spoke to himself with determination as he approached the tree ahead.

He only got to confirm after a day passed that most of the flora and fauna in this world were covered in the same mysterious ‘mineral’.

Although there were slight differences in sturdiness and flexibility depending on the part it was all the same material. They were designed to be impervious to damage.

‘Moreover why do the plants in this dungeon look so frightening?’

There were faint traces resembling eyes noses and mouths. The uncanny resemblances to people in suffering had him on edge.

Simon shook off the distracting thoughts and placed his hand on the bark of the tree he had approached. He then carefully and gently let some jet-black flow into it.

    Clink…! Ting!

The dark blue energy leaked out and crackled. The mineral repelled and expelled any external energy.

Things would’ve been easy if there was any way for jet-black to penetrate it but it was blocked from the start.

‘It’s not a defense mechanism. The material itself repels any energy that’s external from the dungeon.’

Simon removed his hand from the tree and drew a magic circle on his palm.

    {Conjure Flame}

He held the small flame against the tree’s surface and waited then touched it with his hand.

The surface was hot at first but after a moment perhaps it even released the heat back out and it returned to its original state. There were no signs of burning or expansion.

    {Frost Bolt}

The same went for using cold. It seemed that temperature wouldn’t work either.

Simon also tried applying electricity and pouring a venom potion on it but it was all useless.

At this point it was practically an invincible mineral.

He wondered if bringing this out to the continent would cause a technological revolution.

Of course it was common knowledge that items from dungeons lost most of their effectiveness when taken outside.

    “…What should I do?”

As he was deep in thought a sudden crack made Simon frown.

His connection to a thought just got cut off. One of the skeletons he had set up as guards had been attacked.

    He quickly turned around.

    Stomp! Stomp! Stomp! Stomp!

The turtle-like monster Simon had first seen in the dungeon was charging at him.

Of course it wasn’t the same one he had fought before. This was the most common type of monster in the forest.

    “Hyah!”

Simon quickly stepped on jet-black and leaped up. The turtle monster charged past him and smashed its head into a tree.

    Crack!!

The tree covered in the same mineral that Simon couldn’t break at all shattered and fell with a single blow.

Back on the ground Simon broke into a cold sweat.

‘That charge didn’t seem particularly powerful though.’

Could it be that the creatures and plants within the dungeon could harm each other?

Just then the monster turned its head toward Simon and charged at him again kicking up a cloud of dust.

    ‘Huh?’

Simon’s eyes widened. He could see that the rock on the monster’s forehead was cracked.

    “…”

Pondering while looking at the scene he finally smirked.

“Don’t tell me is that the trick?”

    Swish!

Simon immediately dodged to the side and pulled out a fruit he had collected on the first day from his subspace.

He had kept it in case he figured out a way to break the mineral and eat it.

    “Take this!”

Simon reached his arms out. The bones of the skeletons waiting nearby quickly covered his right arm.

    {Bone Armor – Gauntlet Mode}

After temporarily enhancing the strength of his right arm with Bone Armor he threw the fruit with all his might.

    Bang!

When the rock-covered fruit struck the monster’s head its covering shattered into pieces. And at the same time a huge chunk of the rock protecting the monster’s head broke apart.

    Clitter-clatter.

As he watched the shattered fragments fall Simon confirmed his hypothesis.

“When in a dungeon do as the dungeon does.”

Simon walked over and picked up the tree the monster had smashed earlier.

    {Jet-Black Eruption}

    Whoooosh!

It had been a bit since he last used this form of combat dark magic. Jet-black surged throughout Simon’s body maximizing his physical abilities. He effortlessly lifted the large tree and charged toward the incoming monster.

    Jump!

With a powerful leap he landed on the monster’s shell.

    “Haaaaaaaaaaaah!”

Then with all his might he struck the shell with the tree.

    Crash!

The moment the tree and shell collided the minerals sparked and the rock coatings around both of them shattered.

    “This was it!”

The mineral was nearly immune to external forces but when it collided with itself some sort of interaction ripped both sides apart in proportion to their mass.

He figured it out when the monster smashed into a tree on its own. He was lucky.

Simon pointed his two joined fingers at the monster’s back where the mineral had shattered to reveal exposed flesh.

Then he rapidly fired the curses he had prepared.

    {Exhaust}

    {Exhaust}

Only the outside was protected by the mineral so the interior was vulnerable to dark magic.

As the stacks of Exhaust accumulated the stumbling turtle monster soon thudded to the ground.

    “I’m sorry.”

Soon six tentacle blades emerged from Simon’s subspace.

    “I’ll end you painlessly.”

The blades pierced the monster’s head at terrifying speed.

As the monster finally went fully limp Simon also let out a painful groan and dropped to one knee.

He was exhausted and out of breath from the aftereffects of Jet-Black Eruption but a big smile was spread across his lips.

“I’m starting to get the hang of this.”

He felt like he had just taken a big step forward in this dungeon.
