    Chapter 382

One week remained until the advancement exam.

    Simon was training rigorously.

Whenever his jet-black ran dry he visited the house of Farahann the Professor of Defense Against Holy Arts.

Plants and barriers positioned around the place absorbed divinity from the air preventing it from escaping. It was the perfect place for undisturbed divinity training.

    “Akalion! Awaken!”

At Simon’s command the small teddy-bear-like Akalion was wrapped in divinity and transformed into a burly bear. Simon activated a divine magic circle drawn on Akalion’s torso.

    “Run!”

Kicking up a cloud of dust Akalion bounded forward leaping into the air.

Before they landed Simon focused on the divine magic circle. The divinity flowing out of the circle quickly extended and wrapped around Akalion’s front paws.

    Smash!

With a powerful strike the huge rock they were moving toward was shattered.

    “Well done!”

Simon smiled brightly. Akalion roared too the noise rumbling across the land like thunder.

There was no way Simon could neglect his light magic either. As a self-proclaimed ‘divine beast aspirant’ he was training diligently.

    [Meow!]

    [Meow! Meow!]

The kittens watching mimicked the attack with their tiny paws throwing playful punches before toppling over.

    Seeing this Simon laughed loudly.

“Haha! Did you want to follow along?”

Simon scooped Whitey and Blackey into his arms.

Though their size hadn’t changed for months their horns had grown just enough to be visible through their fur. They were indeed divine beasts.

“I wonder when you guys will grow into proper divine beasts and help me?”

Simon infused the two kittens with divinity and gently tossed them into the air.

In the air the kittens seemed to distort as they were covered in a shining halo of light.

They returned to their original forms and flopped back down to the ground.

    [Meow! Meowwww!]

It was like they were saying “That was fun! Do it again please!”

The kittens bounced around begging Simon to use his divinity on them again.

He tossed them up with divinity again and they returned for more repeating the cycle.

“L-Let’s stop now. I’m getting tired.”

Drained of both jet-black and divinity Simon lay down in the grass exhausted. Whitey climbed onto his head and messed up his hair while Blackey scratched at his uniform under the shade of his legs.

Worn out from studying for finals Simon desperately needed a nap. He turned his head.

    “Come back Akalion.”

As he withdrew the divinity from Akalion the muscular bear deflated like a balloon reverting to a small teddy bear.

    [Growl!]

As soon as they saw the shrunken Akalion the kittens’ eyes sparkled and they dashed toward him.

“Sorry. Play with them for a bit.”

    [Growwwl!]

Akalion let out a mournful cry as he fled from the kittens.

    * * *

All the first-year Kizen students began special training for the advancement exam.

Now that finals were done all subjects had shortened classes. Professors boldly skipped over lectures and textbook material focusing on practical dungeon training.

    Meanwhile in Belya’s lab.

“Lazyass I didn’t expect you to come see me.”

The lab which had been a pigpen was now impeccably clean. The trash was neatly sorted and every speck of dust and stain had been wiped away.

In the middle of it Rick wearing a maid cleaning outfit wiped the sweat from his forehead and grinned.

    “My goodness.”

Belya chuckled as she walked over and plopped down in her now-cleaned seat.

Rick quickly followed after her offering an ornate porcelain bottle of liquor. He even opened it and poured her a glass.

    “What’s the meaning of this?”

    “Just try it first.”

    Said Rick confident.

Belya tilted her head before taking a sip from the glass.

    “!!”

Her eyes widened in surprise and she quickly emptied the glass. Without stopping she picked up the bottle and downed it in one breath.

    “Kyahaaa!”

She sounded like a middle-aged man at a pub as she smiled heartily.

“Lazyass where did you get this?”

    Rick smiled back.

“I heard the Marerat tribe from the Plains enjoy a special liquor made from fermented mare’s milk. Professor Hong Feng let me in on the secret!”

    “…You bastard.”

It was an extremely rare item on Roke Island far from the plains where they once lived.

She wiped her mouth and said

    “What do you want?”

Hearing that Rick immediately bowed and rubbed his hands together in mercantile subservience.

“Haha! I didn’t do it for a reward. I just have something I wanted to ask about!”

    “Say it!”

“My specialty is intelligence warfare you see. Stuff like exploiting an opponent’s weaknesses. But dungeons can have unknown monsters that don’t exist on the continent.”

    “That’s right!”

“What should I do in places without prior information?”

    “Pure strength.”

Belya her cheeks flushed with liquor smiled so wide that her jagged teeth parted slightly in what could only be described as bloodlust.

“In such times you can only rely on your own pure strength.”

“I’m a bit weak in that area.”

    Click!

Belya stood up draping a jacket over her shoulders and gestured for Rick to follow.

“Ah what are you doing? Hurry up and follow me!”

A smile spread across Rick’s face.

    “Yes Professor!”

    * * *

    “I’ll start now Cami!”

    “Ready Meilyn!”

As Meilyn swung her arms out wide a vast ice storm spread out filling the area in front of her.

It was like a lion opening its jaws wide as it approached.

    {Frost Nova}

    Crrrrrrrrrrrrrrush!

Empowered by the addition of another spell ice shards rained down on Camibarez from inside the storm.

    “Pant!”

Camibarez stepped back brought her left hand into the shape of a gun and rapidly fired Blood Bullets. Their power was reduced but the recoil was easier to control and less blood was consumed letting her accurately shoot down the incoming shards.

    Swish!

Soon she stopped spun around and activated the completed magic circle on her right palm.

    {Ursula Original – Blood Storm}

    Swooooooosh!

A crimson-red tornado approached from behind her colliding with the ice storm. Blood droplets and ice shards flew everywhere.

While this fierce battle was going on…

    “Wooaah~”

At a window of a building several hundred meters away.

A silver-haired girl pressed her palms and face against the window and watched intently.

    “Everyone’s doing well! Fight on~ Fight on~”

    “…”

And the man looking at her expressionlessly Kajann was scratching the scar near his eye out of habit.

“It’s been a while since you returned to Kizen Nefthis.”

    “Mhm!”

Nefthis stepped away from the window and plopped onto the sofa.

“I’ve been very busy lately you see!”

“I heard the provocations from the Holy Federation at the border are worsening.”

“They’re still manageable~ How’s school life for you Kajann? Are you enjoying it?”

Kajann sighed deeply. The fingers scratching his scar lost their strength.

“I want to focus on my mission but even the school assignments are overwhelming.”

    “Wowie!”

“It’s not ‘wowie’. How about creating an environment where I can focus on my mission?”

    Nefthis shook her head.

“No that can’t be! Then the staff will find out who my spy is!”

    “…”

“You know you can’t fail twice right? This time you must advance to the second year. That’s your mission.”

Kajann groaned. Nefthis was just smiling with an innocent expression.

    “Other than that…”

    Fwip.

    Kajann handed her a document.

“If the ruler of the Dark Territory has time to meet a mere agent please take a look at this.”

    “What is iiit?”

“This is what Simon asked me to investigate. He suspects Professor Walter Silage’s substitute.”

Nefthis blinked for a while then began reading the document.

“Walter? I’m sure he was rigorously verified even by cursers skilled in mind reading.”

    “Do you trust their work?”

    “I don’t~ Hehe.”

As she read through the document she tilted her head.

“Hmm? Is this really a document about Simon suspecting Walter? It’s filled with stuff that has no issues. The hematopoietic injection being confirmed safe? There’s no connection found in the handwriting verification?”

“It’s not a document laying out suspicions about Walter. I just brought all the information related to Professor Watler.”

“What do you mean? If you verified it yourselves~”

    Nefthis put down the document.

    “why do you suspect Walter?”

“I was investigating a suspect related to Professor Walter ‘Count Caron’. He disappeared in a storm while crossing the sea.”

    “And?”

“The deeper I dug into his death the more questions I found.”

Purchases not recorded in the family ledger.

Evidence of the family warehouse being rented to outsiders.

Running a monster farm to collect hearts despite not being a necromancer.

Testimonies of unidentified strange figures visiting the mansion.

And a week before being swept away by the storm his wife testified that he was terrified saying he was going to die soon.

“However these are traces not records and testimonies not evidence. There’s a lack of definitive weight. Linking it to Professor Walter also seems a little forced.”

    “I agree!”

Nefthis swung her short legs back and forth.

“So why’d ya bring it up to me knowing all this?”

    “Please grant me investigative authority.”

“Hmmm~ You know you can’t investigate a professor in Kizen with this much evidence right?”

    “Unofficial investigative authority will do.”

    “If it’s that sure.”

Nefthis rested her chin on her hand and nodded.

“If you feel uneasy it’s best to clear it up for good. Go ahead. You’re a kid with a good hunch after all.”

    Kajann bowed respectfully.

    “Thank you.”

    The next day.

Kajann quietly called out one of Walter’s assistants. The newest one.

    “Wh-What is it student?”

The assistant who was called out looked slightly flustered.

Even though he was a Kizen student a first-year bossing an assistant teacher around was extremely arrogant.

“I need your cooperation on something.”

    “…What?”

A vein throbbed at her temple.

‘I’ll make sure to quit this job someday.’

She was sick of dealing with the nonsense of impolite noble bastards.

However having dealt with this often as an assistant teacher she maintained her business-like smile.

“Student if you have questions about the content please come to the department office and go through the proper proced—”

“This isn’t something that requires the proper procedures.”

Kajann rummaged in his blazer and confidently held up a note as if it were a warrant.

It clearly had doodles of flowers trees and clouds seemingly drawn by a young child.

“Hah student… your joke is going too far.”

Said the assistant teacher beginning to tremble as her face turned red.

Kajann silently pointed to the bottom of the doodle.

All faculty members must cooperate with Kajann Edvalt’s investigation! -Nefthis-

It bore Nefthis’ very own signature.

The assistant teacher who was about to scold him for joking saw the signature. She looked and looked again.

    This childish drawing style…

Yet the signature below was in perfect handwriting…

Upon closer inspection the signature bore a sinister and overwhelming weight in its black ink. It was unmistakably hers.

Her face was pale as a sheet and the assistant teacher stuttered

“P-P-P-Please let me help however I can!”

Having gained the assistant teacher’s trust Kajann finally explained his plan.

It was pretty simple; it was hardly worth calling a plan.

“You just have to get Professor Walter’s signature with this quill.”

Kajann opened a black case revealing a quill made from a crow’s feather.

    “…What’s this?”

“It looks like a regular quill but it’s an artifact. It has one effect.”

Kajann’s eyes narrowed with deadly seriousness as he continued

“No matter the circumstances the user only writes their own name.”

To ensure she understood the mission Kajann had her hold the quill and write anything.

She wrote down what she wanted to eat today but the paper bore the name ‘Amiret Mashany’.

    “Wow…! That’s amazing.”

“Now let me explain the plan.”

Nefthis had Kizen HQ bombard Walter with tasks. Walter was now buried in his lab frantically working.

So while he was busy the assistant teacher would go in and get Walter’s signature. Walter would write his own name.

He’d be innocent if Walter still wrote his name ‘Walter Han’ using this quill.

But if another name appeared it would mean Walter had hidden his real name and identity to enter Kizen allowing an official investigation from Kizen HQ.

Anyhow Kajann’s goal was to hand Walter over for an official investigation. Of course if the name ‘Judas’ appeared it would confirm Simon’s suspicions.

“Is Professor Walter particular about his signature?”

“N-No. He scribbles it down without even looking.”

“That’s good. If something goes wrong say this.”

After a moment of thought Kajann gave her a code word.

    “Let’s go with ‘wine’.”

    “U-Understood.”

The assistant teacher headed to Walter’s lab with the documents and quill.

Although she followed along since it was an order from the higher-ups she was curious why they were secretly investigating Walter.

‘If this proves Professor Walter’s innocence it doesn’t matter I guess.’

Kajann the investigator didn’t seem to expect much either. How could a name reveal anything anyway?

Feeling a bit lighter she stood in front of Walter’s lab.

    Cough cough!

She heard coughing from beyond the door. Walter hadn’t been well lately.

“Professor Walter this is the youngest assistant teacher. May I come in?”

    “Ah please come in. Cough!”

When she opened the door and entered she saw Walter buried in a mountain of documents frantically scribbling signatures.

It was just as Kajann had said.

“What is it? I’m a bit busy you see…”

“Oh I’m sorry to bother you! These are last quarter’s accounting documents and we need your signature so…”

She placed the clipboard and quill on his desk and slid them over to Walter.

Walter glanced at the title then signed the last page with the quill without much thought and handed it back.

    “Here you go.”

Autumn-brown hair intelligent glasses and a smile he managed to give despite being swamped with work.

A face she saw often but never grew tired of.

Blushing she took back the clipboard and quill.

    “Thank you Professor!”

As she was about to skip away…

    “Assistant teacher Amiret Mashany.”

She turned around. Walter was giving her a charming smile.

“Thank you for your hard work today.”

    “Ah thank you!”

‘Yippie! He called me by my name!’

She felt extremely happy. Walter gave her one more smile before returning to his paperwork. His normal quill could be heard scratching against paper.

‘What suspicion could there be against such an upright person? Is it because he’s a new professor or something?’

Grumbling to herself she took back the document on the clipboard.

Checking if the professor had signed everything was also a duty of the assistant teacher after all.

As she slowly flipped through the pages a question came to her.

    Flip…

‘When did Professor Walter find out about my full name?’

    Flip…

At the first meeting the assistant teachers only introduced themselves by name as a group. After that day she was just ‘the youngest assistant teacher’.

‘Does he have a good memory?’

    Flip…

Ominous premonitions… They always crept up when least expected.

She didn’t know why but her hand trembled as she turned the pages. Each turn of a page felt like a step toward a cliff. And the edge was drawing close.

    Flip…

Finally she reached the last page.

Since the page was still being flipped she saw only the first few letters.

    ‘Si’

She couldn’t understand what it meant yet.

    ‘Sila’

The next letters appeared as the page flipped further.

    Then finally…

She realized something was wrong. Kajann’s voice echoed in her mind.

“No matter the circumstances the user only writes their own name.”

Finally the page fully turned and Walter’s signature was clear before her eyes.

    It said…

    [Silage Bisabar]

    A nightmare.

Goosebumps ran across her body. Her blood froze and she swallowed down a scream.

    ‘P-P-Professor Walter is… Professor Silage?’

Jittering like a broken doll she slowly turned her head back.

Walter who had been buried in documents and working frantically…

    “…”

He was now staring at her with gruesome eyes.

She felt a fear so violent she couldn’t speak.

    “What’s wrong Assistant Amiret?”

His cold expression quickly turned into a smile.

    She had to get out.

    She had to get out!

“O-Oh! N-N-Nothing Professor! Well then I’ll be going now!”

As she quickly turned her head and tried to leave Walter’s lab…

    Drip.

A drop of blood fell on the documents she was holding.

    Drip. Drip.

The blood spread turning the papers red.

    She was bleeding.

As she dripped blood from her nose she realized that she was also bleeding from her eyes and ears.

    “You’ve always been like that.”

A voice one she had never heard from Walter yet still sounded familiar came out.

“You’re too curious. Have a good rest.”

Her consciousness sank into deep darkness.
