Chapter 377
The first arena where Simon and Chatelle had clashed was in pieces after the ground was lifted up before being dropped back down.
And the third arena where Meilyn and Serene fought had become a sea of flames.
In the end the Kizen administration issued a suspension on the use of both arenas. The managers had to frantically run around coordinating other venues.
Simon Rick and Camibarez descended the stairs to meet Meilyn in the waiting room. There they could see Meilyn approaching with a towel over her head from a distance.
In contrast to the sweltering heat of the arena she was sniffling after using such cold spells.
“Meilyn!!”
Sobbing Camibarez ran and threw herself into Meilyn’s arms. Meilyn said “Ah” and gave an embarrassed smile.
“Cami I’m filthy right now.”
“I w-was so worried about you Meilyn!”
In the end Camibarez burst into tears. Her face was smudged with soot from Meilyn’s clothes but it didn’t bother her.
Meilyn gently smiled as she stroked Cami’s back.
“Whew! That duel was epic for real! This is what you call losing with style!”
Rick exaggeratedly reenacted Meilyn’s final strike with the jet-black ice spell.
Simon who followed behind smiled and asked
“Did you manage to end that fight without regrets?”
“…Simon!”
Seeing Simon and her teammates’ faces Meilyn felt her nose tingle and her vision blurring as she was hit by a wave of relief.
However she felt too embarrassed to cry in front of them so she forced a smile trying hard to hold back her emotions.
“Did you win?”
Simon nodded in response to her question.
“Of course.”
“To beat Chatelle… You’re really something else.”
The two shared a gentle laugh.
At that moment Camibarez peeked up her face buried in Meilyn’s arms.
“Meilyn! You were really amazing at the end!”

“Huh? I-Is that so? I was in such a trance that I barely even knew what was happening…”
“When you were cornering Serene like crazy at the end you looked like a female Simon!”
Meilyn’s face flushed red at those words.
“C-Cami! Is that really a compliment?”
Camibarez rubbed her face against Meilyn and smiled.
“To me it totally is.”
“Y-You…!”
All four of them burst into laughter.
“Wow crap time’s flown! Cami! We need to get ready for our matches as well!”
“Yes Rick!”
The three headed out quickly.
When Simon was about to follow right behind them…
Flutter…
He turned his head. A feather had lightly landed on his shoulder before he realized it.
[Thank you.]
Once he fully turned he saw…
“…Serene.”
“Thank you for helping our Meilyn. She’s an important talent to the Ivory Tower so as the successor to the throne I should be thanking you.”
She held the edges of her skirt and curtsied.
Seeing this Simon furrowed his brows and sighed.
“You’re not going to say some shit like pushing Meilyn to her limit was for her own good are you?”
“Huhuhu. To be honest that was my intention at first~”
A small devilish smile appeared on Serene’s lips.
“But seeing our cute Meilyn clench her teeth and fiercely charge at me something just clicked in me. It felt like I wanted to tease her. So my original plan changed slightly.”
Simon said in a sour voice
“…You really do have a bad personality.”
“Isn’t that part of my charm?”
Seeing Serene say that without a change in expression Simon sighed and shook his head.
Then…
“Hey.”
Tap.
“What are you two doing?”
It was Meilyn. She grabbed Simon’s shoulder and pulled him forcefully behind her. Simon looked back in surprise.
“Oh my~”
Said Serene sounding genuinely surprised.
“How did you know? I was using illusion magic.”
“You think I’m an idiot?”

Meilyn pointed to the ceiling. An illusion-nullifying magic circle was drawn on the wall.
“Hey it’s fun right? Because you honestly think you could control someone like me at any time.”
Serene just kept her mouth shut and gave a faint smile.
“Sure keep underestimating me. At the end of the first year I got you down to 70%. In the second year I’ll force a draw. And by the time we graduate in the third year…”
Jab!
Meilyn boldly pointed her thumb at her own chest.
“I’ll definitely defeat you. And I’ll take the position of successor to the Ivory Tower as well.”
However Serene turned away giving a wink to Simon before space rippled around her and she vanished.
“Phew.”
Meilyn put her hands on her waist and clicked her tongue in frustration. Then she turned to Simon.
“Hey!”
Bewildered Simon stammered
“Wait wait a minute! Meilyn! I didn’t do anything Serene just suddenly…!”
“Thank you.”
Simon stopped.
He expected her to be angry because of Serene but right now Meilyn’s eyes were filled with warm kindness.
“What you said from the audience was a massive help.”
She brushed her disheveled hair aside and said coyly
“If it weren’t for you by now I would’ve—”
“It’s all because of your hard work is it not?”
Having said so Simon started walking forward. In the distance Rick and Camibarez were waiting waving their hands to get Simon and Meilyn attention to hurry up.
“At least for today please enjoy the achievement you’ve made.”
“…”
Watching Simon walk ahead she felt a lump in her throat and took a deep breath.
“W-Wait for me you dummy!”
Kizen HQ officially announced that this Duel Evaluation would be the last for the first-year students this year.
Simon was in the upper squad with an undefeated record.
Meilyn had also been undefeated until she met Serene in the final duel and lost placing her in the middle squad.
Camibarez won her duel and Rick lost his meaning Cami advanced to the upper squad and Rick ended up in the lower squad.
However the specific grades for the Duel Evaluations were mainly based on detailed assessments of the duels themselves. Despite being in the middle squad Meilyn would receive higher grades than many upper-squad students.
Of course the final squad placement was also important.
Even if they were once in the upper squad the bottom 100 of the current ‘lowest squad’ were immediately expelled from Kizen. This was the number of expulsions after it became reduced in the second semester with the BDMATs giving more than enough expulsions already.
Thus out of the initial 1000 first-year students at Kizen only 647 remained.
Soon the number of survivors would rapidly decrease due to failures in various performance assessments final exams mission evaluations and especially the advancement exam.
As this truth settled in the crucial ‘final performance assessments’ for each subject began.
First was Professor Hong Feng’s Combat Dark Magic. The ‘duel against assistant teachers’.
“Gahahahaha!”
The assistant teacher Simon would face was none other than ‘Brett’ who he had a bad history with.
“What’s wrong Simon Polentia!! Try messing with me like you did before!”
In the training field Brett’s fists were relentlessly cornering Simon. Simon was only focusing on defense.
The main rule in this performance assessment was to use only Combat Dark Magic.
Using magic circles would mean instant disqualification.
And if a student landed ‘three effective hits’ on the assistant teacher before their barrier gauge was depleted they would receive an A+ grade.
“What are you doing! I said ‘Come at me!’ ”
Brett was throwing punches filled with malice.
He had held back against other students but not with Simon. Stuck guarding Simon’s barrier gauge had already dropped by nearly half.
Yet…
“You bastard!!”
Simon was calm. Even while crouching with his arms raised in front of him his eyes were keenly searching for opportunities which further aggravated Brett.
‘In the end his options for attacking are just Drum Beating Roaring River and Bayonet! I will never get hit by any of them!’
Brett stopped his barrage of attacks and drew his right fist back. As the jet-black around his fist swirled violently Rick shouted in fright
“Simon! It’s Roaring River!”
“Dodge it!”
Roaring River an attack that pierced through defenses.
The moment Brett smirked and threw his right fist at Simon who was still guarding…
Shiik.
Simon lowered his guard and moved forward taking Brett’s Roaring River straight to the chest.
“What?!”
Even knowing it was a purely piercing attack it took a strong will to just let someone’s fist connect.
Having used the opening to get close to Brett he brought his right hand against Brett’s side.
Then he pushed hard.
{Simon Original – Candle Blowing}
Poooooooooooow!
Brett was pushed back. The first light indicating a successful hit came on.
Thud!
“Kugh!”
Brett flew to the edge of the field and landed on his butt.
‘What…?! What kind of skill did he just—?!’
As soon as he lifted his head he saw Simon standing with his index and middle fingers together like he was about to flick something.
{Simon Original – Scratching Wind}
Simon flicked his fingers and with a dull ring a shockwave burst out and struck Brett’s forehead.
Another light came on and the watching students cheered.
“What? What’s going on?”
“Nice one! Keep cornering him!”
Brett came to his senses.
He had only considered the three main combat dark magic skills but now original techniques were coming out of nowhere.
‘Dammit! Creating a new combat dark magic skill is much harder than creating original magic circles!’
Brett quickly got to his feet.
‘I can’t give him more time!’
He couldn’t allow three hits no matter what. This was a matter of pride as an assistant teacher.
Brett stepped on jet-black and charged at Simon.
At that moment Simon took a deep breath his arms moving gracefully into position.
It was a preparatory stance for something.
Jet-black was swirling unusually around his fist. Though this foe was just a student Brett’s eyes filled with a wave of anxiety.
‘Dammit! What is that?’
A close-range attack?
A long-range strike?
A counter move?
Another shockwave?
He had no clue.
Flustered Brett abruptly stopped to observe Simon’s movements when…
Thump!!
Simon suddenly struck the ground with his fist. The ground shook and rumbled before dirt erupted from under Brett’s feet.
‘A first-year using a wavelength technique…!’
Dirt and gravel slightly scratched Brett but this alone wasn’t enough to turn on the third light.
Of course Simon knew that.
Swish.
What Simon was truly aiming for was with his left hand.
The follow-up attack came immediately after striking the ground with his right fist. Flowing from one move to the next like water jet-black in the shape of a pointed blade formed in Simon’s swinging left hand.
{Hong Feng Original – Bayonet}
Slaaaaaaash!
A long-range attack Bayonet after obscuring Brett’s vision with rising dirt.
Brett hurriedly ducked to try to dodge but…
Shk!
The blade grazed his side and arm. Finally the third light came on.
“Match over!”
Hong Feng clapped her hands and shouted
“Simon Polentia having landed three hits on the assistant teacher is confirmed to receive an A+!”
Simon raised his fist and cheered. Rick Meilyn and Camibarez shouted on in excitement and the other students clapped and cheered for the first A+.
“…Huh?”
Brett stood back up his mouth hanging wide open as he was left dumbfounded.
